Thelma Arthur
SANDY LEVEL, Va. - Thelma Cassidy Arthur, 62, of 1696 Yorkshire Drive, died Monday, July 26, 1999, at her residence.
Born March 6, 1937, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of Estelle David Cassidy, who survives, and Guy Whitfield Cassidy.
She was married
to Perry Quitman Arthur, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Sandy Level Baptist Church and an employee of Magnetek.
In addition to her mother, survivors include two sons, Al Arthur of Midlothian and Mark Arthur of Sandy Level; one daughter, Pam A. Barbour of Sandy Level; one brother, Ernest Cassidy of Sandy Level; three sisters, Ethel Myers of Danville, Louise Gammon and Virginia Barbour, both of Sandy Level; a foster child, Ricky Tate; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sandy Level Baptist Church with the Rev. Gene Ashworth and the Rev. R.G. Rowland officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Memorial cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Hubert Collins
BROSVILLE, Va. - Hubert Collins, 80, of 4492 Horseshoe Road, died Sunday, July 25, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after years of declining health.
Born Dec. 6, 1918, in Harnett County, N.C., he was the son of Thomas J. Collins and Tillie Collins.
He was married
July 19, 1941, to Irene Ferrell Collins, who predeceased him Nov. 7, 1995.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II.
He made his home in the Horseshoe Road community for over 40 years. He retired from Dan River Inc. in 1981, after 37 years of service. He was a member of Willis Memorial Baptist Church in Cascade.
Survivors include two sons, Kenneth M. Collins and Edward H. Collins, both of Danville; two daughters, Patsy C. Labiak of Virginia Beach and Barbara C. Tanner of Danville; one brother, Carlie Collins of Yanceyville, N.C.; five sisters, Ruby Davis and Mildred Coe, both of Sanford, N.C., Lema Lewter of Raleigh, N.C., and Josephine Clemons and Willie Harmon, both of Richmond; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by one sister, Virginia Heath.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Preslar and Glenn Hudson officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Doye Washington Light
DANVILLE, Va. - Doye Washington Light, 78, of 1555 Halifax Road, died Sunday morning, July 25, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Aug. 12, 1920, in Floyd County, Va., he was the son of Otho E. Light and Effie Poff Light.
On Aug. 9, 1941, he married
Helen Groff Light, who survive.
He lived in the Glenwood community since 1961. He was the founder, owner and operator of Light's Workshop from 1961, until retiring in 1986.
A veteran of the United States Army, he retired after serving from 1939, until 1961 as Master Sergeant.
He served during World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War.
He was a member of Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Linda L. Snead of Danville; one granddaughter, April McKenzie of Springfield, Va.; and one great-granddaughter Erin McKenzie of Springfield.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Stanley Light, Garland Light and Oliver Light; and two sisters, Nona L. Thomas and Beatrice Shelton.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Clarence Jackson officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park with military honors conducted by The American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 honor guard.

Margaret Price
DANVILLE, Va. Margaret Azalea Price, 82, formerly of 916 N. Main St., Danville, died Sunday, July 25, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center Nursing Home of declining health since 1995.
Born March 3, 1917 in Danville, she was the daughter of John T. "Johnnie" Price and Emma Smiley Price.
She was a member of Grace Design United Methodist Church where she was the pianist for many years. She belonged to the Wyanette Council No. 22 Degree of Pocahontas, where she had held the office of Past Pocahontas. She was a secretary for Dr. A.R. Hoskins from 1945 to 1982, before retiring and later worked with his son Dr. John Hoskins from December 1982 to December 1987.
She is survived by her sister, Doris P. Youngblood of Danville.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Scott Holcolm-McLain officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Jones, 153 Benefield St., Danville.

Mildred Walters
GALAX, Va. - Mildred Frances Walters, 84, of 1480 Ringgold Depot Road, Ringgold, died Friday, July 23, 1999, at Twin County Hospital in Galax.
Born April 2, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William Felix Glaise and Zella Emerson Glaise.
She was married
to Willie Walters Sr., who survives.
She was employed with Southern Processors Tobacco Company for 60 years before her retirement. She was a member of Guildfield Missionary Baptist Church. She was a faithful member of the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church and was active in many church activities.
Survivors include her husband, two sons, Willie Walters Jr. of Ringgold and Marvin Walters of Danville; and two brothers, Willard Glaise and William Glaise, both of Danville; three grandchildren and on great-grandchild.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. today at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Ringgold with the Rev. Howard Graves officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

Lillian Cain
DANVILLE, Va. - Lillian Davis Cain, 85, of 145 Shady Lane, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 27, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John L. Davis and Gracie Roach Davis.
She was married
June 6, 1970, to Neal F. Cain, who predeceased her.
She made her home in Danville for over 55 years, having lived with her son, at 145 Shady Lane for the past three years. She was an inspector for Dan River Inc., for 37 years before retiring at age 62. She was a member of First Church of the Bretheren on Glen Oak Drive.
Survivors include one daughter, Lois Cain Cox of Ruffin, N.C.; one son, Edward F. Cain of Danville; and one sister, Elsie Arnold of Altavista; 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dale Watson and the Rev. Richard Binderup officiating. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.

