Add Roy Barbour
DANVILLE, Va. - Add Roy "Bob" Barbour, 80, of 621 Westover Drive, died Sunday morning, May 2, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 20, 1918, in Franklin County, he was the son of Otha W. Barbour and Lelia Brown Barbour.
He lived most of his life in Danville and was formerly employed with Plumbing Mills and Supply Co. He later owned and operated his own plumbing business until his retirement.
He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 325 and the Danville Lodge No. 225 BPO Elks.
Survivors include two sisters, Leila B. "Tillie" Wentz of Danville and Virginia B. Parker of St. Lucie, Fla.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Billy Scearce officiating. Full military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Wentz, 145 Wentz Circle.
Mary Clanton
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Moore Patterson Clanton, of 409 Hermitage Drive, died Friday, April 30, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born in Danville, she was the daughter of Floyd Brown and Margaret Moore Brown.
She is survived by three daughters, Diane Paterson and Priscilla Wilson, both of Danville, and Annette Grandy of Durham, N.C.; and one son, Lamont Patterson of Durham, N.C.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from Union Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Samuel Griffith officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at 409 Hermitage Drive, Apt. A.

Katherine Darnell
DANVILLE, Va. - Katherine Owens Darnell, 67, of 201 Swain Drive, died Friday, April 30, 1999, in the Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C., after two years of declining health.
Born Dec. 6, 1931, in Danville, she was the daughter of John Owens and Mabel Pruitt Darnell.
She lived all of her life in Danville, where she had worked for a number of years for Dan River Inc. as an inspector in the former Riverside division. After leaving Dan River, she was a homemaker and became very dedicated to her hobby, art. She attended the River Oak Church of God.
She is survived by one daughter, Cynthia Darnell Carson of Danville; one son, Mark David Darnell of High Point, N.C.; one granddaughter, Stephanie C. Mangum of Danville; one grandson, John H. Hyatt II of Capron; a special sister, Dorothy Mays of Danville; three sisters-in-law, Alice Pruitt of Brookneal, and Ruth McGregor and Ollie Mabe, both of Danville; and a son of heart, Peter Mountcastle of High Point.
On Sept. 6, 1953, she was married
to William Thomas "Bill" Darnell. He died on April 18, 1991.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday from Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Jack Robertson, the Rev. Ray Wiggs and the Rev James Graham officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Lonnie Ewell
CHATHAM, Va. - Lonnie Lee Ewell, 35, of 1080 Ewell Lane, died Friday, April 30, 1999, in Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Born April 24, 1964, in Halifax County, he was the son of Johnnie R. and Susie W. Ewell, who survive.
He was a member of Mountain Grove Missionary Baptist Church and was an employee of O'Sullivan Furniture Co.
In addition to his parents, survivors include one son, Tyriek J. Deshazor of Danville; one brother, Robert S. Ewell of Vernon Hill; four sisters, Christine E. Anderson of Blairs, Penny M. Wilson of Vernon Hill, and Carol M. Tanner and Doris A. Ewell of Ringgold; and a maternal grandmother, Charolotte Williams of Keeling.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mountain Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Arthur E. Crews officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of his parents at 1080 Ewell Lane, Vernon Hill.

