Ronald Pickeral
DANVILLE, Va. - Ronald Lee Pickeral, 56, of 235 Major Court, died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center of two months of declining health.
Born March 12, 1943, in Danville, he was the son of the late Rodney R. Pickeral and Juanita Barber Pickeral, who survives.
He was married
to Carol Lewis Pickeral who survives.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he worked for 32 years at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. While playing football at George Washington High School he made the all western district in defense and offense.
He was a graduate of Hargrave Military Academy where he also played football. He was a member of St. Lukes United Methodist Church.
In addition to his mother of Danville, and his wife of the residence, survivors include one son Timothy Lee Pickeral of Danville; one brother Sherrill Ray Pickeral of Danville.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ronald Mateer and the Rev. Ronald Graham officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Jeraldine Smith
DANVILLE, Va. - Jeraldine Thompson Smith, 62, of 705 Washington St., died Monday, April 12, 1999, at her residence.
Born April 12, 1937, she was the daughter of Albert L. Thompson and Sally B. Thompson.
She is survived by her mother, Sally B. Thompson, a stepmother, Annie M. Thompson of Danville; three sisters, Shelia C. Thompson and Nadine Thompson, both of Danville and Shirley A. Williams of Irvington, N.J., and one brother, Wilbur Cobbs of Danville.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her stepmother, Annie M. Thompson, 764 Lee St., Danville.
Leroy Weringo
DANVILLE, Va. - Leroy Wilson Weringo, 86, of 520 Church Ave., died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at the Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Feb. 19, 1913, in Lynchburg, he was the son of Hiram Weringo and Mary Lena Stultz Weringo.
On April 8, 1949, he married
Margaret Bell Marshall Weringo, who survives him.
He moved to Danville from Lynchburg in 1950. He had retired from Dodson Brothers Pest Control Service as manager with over 20 years of service at his retirement. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
In addition to the wife of the residence, he is survived by three sons, Robert Leroy Weringo of Lynchburg, Richard Wayne Weringo of Hope Mills, S.C., and James Randolph Weringo of Danville; two daughters, Marjorie W. Megginson of Keeling and Mary Elizabeth W. Thomas of Shelbyville, Ky; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from the graveside in Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jack Heinsohn officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and other times at the residence.
Joseph Ferrell
DANVILLE, Va. - Joseph Wellon Ferrell, 91, of 175 Powell Ave., died 11:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at his residence.
Born Dec. 4, 1907, in Halifax County, Va., he was the son of John Herbert Ferrell and Cora Lee Collie Ferrell.
He was married
Oct. 5, 1935, to Mary Parcell Ferrell, who survives.
He was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church and AARP Senior Citizens Club. He lived most of his life in Danville and retired in 1972 from the Danville School System. He served in the United States Army from 1929 until 1935 and for a brief time during World War II.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Oscar Ferrell, Henry Ferrell and Baxter Ferrell; four sisters, Mary Ferrell, Charlotte Shaw, Lucille Yeatts and Grovine Dyer; two half-brothers, Tim Ferrell and Auther Ferrell; and three half-sisters, Rosa Collie, Elizabeth Collie and Lena Lewis.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Jerry Wayne Ferrell of Goochland; a daughter-in-law, Fay Cardinal Ferrell of Goochland; and a granddaughter Wendy Carol Ferrell of Danville.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home with the Rev. Freddy Vicks and the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Barker Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence.
C. Calvin Porter
DANVILLE, Va. - C. Calvin Porter, 70, of 1124 Paxton St. died Sunday, April 11, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
He was born April 29, 1928, in Danville, a son of the late Calvin Porter Sr. and Adda Stroud Porter.
He was married
to Essie Graves Porter, who preceded him in death May 22, 1997.
He was retired from Stratford College, where he worked as a chef for many years.
Survivors include a daughter, Carol Porter, of the residence; three sons, Carl Porter and Clifton Porter, both of the residence, and Curtis Porter of Danville; three sisters, Marion Davis and Deborah Gray, both of Danville, and Anne Massenberg of Detroit.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, April at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Serenus Churn officiating.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
Louise Ragsdale
MECHANICSVILLE, Va. - Louise McLaughlin Ragsdale, 86, died Wednesday, April 14, 1999.
She was the daughter of Willie Edgar McLaughlin and Edna Earl Bernard McLaughlin.
