DANVILLE, Va. - Odessa Ruth Davis, 89, formerly of Guilford Street, died Sunday, July 18, 1999, after 15 years in Roman Eagle Memorial Home of several years of declining health.
Born Aug. 6, 1909, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of Willie Lee David and Mollie Bet Ferguson David.
She was married
Dec. 10, 1927, to Rube Fed Davis, who predeceased her Sept. 23, 1990.
She moved to Danville in 1948, where she was a homemaker. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Sheryl D. Farrar of Lynchburg; and three grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one daughter, Jean D. Blair in March
1999, six brothers and one sister.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Levi Stroud Jr. officiating.
Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Woodson Jones
DANVILLE, Va. - Woodson "Eddie" Jones, 75, of 1108 N. Main St., died Sunday, July 18, 1999, at his residence after five years of declining health.
Born Sept. 28, 1923 in Berea, Ky., he was the son of Barney Jones and Margaret Gadd Cook.
He was married
to Mamie Dinkle Jones, who survives.
He lived most of his life in Danville and worked as a machinist for Cahill Manufacturing. He was of the Holiness faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by one daughter, Jennifer Chumley of Chatham; three brothers, Edmond Jones and Jake Jones, both of Dayton, Ohio, and Floyd Jones of Atlanta; one sister, Cordelia Jones of Dayton, Ohio; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rick Withrow officiating. A private interment will be held at a later date.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Elnora Kates
DANVILLE, Va. - Elnora Gravett Kates, 87, of 1125 Adams St., died Friday, July 16, 1999, at Piney Forest Nursing Home.
Born July 6, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William Gravett and Dora Motley Gravett.
She was married
to Henry Edwards Kates.
She was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, served as an usher, missionary worker and sang in the choir.
Survivors include one sister, Charlotte School of Troy, N.Y.; and one niece, Lucille Beck of Danville.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Olive Baptist Church with the Rev. London Walker officiating. Burial will be in Foral Hills Memory Gardens.
A viewing will be 2-8 p.m. today at L.H. Brooks and Bros. Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Ruth Neal
HALIFAX, Va. - Ruth Kent Satterfield Henderson Neal of 463 Buena Vista Drive, died Sunday, July 18, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born in Halifax County, Va. on February 2, 1923. She was 76 years old.
She was the daughter of Mr. George Carr Satterfield and Mrs. Harriett Emma Chaney Satterfield Riddle and was married
first to Marion E. (Mac) Henderson and then to J. Bradley Neal.
Following the death of her husband, M.E. Henderson, Mrs. Neal devoted her life to her Church and Women's Club where she was elevated to Alice Kyle District President for Women's Clubs.
Later she was elected chairman of the Democratic Party for Halifax County. Following the election she was elected to the Halifax County Board of Supervisor's, being the first female elected to the Board.
She served three terms as Vice Chairman on many committees, namely Chairman of Legislative, Transition Committee (South Boston reverting to a town), and Chairman of Halifax County Social Services Board.
She was a member of the Board for Lake Country Area Commission on Aging, Southside Commission, Halifax Community Action, also serving on two of its Boards, Credit Union for Halifax County and Chairman of Head Start.
She represented the Board on the Continuing Education of Longwood College, serving as Chairman of the Advisory Committee.
She also served on several committes for VACO, Legislative, Resolutions, Health and Services and Nominations. She received a commission to the Health Coordinating Council for the State of Virginia, being appointed by Governor Charles Robb. Also VACO nominated her to the State Fire Services Board and she was give a commission to that Board by Governor Douglas Wilder.
Mrs. Ruth Henderson Neal was appointed to the Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Plantation Board in 1980 and was Chariman of the Personnel Committee. She retired from Virginia Power in 1988 where she worked for 36 years. She also retired from the Halifax County Board of Supervisors in 1995 after 10 years of service.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of South Boston where she served as President of Women of the Church, taught Sunday School, and served two terms as chairman of the Diaconate.
She married
J. Bradley Neal in June of 1989, and following his death she devoted her life to helping the less fortunate in many ways on various committees.
She was a graduate of Wilson Memorial High School, and was a Secretarial School graduate of Jefferson School of Commerce College of Charlottesville, Va.
Mrs. Ruth Kent Satterfield Henderson Neal is survived by two sons, Marion E. Henderson Jr. of Chesapeake and William Morton Henderson II of San Antonio, Texas; five granddaughters, Ruth H. Cox of Disputana, Va., Stacey H. Mitchell of Midlothian, Va., Beth H. Manning of College Station, Texas, Kimberly H. Johnston of Dallas, Amy E. Henderson of San Antonio; and three great-granddaughters.
Memorial service will be held Wednesday, at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, South Boston, with the Rev. Dr. Russell Lee conducting the service.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home today from 7-8:30 p.m. and at other times at her home, 463 Buena Vista Drive, Halifax.

