Virginia Motley
DANVILLE, Va. - Virginia Thomas Motley, 83, of 569 Parker Road, formerly of 700 Oakland Drive, died early Monday morning, May 24, 1999, after one week at Danville Regional Medical Center and one year of declining health.
Born Sept. 15, 1915, in the Dry Fork community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Joel Hopkins Thomas and Rosa Hines Thomas.
She was married
to Clarence Dewey Motley, who predeceased her Sept. 12, 1980.
She lived on Oakland Drive for many years before moving to Parker Road to live with her daughter Faye Byrd. She was a seamstress at Dan River Inc. for 25 years and was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three daughters Linda Betterton of Gretna, Faye Byrd of Danville and Betty Hyler of Westover Hills; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son Richard D. Motley in 1987.
A funeral will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Crews and the Rev. Robert Vermillion officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at her daughter, Faye Byrd's residence.
Ronald Perkins
HALIFAX, Va. - Ronald Morris Perkins, 60, of 1058 Boxwood Trail, died Sunday, May 23, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Feb. 2, 1939, in Halifax County, Va., he was the son of Oscar Morris Perkins and Opal Adams Perkins.
He was a member of The Emanuel Episcopal Church.
Survivors include two daughters Brenda P. Adams of South Hill and Marcia P. Williams of Chase City; two sons Ronald Ray Perkins and David Edward Perkins, both of Chase City; four sisters Lois P. Crewdson of Lexington, Kathryn (Kitty) P. Blair of Danville, Nera Lee P. Hunt of Mechanicsville, and Ruth P. Adams of Halifax; one brother James L. Medley of Halifax; and 12 grandchildren.
A funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Emmanuel Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dr. Robert H. Crewdson officiating. A graveside service will follow at 11 a.m. at the Perkins Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his brother, James L. Medley, 1906 Boxwood Trail.
Justin Simmons
DANVILLE, Va. - Justin Alan Simmons, 18, of 553 Arlington Road, died Sunday, May 23, 1999, from an accidental gunshot wound.
Born June 24, 1980 in Danville, he was a son of Donald Ray Simmons and Diane Sarver Wilkins of Danville. He was a stepson of Michele Simmons and Dale Wilkins of Danville.
Simmons spent all of his life in Danville. He was of the Baptist faith and was a carpenter for Mike Henderson Construction.
In addition to his parents and stepparents, survivors include three brothers: James Richard Simmons II of Danville, and James Hunter Simmons and Carlton Scott Simmons, both of the residence; one sister, Christie Leigh Jeffries of Danville; his paternal grandmother, Ferbynel Eddins of Boston, Mass.; his steppaternal grandmother, Lutie C. Simmons of Waynesboro; his paternal step grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. B.G. Hammock of Danville; and his maternal stepgrandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Wilkins of Stem, N.C.
He was predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Birgie Goins Sarver.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Ray Wiggs. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and at the residence at other times.
Gracie Barnes
DANVILLE, Va. - Gracie Shaw Barnes, 86, died Monday morning, May 24, 1999, at the residence of her daughter, Pattie B. Turner, 203 Brentwood Drive after six months of declining health.
Born June 4, 1912, in Pageton, W.Va., she was the daughter of Albert Shaw and Ellen Taylor Shaw.
She was married
to Lonnie Lee Barnes, who predeceased her Dec. 10, 1998.
She spent most of her life in Danville where she was a homemaker and a member of Riveroak Church of God. She was a former Sunday school teacher and choir member.
Survivors include two sons, the Rev. Kenneth Barnes of Mt. Clinton and Emery Barnes of Martinsville; three daughters, Pattie B. Turner, Lois Tuck Warren and Jeanne B. Compton, all of Danville; one sister Stella Gillispie of Alexandria; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Riveroak Church of God with the Rev. Tim Nuckles, the Rev. Jackie Poe and the Rev. Ray Wiggs officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the church and at other times at the residence of her daughter.

