W.E. "Buddy" Abernathy
DANVILLE, Va. - W.E. "Buddy" Abernathy, 81, of 239 Motley Ave., died Saturday morning, May 29, 1999, at his residence. He had been in declining health for several months.
Born Jan. 27, 1918, in Ecceles W.Va., he was the son of Walter Martin Abernathy and Audrey Earl Reid Abernathy.
He worked for Dan River Inc. until his retirement as a boiler operator. He was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church for over 60 years. He served in many offices of the church, including Sunday Superintendent, as an usher, and he was on the Board of Trustees. He was also the church caretaker for many years. He was a member of the chapel Bible class of the church and a member of the Piedmont Area Layman's Fellowship. He was past president of Dan River Retiree's Club, and past Chaplain of the retiree's club. He served in the U.S. Army.
August 2, 1947, he married
Irene Sammons Abernathy.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Carolyn A. Whitehead of Virginia beach; two sons, Tony Abernathy of Graham, N.C., and Rev. David Abernathy of Danville; one brother, J. Reid Abernathy of Burlington, N.C.; two sisters, Doris Garrett of Buford, Ga., and Mae Shelton of Danville; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one sister, Beatrice Jett.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church with the Rev. Freddy Vicks officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the church and at other times at the residence and the residence of his son, 228 Timberlake Drive.

Pete Arnn
DANVILLE, Va. - John Oliver "Pete" Arnn, 80, of 257 Robertson Lane died Friday, May 28, 1999, in the Carteret General Hospital, Moorehead City, N.C.
Born March 6, 1919, in the Callands community of Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John Hundley Arnn and Jessie Wright Arnn.
He was married
to Delores Dillion Arnn, who died Aug. 26, 1994, and on Aug. 22, 1998, he was married
to Lola Brumfield Fuller Arnn, who survives.
He lived most of his life in the Dry Fork community of Pittsylvania County. He was a graduate of Brosville High School, the class of 1937. He had retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a rural letter carrier in the Dry Fork Post Office for 29 years. He was a member of North Main Baptist Church and a member of American Legion Post 325, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ballard Pruitt Post 647, the Retired Letter Carriers Association, and the Virginia Wildlife Club.
He served in the Army, 29th Division, 118th Regiment, E Company, in World War II. He was a survivor of the Omaha Beach invasion in 1944. In 1945, he was wounded in the battle at St. Lowe. He was awarded five Battle Ribbons, two Battle Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, Sharp Shooter Medal, the Good Accommodation Medal and the Purple Heart.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Ernest Randolph (Randy) Arnn of Dry Fork; his daughter-in-law, Myrtle A. Arnn of Dry Fork; two daughters, Loretta Sue Arnn and Judy Kaye A. Oakely, both of Winston Salem, N.C.; his son-in-law, Bill Oakley of Winston Salem, N.C.; four brothers A. Wright Arnn of Danville, Paul Arnn of Collinsville, Harold (Frog) Arnn of Dry Fork and Gene Arnn of Biloxi, Miss.; three sisters Estelle A. Yeatts of Chatham, Ann A. Hardy of Danville and Betty A. Ward of West Virginia; and one grandson, Blake Oliver Gentry.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Dorothy Frances Arnn and Juanita Arnn.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 31, at the North Main Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Eddie Davis and the Reverend Clay Knick officiating.
Interment will be in the Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors by the American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends today at North Main Baptist Church from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and at other times at the residence, 257 Robertson Lane, off Route 41.

Edgar Boyd
DANVILLE, Va. - Edgar Boyd, 88, of 222 Courtland St., Holiday Village, died Wednesday, May 26, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 7, 1911, in Virginia, he was the son of James Oscar Boyd and Harriett Brandon Boyd.
He was married
to Lemma Snipes Boyd, who predeceased him.
He was an employee with DIMON Inc. for many ears before his retirement.
Survivors include three nieces, Lula Williams, Dora Lee Walters and Daisy Reid, all of Danville.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Holy Tabernacle Church of Jesus Christ with the Bishop Peggy Motley officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his niece, Lula Williams, 202 Henry St.

Raymond Gravely
AXTON, Va. - Raymond Gravely, 79, of Daniel Road, died Friday, May 28, 1999, at his residence.
Born Nov. 7, 1919, in Schoolfield, he was the son of Louise Gravely Reedy.
He was a disabled veteran who fought in the Army in World War II. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was married
to Parnell Wilson Gravely, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, JoAnn G. Wright of Collinsville; one son, Raymond E. Gravely of Danville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Norris Funeral Services Chapel with the Rev. Joe C. Shockley officiating. Interment
will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