Annabelle Tatum
DANVILLE, Va. - Annabelle James Tatum, 91, of 623 Mowbray Arch, died Sunday, July 18, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Mrs. Tatum was born on March 28, 1908, in Coalport, Pa., the daughter of Harry Boone and Agnes Giles Boone.
She is survived by two daughters, Carol Reynolds of Danville and Alice Zaher of Kent, Ohio; one son, Burke James Jr. of Akron, Ohio; eight grandchildren, three of which are local, Jill Reynolds Jenkins of Greensboro, N.C., Robert J. Reynolds Jr. of Leesurg, N.C., Hyko Lake and Daniel B. Reynolds of Greensboro, N.C.; and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted in Akron, Ohio, by Hummel Funeral Home. Interment
will be at Hillside cemetery.

LeRoy Walter
RINGGOLD, Va. - LeRoy Walter, 71, of 1024 Barber Road, died Monday, July 19, 1999, after five weeks at Roman Eagle Memorial Home and six years of declining health.
Born Nov. 28, 1927, in Belton, Mo., he was the son of Adolph Walter and Leona Walter.
He first married
Dela Foster who predeceased him, and later married
Jo Ann Walter, Jan. 17, 1987, who survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Army and the United States Coast Guard. He spent most of his life in Missouri, residing in Danville for the past nine years. He was a warehouse manager for Champion International Company prior to retirement. He was a member of The Tabernacle and a member of Rising Star Masonic Lodge in Missouri.
In addition to his wife of Ringgold, survivors include one daughter, Rebecca W. Tucker of Phoenix, Ariz.; one stepdaughter, Teresa Compton Pyron of Ringgold; one sister, Katherine W. Headley of Kansas City, Mo.; one brother, Eugene Walter of Kansas City, Mo.; two grandchildren and 1 stepgrandchild.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Melvin Walter, Charles Walter and Junior Walter.
A funeral will be 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Lamarr Mooneyham officiating and with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post No. 325 and masonic rites conducted by Ramah Masonic Lodge No. 70.
Burial will be in Forest Hill cemetery, Kansas City, Mo.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel and at other times at the residence.

Richard Monks
KEELING, Va. - Richard Calloway Monks, 75, of 800 Oak Grove Road, (state highway 713) died Monday, July 19, 1999, at his residence after three years of declining health.
Born Sept. 8, 1923, in Weymouth, Mass., he was the son of George S. Monks and Inez Calloway Monks.
He was married
July 21, 1971, to Ida Bell Parker Monks, who survives.
He served with the United States Army in Europe during World War II.
He moved to the Keeling community of Pittsylvania County in 1988 from Goffstown, N.H. He retired from Irwin Skectel Company, where he worked as a food broker. He was of the Catholic faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two stepdaughters, Peggy Payton of Birmingham, Ala., and Jane Hall of Edgewater, Fla.,; one stepson, Leon Hall of Marnia, Calif.; two brothers, William Monks of Plymouth, Mass., and Robert Monks of Kingston, Mass.; two sisters, Virginia M. Petrell of Fort Pierce, Fla. and Shirley M. Werner of Manchester, N.H.; six stepgrandchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, George Monks Jr.; and one sister, Doris Monks.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Tom Erwin officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post 1097 Honor Guard.

William Tillias Jr.
ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - William P. Tillias Jr., 60, formerly of Danville, Va., died Saturday, July 17, 1999, at his residence.
He was the son of William and Blanche S. Tillias, who survive.
He was married
to Ampie Tillias, who survives.
In addition to his parents of Tarpon Springs, Fla., and wife of the residence, survivors include his aunt, Arlene S. Scearcey of Danville, Va.
A funeral was held Tuesday, July 20, 1999, in Ormond Beach, Fla.