Glennis Greenwood
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Glennis Moore Greenwood of 611 Linden Place died May 23, 1999 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was 73 years old.
Born Sept. 20, 1925, in Kenbridge, she was the daughter of George Edward Moore and Blanche Abernathy Moore. She was married
to Gilmer Glenn Greenwood.
Greenwood was a member of the the First Baptist Church where she was a former deacon and a Sunday school teacher for the Ruth Adult 4 Class.
She was a retired home economics teacher with the Halifax County School System, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the retired teachers' association.
Greenwood is survived by one sister, Susie M. Cieszko of Havlock, N.C.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Bob Fox will conduct the service. Burial will take place in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Margaret Henderson
DANVILLE, Va. - Margaret Iolene Wentz Henderson, 75, died Tuesday morning, May 25, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after one year of declining health.
Born April 2, 1924, in Danville, she was the daugher of the late Crawford Franklin Wentz and Mary Elizabeth Bullington Masson.
She was married
on December 17, 1941, to Roy Melvin Henderson, who predeceased her on December 18, 1996.
Mrs. Henderson spent most of her life in the Westover Hills community of Danville where she was a homemaker and formerly employed by J.C. Penney Co.
She was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church. She was a former Sunday School teacher, Training Union Leader, Girl Auxiliary leader and choir member.
She was a member of the VIP Fellowship of Riveroak Church, Danville Senior Citizen Club and Westover Fellowship.
Survivors include one daughter, Brenda Henderson Adams; one son, Steven Roy Henderson, both of Danville; one sister, Pearl Elizabeth Johnson of Kissimmee, Florida; one brother, Carlton Thomas Wentz of Brandon, Florida; and four grandchildren, Gary W. Adams of Roanoke, Tony R. Adams and Crystal G. Adams, both of Danville, and Phillip Henderson of Ringgold, and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she is prececeased by her brother, Crawford Franklin Wentz.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. William Blalock. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m., and at other times at the residence of her daughter, 435 Conifer Drive, Oak Hills.
Selma Prather
DANVILLE, Va. - Selma Reed Prather, 91, died Monday, May 24, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center where she had resided for the past 16 years.
Born June 8, 1907, in Ashe County, N.C., she was the daughter of William Allen Reed and Allie Richardson Reed.
She was married
to James Fred Prather who predeceased Oct. 30, 1990.
She had spent most of her life in the Danville area where she was a mother, homemaker, and a member of the First Church of the Bretheren on Glen Oak Drive.
Survivors include three daughters, Inez Gilbert of Spindale, N.C., Jean Floyd of Danville and Iris Kiesgen of Tampa, Fla.; one son, Archie D. Prather of Ringgold; two brothers, John M. Reed of Ringgold and Clayton B. Reed of Danville; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Leonard Martin officating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Shirley Ann Roach
GRETNA, Va. - Shirley Ann Roach, 53, of Gretna, died Monday, May 24, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born October 19, 1945, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Wesley Roach and Carrie Bosiger Roach. She was a member of Piney Fork Baptist Church.
She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn R. and John Ragsdale of Java; two nieces, Shannon Johnson of Chatham and Christina Ragsdale of Java.
Graveside services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 27, 1999, at Gretna Burial Park by the Rev. Joe Glass.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7-8:00 p.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her sister and brother-in-law Carolyn and John Ragsdale, 1669 Riceville Road, Java.

Nellie Slayton
RICHMOND, Va. - Nellie Throckmorton Slayton, 88, of Clover, died May 23, 1999, at the Medical College of Virginia. She was 88 years old.
Born Aug. 17, 1910, in Halifax County, Slayton was the daughter of William Walker Throckmorton and Susie J. Nichols. She was married
to E.L. Slayton, who preceded her in death.
Slayton was a retired bookkeeper for Slayton Electricity and Plumbing. She was a member of Clover Baptist Church.
Slayton is survived by her daughter, Vicki Campbell of Richmond, her sisters Christine Osborne of Saxe, and Erma Perkins of Newport News, and one grandson.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel in South Boston. The Rev. Tom Walker will officiate. Burial will follow in the Halifax Memorial Gardens in South Boston.
John Ball
CHRISTIANBURG, Va. - John Lewis Ball, 80, of Christianburg, Va., passed away in his sleep May 26, 1999.
He was born in Danville, Va., on June 1, 1918, a son of John and Lizzie Nichols Hall.
He was married
on May 31, 1940, to Marcia Goodson who passed away on July 12, 1998.
His sister, Annie Ball Ferrell and one son, John Michael Ball, preceded him in death.
Mr. Ball served in the United States Army during World War II in Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland with the 2nd General Hospital as a medical technician. During that time, he received several awards including the Bronze Star for his service. He retired from Dan River Mills after 39 years and was a foster parent with Danville Social Services to more than 100 children.
He is survived by a daughter, Marilyn L. Ball, a grandson, Patrick Michael Damon II and a special friend, J. Louise Rogers, all of Roanoke, Va.; and a son, Rev. Wayne Lee Ball of Rome, Italy.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, May 29, 1999, at 11:00 a.m. from the graveside at Highland Burial Park in Danville, Va., by the Rev. R.J. Barber, Jr. with military honors by the American Legion Post No. 325.

The family ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Dan River High School baseball program in memory of John Michael Ball or to the Salem Virginia Medical Center.
