Elizabeth Allen
DANVILLE, Va. - Elizabeth Harris Allen, 97, of 610 Mount Cross Road, died Saturday, July 24, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health of three months.
Born April 11, 1902, in Danville, she was the daughter of Walter J. Harris and Sarah Waller Harris.
She was married
to Holland Wood Allen, who died Oct. 10, 1977. A lifelong resident of Danville, she had lived on Mount Cross Road before moving to Riverside Health Care Center five years ago. She worked as a matron at the Danville City Jail for 25 years and was retired. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty A. Cox of Danville; a son, Harvey J. Allen of Palmer Springs; and two brothers, Frank C. Harris and Clyde Holland Harris of Danville; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. today at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Dr. Mark Harris officiating.
The family will be at the residence of her daughter, Betty A. Cox, at 610 Mount Cross Road, Apt. G-2. Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Sadie Booth
BROOKNEAL, Va. - Sadie Bell Seamster Booth, 75, died Saturday, July 24, 1999, at Guggenheimer Nursing Home in Lynchburg.
Born April 24, 1924, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Stephen Stone Seamster and Nannie Sue Clay Seamster.
She was married
to Charlie Booth. She was a member of Highland Heights Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Patsy Tharpe of Charlotte Court House and Barbara Williamson of Lynch Station; and three brothers, Jesse James Seamster of Victoria, John Henry Seamster of Rustburg and Stokely Owen Seamster of Gladys.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Mulberry Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Hubert Collins
BROSVILLE, Va. - Hubert Collins, 80, of 4492 Horseshoe Road, died Sunday, July 25, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after many years of declining health.
Born Dec. 6, 1918, in Harnett County, N.C., he was the son of Thomas J. Collins and Tillie Collins.
On July 19, 1941, he was married
to Irene Ferrell Collins, who predeceased him November 7, 1995.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He made his home in the Horseshoe Road community for over 40 years. He retired from Dan River Inc. in 1981, after 37 years of service. He was a member of Willis Memorial Baptist Church in Cascade.
Survivors include two sons, Kenneth M. Collins and Edward H. Collins, both of Danville; two daughters, Patsy C. Labiak of Virginia Beach and Barbara C. Tanner of Danville; one brother, Carlie Collins of Yanceyville, N.C.; five sisters, Ruby Davis and Mildred Coe, both of Sanford, N.C., Lema Lewter of Raleigh, N.C., and Josephine Clemons and Willie Harmon, both of Richmond; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by one sister, Virginia Heath.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Preston and Rev. Glenn Hudson officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Jesse Ferrell
CLOVER, Va. - Jesse Sam Ferrell, 80, of 1095 Middle Fork Trail, died Sunday, July 25, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Oct. 13, 1918, in Halifax County, he was the son of John Henry Ferrell and Hattie Ella Moorefield Ferrell.
He was married
to Elsie N. Ferrell, who survives.
He was a member and deacon at Rogers Chapel Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of Clover, survivors include two brothers, Billy H. Ferrell and Jerry O. Ferrell, both of Richmond; and four sisters, Virginia O. Ferrell of Richmond, Peggy F. Owen of Newport News, Doris F. Clayton of Fayetteville, N.C., and Sally F. Downey of Falls Church.
He was predeceased by one brother, James M. Ferrell.
A funeral will be held 12 p.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Douglas Spurlock and the Rev. Darrell Poole officiating. Burial will be in Roger Chapel Baptist Church cemetery.

Doye Washington Light
DANVILLE, Va. - Doye Washington Light, 78, of 1555 Halifax Road, died Sunday morning, July 25, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Aug. 12, 1920, in Floyd County, Va., he was the son of Otho E. Light and Effie Poff Light.
On Aug. 9, 1941, he was married
to Helen Groff Light, who survives.
He lived in the Glenwood community since 1961. He was the founder, owner and operator of Light's Workshop from 1961 until his retirement in 1986.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he retired after serving from 1939 until 1961 as Master Sergeant. He served during World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War.
He was a member of Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Linda L. Snead of Danville; one granddaughter, April McKenzie of Springfield; and one great-granddaughter Erin McKenzie of Springfield.
He was predeceased by one brother, Stanley Light; and one sister, Nona L. Thomas.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Clarence Jackson officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Addie Neal
DANVILLE, Va. - Addie Burnett Neal, 82 of 139 Greenwich Ave., died Friday, July 23, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 20, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Chesley T. Burnett and Ruth Ella Burnett Burnett.
