Charles Hutchison

DANVILLE, Va. - Charles Edward Hutchison, 74, of 206 Scales St., died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at his residence after a decline in health since March.

Born March 26, 1925, in Kentucky, he was the son of Alonzou Hutchison and Bertha Purchase Hutchison.

He was married July 4, 1987, to Linda Fowler Hutchison, who survives.

He lived in Martinsville, prior to moving to Danville 12 years ago. He had been retired since 1984.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one step-daughter, Lisa Pizzino of Burlington, N.C.; and four step-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Beulah Montgomery

BROSVILLE, Va. - Beulah Rachel Motley Montgomery, age 70, of 11532 Martinsville Highway, died Thursday afternoon, July 29, 1999, at the family residence at Brosville with her family after being in critical condition for three years.

Mrs. Montgomery was born in the Mountain Valley community of Henry County on August 23, 1928, a daughter of the late Charlie B. Motley Sr., and Maggie Barbour Motley.

She was predeceased by her husband, James W. Montgomery who died in 1985.

Mrs. Montgomery had made her home at Brosville since 1946, where she was a member of Brosville United Methodist Church, the U.M.W. of the church, also the Lindsey Bible Class and a choir member of the church.

She worked in the spinning room for Dan River Inc. for 25 years before retiring on disability in 1982, and was also a homemaker and a farmer.

She was predeceased by two grandsons, Matthew Lee Montgomery and Timothy Lee Montgomery.

Survivors include two sons: Tommy L. Montgomery and James W. Montgomery and his wife, Vicki Montgomery, all of Brosville, and two sisters: Louise Tripplett of Sandy River, and Alice Hopkins of Martinsville, and four brothers: Charlie B. Motley of Providence, North Carolina, and Bobby R. Motley and Abra Motley, both of Axton, and Edward Motley of Martinsville, and two granddaughters: Sara Lynn Strickland and Mary Sue Gibson, and five great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Brosville United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dave Rochford. Interment icon will follow at the Owen Family cemetery at Brosville.

The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home today from 7:00-8:30, and at other times at the residence of her son, Tommy, at 11456 Martinsville Highway in the Brosville community.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Danville Cancer Association, 1225 West Main Street, Danville, Va. 24541 or the Wayles R. Harrison Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 2687, Danville, Va. 24541.

Julia Pannill

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Julia Saunders Pannill, 81, of 300 Pollard St., died Thursday, July 29, 1999, in Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born April 16, 1918, in Gillam, W. Va., she was the daughter of Fletcher C. Woods and Fannie Eva Arrington Woods.

She was married to Berkley Saunders, who predeceased her, and later to Edward Levell Pannill, who survives.

She attended Bluefield State College and received her B.S. from Morgan State University and her master's degree from A&T State University. She taught in Pittsylvania County for 41 years and Nelson County for one year.

She taught at Hurt Elementary, Mount Airy Elementary, Cascade Elementary, the former Saunders Elementary School in Kentuck and Glass Elementary School in Java. She was a member of Rocky Hill Primitive Baptist Church, Rocky Mount.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Catherine Hazel Patterson of Lynchburg.

In addition to her first husband, she was predeceased by one sister, Choppie Elizabeth Goode.

A funeral will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Miller Funeral Home Chapel with the Elder Buford Craighead and Elder Melvin Jamerson officiating. Burial will be in Pannill Family cemetery, Hurt, Va.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Clara Ross

HALIFAX, Va. - Clara Elizabeth Wallace Ross, 71, of 1009 Back St., died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital, South Boston.

Born Feb. 2, 1928, in Milford, Conn., she was the daughter of Laura Wallace.

In addition to her mother, survivors include one son, Jamess Ross of Halifax; and three grandchildren.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church in Halifax, with the Father Arceleous Ellott Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Banister Hill Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Lawrence Smith

LAKELAND, Fla. - Lawrence Terry Smith, 45, died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 5, 1953, in Danville, Va., he was married to Ruth S. Smith, who survives. He lived in Pelham, N.C., in 1987.

He was a United States Marine Corps veteran and an automobile body repairman. He was a Methodist.

In addition to his wife of Lakeland, Fla., survivors include one son, David Guthrie of Lakeland; two daughters, Tammy Sonnenberg and Tracie Merricks, both of Lakeland; two brothers, Daryle Smith of Danville, Va., and Harold Smith of Nashville, Tenn.; two sisters, Brenda Myers of Pelham, N.C. and Linda Dixon of Danville, Va.; and one grandchild.

A funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Gentry Morrison Northside Funeral Home Chapel, Lakeland.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Virginia Todd

DANVILLE, Va. - Virginia B. Todd, 73, of 401 Franklin Turnpike, died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at Roman Eagle Nursing Home.

