Joan Cobb
ARLINGTON, Va. - Joan Tyler Cobb, 47, died unexpectedly Sunday, April 4, 1999.
Born April 3, 1952, in Traverse City, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Earl C. Tyler and Evelyn Wright Tyler, who survives.
She was married
to Rev. Richard E. Cobb, who survives.
She was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Arlington.
In addition to her mother of Traverse City, and her husband of the residence, survivors include three sons, Richard B. Cobb of Arlington, Christian M. Cobb of Callands, and the Rev. Martin T. Cobb of Bowerston, Ohio; two daughters, Tracy C. Miller of Sterling, and Amy E. Short of Norfolk; one brother, Douglas Tyler of Kalamazoo, Mich.; one sister Elaine T. Renollet of Wilmington, N.C.; and one grandchild.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Main Street United Methodist Church, Danville, with the Rev. Jack Davis officiating.

Joseph Ferrell
DANVILLE, Va. - Joseph Wellon Ferrell, 91, of 175 Powell Ave., died 11:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at his residence.
Born Dec. 4, 1907, in Halifax County, Va., he was the son of John Herbert Ferrell and Cora Lee Collie Ferrell.
He was married
Oct. 5, 1935, to Mary Parcell Ferrell, who survives.
He was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church and AARP Senior Citizens Club. He lived most of his life in Danville and retired in 1972 from the Danville School System. He served in the United States Army from 1929 until 1935 and for a brief time during World War II.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Oscar Ferrell, Henry Ferrell, Baxter Ferrell and Thornton Ferrell; four sisters, Mary Ferrell, Charlotte Shaw, Lucille Yeatts and Grovine Dyer; two half-brothers, Tim Ferrell and Auther Ferrell; and three half-sisters, Rosa Collie, Elizabeth Collie and Lena Lewis.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Jerry Wayne Ferrell of Goochland; a daughter-in-law, Fay Cardinal Ferrell of Goochland; and a granddaughter Wendy Carol Ferrell of Danville.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Barker Funeral Home with the Rev. Freddy Vicks and the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Frederick Holley
DANVILLE, Va. - Frederick D. Holley went home to join his Lord and Savior after an eight-year decline in health.
He was born on July 5, 1917. He married
Doris Haynes Holley on November 16, 1943. Their family members include Barbara H. Behrman, her daughter Sarah, Nancy and Michael Bliss and their children Matthew, John Michael, Melanie and Thomas Ford. His family will continue to live and praise the Lord for the life of their husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
His family heritage included his parents, Cora L. Grant and J. Cabell Holley; two sisters, Mae Holley, and Leslie McCroskey. Living in the Dry Fork area are his sisters, Thelma Stowe and Annie Stowe, as well as his brothers, Charlie Holley and Luther Holley.
Fred enjoyed being an active member of the Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during World War II.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 17, 1999, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and also in the home. His family will honor him with a service to be held on Sunday, April 18, 1999 at 3:00 in the afternoon at the Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church.
Services will be rendered by the Rev. Freddy Vicks and the Rev. Daryl Joyce. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post No. 325.
Ollie Scearce
DANVILLE, Va. - Ollie Cordle Scearce, 91, of 3020 Riverside Drive, died Friday morning, April 16, 1999, at her residence after two years of declining health.
Born May 13, 1907, in Tazwell County, she was the daughter of James C. Cordle and Louella Brown Cordle.
She was married
to Joseph Franklin Scearce, who predeceased her June 28, 1973.
She spent most of her life in Danville where she was a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith and attended Faith Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Richard Franklin Scearce of Roanoke; and one daughter, Pat Hancock of Danville; one brother, James Cordle of Pounding Mill; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by five brothers and five sisters.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Bennie Poovey officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Mary Turner
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary L. Turner, 64, of 8761 Martinsville Highway, died Thursday, April 15, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 27, 1934, in Beckley, West Va., she was the daughter of the late George Washington Bolen and Lucindy Smith Bolen, who survives.
She was married
on Dec. 23, 1975, to John Bryant Turner, who survives.
She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her mother of Mabscott, W. Va., and her husband of the residence, survivors include five daughters, Brenda L. Dix, Rhonda S. Scott and Diane Burke, all of Danville, Kay Farrar of Roopville, Ga., and Barbie Toler of Reidsville, N.C.; one son, James Armstrong Jr. of Hinesville, Ga.; five brothers, Robert Bolen, Floyd Bolen and Clifford Bolen and Burt Bolen, all of Mabscott, W. Va. and James Bolen of York, Pa.; and 12 grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one grandchild.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Claude Bailey officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Barker Funeral Home.
Evelyn Bollinger
DANVILLE, Va. - Evelyn (Ebbie) Heffinger Bollinger, 86, formerly of Noble Avenue, died Friday, April 16, 1999, after three weeks in Piney Forest Health Care Center and several years of declining health.
Born April 14, 1913, in Danville, she was the daughter of Singleton Martin Heffinger and Hattie Atkins Heffinger.
She was married
to Sanford "Cut" Bollinger, who predeceased her Jan. 30, 1988.
She lived all of her life in Danville. She retired from Beltons Beauty Salon where she worked as a beautician. She also served as the hair dresser for Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home prior to and for several years after her retirement. She was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Robertson Bennett Chapter No. 70, Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include one sister, Louise H. Ryan of Ringgold; and one brother, Oakley Linwood Heffinger of Forrest.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Tim Nuckles officiating. The Robertson Bennett Chapter No. 70, Order of the Eastern Star will conduct funeral rites.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her nephew, Paul L. Heffinger, 1201 Rosemary Lane, Danville.

