Justin Simmons
DANVILLE, Va. - Justin Alan Simmons, 18, of 553 Arlington Road, died Sunday, May 23, 1999 from an accidental gunshot wound.
Born June 24, 1980 in Danville, he was a son of Donald Ray Simmons and Diane Sarver Wilkins of Danville. He was a stepson of Michele Simmons and Dale Wilkins of Danville.
Simmons spent all of his life in Danville. He was of the Baptist faith and was a carpenter for Mike Henderson Construction.
In addition to his parents and stepparents, survivors include three brothers: James Richard Simmons II of Danville, and James Hunter Simmons and Carlton Scott Simmons, both of the residence; one sister, Christie Leigh Jeffries of Danville; his paternal grandmother, Ferbynel Eddins of Boston, Mass.; his steppaternal grandmother, Lutie C. Simmons of Waynesboro; his paternal stepgrandparents, Mr. and Mrs. B.G. Hammock of Danville; and his maternal stepgrandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Wilkins of Stem, N.C.
He was predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Birgie Goins Sarver.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Ray Wiggs. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and at the residence at other times.
Kay Burnett
BLAIRS, Va. - Kay Austin Burnett, age 64, of 232 Railroad Lane, died Saturday, April 24, 1999 after several years of declining health.
Born June 28, 1934 in Rockingham County, N.C., she was the daughter of Theodore Calvin Austin and Pauline Setliff Austin.
On April 26, 1969 she was married
to Lewis Dale Burnett, who predeceased her on March 23, 1985.
She was of the Methodist faith and a member of the Blairs Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She had been a resident of Blairs for the last 30 years. She retired due to her health in 1995 from Southland Oil Company, where she worked as a secretary. She and her husband also owned and operated Burnett's Restaurant in Blairs prior to his death.
Survivors include two daughters, Robyn Burnett Catlett of Prospect Hill, N.C., and Jeanna Burnett Pleasant of Blairs; one brother, Curtis King Austin of Ruffin, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Tom Denny officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence.
Roland Hankins
AXTON, Va. - Roland Daniel Conrad Hankins, age 85, of 2961 Lawrence Drive, died Friday, Apr. 23, 1999 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born July 20, 1913 in Henry County, he was the son of William D. Hankins and Bessie Rice Hankins.
He was married
to Annie Mae Odell Hankins, who survives, for 64 years.
He was a graduate of the Graystone School in the Axton Community and was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church.
He was also a farmer and had retired from Dan River Mills after 40 years of service.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Jean Constance Tunnell of Stuart, Joy Carol McClelland of Massachusetts, and Judy Cherryl Hall of Axton; four sons, Joseph Conrad Hankins, Jerry Colbert Hankins, and Jethro Clayton Hankins, all of Martinsville, and James Coy Hankins of Atlanta, Ga; three brothers, Carroll Hankins and Jasper Hankins, both of Axton, and Clayborn Hankins of Danville; 26 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
He was also predeceased by two grandchildren, one sister, and three brothers.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Monday at Mount Vernon Baptist Church with the Rev. Dale Darley officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. today at McKee-Stone Funeral Services, Martinsville, and 4-9:00 p.m. at the residence.
Fred Robertson
DANVILLE, Va. - Frederick Morris Robertson, 48, of 231 Taylor St., died Friday, April 23, 1999 at his home.
Born Nov. 3, 1951 in Martinsville, he was the son of Fred E. Robertson and Mildred Smith Robertson, both of whom survive.
He was married
to Sharon Whitt Robertson, who survives.
He attended Emmanuel Wesleyan Church, and had lived in Danville since 1970. He was a 1972 graduate of Danville Community College and was maintenance supervisor with the Danville Public Schools, where he had worked since 1972.
Starting as assistant supervisor of plant operations and maintenance, he was promoted in July 1987 to supervisor. Throughout his career he distinguished himself through his technical and leadership skills and through the large number of projects that have significantly improved the school district for Danville's students and citizens.
He led a staff of 125 people and was responsible for the planning of future facilities, new construction projects, and the ongoing maintenance and facilities operations of the school district. He received recognition from the school board for his leadership contributions to the Schoolfield Elementary project, the Westwood Middle School project, expansion projects at I.W. Taylor and E.A. Gibson schools, for Focus School renovations at the J.M Langston Focus Center, and for his planning and design efforts for the new Magnet School projects in Danville.
He was recognized as a key member of the school district leadership team, and a major contributor to improvement of the Danville Public School system.
In addition to his parents of Collinsville, and his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Sharon Rebecca Robertson, of the residence; one son, Frederick Thomas Robertson, of the residence; and two brothers, Mark L. Robertson of Roanoke and Donald L. Robertson of Stoneville, N.C.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Kendall Jenkins and the Rev. Randy Watts officiating. Interment
will be held in the Roselawn Burial Park in Martinsville.