She worked at Dan River Inc. before retiring and was a member of Banister Springs Primitive Baptist Church.
She is survived by one brother, Russell D. Burnett of Danville; and a sister, Etta E. Burnett of Danville.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. today at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with elders Melvin Shelton, H.P. Summers and Troy Simpson officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will be at the residence.
Margaret Price
DANVILLE, Va. Margaret Azalea Price, 82, formerly of 916 N. Main St., Danville, died Sunday, July 25, 1999 at Riverside Health Care Center nursing home. She had been in declining health since 1995.
Born March 3, 1917 in Danville, she was the daughter of John T. "Johnnie" Price and Emma Smiley Price.
She was a member of Grace Design United Methodist Church where she was the pianist for many years. She belonged to the Wyanette Council No. 22 Degree of Pocahontas, where she had held the office of Past Pocahontas.
Before her retirement, she was a secretary for Dr. A.R. Hoskins from 1945 to 1982 and for his son Dr. John Hoskins from December 1982 to December 1987.
She is survived by her sister, Doris P. Youngblood of Danville.
A graveside funeral will take place 11 a.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park. The Rev. Scott Holcolm-McLain will officiate.
Friends will be received at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Jones, 153 Benefield St., Danville. Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Rorer Smith
DANVILLE, Va. - Rorer Lee Smith, 72, of 1302 Charles St., died early Saturday morning, July 24, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after six years of declining health.
Born in the Axton community of Pittsylvania County on Nov. 30, 1926, he was the son of Josiah Smith and Irene Beck Smith.
On Oct. 3, 1951, he was married
to Mary Payne Smith.
A graduate of Brosville High School, he had lived in Danville for 39 years where he worked as a processing operator for 22 years before retiring at 57.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Merchant Marines for 31/2 years and the U.S. Army. He was a member of Missionary Movement Church, where he was a deacon and taught Sunday school.
In additional to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Susan Smith Jones and Betty Smith, both of Danville; and two sons, John Payne of Danville and Rorer Smith of Columbia, S.C.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roger Ewing officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park where military honors will be performed by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, Susan Jones, at 212 Chatham Court.
Ruby Swanson
DANVILLE, Va. - Ruby Walker Swanson, 81, of 275 Hawthorne Drive, died Saturday morning, July 24, 1999, at her residence after a decline in health since April.
Born March 21, 1918, in Mocksville, N.C., she was a daughter of Harley S. Walker and Lucy Dwiggens Walker.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Swanson.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was a registered nurse specializing in anesthesia.
She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, the Lady Astor Garden Club and the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History.
An avid golfer who had won several championships and played at Danville Golf Club, she was also a member of the Wednesday Club.
Survivors include two sons, John C. Swanson Jr. and Henry W. Swanson, both of Danville; two sisters, Helen Woosley of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Mary Kathryn Mallison of Greensboro, N.C.; and one grandchild.
Private graveside services will be held today at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. John LeGault and Dawn Davis officiating. Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Tyree Wimbush
DANVILLE, Va. - Tyree Nathaniel Wimbush, 23, of 616 Claiborne St., died Thursday, July 22, 1999, in Danville.
Born Jan. 29, 1976, in Danville, he was the son of Nathaniel and Sylvia B. Wimbush.
He was a barber at Michael's Cutting Up.
In addition to his parents of the residence, survivors include one brother, Michael Wimbush of the residence; one sister, Michelle Bullard of Virginia Beach; and a maternal grandmother, Evalina Brodnax of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bibleway Church with the Rev. J.P. Griffith Jr. officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.
A viewing will be held 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence.
Mildred Walters
GALAX, Va. - Mildred Frances Walters, 84, of 1480 Ringgold Depot Road, Ringgold died Friday, July 23, 1999 at Twin County Hospital in Galax, Va.
Born April 2, 1915 in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the daughter of Jim Glaze and Zella Glaze.
She was married
to Willie Walters, Sr. and was employed with Southern Processing for many years.
Survivors include her husband, two sons Willie Walters, Jr. of Ringgold and Marvin Walters of Danville; and two brothers, Willard Glaze and William Glaze both of Danville.
A funeral will be on Tuesday, July 27, 1999 at 1 p.m. at the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Ringgold with the Rev. Howard Graves officiating. A burial will follow in the church cemetery.
