H. "Bernie" Gregory Jr.
HAMPTON, Va. - H. Bernard "Bernie" Gregory Jr., 55, died Tuesday, June 29, 1999.
A native of Callands, he had been a Hampton resident since 1961.
For the past 30 years, he worked as the Director of Operations and Maintenance for t he Hampton Redevelopment and Housing Authority and was a recipient of the Buzz Meadows Memorial Award. He was an avid golfer and fisherman.
Survivors include his wife, Rita Diane Gregory; a daughter and son-in-law, Deana G. and Tracy W. Renn of Hampton; his mother and father, Janie ahd Hassell Gregory of Callands; his sister and brother-in-law, Jill and Harrison Bowman of Danville; his granddaughters, Kayla and Shelby; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Myrtle and Dave Watts of Hampton.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, in the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Linkous Jr. officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Raleigh Martin
BLAIRS, Va. - Raleigh E. Martin, 94, of 9180 U.S. 29, formerly of 35 Baltimore Ave., Danville, died Tuesday, June 29, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after one year of declining health.
Born Sept. 14, 1904, in Patrick County, he was the son of Jim Lewis Martin and Ida Belle Nowlin Martin.
He was married
to Bertie Mae Hundley Martin who predeceased him Dec. 23, 1993.
He spent most of his life in Danville where he worked at Dan River Inc., in the spinning room for 45 years before retiring in 1961. He was a member of the Full Gospel Revival Chapel.
Survivors include two daughters, Ruth Martin of Chatham, and Bettie Jennings of Blairs; four sons, Irvin Martin of Colorado Springs, Colo., Bernice Martin of Richmond, Richard Martin of Danville and Douglas Martin of Greensboro, N.C.; and nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park with the Pastor Edd Komorowski officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his granddaughter, Ruth Caswell, 9180 U.S. 29, Blairs.

Donna Mitchell
KEELING, Va. - Donna Wallace Mitchell, 49, of Keeling Drive, died suddenly Tuesday, June 29, 1999, at her residence.
Born June 12, 1950, in Danville, she was the daughter of Willie Jim Wallace and Cordelia Talbott Wallace.
She was married
to Danny Wayne Mitchell, who survives.
She lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville, where she was a homemaker. She was a 1968, graduate of Dan River High School. She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her mother of Danville, and her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Timothy Scott Barksdale of Ringgold and James Edward Barksdale of Callands; two brothers, Dennis Wayne Wallace of Raleigh, N.C., and H. Steven Wallace of Fieldale; and four grandchildren.
She was prececeased by one brother, Michael Lee Wallace.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. H. Dale Proctor officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the chapel and at other times at the residence of her mother, Cordelia T. Wallace, 1165 Franklin Turnpike.
Elizabeth Thompson
DANVILLE, Va. - Elizabeth Mattox Thompson, 80, of 210 Rosemary Lane, died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, after a one-week stay at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 2, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Harry Mattox and Fannie Compton Mattox.
She was married
in 1947 to Roy Hammond Thompson, who survives.
She attended Radford and Stratford colleges and had spent most of her life in the Danville area. She was a retired school teacher, teaching in the Pittsylvania County and Danville school systems. She was a member of the Ascension Lutheran Church and the DAV Auxilliary where she ws a past officer.
She was predeceased by a brother, Harry Mattox Jr.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sisters, Helen Talbott of Danville and Patsy Bolling of Gretna.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Ascension Lutheran Church with the Rev. Caldwell Day officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Marvin Carter
DANVILLE, Va. - Marvin Carter, 36, of 1229 Aspen St., died Tuesday, June 29, 1999, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born June 8, 1963, in Danville, he was the son of Marvin Carter Jr. and Marian Thomas Carter, who survive.
He was a graduate of Dan River High School.
In addition to his parents of Danville, survivors include his step-mother, Delores Carter of Danville; one daughter, Sheneque Henry of Danville; one son, Dominque Richardson of South Boston; two sisters, Sheila Stephens and Jennifer Carter, both of Danville; two brothers, Darnell Carter and Lionel Carter, both of Danville.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Stewart officiating. Interment
will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

Eva Daniel
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Eva Elizabeth Daniel, 81, 5009 Bill Tuck Hwy., died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born June 19, 1918, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Joseph Albert Daniel and Bertha Lee Griffin Daniel.
She was a member of Mount Cana United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two brothers, Dorsey Lee Daniel and Martin F. Daniel, both of South Boston.
She was predeceased by one brother, Harry Wilson Daniel; and one sister, Ruby D. Arrington.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Grace Baptist Church cemetery.
Deacon William Dennis
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Deacon William Booker Dennis, 85, of 116 Rosehill Drive, Apt. 4, died Friday, June 25, 1999, at his residence.
Born April 1, 1935, in Halifax County.
Survivors include one daughter, Louise Payne of Brookneal; two sons, William Dennis of Waldorf, Md., and John Dennis of Washington; one sister, Maria Canada of Brookneal; one brother, James Clark of Brookneal; two grandchildren and two great-granchildren.
A funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Murphy Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Herman Robertson officiating. Interment
will be in church cemetery.

Edna Oakes
RINGGOLD, Va. - Edna Mayhew Oakes of the Kentuck community of Ringgold, Virginia died June 28, 1999.
She was the widow of John Averett Oakes and is survived by her son, T. Wayne Oakes, Virginia Water, Surrey, England; her daughter, Kaye Oakes Hickey, Richmond, Virginia; and four grandchildren, Elizabeth Keller Oakes, Buies Creek, North Carolina; John Averett Oakes II, Denver, Colorado, James Charles Hickey III, Sperryville, Virginia, and Timothy Daniel Hickey, St. Louis, Misssouri.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 3, at 11:00 a.m. in the mausoleum of Danville Memorial Gardens.
The service will be conducted by The Reverend David Henry.
The family will receive visitors from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. on Friday evening, July 2nd, at the home of T. Wayne Oakes, 388 Hawthorne Drive, Danville.
The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Organ Fund of Kentuck Baptist Church, 185 Kentuck Church Road, Ringgold, Virginia 24586.

Wilford Pillow
PITTSVILLE, Va. - Wilford Wade Pillow, 61, of 4548 Pittsville Road, died Thursday, July 1, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 4, 1937, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Claude Wilford Pillow and Flonnie Wade Lumpkin Pillow.
He was married
to Docia Pritchett Pillow, who survives.
He was a custodian with the Pittsylvania County Schools. He was a former member of the Army reserves and of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, David Wade Pillow of Danville and Irvin Lee Pillow of Java; two daughters, Lisa Eanes of Pittsville and Melissa Blackard of Semora, N.C.; four brothers, Conley Ray Pillow of Danville, Algie Pillow and Ben Pillow, both of Chatham, and Raleigh Pillow of Blairs; two sisters, Callie Russelll and Carrie Kregor, both of Danville; and seven grandchildren.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Colbert-Moran Chapel with the Rev. Charles Scott officiating. Burial will be in Gretna Burial Park.
