DANVILLE, Va. - Earlene Stokes Jones, 76, of 698 Jefferson St., died Sunday, July 18, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 9, 1922, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Buloh Stokes and Carrie Hodnett Stokes.
She was married
to Willie Wilson Jones, who predeceased her.
Survivors include three daughters, Shirlene Jones, Carol Ann Inge, both of Danville, Debora Thompson of Burlington, N.C.; seven sons, Forest Jones, Wilson Jones Jr., Freddie Jones, Bobby Jones, Donald Jones, all of Danville; Walter Jones of Covington, Ga., and Roger Jones of Pelham, N.C.; two sisters, Mary Turner of Yanceyville, N.C., and Lucy Long of Danville.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Sassafras Grove Baptist Church in Providence, N.C., with the Rev. Carl Bigelow officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Sallie Ramsey
CHATHAM, Va. Sallie Ramsey, 88, of 641 Farragut St., and formerly of Chatham, Va., died Friday, July 16, 1999, at Provident Hospital in Washington.
Born Dec. 16, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Joe Henry Davis and Linda Craft Davis.
She was married
to Shirley Ramsey Sr., who predeceased her.
She was a retired nurse and a member of Vermount Avenue Baptist Church, Washington.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Ramsey Fitzgerald and Michele Ramsey, both of Washington; two sons, Joseph L. Ramsey and Shirley R. Ramsey Jr., both of Washington; 17 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great grandchildren.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Piney Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Isaac Monroe officiating. Burial will be in the Davis Family cemetery, Chatham.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Reginald Edwards, 2500 W. Gretna Road, Gretna, Va.

Frances Compton
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Frances Vaden Compton, 79, of 329 Chalmers St., died Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at her residence.
Born May 3, 1920, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Clarence T. Vaden and Vivian Wilborn Vaden.
She was married
to Rev. George Lee Compton.
She was a homemaker and a member of Centerville Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of South Boston, survivors include one brother, Henry Irvin Vaden of Baltimore.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Wingard officiating.
Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery.

Loyd Spires
CAMDEN, S.C. - Master Sgt. Loyd Columbus Spires, 68, died Wednesday, July 21, 1999.
Born Dec. 17, 1930, in Nashville, Ga., he was the son of Lorena Hemmings Spires, who survives, and Odell Spires.
He was married
to Mary Lester Spires, who also survive.
He was a United States Air Force Retiree.
He was a Korean veteran and also retired as a system analyst with the Department of Defense. He was a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church where he was active with the Honduras Mission and Habitat for Humanity.
In addition to his mother of Camden, and his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Diane S. Dade of Colonial Beach, Va., and Patricia S. Jordan of Kennesaw, Ga.; one sister, Betty Smyrl of Camden; two brothers, Earl Spires of Warner Robins, Ga., and Ray Spires of Powder Springs, Ga., two grandsons and one great-granddaughter.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethseda Presbyterian Church, in Camden, with the Rev. Dr. Chip Summers and the Rev. Jim Schaefer officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday in Halifax Memorial Gardens, South Boston, Va.

Harry Wheeler Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Harry Lee Wheeler Jr., 69, of 212 Banister Court, died Wednesday afternoon, July 21, 1999, at his residence.
He was born in Baltimore, Md., on November 20, 1929, a son of Harry L. Wheeler Sr. and Anna Trabert Wheeler.
Mr. Wheeler had been a resident of Danville since 1983, and was associated with the ARA Food Service for 30 years.
He was the director of food services with the Danville Regional Medical Center for 13 years until his retirement in 1996.
He was married
to the former Miss Mary Schoeberlein on April 11, 1953. In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by a daughter, Debra W. Watkins, and her husband, Robert, both of the home; a son, Mark T. Wheeler and his wife, Courtney, both of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren, Megan Watkins, Matthew Wheeler and Kyle Wheeler; a brother, William George Wheeler of Baltimore, Md.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Communion Lutheran Church, in Fallston, Md., with the Rev. Philip Kunder officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Faith Memorial Gardens.