Elsie Sellers
RINGGOLD, Va. - Elsie Henderson Moorefield Evans Sellers, 78, of 4838 South Boston Highway, died Friday, April 23, 1999, at her residence.
Born Nov. 18, 1920, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Willie Moorefield and Mary Henderson Moorefield.
She was married
in April 1948, to Louis F. Sellers, who survives.
She was associated with Johnson Drug Store for many years, retiring in 1970. She was of the Presbyterian faith. She had resided in the Ringgold Community most of her life.
In addition to her husband of Ringgold, survivors include one daughter, Odestine "Tina" Evans Brown of Chatham, two sons, William Homer Evans of Halifax, and James L. Sellers of Blacksburg; two sisters, Louise Moorefield of Halifax, and Gertrude M. Parker of Newport News; seven grandchildren, Robin Brown Dillard, Jesse Ray Brown, Karen Leigh Brown Conner, Teresa Evans Samples, Angelia Evans Evans, Christopher Keeling Sellers, and Cameron Moorefield Sellers; and six great-grandchildren, Mark Patrick Alger, David Oscar Harrison, Williams Clayton Samples, Jennifer Lee Samples, Jessica Faye Samples and Mary Victoria Evans.
A funeral will be held at 4 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Carl L. Burger officiaiting. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Sarah Smith
DANVILLE, Va. - Sarah Womack Francis Smith, 86, of 25 Old Halifax Road, died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after declining in health for the past month.
Born Sept. 23, 1912, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Robert Womack and Mattie Francis Womack.
She was married
to Eugene D. Francis who predeceased her in 1963, and later to Zonta Smith, who also predeceased her in 1982.
She lived her life in the Brookneal area and for the past 25 years had resided in the Danville area. She was a retired homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy Perkinson of Volens, Shirley Foust of Danville and Christine Walker of Lynch Station; three brothers, John Robert Womack and John Henry Womack, both of Danville, and Richard L. Womack of Petersburg, Fla.; one sister, Rebecca E. Troxler of Danville; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sons, Sam Brown Francis and Thomas Allen Francis; and one great-granddaughter.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. M.D. Adkins and the Rev. Wiliam Bayes officiating. Burial with a graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. at Fork Baptist Church cemetery, Scottsburg.

Howard Terry
DANVILLE, Va. - Howard Terry, 88, of 210 Winslow St., died Tuesday, April 20, 1999 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 30, 1910 in Halifax County, he was the son of Claude Terry and Lucy Woodson Terry.
He was married
to Fannie O. Terry, who predeceased him.
He worked as a laborer for Lorillard Tobacco Co.
He is survived by four sons, Howard Kenneth Terry and Raymond Lee Terry, both of Danville, and Claude Felix Terry and Clyde Wilbert Terry, both of Philadelphia, Pa; one sister, Janie Goode of Sutherlin; two brothers, Norman Terry and Willard Terry, both of Danville; 26 grandchildren, and 35 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Cunningham & Hughes Memorial Chapel with Dr. James Cabell officiating. Interment
will follow in the Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends for a viewing 4-8:00 p.m. today at the Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.
Ruth Johnston
DANVILLE, Va. - Ruth Craddock Johnston, 99, died Friday morning, April 23, 1999, in Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born April 20, 1900, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of George L. Craddock and Janet Coleman Craddock.
She was married
to Edward W. Johnston, who predeceased her.
She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy Whelchel of Albany, Ga.; one sister, Roberta Franck of Richmond; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one daughter, Janet Johnston.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Townes Memorial Chapel with Dr. Joey Faucette officiating. Burial will be 3 p.m. in Evergreen cemetery, Roanoke.

Virginia Newton
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Virginia Louise Allen Newton, 42, of 104 Love Shop Mobile Home Park, Lot 30, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at Duke Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
Born Dec. 9, 1956, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of John Acree Allen Sr. and Laura Virginia Fifer Allen.
She was married
to Bobby Ray Newton, who survives. She was a homemaker.
In addition to her husband of South Boston, survivors include one daughter, Sherry Lloyd of Halifax; two brothers, John A. Allen Jr. and David Bruce Allen, both of Halifax; and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethel Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Tony Brooks officiating.
