Fred Robertson
DANVILLE, Va. - Frederick Morris Robertson, 48, of 231 Taylor St., died Friday, April 23, 1999 at his home.
Born Nov. 3, 1951 in Martinsville, he was the son of Fred E. Robertson and Mildred Smith Robertson, both of whom survive.
He was married
to Sharon Whitt Robertson, who survives.
He attended Emmanuel Wesleyan Church, and had lived in Danville since 1970. He was a 1972 graduate of Danville Community College and was maintenance supervisor with the Danville Public Schools, where he had worked since 1972.
Starting as assistant supervisor of plant operations and maintenance, he was promoted in July 1987 to supervisor. Throughout his career he distinguished himself through his technical and leadership skills and through the large number of projects that have significantly improved the school district for Danville's students and citizens.
He led a staff of 125 people and was responsible for the planning of future facilities, new construction projects, and the ongoing maintenance and facilities operations of the school district. He received recognition from the school board for his leadership contributions to the Schoolfield Elementary project, the Westwood Middle School project, expansion projects at I.W. Taylor and E.A. Gibson schools, for Focus School renovations at the J.M Langston Focus Center, and for his planning and design efforts for the new Magnet School projects in Danville.
He was recognized as a key member of the school district leadership team, and a major contributor to improvement of the Danville Public School system.
In addition to his parents of Collinsville, and his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Sharon Rebecca Robertson, of the residence; one son, Frederick Thomas Robertson, of the residence; and two brothers, Mark L. Robertson of Roanoke and Donald L. Robertson of Stoneville, N.C.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Kendall Jenkins and the Rev. Randy Watts officiating. Interment
will be held in the Roselawn Burial Park in Martinsville.
The family will receive friends 7-9:00 p.m. today at the funeral home, and at other times at 713 North Main St.
James Robert Shelton
SUTHERLIN, Va. - James Robert Shelton Sr. of 7823 South Boston Highway died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at his residence.
Born April 5, 1920, in Sutherlin, he was the son of Gay and Deckie Edward Shelton.
He was married
to Georgia Belle Cash Shelton, who survives.
Mr. Shelton was a local farmer for many years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Tec-Sargent in the United States Army, 103rd infantry division, for six and a half years. Mr. Shelton landed in France Aug. 15, 1944, in operation "Dragon."
He was an active member of Lakewood Evangelical Methodist Church, where he was a former deacon, member of the Board of Trustees, choir member, past president of fellowship class and teacher of the Junior Boys Class.
Mr. Shelton was a former member of the Ringgold Volunteer Fire Department, a former member of the Sutherlin Ruritan Club and a life member of Chapter 19, D.A.V.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include five daughters, Marie Oakes, Martha Gosney, Nancy Eanes, Mary Sue Burdette, and Judy Harris, all of Sutherlin; one son, James "Jimmy" Shelton Jr. of Sutherlin; one brother, Charles Shelton of Seattle, Wash.; five grandchildren, Tanya Wells, Rachel Shelton, Lee Burdette Jr., Crystal Eanes and Robert Burdette; and one great-grandson, Hunter Lee.
Mr. Shelton was predeceased by two sisters, Maude Louise St. Clair and Esther Wilkerson.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Burks and the Rev. David Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the Shelton-Banks Family cemetery, Sutherlin.

