Jerry Gammon

DANVILLE, Va. - Jerry Wayne Gammon Sr., 54, of 40 Sanford Road, died Friday afternoon, June 4, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after one month of declining health.

Born Oct. 11, 1944, in Danville, he was the son of Paul Edward Gammon and Ruth White Gammon.

He spent most of his life in the Danville area, where he was a painter for Quality Construction. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of the React Team for seven years.

He was predeceased by two infant children.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Wayne Gammon Jr. of Norfolk and James Edward Gammon of Danville; four brothers, Neal Gammon of Blairs, William "Billy" Gammon of Tampa, Fla., Darrell Gammon and David Gammon both of Pelham, N.C.; and three sisters, Nancy Ann Terry of Leasburg, N.C., Bettie Marie Nichols of Tunstall and Wanda K. Brewer of Danville.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. today at the Gammon family cemetery on Meadowview Road with the Rev. Johnny Jones officiating.

The family will be at the residence of his sister, Bettie Nichols, at 180 Sharon Lane in Tunstall.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mattie Pryor

DANVILLE, Va. - Mattie Raney Pryor, 87, of 222 Courtland St., died Saturday morning, June 5, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center after three years of declining health and a two-month stay at the nursing home.

Born in Grenada, Miss., on June 1, 1912, she was the daughter of Willie Earl Raney and Pearl Webb Raney.

Her husband, Harvey Pryor, died July 8, 1968.

She was also predeceased by a son, Bobby Pryor; and a daughter, Margie Pryor Phelps.

She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was a homemaker and a member of Westover Drive Church of God.

Survivors include two sons, Willie Lee Prior of Danville and Steve P. Pryor of Dry Fork; one daughter, Frances Pryor Arnold of Danville; one sister, Barbara Raney of Danville; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Barnes and the Rev. D. Griffin Duncan officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will be at the residence of her son, Willie Lee Prior at 170 Mimosa St.

Allen Pugh

DANVILLE, Va. - W. Allen Pugh, 71, of 178 Cumberland Drive, died Saturday, June 5, 1999, at his residence after a decline in health since March.

Born Aug. 16, 1927, in Danville, he was the son of the late Arch S. Pugh and Marsella Huff Pugh.

He was married to Edna Chilton Pugh, who survives.

He was predeceased by a son, Andrew Scott Pugh. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II.

He spent most of his life in Danville where he worked for Dan River Inc. as an over-the-road driver before retiring in 1989. He attended Full Gospel Fellowship Church.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Walter A. Pugh Jr. of Danville and James S. Pugh of Tillery, N.C.; one daughter, Susie P. Dixon of Danville; one brother, Frederick B. Pugh of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and four sisters, Alma P. Nance of Nashville, Tenn., Virginia P. Yeatts, Bobbie P. East and Frances P. Cooper, all of Danville; and six grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Roger L. Ewing officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Inez Wilson

DANVILLE, Va. - Inez Marguerite English Wilson, 75, of 149 Executive Court, Abingdon Place, died Friday, June 4, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after nine months of declining health.

Born June 1, 1924, in Campbell County, she was the daughter of George Pierce English and Nolia Malvella Law English.

She was married Feb. 14, 1953, to Seward Johnson Wilson Jr., who survives.

She worked for a short time with the government in Washington, D.C. and in 1947 moved to the Danville area where she was employed at Brown's Jewelry and was also employed with Clement and Wheatley as a legal secretary. She went to work at Danville Vault Corp. in 1957 as secretary and bookkeeper and in 1968, she became business manager for Danville Vault Co., Russell's Paint Center, and Hi and Dri Storage prior to her retirement in 1998. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and the Bridgettes Bridge Club. She graduated from Altavista High School in 1941, and was a graduate of Lynchburg Business College.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Marguerite Veniece Burlage of Virginia Beach; one son, S.J. Wilson III of Jacksonville, N.C.; two sisters, Juanita Frances English Willis and Annette English McQuinn, both of Danville; three brothers, Wendell Blair English of Danville, Roland DeLafayette English of Newport News,

and Harold Thomas English of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and one grandchild.

