Katherine Darnell
DANVILLE, Va. - Katherine Owens Darnell, 67, of 201 Swain Drive, died Friday, April 30, 1999, in the Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C., after two years of declining health.
Born Dec. 6, 1931, in Danville, she was the daughter of John Owens and Mabell Pruitt Owens.
She lived all of her life in Danville, where she had worked for a number of years for Dan River Inc. as an inspector in the former Riverside division. After leaving Dan River, she was a homemaker and became very dedicated to her hobby, art. She attended the River Oak Church of God.
She is survived by one daughter, Cynthia Darnell Carson of Danville; one son, Mark Darnell of High Point, N.C.; one granddaughter, Stephanie H. Mangum of Danville; one grandson, John H. Hiatt II of Capron; a special sister, Dorothy Mays of Danville; three sisters-in-law, Alice Pruitt of Brookneal, and Ruth McGregor and Ollie Mabe, both of Danville; and a son of heart, Peter Mountcastle of High Point.
On Sept. 6, 1953, she was married
to William Thomas "Bill" Darnell. He died on April 18, 1991.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday from Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Jack Robertson officiating. Interment
will be in the Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Herman Garland
DANVILLE, Va. - Herman L. Garland, 64, of 806 Monroe St., died Monday, April 26, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 16, 1935, in Danville, he was the son of the late Leroy Coleman and Susie Garland Wyllie, who survives.
He was retired from the U.S. Army.
In addition to his mother of Maryland, survivors include two daughters, Lesa Edwards of Sea Pleasant, Md., and Vonzelle Garland of Washington, D.C.; four sons, Ronnie Garland of Burnie, Tasmania, Australia, Cecil Garland of Washington, Bryan Garland and Wayne Garland, both of Maryland; two stepbrothers, Leroy Coleman Jr. and Frederick Coleman, both of Danville.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at the chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home with the Rev. Willie Toomer officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park with military rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Lacy Hammock Jr.
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Lacy Edward Hammock Jr., 45, of 1050 Bane St., Lot 29, Westside Trailer Park, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, in Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Sept. 25, 1953, in Halifax County, he was the son of Lacy Edward Hammock Sr. and Elsie Wilson Tomlin Hammock.
He is survived by one daughter, Linda Hammock Miles of South Boston; one son, Lacy Edward Hammock III of Halifax; three brothers, Daniel Raymond Hammock of Mobile, Ala., Randy Lynn Hammock of Collinsville, and Larry Davis of Ringgold; one sister, Betty Jean Stevens of Nathalie; and five grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Carol Hammock Barbour.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Michael Terry officiating. Burial will be in New Bethel Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Glenn Hedrick
DANVILLE, Va. - Glenn Rodgers Hedrick, 56, of 220 Franklin Turnpike, died Friday, April 30, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center, where he had been for a week. He had been in declining health for several months.
Born Aug. 5, 1942, in the Sandy Level community of Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Cleave Edwards Hedrick and Kathleen Bobbitt Hedrick, who survives.
He was an eight-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served in Vietnam. He lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. He had retired from Apac of Virginia, where he was equipment operator with 30 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of American Legion Post No. 1097.
In addition to his mother of Danville, survivors include one daughter, Cynthia "Cindy" H. Dowdy of Danville; one son, Randall "Randy" Glenn Hedrick of Beltone, S.C.; two brothers, Ralph C. Hedrick of Danville and Alfred Dale Hedrick of Sutherlin; and one grandchild.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday in Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Freddie Vicks officiating, and with military honors by the U.S. Air Force from Seymore Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, N.C.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence.
Virginia Holliday
DANVILLE, Va. - Virginia Timms Holliday, 74, of 316 Robertson Ave., died Friday, April 30, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
She was the daughter of Clarence J. Timms and Jesse Lee Timms.
She had lived in Watkins Glen, N.Y., before moving to Danville in 1961. She was associated with the Danville Memorial Hospital School of Nursing as an instructor and later became director of nursing services until her retirement in 1987.
She was a graduate of Keuka College in Keuka, N.Y.