Vivian Taczanowsky
CHATHAM, Va. - Vivian Varacolla Taczanowsky, 70, of 3975 Spring Garden Road, died Wednesday night, April 21, 1999, at Sunrise Nursing Home of the Triad, High Point, N.C.
Born June 13, 1928, in Butler, Pa., she was the daughter of Joseph Varacolla and Edith Hesidence Varacolla.
She had spent most of her life in Butler, where she was a homemaker, before moving to the Danville area in 1993.
She was of the Roman Catholic faith and a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Post No. 249, Butler, Pa.
Survivors include one daughter, Maria Smith of Spring Garden; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Robert J. Barber Jr. officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Blanche Webb
RINGGOLD, Va. - Blanche Davis Webb, 86, of 5996 Kentuck Road, died Saturday, April 24, 1999 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after a period of declining health over the past six months.
Born June 28, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Laffate Davis and Mary Sue Womack Davis.
On Dec. 26, 1929 she was married
to Earl Shelton Webb, who predeceased her Sept. 5, 1994.
She was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church, a member of the Fidelis Sunday school class, and a member of the Day Circle. She lived most of her life in Pittsylvania County where she was a homemaker and a farmer.
She is survived by two daughters, Hazel W. Kendrick of Ringgold and Laura W. Tate of Danville; seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
She was also predeceased by two sons, Linwood H. Webb and Shelton Lee Webb.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today in the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. David Henry officiating. Interment
will take place in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Arthur "Jerry" Glass
NATHALIE, Va. - Arthur Woodworth "Jerry" Glass, 82, of 2105 Rabat Road, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at his residence.
Born Oct. 14, 1916, in Halifax County, he was the son of William Glass and Fannie Sue Francis Glass.
He was married
to Pauline C. Glass, who survives.
He was a member of Catawba Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four sons, Rev. Joseph Glass of Gretna, Robert Glass of Nathalie, Earl Glass of Danville, and Timothy Glass of Natural Bridge; one daughter, Donna Krausz of Columbia, S.C.; and 10 grandchildren.
A funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Catawba Baptist Church with the Rev. Joseph Glass, the Rev. Ed Griffin and the Rev. David Dickerson officiating. Burial will be in Cage Family cemetery.

Ruth Johnston
DANVILLE, Va. - Ruth Craddock Johnston, 99, died Friday morning, April 23, 1999, in Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born April 20, 1900, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of George L. Craddock and Janet Coleman Craddock.
She was married
to Edward W. Johnston, who predeceased her.
She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy Whelchel of Albany, Ga.; one sister, Roberta Franck of Richmond; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one daughter, Janet Johnston.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Townes Memorial Chapel with Dr. Joey Faucette officiating. Burial will be 3 p.m. in Evergreen cemetery, Roanoke.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
James Meeler Sr.
ALTON, Va. - James Wallace Meeler Sr., 86, of 15014 Philpott Road, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at his residence.
Born Oct. 6, 1912, in Halifax County, he was the son of William Jackson Meeler and Cora McSherry Meeler.
He was married
to Jewel Coates Meeler, who survives.
He was a retired farmer and cabinet maker for Burton Lumber Company. He was a member of Olive Branch United Methodist Church where he was a former trustee. He was a former president of the Community Improvement Club in Calvary and the Meeler family was selected 1960 Farm Family of the Year in Halifax County.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters Jean Wilborne of Taylors, S.C., Nancy Meeler of South Boston, and Jane Hall of Alton; two sons Larry Meeler of Danville, Va. and Eldridge Meeler of Roxboro, N.C.; one daughter, Deborah White of Dry Fork, Va.; two sisters Lottie M. Pascucci of Danville, Va. and Lorene M. Hancock of Durham, N.C.; and 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son James Wallace Meeler Jr. and one grandson Gregory Scott Owens.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Olive Branch United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael Teixeira officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery, Alton.

Jesse Rogers
DANVILLE, Va. - Jesse Owen Rogers, 83, of 141 Smith St., died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at his residence.
Born Feb. 3, 1916, in Durham County, N.C., he was the son of Jimmy Rogers and Rebecca Steptoe Rogers.
He was a member of the United States Army during World War II. He attended school in Durham County and was employed with Blackwell Motors for many years. He was a member of Rogers Grove Baptist Church in Durham.
Survivors include two daughters Ella Rogers-Murray of Warrington, Pa., and Sherone Rogers-McKay of Orlando, Fla.; one sister Louise Hunt-Wilson of Danville; one brother Roscoe Rogers of New York; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rogers Grove Baptist Church cemetery, in Durham, N.C.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Mary Campion
SALEM, Va. - Mary Lester Shapard Campion, 77, of 2001 Stone Mill Drive, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at Lewis Gale Medical Center.
Born Dec. 31, 1921, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Henry Herber Shapard and Mary Lester Shapard.
She was married
to Thomas W. Campion Sr., who survives.
She was a member of The New Hope Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her husband of Salem, survivors include one daughter Marianne Golightly of Halifax; one son Thomas W. Campion Jr. of Royal Oak, Mich.; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Halifax cemetery with the Rev. Keith A. Johnston and the Rev. Les Goode officiating.
