Ruth Wilkerson
DANVILLE, Va. - Ruth Whitfield Wilkerson, 92, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Feb. 15, 1907, in Hurdle Mills Community of Person County, N.C., she was the daughter of William Thomas Hawkins and Zenora Alice Wilkerson Hawkins.
She lived most of her life in Danville. She was married
to William Edward Whitfield, who predeceased May 29, 1979, and later to Charles Caviness Wilkerson, who predeceased her Aug. 11, 1997.
She was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church, the Ayers Bible Class, a member and past Worthy Matron of the Kaufman-Brydon Chapter 87 of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Danville Garden Club.
She was the last surviving member of her generation, and is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husbands, she was predeceased by two brothers, Floyd H. Hawkins and W. Rainey Hawkins and two sisters, Fannie Belle Gordon and Sadie Maude Davis.
A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. Dana Hunt officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home.
Lynn Calvert
DANVILLE, Va. - Lynn Stanley Calvert, 71, of 2516 Beechwood Lane, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at his residence.
Born May 29, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Henry Lee Calvert and Carrie Scearce Calvert.
He was married
April 8, 1949, to Inez Poteat Calvert, who survives.
He was a veteran in the United States Navy, serving during World War II. He was owner and operator of Lynn and Marks Grocery on Westover Drive for 21 years. He was of the Methodist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Mark Stanely Calvert of Danville; three sisters Ruby A. Calvert of Virginia, Louise Calvert Pitcher of Arlington and Cisie Calvert Scearce of Danville.
He was predeceased by one sister, Virginia Calvert Poteat.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Townes Memorial Chapel. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Elroy Gwynn Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Elroy H. Gwynn Sr., 78, of 844 Monroe St., died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 12, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of George Gwynn Sr. and Jenny Apple Gwynn.
He was married
to Gladys Florence Gwynn, who survives.
He was a member of the United States Navy and retired from Dan River Inc. after working many years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Emma Dallas of Danville; one son, Elroy H. Gwynn Jr. of Danville; two sisters, Geneva Stanfield and Eliza Gwynn, both of Danville; one brother, Augustus Gwynn of Ringgold; and a host of grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday, at the Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home with Deacon Elroy Gwynn Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Rebecca Jones
JAVA, Va. - Rebecca Walton Jones, 88, of 877 Riceville Road, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She had been in declining health for several years and in Roman Eagle for six months.
Born May 18, 1910, in the Java community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Richard Hickson Walton and the late Emma Lee Womack Walton.
Mrs. Jones had lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County where she had retired as a teacher from the Pittsylvania County Public School system. She was a graduate of the former Oak Level High School and of Averett College. Mrs. Jones had taught at the former Spring Garden Elementary School and the former Spring Garden High School. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Riceville where she was a former pianist. Mrs. Jones was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She was married
to Jamie McGuire "Jack" Jones, who died on April 20, 1980.
Survivors include three daughters, Sara Jones Bryant of Java, Jamie Jones Fuller of High Point, N.C., and Becky Jones of Greensboro, N.C.; one brother, William Garrett Walton of South Boston; two granddaughters, Dr. Jennifer Lynn Bryant of Charlotte, N.C., and Mary Katherine Fuller of High Point, N.C.
Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m., from the graveside in Highland Burial Park, by the Rev. Frank B. Fuller.
Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of funeral arrangements.
Glenn Payne
ELLENWOOD, Ga. - Glenn Willie Payne, 60, of 3779 Grant Road, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at Southern Regional Medical Hospital, Clayton County, Ga.
Born June 16, 1938, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of the late Artist T. Payne and Hattie B. Payne Overstreet, who survives.
He was married
to Marie Dove Ramsey Payne.
He was a pilot and served two tours in Vietnam and was a pilot instructor at Ft. Rooker, Ala. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his mother, survivors include four sons, G.W. Payne Jr, Douglas Payne, Justin Payne, and Danny Ramsey Payne, all of Georgia; one daughter, Linda Ramsey Mitchel of Georgia; four brothers, Marvin Payne, Melvin Overstreet, Allen Overstreet, all of Danville, Va., and Buddy Payne of Georgia; five sisters, Verdie P. Taylor, Linda P. Lovelace and Rachel P. Marshall, all of Danville, and Peggy P. Narror of California and Glendine P. Glenn of Georgia; and 12 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, David Overstreet of Virginia.
