Charles Hutchison
DANVILLE, Va. - Charles Edward Hutchison, 74, of 206 Scales St., died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at his residence after a decline in health since March.
Born March 26, 1925, in Kentucky, he was the son of Alonzou Hutchison and Bertha Purchase Hutchison.
He was married
July 4, 1987, to Linda Fowler Hutchison, who survives.He lived in Martinsville, prior to moving to Danville 12 years ago. He had been retired since 1984.In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two step-daughters, Linda Fowler Hutchison of the residence, and Lisa Pizzino of Burlington, N.C.; and four step-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Grace Motley
CHATHAM, Va. - Grace Shirley Motley, 74, of 796 Motley Road, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at Piney Forest Health Care.
Born June 28, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Leslie Bernard Motley and Patty Shelton Motley.
She was retired from the United States Air Force, due to disability. She served during World War II. She was a member of Chatham Christian Church.
Survivors include two brothers, Cecil B. Motley of Gretna and Herman D. Motley of Chatham; one sister, Charlotte Motley of Chatham.
She was predeceased by one brother, Duke S. Motley and two sisters, Bernice M. Isaacs and Clarice M. Austin.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. James Bullock and the Rev. Carson Dalton officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Jack Paxton
DANVILLE, Va. - William Jennings "Jack" Paxton, of Vance Community of Mount Cross Road, died Monday, July 26, 1999, at his residence.
Born Feb. 27, 1930, in Marion, N.C., he was the son of William J. Paxton Sr. and Addie Mae Davis Paxton.
He was married
to Lois C. Paxton, who survives.
He was raised and lived in the Pittsylvania County and Danville area. He owned and operated Poteat Moving and Storage for many years and was also employed by Durham Hosiery for 20 years until his retirement in 1995.
He was a member of Sharon Baptist Church, a member of the Danville Lions Club, and Ramah Lodge No. 70. He was past president of Danville Shrine Club, Danville Scottish Rite Bodies and ACCA Temple.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Wyona Paxton Witcher of Danville and Wanda Paxton Neal of Goochland; one stepson, Roger S. Cooke of Danville; one stepdaughter, Cynthia Shackelford of Cary, N.C.; one sister, Dorothy Paxton McDaniel of Petersburg; one half-sister, Charlene Grinstead of Danville; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Townes Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Allen Holder officiating. Interment
will be in Sharon Baptist Church cemetery with Masonic burial rites will be conducted by Ramah Lodge No. 70.
Mary Pierce
CHATHAM, Va. - Mary Elizabeth Pruitt Pierce, of 169 Pierce Lane, died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born August 26, 1921, in Pelham, N.C., she was the daughter of Charlie Pruitt and Annie Pruitt Pruitt.
She was married
to Frank Edgar Pierce, who predeceased her.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sons, Ralph E. Pierce and Samuel A. Pierce, both of Chatham; eight daughters, Janet P. Adkins, Joanne P. Dalton, Anna P. Sours, all of Gretna, Mildred P. Betterton, Sarah P. Adkins and Jewell P. Adkins, Sue P. Moser and Linda P. Davis, all of Chatham; three brothers, Jeff L. Pruitt and Banister L. Pruitt, both of Blairs, and Jesse W. Pruitt of Danville; five sisters, Virginia L. Pruitt and Viola E. Pruitt, both of Danville, Sadie P. Shelton of Tennessee, Francis P. Rowland and Rebecca P. Combs, both of Danville; 20 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Mack W. Pruitt and Pete Pruitt.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Hillcrest Burial Park with the Rev. Haywood Alcorn and the Rev. Albert Moser officiating. Interment
will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.

Wayne Price
CHATHAM, Va. - Wayne Price, 45, of 2136 Banister Road, died Monday, July 26, 1999, at 4949 Strawberry Road, Chatham.
Born April 2, 1954, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Glen Price and Reba Mahan Price.
He was employed by Dan River Inc. prior to his retirement on disability. He was a member of Callands Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Theresa Price Morris of Doswell; two sons, Wayne Price Jr. of Martinsville, and Dominic White of Chatham; two brothers, Richard Price and Lomack Price of Chatham; one half-sister, Juanita Price Watts of Alexandria; and one grandchild.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Calvin Price, Kenneth Price and Leroy Price.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. today at Callands Baptist Church with the Rev. Obadele St. George officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his brother, Richard Price, 393 Hickory Road.

