Johnnie Elgin
BASSETT, Va. - Johnnie Richard Elgin, 66, of 944 Sunnybrook Circle, died Thursday, May 13, 1999 at Martinsville Memorial Hospital.
Born in Patrick County on Jan. 6, 1933, he was the son of Charlie Elgin and Losia Weaver Elgin. He was retired from J.P. Stevens and E.C.A. of Woolwine and a graduate of Woolwine High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean War. He was also a member of Woolwine United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Linnie Ridinger Hutchens Elgin, of the home; two daughters, Lou Anne Mullens of Durant, Okla. and Valerie Foley of Woolwine; one son, Johnny Richard (Ricky) Elgin Jr. of Danville; one sister, Virginia Ann Martin of Woolwine; one half-brother, Allen DeHart of Louisburg, N.C.; three stepsons, Terry Hutchens of Lynchburg, Tracy Hutchens of Bassett, and Tony Hutchens of Bassett; and eight grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, and one step-great-grandchild.
He was predeceased one brother, Willie Lee Elgin; three half-brothers, Moir DeHart, Joe Elgin, and Lynn Elgin; and one half-sister, Martha Edwards.
Funeral services will be held Saturday 2 p.m. in the Collins Funeral Chapel with Pastor Brian Sixbey and the Rev. Doby Salmons officiating. Interment
will be in the Woolwine United Methodist Church cemetery.

Ray Guthrie
NATHALIE, Va. - Ray Thornton Guthrie, 1187 Alchie Lane, died Thursday, May 13, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital.
Born Oct. 10, 1914, in Halifax County, he was the son of Archer James Guthrie and Lena Roark Guthrie.
He was married
to Lenwood Strickland Guthrie.
He was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Millstone and was a retired deacon.
In addition to his wife of Nathalie, survivors include two daughters, Jane Wimbish Hudson of Montpelier and Dale G. Jackson of Clarks Summit, Pa.; one brother, Neil T. Guthrie of Nathalie; two sisters, Elaine G. Fisher and Clarice G. Lewis, both of Nathalie; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Millstone with the Rev. Bob Watts officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Ethel Littleton
LYNCHBURG, Va. - Ethel Lovelace Littleton, 75, of 123 Holcombe Path Road, died Thursday, May 13, 1999 in Avante Nursing Home.
Born in Pittsylvania County on Nov. 20, 1923, she was the daughter of the Fred Lovelace and Missie Patrick Lovelace.
She was married
to Covell Littleton, who predeceased her.
She was baptized and joined the Staunton Baptist Church in Long Island and later moved to Los Angeles, where she resided until 1997.
She is survived by three sisters, Fannie Jones of Brooklyn, N.Y., Nannie Tweedy and Margaret Lovelace, both of New York City; one brother, Isaiah Lovelace of Lynchburg.
She was also predeceased by one brother, Ocie Lovelace.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday from the Staunton Baptist Church with Dr. P.A. Medley and the Rev. Carlton Jackson officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Bessie Lyon
DANVILLE, Va. - Bessie Thornton Lyon, 98, formerly of 151 Marshall Terrace, died Friday afternoon, May 14, 1999, in the Roman Eagle Memorial Nursing Home.
Born Oct. 17, 1900, in Danville, she was the daughter of John Bell Thornton and Patty St. John Atkins Thornton.
She was married
to Hebert H. Lyon, who predeceased her Nov. 21, 1956.
She lived all her life in Danville and was the last surviving member of her generation. She was a member of First Baptist Church and a former member of The Wednesday Club and also a former Red Cross Volunteer.
Survivors include six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two daughters, Patricia Lyon Martin and Hope Lyon Traynham; three sisters, Lillian Thornton, Edna Talley and Evelyn Johnson; and one brother, Walter Thornton.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday from Mountain View cemetery with Dr. Joey Faucette officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her granddaughter Martha Martin, 323-A West Main Street.

Hobert Owens
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Hobert Herman Owens, 46, died Thursday, May 13, 1999.
Born Sept. 7, 1952, he was the son of Eleanor Halpine Owens.
He was a lifelong resident of Jacksonsville, a member of First Baptist Church of Garden City and a truck driver for Prime Incorporated.
In addition to his mother, survivors include three sisters, Cynthia Owens of Danville, Va., Emily Sue Johnson of Yulee and Teresa Ann Dalager of Middleburg; two brothers, Steven Lawrence Owens and Frank Andrew Owens, both of Jacksonville.
A funeral will be held 10 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church of Garden City with the Rev. Doyle Harper officiating. Burial will be Riverside Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 2-5 p.m. Sunday at George H. Hewell and Son Northside Funeral Home.
James Owen
DANVILLE, Va. - James Davis (J.D.) Owen, 62, of 122 Godfry St., died Thursday, May 13, 1999, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born in Halifax County on Sept. 9, 1936, he was the son of Otis Holt Owen and Rosa McCormick Owen.
He is survived by two sons, James Owen of New Bern, N.C., and Aubrey Owen of Danville; one brother, John Owen of South Boston; two sisters, Betty O. Francisco of South Boston and Ella O. Fulcher of Halifax; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, Eddie Michael Owen.
Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday in the McCormick-Owen family cemetery in Clays Mill with the Rev. Tony Brooks and the Rev. Freddie Vicks officiating.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home 7-8 p.m. today and at other times at the home of Ella and Bobby Fulcher, 509 Oak Lane, Halifax.

Clifford Eugene Greer
ROANOKE, Va. - Clifford Eugene ("Gene") Greer, 72, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, May 14, 1999.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving 17 years and was in World War II serving until the Cuban Missle Crisis. While he was serving in England, he met his late wife, Beryl Potter Greer. He was later transferred to the states.
Surviving are two sons amd daughters-in-law, Steven W. and Kathy B. Greer of Danville, David E. amd Vickie M. Greer of Roanoke; four grandchildren, Christy Renee Greer, Stacey Marie Greer, Jonathan Steven Greer, all of Danville, amd Joshua Aaron Greer of Roanoke; one brother, Justin Greer of Rocky Mount, N.C.; four sisters, Lura Talley, and Pearl Greer, both of Tazewell, Tressie Nipper, of Yorktown, and Dorothy Milton, of Miami; and a special friend Frances Eades of Roanoke.
Funeral services will be at Oakey's Vinton Chapel at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, 1999 with the Rev. George E. Stevenson officiating. Interment
with military honors will be in Sherwood Memorial Park.

Minnie A. Jones
BLAIRS, Va. - Minnie A. Jones, 98, of 316 Warehouse Rd., died at the residence Thursday, May 13, 1999.
Born March 10, 1901 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Floyd and Mittie Adams Jones.
She was married
to Charlie Jones who predeceased her.
She was a homemaker and a member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include five sons, the Rev. Nathaniel Jones, the Rev. Floyd Jones, and Freddie Jones, all of Blairs, Therman Jones of Salina, Kan., and Herman Jones of Mount Vernon, N.Y.; three daughters, Frances Bennett and Elsie King of Blairs, and Geraldine Hunt of Danville; 51 grandchildren; 95 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great grandchildren.
A funeral will be held Monday, at 1 p.m. at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. R.B. Cypress officiating.
Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.
A viewing will be today from 4 to 8 p.m. at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.