A funeral was held Tuesday at Fairview cemetery in Ellenwood, Ga., with the Rev. James Marable officiating.
Sibyl Starkey
DANVILLE, Va. - Sibyl Giles Starkey, 81, of 127 Seminole Dr., died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
Born June 24, 1917, in Danville, she was the daughter of Posie Gilmer Giles and Rosa Richardson Giles.
She was married
to B.C. Starkey Jr., who predeceased her.
She lived her life in the Danville area when prior to her retirement, she was employed with Jones Sausage Co. She was a graduate of Averett College and a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church and a member of The Colonial Dames.
Survivors include a number of cousins.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Ron Mateer officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
Herman Garland
DANVILLE, Va. - Herman L. Garland, 64, of 806 Monroe St., died Monday, April 26, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 16, 1935, in Danville, he was the son of the late Leroy Coleman and Susie Garland Wyllie, who survives.
He was retired from the U.S. Army.
In addition to his mother of Maryland, survivors include two daughters, Lesa Edwards of Sea Pleasant, Md., and Vonzelle Garland of Washington, D.C.; four sons, Ronnie Garland of Burnie, Tasmania, Australia, Cecil Garland of Washington, Bryan Garland and Wayne Garland, both of Maryland; two stepbrothers, Leroy Coleman Jr. and Frederick Coleman, both of Danville.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home with the Rev. Willie Toomer officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park with military rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Glenn Hedrick
DANVILLE, Va. - Glenn Rodgers Hedrick, 56, of 220 Franklin Turnpike, died Friday, April 30, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center, where he had been for a week. He had been in declining health for several months.
Born Aug. 5, 1942, in the Sandy Level community of Pittsyvania County, he was the son of the late Cleave Edwards Hedrick and Kathleen Bobbitt Hedrick, who survives.
He was an eight-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served in Vietnam. He lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. He had retired from Apac of Virginia, where he was equipment operator with 30 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of American Legion Post No. 1097.
In addition to his mother of Danville, survivors include one daughter, Cynthia "Cindy" H. Dowdy of Danville; one son, Randall Glenn Hedrick of Beltone, S.C.; two brothers, Ralph C. Hedrick of Danville and Alfred Dale Hedrick of Sutherlin; and one grandchild.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday in Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Freddie Vicks officiating.
The family will receive freinds 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence.
Ronald "Ronnie" Yeatts
DANVILLE, Va. - Ronald "Ronnie" Yeatts, 38, of 4036 Suburban Drive, died Thursday, April 29, 1999.
Born Dec. 10, 1960, in Danville, he was a son of Curtis Yeatts and Mary Millner Yeatts, both of whom survive.
He spent most of his life in Danville where he worked for Danville Lumber Co. and was a member of the Church of Christ.
In addition to his parents, survivors include one son, Michael D. Yeatts of Danville; one brother, Gerald Lee Yeatts of Danville; and one sister, Darleen Y. McBride of Danville.
A funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Danville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with the Rev. Jack Robertson and the Rev. Minnie D. Bates officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Lucille Bernard
ROCKY MOUNT, Va. - Lucille Webb Bernard, 73, of Rocky Mount, a devoted child of God, went to be with him on Friday, April 30, 1999.
She was born Feb. 2, 1926, a daughter of the late Percy and Maggie Farmer Webb. She was a member of Rocky Mount Church of God.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William R. Bernard.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Patty and Junior Sink of Rocky Mount; two sons and daughters-in-law, William (Brute) and Diane Bernard of Rocky Mount, and Timothy (Bo) and Kim Bernard of Rocky Mount; three grandchildren, Kara Bernard, Jessica Sink and Rebecca Sink; one step-grandchild, Stacy Sink; two sisters, Edith Murphy of Pelham, N.C., and Evelyn Gibson of Danville; one brother, James Forest Webb of Salem; one sister-in-law, Lutie Brugh of Rocky Mount; a beloved friend, Nancy Jones of Rocky Mount; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 3, 1999, at Rocky Mount Church of God with the Rev. Ron Hill and the Rev. David Jones officiating. Interment
will follow in High Street cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after noon today, where the family will also be from 7 to 9 p.m.
