DANVILLE, Va.- Nannie Belle Gibson, 80, of 270 Iris Lane, died early Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at her daughter's residence, 345 Arnett Boulevard, after the past week of declining health.
Born June 18, 1918, in Cascade community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Frank L. Wilson and Nannie Lou Booth Wilson.
She was married
to Patrick Henry Gibson, a retired farmer, who predeceased her.
She made her home in the Dry Fork community of Pittsylvania County for 14 years before moving to 270 Iris Lane 18 months ago. She was a mother and a homemaker and a member of the Dry Fork Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include two sons Frank Gibson of Burnell, Fla., and Johnny Gibson of Danville; four daughters, Rita Oakes, Juanita Hutson and Sandra Gibon Jones, all of Danville, and Rebecca Davis of Yanceyville, N.C.; two sisters Mamie Bray of Reidsville, N.C., and Viola Myers of Yanceyville; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Hutson Family cemetery on Iris Lane with the Rev. Hershel Stone officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Juanita Hutson, 265 Iris Lane.
Clara Neal
DANVILLE, Va.- Clara Lee Neal, 96, formerly of 1840 Fall Creek Drive, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after three years of declining health.
Born July 29, 1902, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William Patterson and Rosa Mays Patterson.
She was married
December 1921 Marvin Milton Neal, who predeceased her March 5, 1999.
She lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County where she was a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include five daughters Lucy N. Williams of Barstow, Calif., Verler N. Murphy of Spencer, Nellie N. Wallace, Mamie N. Pruitt and Nannie N. Nevins, all of Danville; four sons Harold Neal of Gladys, Avery Neal and Jack Neal, both of Danville, and Johnny Neal of Ringgold; 27 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Michael Wiles officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of her son Jack Neal, 621 Loomfixer Road, Danville.
Bertha Short
GRETNA, Va. - Bertha Shelton Short, 88, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, in Gretna Health Care Center.
Born Jan. 21, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charlie Shelton and Sallie Plymale Shelton.
She was married
to C.H. "Hub" Short, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Springfield Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son Wayne Short of Hurt; two daughters Peggy Preston of Hurt and Audrey McDowell of Burlington; one brother James Shelton Sr. of Gretna; three sisters, Laura Parker, Lucille Goad and Hilda Hines, all of Gretna; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Springfield Primitive Baptist Church with the Elder Raymond Goad and the Elder Marvin Brumfield officiating. Interment
will be in Gretna Burial Park.

Laura Beck
DRY FORK, Va. - Laura Wilson Beck, 71, of 15500 Franklin Turnpike, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health.
Born June 18, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Smith Wilson and Lelia Norton Wilson.
She was married
to Henry Taft Beck, who predeceased her Feb. 23, 1985.
She spent most of her life in Danville, and had lived in Pittsylvania County for the past seven years. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include five sons John H. Beck, Wayne S. Beck, Jerry L. Beck, Roger T. Beck and Charles J. Beck, all of Danville, Va.; three daughters, Rosa Lee Allen of Blairs, Nellie J. Matherly of Callands and Brenda F. Stanley of Elkin, N.C.; one brother Lewis Wilson of Danville; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Vermillion officiating. Burial will be in Beck Family cemetery in the Vance community.

Katherine Blair
DANVILLE, Va. - Katherine Swanson Blair, died Wednesday, April 28, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 24, 1910, in Stony Mills in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charles Joseph Blairs and Kate Pritchett Blair.
She served in the United States Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946 in Africa and Italy as a physical therapy officer. She lived most of her life in Huntington, W. Va. She was a graduate of University of North Carolina of Greensboro, N.C., and the Medical College of Virginia, in Richmond in the study of physical therapy. She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Nancy Blair Robinson of Washington, D.C.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jay Ashby officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her nieces, Martha B. Hylton and Sue Hylton Wickers, 280 Carolina Ave.

Rufus Callahan
DANVILLE, Va. - Rufus Matthew Callahan, 105, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Dec. 21, 1893, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John K. Callahan and Ellen Turpin Callahan.
He was married
in 1922, to Mary Hopkins Callahan, who predeceased him 1964, and later married
Janie H. Callahan in 1973, who also predeceased him 1986.
He was a charter member of Fairview United Methodist Church. He was a farmer in Pittsylvania County all of his life.
Survivors include two daughters Dolores Callahan Weatherford of Danville, Va., and Ellen Callahan Hall of Lake Wales, Fla.; 17 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren
He was predeceased by a son, Bernard J. Callahan.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Fairview United Methodist Church with the Rev. O.H. Burton Jr. officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Ray Grubbs
DANVILLE, Va. - Ray Murrell Grubbs, 55, of 138 Wesley Drive, Apt. 4, died Wednesday, April 28, 1999, at his residence. He had been in declining health since April 1997.
Born Dec. 22, 1943, in Danville, he was the son of Raymond Matthew Grubbs and Cynthia Grubbs Mangus, who survives.
He was of the Holiness faith, and lived most of his life in Danville.
He was retired due to health from Covenant Transport Company where he worked as a professional truck driver.
He was married
on Oct. 27, 1962, to Mary Frances Moore Grubbs, who survives.
Survivors in addition to his wife and mother of Danville include a son, Leonard Matthew Grubbs of Danville; two daughters, Melissa Rae Grubbs and Angela Hope Grubbs, both of Danville; one brother, Ricky Van Grubbs of Danville; three sisters, Judith Ann Rose of Danville, Jane G. Bray and Susan G. Gauldin, both of Pelham, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
He was pre-deceased by a brother, Lester Kent Grubbs.
Graveside funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m., at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating.

Josh Hazelwood
HALIFAX, Va. - Josh Hazelwood, 84, of 1166 Paul James Road, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at his home.
Born Feb. 12, 1915, in Halifax, he was the son of John Thomas Hazelwood and Karrie Owen Hazelwood.
He was a retired farmer and a member of Church of God of Prophecy in Scottsburg.
Survivors include five daughters, Edith H. Thomas of Halifax, Barbara Powell of Clover, Anita Wilborn of Clays Mill, Lucy Epps of Halifax, and Sally Snead of Scottsburg; one son, David Hazelwood of South Boston; two brothers, Tom Hazelwood of Danville and James Hazelwood of Clover; 24 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 13 step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Katie Stover Fuller Hazelwood, one son, George Thomas Hazelwood Sr., and five brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m., at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs and the Rev. Courtney W. Coffer officiating.
Burial will be in the Ebenezer Mennonite Church cemetery in South Boston.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight, 7-8:30 p.m., and at other times at the home, Paul James Road, Halifax.