Joshua Hardison
DANVILLE, Va. - Joshua David Hardison, 20, of 3767 Vandola Road, died Friday, May 28, 1999, at 6:05 p.m. in Carillion Memorial Rehabilitation Center, Roanoke, as a result of a truck accident May 8, 1999. He had been a patient at the rehabilitation center for three days.
Mr. Hardison was born Aug. 29, 1978, in Danville, a son of Malcolm Theodore Hardison and Cynthia Mass Parker.
He attended Tunstall High School. He wrote music and was a musician and artist. He was a member of Vandola Baptist Church. He worked for Dameron Plumbing Contractors.
In addition to his mother of Vandola Road and his father of Richmond, survivors include his stepfather, Robby Parker of Vandola Road; one brother, Justin, of Vandola Road; his maternal grandparents, Jack and Margaret Moss of Vandola Road; and his paternal grandmother, Mary Hardison of Danville. He also leaves a special friend, Cristol Johnson.
He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Durham L. Hardison Sr.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. LeRoy Clack officiating. Burial will be in Vandola Community cemetery, Vandola Road.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Jack and Margaret Moss, 3767 Vandola Road.

Edward Haskins
CHATHAM, Va. - Edward Thomas Haskins, 73, of 3177 Toshes Road, died Saturday, May 29, 1999, at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg.
Born Nov. 24, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Walter John Hoskins and Mattie Lou Hall Hoskins.
He was a member of New Bethel Church of the Brethren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie Osborne Haskins.
Survivors include three daughters, Brenda H. Kendrick of Chatham, Jeanette H. Doss of Gretna and Patricia Haskins Adams of Rocky Mount; one son Allan Edward Haskins of Chatham; two brothers, Willard S. Hoskins and Windell G. Hoskins, both of Chatham; four sisters, Mary H. Hedrick of Chatham, Louise H. Davis of Chatham, Doris H. Jones of Leesville and Betty H. Adkins of Gretna; five stepsisters, Faye Tosh of Danville, Christine Tosh, Paulene Tosh, Carlene Tosh and Linda Tosh, all of Danville; one stepbrother, Bill Tosh of Danville; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Scott Funeral Home with the Rev. George W. Knight officiating. Burial will be in the Hoskins Family cemetery.

Betty Sue Wyatt Law
CHATHAM, Va. - Betty Sue Wyatt Law, 60, of 3272 Climax Road, died Saturday, May 29, 1999, at her residence.
Born June 20, 1938, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Ocie Anderson Wyatt and Mary Elizabeth Dalton Wyatt.
Mrs. Law was a member of Greenpond Baptist Church where she was a former member of the choir. She was a retired teacher's aid at Climax Elementary School.
She is survived by her husband, Tommy Law of the residence; one son David Law of San Francisco, Calif.; two daughters, Sabrina Gentry of Roxboro, N.C. and Kim Lewis of Chatham; one brother, Ronney Wyatt of Gretna; and four grandchildren, Trey Gentry, Hallie Sue Gentry, Jacob Lewis and Karley Lewis.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, May 31, 1999, at Greenpond Baptist Church with the Rev. John McCray and the Rev. R.G. Rowland officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

HALIFAX, Va. - Janice Boyd Moderelli, 59, of 1186 Salishan Drive, died Friday, May 28, 1999, at Halifax Regional Medical Hospital.
Born Sept. 24, 1939, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Harvey Bruce Boyd and Lottie Hite Boyd, who survives. She was married
to James A. "Jim" Moderelli, who survives. She was a retired fraud inspector with the Department of Social Services. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church and past chairman of Halifax County Salvation Army.
In addition to her husband of the residence and her mother of South Boston, survivors include one daughter, Sherry P. Martin of South Boston; one son, John L. Puryear Jr. of New Bern, N.C.; three brothers, Marshall Bruce Boyd of Kingsland, Ga., Ray Carson Boyd of Halifax and Horace S. Boyd of New Rochelle, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one grandchild.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Brooks Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Randolph Hite officiating. Burial will be in Grace Baptist cemetery, Virgilina.

Wendell Holmes Oliver
DANVILLE, Va. - Wendell Holmes Oliver, 70, of 345 Virginia Ave, died Saturday, May 29, 1999, at his residence.
He was born Oct 9, 1928, in Danville, the son of Malcolm E. Oliver Sr. and Eloise Edwards Oliver.
Mr. Oliver attended the University of Virginia and was a Korean War veteran, serving in the United States Navy. He was retired from the Finance Department for the City of Danville, where he had worked for many years. Mr. Oliver had previously worked in the office for Dibrell Bros. Inc. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Danville. He is survived by three nephews, Malcolm E. Oliver III of Nederland, Colo., Ben Oliver of Boulder, Colo. and Edward M. Oliver of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; and a sister-in-law, Marion Marshal "Dickie" Hooper of Nokomis, Fla.
Mr. Oliver was predeceased by a brother Malcolm E. Oliver Jr.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, May 31, 1999, at Highland Burial Park.