She was married
to Henry Wilson Ragsdale, who predeceased her.
Survivors include one daughter, Judith R. Lamberth of Mechanicsville; two sons, Kenneth L. Ragsdale and Jerry W. Ragsdale, both of Mechanicsville; two brothers, Robert H. McLaughlin of Mechanicsville and Vernon McLaughlin of Aylett; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The remains rest at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Bennett Funeral Home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn cemetery.
The family will receive friends 6-9 pm. today at the funeral home.
William Rowland
HALIFAX, Va. - William "Bill" Edward Rowland, 75, of 230 Mountain Road, died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Nov. 22, 1923, in New York City, he was the son of James Edward Rowland and Emily Palme Rowland.
He was married
to Barbara Gibbon Rowland, who survives.
He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. He was a member of the South Boston Rotary Club and was past fire marshall of Halifax County. He was past chief of Halifax Fire Department, was one of the founders of the Virginia State Fire School and was very active with the Boy Scouts in Halifax County.
In addition to his wife of Halifax, survivors include one daughter, Bonnie Rowland Crowder of Colonial Heights; four sons, Charles Edward Rowland of Halifax, James Earle Rowland of Myrtle Beach, S.C., William Ward Rowland of Danville, and Thomas Vaughan Rowland of Halifax; one sister, Grace Rowland Dugdale of Bridgewater, N.J.; and five grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Powell Funeral Home.
A private burial will be held at a later date.
Henry Womack
BLAIRS, Va. - Henry Womack, 84, of 2197 Malmaison Road, died Tuesday, April 13, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 14, 1914, in Halifax County, he was the son of Arthur Womack and Hester Womack.
He was married
to Charlotte Womack, who survives.
He was retired from Stone Superior Rock Quarry and was pastor of the Church of God in Blairs.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Linda Channey, Brenda Channey and Debra Channey, all of Burlington, N.C.; one son, George Womack of Blairs; and one sister, Margaret Adams of Long Branch, N.J.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Church of God, Blairs, with the Bishop Edward Payne officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Evelyn Bollinger
DANVILLE, Va. - Evelyn (Ebbie) Heffinger Bollinger, 86, formerly of Noble Avenue, died Friday, April 16, 1999, after three weeks in Piney Forest Health Care Center and several years of declining health.
Born April 14, 1913, in Danville, she was the daughter of Singleton Martin Heffinger and Hattie Atkins Heffinger.
She was married
to Sanford "Cut" Bollinger, who predeceased her Jan. 30, 1988.
She lived all of her life in Danville. She retired from Beltons Beauty Salon where she worked as a beautician. She also served as the hair dresser for Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home prior to and for several years after her retirement. She was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Robertson Bennett Chapter No. 70, Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include one sister, Louise H. Ryan of Ringgold; and one brother, Oakley Linwood Heffinger of Forrest.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Tim Nuckles officiating. The Robertson Bennett Chapter No. 70, Order of the Eastern Star will conduct funeral rites.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence of her nephew, Paul L. Heffinger, 1201 Rosemary Lane, Danville.
James M. Bowling
GRETNA, Va. - James Mathew Bowling, 83, of 1573 Crown Road, died Friday, April 16, 1999, at his residence.
Born September 13, 1915, in Bedford County, he was a son of the late James Robert Bowling and Fairy Saunders Bowling.
He was predeceased by a son Robert C. Bowling.
Mr. Bowling was a member and former deacon of Greenfield Baptist Church. He was a farmer and a retired correctional officer for the state of Virginia.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years Marie Dellis Bowling of the residence; one son and daughter-in-law, Melvin W. and Virginia Bowling of Gretna; one daughter, Brenda Baxter of Charlotte, N.C.; three brothers, Osmond Bowling of Bedford, Buford Bowling of Amherst and Walter Bowling of Roanoke; six sisters, Mary Spradlin of Vinton, Joyce Cooper of Salem, Lena Boerner, Laura Sink, Virginia Anderson and Dester Poage, all of Roanoke; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Greenfield Baptist Church, Building Fund, P.O. Box 875, Gretna, Va., 24557 or the Gretna Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 14, Gretna, Va. 24557.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, April 18, 1999, at the Greenfield Baptist Church by Rev. R.G. Rowland. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