Lewis Lee
ALTON, Va. - Lewis Jerry Lee, 52, of 4134 Pointer Road, Alton, died Friday, April 30, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
Born Oct. 15, 1946, in Halifax County, he was the son of Hildred Stewart and Martha Lee Farmer, who survives.
He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He attended the public schools of Halifax County.
In addition to his mother of the home, survivors include four sisters, Naomi Badger of the home, Willie M. Bailey of Milton, N.C., Nancy Ferrell of Danville, and Clara Stewart of Roxboro, N.C.; and five brothers, Ruben Farmer, Johnnie Pointer and John Jones all of Alton, Ernest M. Jones of New Rochelle, N.Y., and Harvey Ferrell of Danville.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Word of Faith Church in Milton, N.C., with Bishop Edward Breedlove officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from noon to 8 p.m. today at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel.
Dora Shumate
DANVILLE, Va. - Dora Bell Karnes Shumate, 79, of 1333 Myrtle Ave., died Saturday, May 1, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center after many years of declining health.
Born June 4, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Robert Lee Karnes and Lola Hanks Karnes Osborne.
She lived in Danville most of her life. She was a member of Third Avenue Christian Church and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, Unit 19.
She was married
to George Spangle Shumate on July 4, 1936, and he died in December of 1982.
She is survived by one son, Carroll W. Shumate of Danville; one daughter, Lorrine Joyce S. Dawson of Danville; one sister, Junia K. Payne of Virginia Beach; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 4 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Freddie Vicks officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the residence.
Annie Williams
RURAL RETREAT, Va. - Annie Perdita Farson Musser Williams, 85, of Rural Retreat, Va., died early Sunday, May 2, 1999, at her residence.
She was born in Pittsylvania County, the daughter of the late Samuel and Lottie Smith Farson.
Mrs. Williams had lived most of her life in Rural Retreat and was the oldest living member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. She was a retired school teacher, author and local historian.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ernest C. Musser Jr.; her second husband, R.G. Williams; a brother, James Farson; one sister, Irma Reynolds and a step-son, Ellis Williams.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Lottie and James F. Rigney of Danville and Priscilla and William H. Hall of Bristol; one son and daughter-in-law, Ernest C. III and Lois Musser of Rural Retreat; six grandsons, James F. Rigney Jr., Ernest C. Musser IV, Temple S. Musser, Hunter D. Musser, Roderick A. Hall and William E.L. Hall; five granddaughters, Perdita Diane R. Reynolds, Samantha H. Quesenberry, Tonya H. Bowyer, Cheyenne C. Musser and Desiree D. Musser; one step-daughter, Marie Bailey of Crockett; one foster son, Don Widener of Rural Retreat; one close step-nephew, Robert Moore of Hopewell; two sisters, Mozelle Farthing of Danville and Alpha Tucker of South Boston; one brother, Basil Farson of Java; one sister-in-law, Nellie Farson of Danville; 10 great grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and several step-great grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Pastor Joe Shumate officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Lindsey Funeral Home and at the residence.
The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the endowment fund of the St. Paul cemetery Association or to the American Cancer Society.
Mae Williams
DANVILLE, Va. - Mae Henderson Williams, 86, died Monday, May 3, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Feb. 12, 1913, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Walker E. Henderson and Maude McSherry Henderson.
She was married
to Owen A. Williams who predeceased her.
She was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son, Ralph W. Williams of Roanoke; three sisters, Thelma Henderson and Mildred H. Solomon, both of Paces, and Myrtle H. Pittard of Virginia Beach; and one grandchild.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ronald W. Mateer officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Andrew Wilson Jr.
BLAIRS, Va. - Andrew Lewis Wilson Jr., 54, of 1657 Malmaison Road, died Saturday, May 1, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 28, 1944, he was the son of the late Andrew L. Wilson Sr. and Louise Hunt Wilson, who survives.
He was married
to Clara Wilson.
He was employed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company until his health began to fail. He was also a United States veteran and served in the Virginia National Guard.
In addition to his mother, survivors include four daughters, Andrea Wilson of Blairs, Eboni Wilson, Gwen Brown and Jackie Howerton, all of Danville; one son, Andrew L. Wilson III of Blairs; two sisters, Gurdine W. Smith of Dry Fork, and Doris Hall of Michigan; and two brothers, Frederick Wilson and James Wilson, both of Danvile.
A funeral will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. Cecil Bridgeforth officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post No. 325.

Bessie Brown
BLAIRS, Va. - Bessie Bell Dove Brown, 91, of 1297 Hunters Lane, died Monday, May 3, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital after two years of declining health.
Born Sept. 21, 1907, in Hurt, she was the daughter of Charlie Dove and Elizabeth Simpson Dove.
She was married
to Walter Charlie Brown who predeceased her.
She lived her life in Pittsylvania County and the Danville area where she was a member of Shermont Baptist Church and past president of the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class. She was also a homemaker.
Survivors include two sons, Howard Brown of Danville and Roy Brown of Blairs; one daughter, Irene Dillard of Axton; one sister, Lucille Chatham of Danville; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was also predeceased by one daughter, Shirley Evans; four sisters and nine brothers.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. today at Shermont Baptist Church with the Rev. William Soyars officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Garden.
