Gracie Younger
DANVILLE, Va. - Gracie Anderson Younger, 57, of 159 Lynndale Drive, died Friday night, May 28, 1999, in Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Born March 18, 1942 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Walter Anderson and Florence Carter Anderson.
Prior to her retirement on disability, she was employed as a private duty nurse's aid. She was a member of White Oak Missionary Baptist Church in Dry Fork.
Survivors include her husband Albert Younger of the residence; two sons, Thurman Younger and Sherman Younger, both of Danville; two sisters, Lacie Chilson and Macie Culbreath, both of Jersey City, N.J.; three brothers: Penior Anderson of Ringgold, Andrew Anderson of Danville and Wade Anderson of Newark, N.J.; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday from the Chapel of Miller Funeral Home in Gretna by the Rev. E.L. Pope. Burial will follow in the Fairview Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Alan Grey Davis
NATHALIE, Va. - Alan Grey Davis, 45, of 2172 Bull Creek Road, died Monday morning, May 31, 1999, at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
He was the fiance of Linda Tuck Rutledge of Red Oak and her children, David, Shannon, Brandon and Brandy.
Mr. Davis was born in Halifax County January 26, 1945, the son of Arnita Bomar Davis of Nathalie and the late Ernie M. Davis Jr.
He was a member of Clover Bottom Baptist Church and a manager of Harris-Teeter in Danville.
He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Anthony and Julie Davis, and Alex Davis, all of Nathalie; a grandson, Dustin Davis of Nathalie; five brothers, Ernie Davis of Gladys, Ted Davis of Monroe, Mitchell Davis of Pamplin, Billy Davis and Don Davis, both of Nathalie; five sister, Patricia Fisher, Raye Davis, Pam Rudder, Debbie Owen and Sally Ray, all of Nathalie; and 24 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Eddie Ray.
A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 2, 1999, at Clover Bottom Baptist Church by the Rev. James Crocker and the Rev. Ed Griffin. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Henderson Funeral Home and will be at the residence at other times.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
George McBride
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - George "Mr. Mac" McBride, 79, died Sunday evening, May 30, 1999, at Martinsville Rehabilitation Center, where he resided for the past three years.
Mr. McBride was born in Eden, N.C., on December 16, 1919, a son of the late Nelson McBride and Ella Bibee McBride.
Mr. McBride was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
He was well-known among the golfers of the Danville area, and was the manager of the Ringgold Golf Club until his health failed. After his retirement, a golf tournament was held by the Ringgold Golf Club each year to honor him in the Mr. Mac Golf Tournament with the proceeds going to Junior Golf of Danville.
He was a member of the Tabernacle.
He was the last surviving member of his generation of the family.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Beanie McBride of Danville; two grandchildren, April Fulcher and Chris McBride both of Danville; and great-granddaughter, Macenzie Fulcher of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Robert J. Barber Jr., with interment to follow at Woodlawn cemetery in the Leaksville section of Eden, North Carolina.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of his son, Gary McBride, 128 Allison Drive.

Louise Cuningham
ROANOKE, Va. - Louise Connolly Cuningham, formerly from the Danville area, died Monday, May 31, 1999.
She was one of the last surviving members of the true Daughters of Confederacy and was retired from the federal government.
She was the widow of William Murray Cuningham and is survived by her niece, Ann C. Kefer, Roanoke; her nephew, Linney Lee Connoly Jr. and his wife, Marcia of Elkins, W.Va.; three great-nieces, and one great-nephew.
Graveside services will be held in the Cedars cemetery in Milton, N.C., on Thursday, June 3, 1999 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Deborah H. Hunley officiating.
Friends may call at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel after 1 p.m. today. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.
Roland Hutson
DANVILLE, Va. - Roland Lee Hutson, age 64, died Monday, May 31, 1999 at Duke University after five years of declining health.
Born Mar. 6, 1935, he was retired from Joe Land Trucking Co. in Lexington, N.C.
He is survived by one son, Timothy Hutson of Danville; one sister, Eva Triplette of Danville; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Rebecca Neeves Hutson.
Services will be held 6 p.m. Thursday at the home of his son, 1601 Franklin Turnpike.
The family will receive friends at that residence as well.

George McBride

Rufus Simon Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Rufus W. Simon Sr., 86, of 1891 Halifax Road, died Saturday, May 29, 1999, at Bradford Oaks Nursing, Clinton, Md.
Born Nov. 10, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Isaiah Simon and Lizzie Johns Simon.
He was married
to Minnie Williams Simon.
He retired from First National Bank and was a member of East New Hope Baptist Church. He also worked with Waddell Printing Co.
Survivors include four sons Rufus W. Simon, Jr. of Washington, Marvin R. Simon and Ralph E. Simon, both of Temple Hill, Md., and Vincent D. Simon of Bowie, Md.; two daughters Barbara S. Inge of San Diego, and Joyce S. Hammond of Fort Washington, Md.; five sisters Florine Womack, Hazel Logan, Mildred DeShazor amd Louise Garland, all of Danville, and Lillian Garland of New York; 10 grandchidren and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be noon Thursday at East New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Marcellus Mack officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Garden.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Mattie Hampton
CASCADE, Va. - Mattie B. Hampton, 66, of 440 Gerlene Lane, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999.
She was born in Rockingham County.
She was married
to Artie Hampton, who survives.
She was a member of Star of Bethlehem Way Of the Cross Church.
In addition to her husband, survivors include five sons Calvin Blackstock, Otis Hampton, both of Cascade, Artie Hampton Jr. and Maurice Hampton, both of Axton, George Hampton of Eden, N.C.; two daughters Norma Jean Hairston of Axton, and Dorothy Broadnax of Cascade.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Star Of Bethlehem Way Of The Cross Church in Cascade. Burial will be in church cemetery.

Ruth Holley
DANVILLE, Va. - Ruth Davis Holley, 86, of 467 Piney Forest Road, died early Wednesday morning, June 2, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after five years of declining health.
Mrs. Holley was born in the Witt community of Pittsylvania County on March 23, 1913, a daughter of the late Rawley Lee Davis and Mary Abbott Davis.
Mrs. Holley married
Howard Durend Holley on December 20, 1933, who predeceased her on October 5, 1994.
Mrs. Holley had made her home in Danville all of her life, she was a homemaker and worked for nearly eight years at Dan River Inc. in her earlier years.
She was of the Methodist faith, a member of the former Piney Forest United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Holley was predeceased by a granddaughter, Ellen Williams, and also predeceased by two brothers, James Davis and Thomas Davis.
Survivors include one daughter, Louise Holley Williams of Danville, and two sons Durend Neal Holley of the residence and L. Wayne Holley Sr., of Danville; and three sisters Gladys Davis Astin, Sallie Davis Powell and Annie Davis Holley, all of Danville; two brothers Jack Davis and Alonza Davis, both of Danville and two grandchildren, Wayne Holley Jr. and Brandy Holley, both of Danville and one great-grandchild Landon Holley.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ronald W. Mateer and Mr. Paul Heffinger. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m., and at other times at the residence.
