ALTON, Va. - Alma Clark Howerton, 83, of 1075 Snow Hill Road, died Monday, May 17, 1999, at her residence.
Born May 2, 1916, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Roland Jackson Clark and Minnie Whitlow Clark.
She was married
to Luther Cage Howerton, who predeceased her.
She was a homemaker and a member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Edna C. Green of South Boston.
She also was predeceased by eight brothers.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Halifax Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Brooks Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Major Olen Fuller Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Major Olen Fuller Sr., 88, of 522 Franklin St. died Sunday, May 16, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 5, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Raleigh Fuller and Elizabeth Gwynn Fuller. He attended the Pittsylvania County Public Schools and was an auto mechanic and truck driver for National Homes in Martinsville, prior to his retirement.
Mr. Fuller was married
to Edna Garland Fuller, who predeceased him and later to Frankie Williams Fuller, who also preceded him in death.
Mr. Fuller is survived by four daughters, Mary Foster of Ringgold, Sophronia Thandiwe Umi, of East Windsor, N.J., Ida Fuller of Danville, and Constance Swanson of Martinsville; and two sons, Freddie Fuller Sr. of Kinston, N.C., and Raleigh G. Fuller Sr. of Greenville, N.C.
A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerome Morris officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at 522 Franklin St.
Mary R. Harvie
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary R. Harvie, 95, died Sunday, May 16, 1999 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Mrs. Harvie was born June 15, 1903 in Winston-Salem, N.C., the daughter of Henry Roane and Abigail C. Roane.
She was married
to Edwin James Harvie Sr., who predeceased her June 21, 1961.
Mrs. Harvie was a member of the Garden Club of Danville, the Wednesday Club, the Shakespeare Club, the Danville Music Study Club, the Colonial Dames and the D.A.R. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany.
Mrs. Harvie is survived by one son, Dr. Edwin J. Harvie Jr. of Danville; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Lewis Edwin Harvie.
Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. today from the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany by Father James Mathieson.
The family will be at her son's residence, 123 Blackwell Drive.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Edith Nester
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Edith Jefferson Nester of 657 Chatmoss Court Extension died Monday, May 17, 1999, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born in Callands, she was the daughter of Wade Keene Jefferson and Maude Wells Jefferson.
She was married
to Lloyd Alvin Nester, who predeceased her in 1994.
She was a graduate of Callands High School and was retired from DuPont Company with more than 26 years of service, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Collinsville and the Golden Circle Sunday School Class.
Surviving are three daughters, Patricia N. Pegram and Shelby Jean Richardson, both of Martinsville, and Jo Reedy of Roanoke; a sister, Bernice Ponton of Martinsville; a brother, Bill Jefferson of Rocky Mount; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday at McKee-Stone Funeral Services Chapel with Dr. Calvin Raines officiating. Interment
will follow in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at McKee-Stone Funeral Services.
Lloyd Ray Slayton
RICHMOND, Va. - Lloyd Ray Slayton, 73, of Richmond, died Sunday, May 16, 1999.
He was married
to Helen Slayton, who survives.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Penny R. Medlin of Midlothian; one step-son, Curtis Wells of Danville; one brother, Bobby Slayton; two sisters, Faye Jones and Margaret Hingley; and three grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel. Interment
will be in Dale Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. today and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Sallie Tarpley
DRY FORK, Va. - Sallie Mize Tarpley, 96, of 13105 Mount Cross Road, died Sunday, May 16, 1999, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home after a decline in health for several years.
Born Sept. 15, 1902, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of George Washington Mize and Nannie Elizabeth Pyron Mize.
She lived most of her live in the Brosville community of Pittsylvania County where she was a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was married
to William Wesley Tarpley on Dec. 29, 1920, who predeceased her on June 17, 1978.
She is survived by one son, Charles James Tarpley of Dry Fork; and two grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Mary Tarpley Carter, five brothers and two sisters.
She was the last survivor of her immediate family.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Allen Holder officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Giula Wiggs
DANVILLE, Va. - Giula Shipwash Wiggs, 73, of 234 Robin Drive, died Sunday, May 16, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 19, 1926, in Ivanhoe, Va., she was the daughter of Thomas Duley Shipwash and Annie Manuel Shipwash.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Kenneth Ray Wiggs.
She attended Ivanhoe High School. She taught adult Sunday School classes at Roanoke Church of God and was the former president of the Young Peoples Endeavor while her children were growing up.
She was employed at the Dan River cotton mill from 1941 to 1942, was a proofreader at the Danville Register & Bee from 1944 to 1945 and she was in management in the 1950s for Dairy Queen in Roanoke. She also was part owner of Stewartsville Service Center in the 1960s. She studied art for five years prior to 1978, and she founded an art supply and custom frame shop known as Gi's Art Supply in Fredricksburg in 1978. She sold her business for health reasons in 1983 and retired to Danville in 1987. She was a published poet and a distinguished member of the International Society of Poets.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, the Rev. Howard Ray Wiggs and Dennis Wayne Wiggs, both of Danville; one daughter, Pamela Joy Wiggs Oakes of Vinton; two sisters, Audene Shipwash Akers Gross of Rock Hill, S.C., and Violet Jewell Shipwash of Chester, S.C.; and 10 grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Tim and Sharon Nuckles and the Rev. Jackie Poe officiating. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park.

Dorothy Young
DANVILLE, Va. - Dorothy Shelton Young, 73, of 383 Juless St., died Sunday afternoon, May 16, 1999, at her residence after a decline in health since November.
Born in Danville on April 1, 1926, she was the daughter of James Silas Shelton and Daisy Woodson Shelton.
She was married
to Aubrey Young, who survives.
She spent most of her life in Yanceyville, N.C., and moved to Danville in November 1998. She was a nurse's aid who worked at Taylor's Nursing Home and at Hanover Mills in Yanceyville. She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include five sons, Jim Brooks Jr. of Richmond, Charles Lee Walker of Danville, Leonard Young of Yanceyville, N.C., Roger Young of Elon College, N.C., and Rickie Young of Caswell County, N.C.; two daughters, Tavie Hazelwood and Susan Collins, both of Danville; one brother, Jack D. Shelton of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; two sisters, Shirley S. Blalock and Mamie S. Pruitt, both of Danville; 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two daughters, Jane Farmer and Frances Marie Brooks.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce and the Rev. James Maye officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
'Jiggs' Eaton
CHATHAM, Va. - Noyd Grayson "Jiggs" Eaton, 80, of 3353 Fairview Road, died Tuesday, May 18, 1999, at his residence.
He was born Jan. 29, 1919, in Pittsylvania County.
A member of Open Bible Baptist Church, he was a farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Ora Hazel Adkins Eaton of the residence; two sons, Noyd Grayson "Butch" Eaton of Chatham and Billy Joe Eaton of Danville; two daughters, Donna Eaton Stout of Peach Tree City, Ga., and Janice Eaton Martin of Dry Fork; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from the Scott Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Carson A. Dalton and Curtis English officiating. Interment
will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