Irene Johnston
DANVILLE, Va. - Irene Earles Johnston, 55, of 119 Tolliver Place died at 12:20 p.m. Saturday, April 17, 1999, at her residence.
Born June 2, 1943, in Danville, she was the daughter of Edward Owen Earles and Ola McDaniel Earles Broome.
She lived all of her life in Danville and was of the Baptist faith. She was manager of Western Sizzlin Restaurant in Danville. She owned and operated a cleaning service called The Cleaning Lady.
She is survived by one daughter, Terri Jo Harris Bray and her husband Johnny Ray Bray of Danville; one son, William B. Harris Jr. and his wife Colleen S. Harris of Virginia Beach; two granddaughters, Nora K. Harris of Lancaster, Penn., and Joelle Bray of Danville; special friend Jim Goodson of Danville; friend Judy Saunders of Danville; friend Chuck Derrick of Danville; three aunts, Arlene Harris and Louise Wilson, both of Danville and Loveta Freeman of Martinsville and one uncle, Jeff Harris of Danville.
She was predeceased by her husband Robert M. "Bob" Johnston.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday from graveside at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Fletcher Hardy and Dr. Leroy Clack officiating.
The family will recieve friends at the residence, 119 Tolliver Place.

Christine Philpott
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Christine Prillaman Philpott, 90, of the Philpott community, died Saturday, April 17, 1999, at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born July 2, 1908, she was the daughter of the late Crockett Lee Prillaman and the late Sallie Bett Davis Prillaman.
In September 1924, she married
Charles Thomas Philpott, who died on Nov. 17, 1961.
She was a member of the Town Creek Primitive Baptist Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Peggy Lee Philpott Cross of Martinsville and twin daughters Betty Jo Philpott Martin of Martinsville and Mary Adlynn Philpott Wilson of Crystal River, Fla.; one son, Charles T. Philpott Jr. of Philpott; one brother, Cecil Prillaman of Pulaski; one sister, Ocie Hoffman of Norfolk; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Town Creek Primitive Baptist Church with the elder Larry Hollandsworth officiating. Burial will follow in the family cemetery at Philpott.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Collins Funeral Services.