Born Dec. 21, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Thomas Brown and Erma Lee Hall Brown.

She was married to Edmund H. "Pete" Todd Jr., who predeceased her.

She worked at Dan River Inc. for 45 years as a spooler in Dept. 8A dress.

Survivors include one son, Benny T. Snead Jr. of Eden, N.C.; two daughters, Linda S. Gunnell and Sheila D. Huff, both of Danville; one sister, Brenda Gauldin of Danville; one brother, David Brown of Danville; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one son, Bobby L. Snead.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. James Albert officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Giles Walker

DANVILLE, Va. - Giles Walker, 77, of 1317 Old Mayfield Road, died Thursday, July 29, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after five years of declining health.

Born June 9, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Charles Troy Walker and Lula Mangrum Walker.

He was married to Elizabeth Shelton Walker, who survives.

He made his home in the Mayfield Road community all of his life where he was a retired farmer and a member of Stokesland United Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Charlotte Shelton of Ringgold and Sandra Newsome of Danville; three brothers, Melvin Walker of Ringgold, Curtis Walker and Jerry Walker, both of Danville; two step-grandchildren, one great-grandchild and two step-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Howard Walker and was also predeceased by a grandson.

A funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gilmer Setliff officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

James Wertz Jr.

DANVILLE, Va. - James Edgar Wertz Jr., 82, of 169 North Ave., died Thursday, July 29, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.

Born May 10, 1917, in Reading, Pa., he was the son of James Edgar Wertz Sr. and Ruth Naomi Rheinhold.

He was married to Cora Frances Farmer Wertz, who predeceased him in 1953, and later married Vergie Merricks Wertz, who survives.

He was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church. He lived in Gretna before moving to Danville in 1960. He was retired as an insurance agent with American General Insurance Company.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, James R. Wertz of Gretna, Robert H. Agee and Wayne M. Agee, both of Danville; three daughters, Cora Farmer Wertz Plass of Columbia, S.C., Ruth Frances Wertz of Hylton Head, S.C., and Melinda Page Agee of Avondale Estates, Ga.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Steve Carlton and the Rev. Lee Ellison officiating.

Interment will be in Gretna Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Phyllis Dallas

DRY FORK, Va. - Phyllis Elaine Dallas, 50, of 453 FC Beverly Road, died Friday, July 30, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center after a four-day stay and 18 years of declining health.

Born Jan. 2, 1949, in Danville, she was the daughter of Henry Clay Dallas and Lorenza Agee Dallas, who both survive.

She lived her life in the Whitmell community where she had worked at Danville Regional Medical Center prior to her decline in health. She was a member of Whitmell United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, survivors include one brother, Donald W. Dallas of Whitmell; one sister, Connie D. Davis of Whitmell; two brothers, Thomas B. Dallas of Danville, and Andy W. Dallas of Whitmell.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Donald Warrick Jr. officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Kathleen Gill

DANVILLE, Va. - Kathleen Eula Wilson Gill, 86, of 126 Westview Drive, died Friday morning, July 30, 1999, at her residence.

Born July 24, 1913, in Bristol in Washington County, she was the daughter of George Washington Wilson and Lula Belle Fleanor Wilson.

She was married May 12, 1929, to Aulton Edward Gill, who predeceased her April 13, 1967.

She spent most of her life in Danville where she worked as an inspector for Dan River Inc. for 35 years before retiring at the age of 65.

She was a member of Arlington Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Lue Keatts of Axton and Claudine Freeman of Bachelors Hall; one sister, Winiford Worley of Danville; 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sons, Paul E. Gill Sr. and Billy Eugene Gill; two brothers, Virgil Wilson and Ralph Wilson; two sisters, Ernestine McGowan and Cleo Pippin.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Greeson and Elder J.R. Rakes officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Donald Johnson

DRY FORK, Va. - Donald Gene Johnson, 59, of 4900 Whitmell School Road, died suddenly, Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center, Emergency Department.

Born June 17, 1940, in Abington, he was the son of Ray Harvie Johnson and Nellie Clapp Stapleton.

He was a retired United States Army veteran with 23 years of service, 13 of which he was a recruiter. He was a member of Community Baptist church, and a member of Ballard Pruitt Post No. 647 Veterans of Foreign War. He owned and operated Old 97 Conestoga Trucking Co. and M.C.A. He lived in the Whitmell community since 1981.

Survivors include one son, Donald Brian Johnson of Dry Fork; one daughter, Marie J. Hendley of Danville; three brothers, Ray Curtis Johnson, David Hodges and Sonny Hodges; and seven grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Paula Keye Laurens and Rosalyn Gale Johnson; and one brother, Charles Stapleton.

A funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. James Albert officiating with American Legion Post No. 325 conducting military rites. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