After retiring, she became a volunteer at the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, a former board member of the Danville YWCA, a former board member of the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, a volunteer at the Danville Free Clinic, and a volunteer at God's Store House.
She was active in the care of her friends and neighbors.
Survivors include her husband, Jackson Holliday of the residence; three sons, Carl J. Holliday of Greensboro, N.C., Bruce Robert Holliday of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Douglas M. Holliday of Dry Fork; one daughter, Sarah J. DeMun of Seattle, Wash.; one brother, William Timms of Kingman, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Jonathan T. Holliday.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jack F. Heinsohn Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home.
Willie Kernodle
DANVILLE, Va. - Willie Thomas Kernodle, 55, of 124 Chatelaine Ave., died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at the V.A. Medical Facility in Durham, N.C.
Born Nov. 30, 1943, in Danville, he was a son of the late James H. Kernodle and Virginia Williams Kernodle. He was educated in the Danville public school system and worked as a mechanic.
In additional to his mother of Danville, survivors include four sisters, Ruth Anderson, Jennie McClary, Rosalie Hairston, and Annie Mae Kernodle, all of Danville; and two brothers, William H. Kernodle and Robert Kernodle, both of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday at Trinity Baptist Church. Interment
with military rites by American Legion Post No. 325 will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Ruth Anderson, at 123 Winslow St.

Steven Payne
DANVILLE, Va. - Steven Alan Payne, 44, of 1523 Jamerson Road North, died Saturday, May 1, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health.
Born Jan. 24, 1955, in Danville, he was the son of David Jackson Payne Jr. and Marjorie Hubbard Payne.
He lived his entire life in Pittsylvania County and worked as a staff engineer for John W. Daniel & Co. He received his AAS degree from Danville Community College in drafting and design and a bachelor of science in engineering from Old Dominion University.
He was also a member of Sharon Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon, a Sunday school teacher, an organist, and treasurer.
In addition to his father of Danville, survivors include his wife, Donna Austin Payne of the residence; one son, Dewey Jackson Payne of the residence; and one brother, David L. Payne Sr. of Danville.
A funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday from Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Allen Holder officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Laura Andrews
GRETNA, Va. - Laura Keen Andrews, 86, of Gretna, died Sunday, May 2, 1999, in Gretna Health Center.
Born May 12, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Aaron H. Keen and Blanche Yeatts Keen.
Mrs. Andrews was married
to the late Edwin J. Andrews Sr.
Mrs. Andrews was a member of the Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church. She was a retired teacher with the Pittsylvania County Schools, a charter member of the Gretna Garden Club and a member of the Thomas Carter Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Edwin and Iva Jean Andrews Jr. of Chatham; two grandchildren, Dr. Laura J. Andrews of Hays, Kan., and Kathleen A. Tutt of Wichita Falls, Texas; and two great grandchildren, Elizabeth and Sarah Tutt.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 4, 1999 at Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church by Dr. Edward Wright. Interment
will follow in the Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7-8 p.m. today at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her son and daughter-in-law, Edwin and Iva Jean Andrews, of 228 Peach St., Chatham.

George Anthony
HURT, Va. - George Edward Anthony, 54, of 3064 Grit Road, died Saturday, morning in the Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born June 22, 1944, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Leroy Anthony and Reba White Anthony.
He was married
to the late Dorothy Elaine Anthony.
Prior to his retirement on disability, he was employed at Klopman Mills in Hurt. He was an Army veteran and a member of the National Guard Reserves. He was a member of the New Second Buffalo Baptist Church at Halifax County.
Survivors include one son, Shawn Payne of Altavista; three daughters, Joyce Jennings and her husband Paul Darnell Jennings and Angela Anthony all of Hurt, and Tamisha Payne of Altavista; two sisters, Mrs. Shirley Tardy and Mrs. Lois Fitzgerald, both of New Jersey; four grandchildren; a devoted friend, Billy Yuille of Brookneal, and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A funeral will be comducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. from the New Second Buffalo Baptist Church by the Rev. William Yancey. Burial will follow in the Old Second Buffalo cemetery with military honors by VFW 4165 and DAV 46 of Altavista.
