William Gatewood
DANVILLE, Va. - William Lee Gatewood, 57, of 235 Sylvan Road, died Sunday, May 9, 1999 at his residence.
Born June 27, 1941, in Baltimore, Md., he was the son of the late William Henry Gatewood and Polly Ann Thompson Gatewood, who survives.
He was employed by Dan River Inc. for 34 years.
In addition to his mother, survivors include three daughters, April Dawn Gatewood of Washington, D.C., Norman Jean Gatewood of Danville and Jennifer Gatewood of Rocky Mountain, N.C.; three sons, Stanley Gatewood of Charlottesville, Frankie Gatewood of Cascade, and Lee Gatewood of Danville; one sister, Sallie Royal of Danville.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the Chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home with the Rev. James Stewart officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Martha Rowland
DANVILLE, Va. - Martha Barbour Rowland, 58, of 124 Longview Court, died Wednesday afternoon, May 12, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after declining in health since November 1998.
Mrs. Rowland was born in Pittsylvania County on November 24, 1940, a daughter of the late William Paul Barbour and Hilda McDaniel Barbour.
Mrs. Rowland married
Tommy Lee Rowland on December 13, 1958, who survives.
Mrs. Rowland had spent most of her life in the Danville area, and was employed as the quality control supervisor in the sewing room at Dan River, Inc. for 37 years. She was the President of the Virginia Piedmont ABWA Chapter and treasuerer of the Riverbend Ladies Auxillary, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence include one son, Jerry Rowland of Danville; and one brother, Malcolm "Ray" Barbour of Danville; and one granddaughter, Brandi Rowland of Danville; and six nieces and four nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Don Davidson and the Rev. Don Frank. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m., and at other times at the residence.

Emily Childress
HALIFAX, Va. - Emily Barksdale Childress, 85, of Vernon Hill, died Monday, May 10, 1999, at her residence.
She was born March 7, 1914, in Halifax County.
Survivors include five daughters, Louise Bailey of Jersey City, N.J., Martha Ferrell and Annie Wade, both of Engelwood, N.J., Ruby Wesson of Lawrenceville and Ruth Crite of Brown Summit, N.C.; four sons, Robert Childress Sr. of Franklin, Tenn., Leonard Childress and Clearance Childress, both of Jersey City, N.J., and Ernest Childress of Grove City, Pa.; two sisters, Annie Moore of Jersey City, N.J., and Cora Grimes of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 46 grandchildren, 74 great-grandchildren, and 19 great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Pleasant Christian Methodist Episcopal Church with the Rev. Ronald Dean officiating. Interment
will be in the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. today at Crawford, Garrett & Burton Funeral Services.
At other times, the family will receive friends at the residence, 1168 Wilson Memorial Trail, Vernon Hill.
Destiny Clay
DANVILLE, Va. - Destiny Margaret Clay, of 613 Long Circle, died at birth, Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at the Franklin County Memorial Hospital, Rocky Mount.
She was the daughter of Charlie Clay Jr. and Timberly Long Clay.
In addition to her parents of Brosville, survivors include her paternal grandparents Charlie Clay Sr. and Patricia Dale Curry, both of Danville; her maternal grandparents, Jimmy A. Long of Danville, and Margaret Rigney Smith of Sandy Level; her paternal great-grandparents, Charlie Henry Clay and Edith Elliott, both of Danville; her maternal great-grandparents, Alma Long of Brosville, and Herman and Beulah Rigney of Brosville.
A funeral will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard McDowell and the Rev. John Clark officiating. Burial will be in the Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Lewis Cook
AIKEN, S.C. - Lewis Harmon Cook, 92, formerly of Danville, Va., died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, in Aiken, S.C.
He was the son of John Lewis and Maggie Carter Cook.
He was married
to Lelia Barton Cook, who predeceased him.
He retired from Dan River Inc. in 1976, after 46 years in production control scheduling and planning. He was former member of Rivermont Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Louis Cook O'Connor; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Shellhouse Funeral Home Inc. was in charge of service.
Lizzie Felts
DANVILLE, Va. - Lizzie Staton Felts, 84, of 213 Staton Drive, died Wednesday, May 12, 1999, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home after declining in health for the past five years.
Born May 10, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Henry H. Staton and Nizzie Barker Staton.
She was married
Dec. 24, 1934, to Jesse Holden Felts, who survives.
She lived all of her life on Staton Drive in the Ringgold community of Pittsylvania County. She was a homemaker and a charter member of Lakewood Evangelical Methodist Church where she was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class which was formerly the Berean Sunday School Class for over 60 years.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Lizzie Ann Felts of the residence; two sons, Jesse H. Felts Jr. of Danville and Charles J. Felts of Richmond; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Ella Felts Parker; three brothers and one sister.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today, at Lakewood Evangelical Methodist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Burks officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

DANVILLE, Va. - Lelia H. Barker, 600 Main St., died Friday, May 14, 1999, in Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Nov. 15, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Albert Hamlet and Berkley Hodnett Hamlett.
She was married
to George Barker, who predeceased her in 1962.
Survivors include one sister, Margaret Shelton of Hurt; two half-sisters, Velma Sater and Odie Elliott, both of Danville; and one half-brother, Douglas Hamlett of Blairs.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Schoolfield cemetery with the Rev. Rebecca Yow officiating.
The family will receive friends at her sister's home, 450 Brightwell Drive.

Linda Barksdale
DANVILLE, Va. - Linda Darnel Barksdale, 49, of 1447 Abbott St., died Thursday, May 13, 1999, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 18, 1949, in Danville, she was the daughter of William T. Barksdale and Minnie Hughes Barksdale.
She was a laborer for Health-Tex and a member of the Vance Street Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, LeMonte Barksdale of Newark, N.J., and Michael Barksdale of Danville; three brothers, Harold Barksdale of Baltimore, Lloyd Barksdale and Alfred Barksdale, both of Egg Harbor, Md; and one sister, Ethel Barksdale of East Orange, N.J.
A funeral will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Vance Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Herbert L. Dickerson officiating. Interment
will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
