Roy Brown
DANVILLE, Va. - Roy Brown, 56, of 2069 Twin Arch Road, died Tuesday, May 25, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 5, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Charlie Brown and Bessie Dove Brown.
He was married
Oct. 15, 1982, to Louise McBride Brown.
He was retired from car detailing and upholstery work after 16 years, due to declining health. He was a member of the United States Army, also the National Guard, serving 14 years. He was of the Holiness Faith.
Survivors include one daughter Rhonda Brown of Danville; two sons, Robert N. Toler of Williamsburg, and Ricky L. Toler of Danville; one step-daughter Tammy Carter of Durham, N.C.; one brother Howard Brown of Danville; one sister Irene Dillard of Axton; and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one sister Shirley Evans.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Motley officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park with military honors by the American Legion Memorial Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at the residence.
Mary Cook
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Jackson Cook, 78, died Tuesday, May 25, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Nursing Home.
Born Feb. 22, 1921, she was the daughter of William Aaron Jackson and Delia Net Crane Jackson.
She was married
to Dewey R. Cook, who predeceased her.
She worked as a finisher at Corning Glass Works until retirement. She was a member of the Corning retirees Club and a member of the Mount View Holiness Church.
Survivors include one sister Lorraine J. Manford of Kansas City, Mo.
She was predeceased by six sisters Elma Jackson, Virginia J. Ashby, Annie E. Jackson, Fannie J. Barbour, Celest J. Rigney, and Ruth J. Warren; one brother William A. Jackson, Jr.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joey Yeatts officiating. Burial will be in Schoolfied cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday and at other times at the residence of her brother-in-law, 82 Schoolfield Drive.
Leon Green
DANVILLE, Va. - Leon Green, 68, of 714 Colquohoun St., died Tuesday, May 25, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 9, 1930, in Danville, Va.
He was married
to Ethel Green, who predeceased him.
He served in the United States Marine Corps. He was a retired employee of DIMON Inc. and served for many years as vice president of the Tobacco Workers Union for DIMON.
Survivors include one daughter Odaris Jones of Danville; one step-daughter Wanda Hayes of Danville; three sons Larry Jones, Rickey Green and Barry Jones, all of Danville.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Olive Baptist Church with the Rev. James Walker officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his step-daughter, 638 Rosemary Lane.

Margaret Henderson
DANVILLE, Va. - Margaret Iolene Wentz Henderson, 75, died Tuesday morning, May 25, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after one year of declining health.
Born April 2, 1924, in Danville, she was the daugher of the late Crawford Franklin Wentz and Mary Bullington Wentz Masson.
She was married
on December 17, 1941, to Roy Melvin Henderson, who predeceased her on December 18, 1996.
Mrs. Henderson spent most of her life in the Westover Hills community of Danville where she was a homemaker and formerly employed by J.C. Penney Co. She was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church. She was a former Sunday School teacher, Training Union Leader, Girl Auxiliary leader and choir member. She was a member of the VIP Fellowship of Riveroak Church, Danville Senior Citizen Club and Westover Fellowship.
Survivors include one daughter, Brenda Henderson Adams; one son, Steven Roy Henderson, both of Danville; one sister, Pearl Elizabeth Johnson of Kissimmee, Florida; one brother, Carlton Thomas Wentz of Brandon, Florida; and four grandchildren, Gary W. Adams of Roanoke, Tony R. Adams and Crystal G. Adams, both of Danville, and Phillip Henderson of Ringgold, and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she is prececeased by her brother, Crawford Franklin Wentz.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. William Blalock. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m., and at other times at the residence of her daughter, 435 Conifer Drive, Oak Hills.
Susie Hundley
CASCADE, Va. - Susie Bray Hundley, 83, formerly of 573 Westfork Road, died Wednesday, May 26, 1999, at the Martinsville Rehab Center after a year of declining health.
Born June 27, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was the son of John Bray and Callie Eanes Bray.
She was married
to Jack Oliver Hundley, who predeceased her December 1977.
She spent most of her life in the Westfork community of Pittsylvania County. She worked for the Sales Knitting Mill in Martinsville as an inspector, and was a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church in Eden, N.C.
Survivors include three sons, the Rev. Gilmore J. Hundley and Tommy D. Hundley, both of Danville, and Bobby R. Hundley of Eden, N.C.; one daughter Hazel Henderson of Danville; one sister Bessie Carter of Axton; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 4 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Curtis Scotton officiating. Burial will be in Hundley Family cemetery, on Westfork Road.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of her son, the Rev. Gilmore Hundley, 1957 Blair Loop Road.
Jack "Poppi" Kegley
STAUNTON, Va. - Jack Ephriam "Poppo" Kegley, 73, of 26 Thornrose Ave., died at 10:20 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, 1999, at his residence.
He was born on July 17, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, a son of Ephriam Vister and Pearl Elizabeth (Williams) Kegley.
Following 27 years of service with the United States Navy, Mr. Kegley retired as a Master Chief. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict, and Viet Nam Era. He was a member of the American Legion, Sons of the Confederate Veterans, Rockbridge County Civil War Round Table, Kentucky Colonels, the Destroyer Escort Sailors Associating, and the Staunton V.F.W. Post No. 2216.
Masonic participation was a vital part of his life, and he received his 32nd degree. He was a member of Augusta Masonic Lodge No. 111 A.F. and A.M. where he was past master and secretary. He was also a member of the Lynchburg Consistory of the Scottish Rite Bodies.
Survivors include his wife, Doris (Harper) Kegley, to whom he was married
on April 27, 1946; a son, Ronald L. Kegley of Troutville; three daughters Patricia Lynette Overbey and Jo Ann Miller, both of Staunton, and Rebecca K. Gibson of Shenandoah; two brothers Charles O. Kegley of Hawaii and William R. Kegley of Tampa, Fla.; a sister Edna Gastor of Roxboro, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Randall S. Mays, Michael J. Gibson, Larry W. Overbey, David P. Gibson, M. Jason Kegley, Timothy M. Gibson, Christopher L. Overbey, S. Jacob Kegley, and Roert E. Overbey; and two great granddaughters, Talula Mays and Kensley Gibson.
A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday (May 28, 1999) in the Henry Funeral Home by the Rev. Dr. Roy O. Creech and Edward A. Fisher. Burial will follow in Thornrose cemetery with graveside rites by members of the Steeles Tavern V.F.W. Post No. 8279.
Active pallbearers will be his grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Glenn Hanger, Roy G. Handley, Charles Mann, Glenn W. Zendt, Joel A. McCauley, Robert E. Wilmouth, Matthew Hassett, Jeremy Gibson and Carson Harper.
There will be no public viewing.
A masonic service will be conducted at 7 p.m. today (May 27, 1999) in the funeral home by members of the Augusta Masonic Lodge after which the family will receive friends until 8:30 p.m. Friends may call at other times at his residence.