Darcie Wright
CHATHAM, Va. - Darcie L. Wright, 33 of 193 White St., died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, in Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Born May 7, 1966, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Angeline Withcher, who survives.
She was married
to Ray A. Wright, who also survives.
She was a member of Cherrystone Baptist Church, and was a Teacher Assistant at Blairs Middle School.
In addition to her husband of the residence and her mother of Chatham, survivors include two sons, Ray Anthony Wright, II and Kobie Wade Wright, both of the residence; a brother, Stephen Witcher of Danville; three sisters, Grace L. Foster of Waynesboro, Penn., Bernadette Witcher of Chatham, and Sandra L. Jones of New York.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday from Cherrystone Baptist Church with the Rev. Floyd O. Jones officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

Richard Craig
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Richard Kenneth Craig, 61, of 651 Chatmoss Court, died Thursday, July 22, 1999, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
Born March 5, 1938, in Martinsville, he was the son of Richard Lee Craig and Ada Hollandsworth Craig.
He was married
to Patsy Jean Barbour Craig, of the residence.
He was an employee with E.I. DuPont Inc. for 28 years before retiring. He was a member of the National Guard. He was also a member of the Chatham Heights United Methodist Church where he was chairperson of the Pastor Parrish Committee and Cluster Representative of the church. He was a past volunteer for Memorial Hospital of Martinsville.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Richard "Rick" Kenneth Craig Jr. and John Thomas Craig, both of the residence; three brothers, Leonard L. Craig and Robert "Bobby" Eugene Craig, both of Martinsville, and Percy Hollandsworth Craig of Ridgeway.
He was predeceased by one brother, Curtis Lee Craig.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Chatham Heights United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael J. Derflinger officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

Owen Hankins
GRETNA, Va. - Owen B. Hankins, 71, of 316 Renan Road, died Thursday, July 22, 1999, at his residence.
Born May 30, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of William Robert Hankins and Bessie Minter Hankins Weaver.
He was married
to Sue Roach Hankins, who survives.
He was a farmer and a retired employee of Klopman.
He was a member of the Baptist Tabernacle.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son Robert O. Hankins of Motley; two daughters Starlette Henry of Gretna and Virginia S. Gibson of Pittsville; one half-brother Dan P. Hankins of Whitmell; two sisters Lois Pickeral of Rustburg and Rebecca Eanes of Chesapeake; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son Michael L. Hankins.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday of Colbert-Moran Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Ashworth, the Rev. Jimmy O. Henry and the Rev. Dr. John Ruef officiating.
Burial will be in Altavista Memorial Park.

Robert Jones
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert L. "Bobby" Jones, 55, of 713 Holland Road, died Thursday evening, July 22, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 9, 1944, in Danville, he was the son of the late Robert Lee Jones Sr. and Fannie Sue Harris Rice, who survives.
He was married
to Essie Matherly Jones, who survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Vietnam era. He spent most of his life in Danville where he worked for Dan River Inc. and later for Culp Mills, Burlington, N.C., before becoming disabled 11 years ago. He coached several men's and ladies softball teams and later became involved in auto racing in South Boston, in No. 8 car in the Super Stock Division. He was a member of Central Boulevard Church of God.
In addition to his mother of Providence, N.C., and wife of the residence, survivors include four sons, David Jones, Dwayne Meeks and I.C. Jones, all of Danville, and Michael Jones of the residence; three daughters, Tammy Mustain of Danville and Sherry Pullin of Keeling, and Tonya Oakes of Pelham, N.C.; one brother, James Jones of Danville; and six grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Robert L. Jones III and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Central Boulevard Church of God with the Rev. John H. Meadows officiating. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.

Clarence Ridgeway
DANVILLE, Va. - Clarence Aubrey Ridgeway, 88, of 134 Marshall Terrace, died Friday morning, July 23, 1999, at his residence after several weeks of declining health.
Born June 7, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Robert Ridgeway and Emma Ridgeway.
Survivors include two brothers, Raymond Bennett Ridgeway of Danville, Lacy Owen Ridgeway of Virginia Beach; one son, Clarence Aubrey Ridgeway Jr. of Keeling; two daughters, Margaret Anne Ridgeway of Danville and Nova Ridgeway Welch of Oak Island, N.C.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr., officiating.
Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Charletta Toler
DANVILLE, Va. - Charletta Ruth Toler, 70, died Thursday evening, July 22, 1999, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born August 4, 1928, in McDowell County, W.Va., he was the son of Amil William Toler and Glayds Virginia Jones Toler.
She was of the Baptist faith and lived most of her life in Danville.
She was disabled most of her adult life.
Survivors include one brother, John Toler of Lawrenceville, Va.; three sisters Nadine Lanum, Florence Allen and Marie Hardy, all of Danville.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Vermillion officiating.
Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