John Toth
DANVILLE, Va. - John Allen Toth, 54, of 433 Jeanette Drive, died Monday, July 26, 1999, at his residence after two years of declining health.
Born April 18, 1945, in Saline, Mich., he was the son of John Toth and Gay Doty Toth.
He was married
to Ming Yeuh Toth, who survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and was retired from the United States Air Force Reserves and served in Vietnam.
He lived in the Danville and Pittsylvania County area for the past 17 years and was employed with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., prior to his decline in health.
He was a member of The Veterans of Foreign War Ballard Pruitt Post No. 647 and was a member of the United Steel Workers Association local UR831. He was of the Methodist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, John H. Toth of Baltimore, and Jason A. Toth of San Diego, Ca.; two sisters, Sandy Kestle of Jackson, Mich. and Mary Kuzma of Battlecreek, Mich.
A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Salisbury National cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence.
Phil Baker
DANVILLE, Va. - Phil Edward Baker, 39, of 143 Ross St., died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at Duke Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
Born July 15, 1960, in Lynchburg, he was the son of Wesley Lee Baker and Pearl Carter Baker, who both survive.
He was last employed at International House of Pancakes and was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Redhouse.
In addition to his parents, survivors include five brothers, Earl Carter of Atlanta, James Baker of Hurt, Charles Baker of Danville, Clyde Baker of Rocky Mount, and Louis Baker of Appomattox; and one sister, Sharon Baker of Danville.
He was predeceased by one brother, Tyrone Baker.
A funeral will be Monday 3:30 p.m. at Miracle Revival Fellowship Holiness Church, Long Island, with the Bishop Milton Waller and Elder James Chalmers officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

Lillian Cain
DANVILLE, Va. - Lillian Davis Cain, 85, of 145 Shady Lane, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 27, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John L. Davis and Gracie Roach Davis.
She was married
to Neal F. Cain, who predeceased her June 6, 1970.
She made her home in Danville for over 55 years, having lived with her son, at 145 Shady Lane for the past three years. She was an inspector for Dan River Inc., for 37 years before retiring at age 62. She was a member of First Church of the Brethren on Glen Oak Drive.
Survivors include one daughter, Lois Cain Cox of Ruffin, N.C.; one son, Edward F. Cain of Danville; and one sister, Elsie Arnold of Altavista; 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dale Watson and the Rev. Richard Binderup officiating.
Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.

Howard Carter
WILDWOOD, Va. - Howard Cosby Carter, 88, of 1170 Carter's Lane, died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at his residence.
Born May 21, 1911, in Halifax County, he was the son of James Frank Carter and Florence Cosby Carter.
He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.
Survivors include one sister, Margaret Carter Hiner of Richmond; one brother, James Carter of Hampton.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Harry Thomas officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

Sheila Hardy
DANVILLE, Va. - Sheila Boyd Hardy, 48, of 145 Beech Ave., died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at her residence after one year of declining health.
Born Sept. 13, 1950, in Danville, she was the daughter of Tom Boyd and Clara Shaw Boyd.
She was married
to Danny Arthur Hardy, who survives.
She made her home in Danville all of her life. She worked as a nurse's aid with Roman Eagle memorial Home, and was a member of the Westover Family Worship Center.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Forrest Arthur Hardy of the residence; two sisters, Lydia Boyd Slone of Keeling, and Jennifer Boyd Hummmert of Chatham.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. Jimmy Mootz officiating.

HALIFAX, Va. - Frances Guthrie Hunt, 76, of 2133 Dudley Road, died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at her residence.
Born Nov. 13, 1922, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Charles Edward Guthrie and Charlotte Belle Singleton Guthrie.
She was married
to Roy Ryland Hunt.
She was a member of Beth Car Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Gayle H. Cole of South Boston and Jackie H. Crews of Halifax; four sons, Paul R. Hunt of Roanoke, Roderick G. "Ricky" Hunt and David T. Hunt, both of South Boston and Luke J. Hunt of Halifax; one brother, F.E. "Buck" Guthrie of Brookneal; one sister, Thelma Sinning of South Boston; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Beth Car Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Childrey Baptist Church cemetery.