Lavycie Coward
DANVILLE, Va. - Lavycie Meadors Coward, 83, of 113 Brightwell Drive, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at her home after one year of declining health.
Born Nov. 27, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Oscar Samuel Meadors and Hattie Byrd Meadors.
She was married
Nov. 30, 1935, to James Daniel "Jim" Coward.
She lived her entire life in Danville, where she retired after 47 years with Dan River Inc. At the company, she worked in the purchasing department as a receptionist and clerk.
She was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church, where she served as the assistant secretary of Adult 6 and helped organize the retiree club. She taught in the junior department.
She was a member of the Thalia Garden Club and was past president of the American Business Women's Association.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include five sisters, Nellie M. Wallace of Dry Fork, and Ethel M. Murphy, Virginia M. Bryant, Lena M. Stowe and Carolyn M. Moss, all of Danville; three brothers, Oscar S. Meadors Jr. of Danville, Steve C. Meadors of Denver, Colo., and Walter V. Meadors of Goldsboro, N.C.
She was predeceased by two brothers, John Samuel Meadors and Donald Wayne Meadors.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Lee Ellison officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Clara Dixon
JAVA, Va. - Clara Bell Dixon, 78, of 141 Petty Lane, died Monday afternoon, July 26, 1999, in the Stratford Health Care Center.
Born April 1, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Dillard Logan and Ollie Coleman Logan.
She was married
to Isaiah Dixon predeceased her.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Riceville Baptist Church, in Java, where she served on the usher board, pastor aide and ladies auxilliary.
Survivors include two sisters, Pinkie Sue Williams of Danville, and Oatrice L. Logan of Java; one brother, Clevester Logan of Charlottesville.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son, Garnett H. Dixon; one sister, Etta Mae Logan and two brothers, Birdie Logan and Fred Logan.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. at the Riceville Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Walker officiating. Burial will be at the Dixon Family cemetery, Nathalie, Va.
The family will receive friends 12:30-1 p.m. at the church, prior to service.

Sheila Hardy
DANVILLE, Va. - Sheila Boyd Hardy, 48, of 145 Beech Ave., died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at her residence after one year of declining health.
Born Sept. 13, 1950, in Danville, she was the daughter of Tom Boyd and Clara Shaw Boyd.
She was married
to Danny Arthur Hardy, who survives.
She made her home in Danville all of her life. She worked as a nurse's aid with Roman Eagle memorial Home, and was a member of the Westover Family Worship Center.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Forrest Arthur Hardy of the residence; two sisters, Lydia Boyd Slone of Keeling, and Jennifer Boyd Hummmert of Chatham.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. Jimmy Mootz officiating.

Dorothy Hundley
DANVILLE, Va. - Dorothy Evans Davis Hundley, age 80, of 651 Rosemary Lane, died at the residence, Tuesday morning, July 27, 1999, after three years of declining health.
Mrs. Hundley was born in Danville on February 26, 1919, a daughter of the late Elbert B. (Buck) Evans and Mary Clemmie Bryant Evans.
She was predeceased by both husbands, Lee Clark Davis and Russell Lyle Hundley.
Mrs. Hundley made her home at Heritage Towers in Danville for 15 years before moving to Roman Eagle Memorial Home two years ago. She had been living at 651 Rosemary Lane for the past two weeks.
She worked as a weaver for Dan River Inc. for 30 years and also worked for Roman Eagle Memorial Home for one year, and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church on Stevens Street.
She was predeceased by a brother, Oscar Leonard Evans; three sisters, Bessie E. Owen, Blanche Evans and Ruby E. Gutherie, and two grandchildren, Anna Marie Orzel and James Ramsey McGhee, and one great grandchild, Lisa Allen.
Survivors include five daughters, Louise D. Pruitt, Mary Sue Allen, Margie D. Thomas, and Shirley Crumpton, all of Danville, and Janice C. McCormick of Caldwell, Texas; and six sons: Luther Wayne Davis, Lee Clark Davis Jr. and Thomas "Tommy" Evans Davis, all of Danville and Ronie L. Davis and Charles L. Davis, both of Bachelors Hall, and Garrie L. Davis of Tennessee, and 22 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Billy Cook and Rev. Roger Ewing. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7:00-8:30 p.m. and at other times at the residence of her son, Charles L. Davis, at 325 Bowe Street in the Bachelors Hall community.