She was predeceased by one brother, George Pierce English Jr. and one sister, Claudette English.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will be at the residence.

Steve Garber

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Steve Russell Garber, 41, of 1068 Propst Trail, died Friday, June 11, 1999 at Bristol, Va.

Born Oct. 29, 1957, in Halifax County, he was a son of Bobby Ray Garber and Vivian C. Garber.

He was married to Jacqueline Talbott Garber, who survives. He was a member of Beth Car Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include, two sons, Dax T. Garber and Dylan Russell Garber, both of South Boston; three daughters, Loren Brooke Garber, Leyla Brooke Garber and Stacy Rena Garber, all of South Boston; one brother, Jeffrey Dale Garber of Nathalie; and one sister, Phyliss G. Epps of Halifax.

The funeral will be held Monday, June 14, at Powell Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Jim Smith. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. At other times, the family will receive friends at the home, 1068 Propst Trail.

Polly Gatewood

DANVILLE, Va. - Polly Ann Gatewood, 81, 220 Sylvan Road, died Wednesday, June 9, 1999, at her residence.

Born Jan. 15, 1918, in Chatham, she was a daughter of Dave Thompson and Easter Jennings Thompson.

She was married to William H. Gatewood, who predeceased her.

She was employed by Dan River Inc. prior to her retirement.

Survivors include one daughter, Sally Royal of Danville; one sister, Jeania Mae Lipford of Reidsville, N.C.; two brothers, Randolph Thompson of Spring Garden and Robert Thompson of Washington, D.C.

Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, June 14, 1999 from Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, 257 Iris Lane, Lot 27.

Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dan Henderson

DANVILLE, Va. - Dan Huff Henderson, of 119 College Avenue died Friday morning, June 11, 1999, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.

He was born on November 21, 1913, in Columbus, Ga., a son of I.L. Henderson and Mamie Lou Huff Henderson.

Mr. Henderson was married to Helen Brimmer Henderson on October 21, 1940, who survives, of the home.

He was a graduate of Georgia Tech and was associated with Dan River Mills for a number of years.

He was a charter member of Glen Oak Country Club, was active with Boy Scouts, and other civic organizations.

Mr. Henderson was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.

He was predeceased by a son, Joseph Marvin Henderson.

In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by a daughter, Helen Henderson White and her husband, Matthew T. White Jr. of Richmond, Va., a son Dan H. Henderson Jr. of Lilburn, Ga., a sister, Lulie H. Anderson of San Luis Obispo, Calif., and four granddaughters, Ginger White, Jeanne White, Julie Henderson, and Becky Henderson.

Private graveside services will be held Sunday at Green Hill cemetery by the Rev. Jay Ashby.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and the family will be at the residence, 119 College Avenue.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Danville Life Saving Crew.

Margaret Houghton

DANVILLE, Va - Margaret Clay Houghton, 84, formerly of 263 Linden Drive, died Friday, June 11, 1999, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born Dec. 2, 1914, in Scottsville, Va., she was the daughter of William Clifton Clay and Lottie Hill Clay.

She was married Oct. 26, 1932, to Stanley Baylor Houghton Jr., who predeceased her Jan. 19, 1988.

She was a graduate of Averett College. She was a charter member of the West Main Baptist Church, where she was active in Sunday school and the Women's Missionary Union.

Survivors include, one son Stanley B. Houghton III, of Danville; one daughter, Margaret H. Howell of Richmond, Va.; two sisters, Virginia Clay Daugherty of Laurens, S.C., and Jacqueline Clay Pennell of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two brothers, David Sager Clay of Salisbury, N.C., and Richard Thornton Clay of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren and two-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 4 p.m. today at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Bruce Wilson officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her son, Stanley B. Houghton III, 3655 Hwy. 29 North.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lydia Olsen

DANVILLE, Va. - Lydia Krumboldt Olsen, 92, of 2225 Ridge Road, died Saturday, June 12, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 27, 1907, in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of Thomas A. Krumboldt and Anna Bailey Krumboldt.