Selma Prather
DANVILLE, Va. - Selma Reed Prather, 91, died Monday, May 24, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center where she had resided for the past 16 years.
Born June 8, 1907, in Ashe County, N.C., she was the daughter of William Allen Reed and Allie Richardson Reed.
She was married
to James Fred Prather who predeceased Oct. 30, 1990.
She had spent most of her life in the Danville area where she was a mother, homemaker, and a member of the First Church of the Bretheren on Glen Oak Drive.
Survivors include three daughters, Inez Gilbert of Spindale, N.C., Jean Floyd of Danville and Iris Kiesgen of Tampa, Fla.; one son, Archie D. Prather of Ringgold; two brothers, John M. Reed of Ringgold and Clayton B. Reed of Danville; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Leonard Martin officating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Jean Floyd, 166 Naples St.
George Shankland
BLAIRS, Va. - George Archibald Shankland, age 79, died May 25, 1999, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Shankland was born Feb. 13, 1920, in Bethlehem, Pa. He was the son of the late Archibald Dalgesh Shankland and Eleanor Martin Shankland. He is survived by his wife Edythe Yates Shankland of the residence; two sons George Terrill Shankland of Mesa, Az., and Sandford Martin Shankland of Austin, Texas.
He was a member of the Wyoming Baptist Church in Cincinnati, and a World War II veteran. He was a Mechanical Engineer for the Air Craft division of General Electric Corp.

Ernest Travis
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Ernest C. Travis, 89, entered into rest on Tuesday, May 25, 1999.
He was born in Danville, Va., and was a Virginia Beach resident.
He retired after 30 years with the Dam Neck Fire Department of Virginia Beach as Captain. He was a member of Scott Memorial United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach. He was a master mason and member of Virginia Beach Lodge No. 274 A.F. & A.M.
He was predeceased in death by, his mother and father Pearl S. and William M. Travis, two brothers Walter Travis and Kemp Travis, a sister Nellie Youngblood, and his beloved daughter Lois Ann Pirrone.
He is survived by his wife Dollie Joyce Travis; a granddaughter Angela Marie Richards; one great grandson Austin Pirrone Richards; as well as a dedicated son-in-law T.T. Pirrone.
A funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. James C. Ullian in Altmeyer Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 28, 1999. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Virginia Beach with Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends tonight at the funeral home at 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.