She was a legal secretary for many years at Needleson's Attorney-at-Law in Fayetteville, N.Y.

She was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church where was a member of the Circle No. 1.

On Oct. 19, 1939, she was married to Stanley Andrew Olsen, who survives.

In addition to her husband, survivors include one son, Norman Stanley Olsen of Seneca, S.C.; and one grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted Monday, June 14 at 8 p.m. at Barker Funeral Home by the Rev. Tommy Deel. Burial will be in Arlington cemetery, Philadelphia, June 16.

The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Monday at Barker Funeral Home. At other times, the family will receive friends at the residence, 2225 Ridge Road.

Collins Pollok

DANVILLE, Va. - Collins White Pollok, 84, of 133 Grove Park Circle, died Friday, June 11, 1999, at Abingdon Place of Danville, where he was a resident since July 1998.

Born Nov. 20, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Ferdinand Lanier Pollok and Virginia Blanch Collins Pollok.

He was married to Elizabeth Stephens Pollok, who predeceased him May 15, 1998.

He was associated with Peoples Life Insurance Company for 25 years, then operated Henderson, Harvey, Pollok General Insurance until 1976. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Navy. He was a member of the Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge No. 122, the Danville Scottish Rite and a member and past-president of the Danville Shrine Club. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and was an active member of the Garnett Norton Fellowship Sunday School Class.

Survivors include two brothers, Harry Pollok and Harold Pollok, both of Dry Fork; four sisters, Agnes Mitchell and Elsie Harper, both of Danville, Virgie Clark of Charlottesville and Annie Hemmings of Abingdon.

He was predeceased by a sister, Sally Pollok and seven brothers, George Pollok, Ferd Pollok, James Pollok, Irving Pollok, Robert Pollok, William Pollok and Julian Pollok.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday from Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Joey Faucette and the Rev. William Hughes Pollok. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of his sister, Agnes Mitchell, 101 Marshall Terrace and at the home of Harry and Harold Pollok, 3137 Whitmell School Road.

Percy Street

DANVILLE, Va. - Percy Street, 82, of 2593 Kentuck Road, died Thursday, June 10, 1999, at his home.

Born June 2, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Cliff Street and Rebecca Bagett Street.

He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

He was employed by Export Tobacco Co. and he also worked as a farmer.

He was married to Ethel B. Street, who survives.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Thelma Colbert of Atlanta, Ruth Hardy of Woodbridge and Elsie Street of Washington, D.C.; three sons, Percy Street Jr. of Fort Washington, Md., Willie Street of Capitol Heights, Md. and James Street of Hyattsville, Md.; two sisters, Rebecca Street of Washington and Nannie Pressley of Suitland, Md.; 24 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, June 14, from Bethel Baptist Church by the Rev. Thomas Johnson Sr. Interment icon will be in the church cemetery.

The remains maybe viewed Sunday afternoon at L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the residence, 2593 Kentuck Road.

Jack White

CHATHAM, Va. - Elder Jack White, 75, of 120 Clement St., died Friday, June 11, 1999, at his residence.

Born March 24, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Eliza Rebecca White.

He was married to Annie Laura Allen White, who predeceased him.

He was the pastor of Green Rock Pentecostal Faith Church. He was a veteran of World War II and was a self-employed brick mason.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Johnny White and Herbert White.

Survivors include three sons, Michael White of Chatham, Jack White Jr. of Danville and Obediah White of New Jersey; two daughters, Ruth W. Conner of Richmond and Rebecca White of Danville; four brothers, Obie White and Marion White, both of Chatham, Willie White of New Jersey and Wilson White of Danville; two sisters, Isabell Robertson of Chatham and Rosa White of Danville; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

The funeral will be conducted Monday, June 14, at 1 p.m. from Green Rock Pentecostal Faith Church by Bishop Joseph Heyward. Interment icon will be in New Jerasulem Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 120 Clement St.

Howerton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
