Beulah Montgomery
BROSVILLE, Va. - Beulah Rachel Motley Montgomery, age 70, of 11532 Martinsville Highway, died Thursday afternoon, July 29, 1999, at the family residence at Brosville with her family after being in critical condition for three years.
Mrs. Montgomery was born in the Mountain Valley community of Henry County on August 23, 1928, a daughter of the late Charlie B. Motley Sr., and Maggie Barbour Motley.
She was predeceased by her husband, James W. Montgomery who died in 1985.
Mrs. Montgomery had made her home at Brosville since 1946, where she was a member of Brosville United Methodist Church, the U.M.W. of the church, also the Lindsey Bible Class and a choir member of the church. She worked in the spinning room for Dan River Inc. for 25 years before retiring on disability in 1982, and was also a homemaker and a farmer.
She was predeceased by two grandsons, Matthew Lee Montgomery and Timothy Lee Montgomery.
Survivors include two sons: Tommy L. Montgomery and James W. Montgomery and his wife, Vicki Montgomery, all of Brosville, and two sisters: Louise Tripplett of Sandy River, and Alice Hopkins of Martinsville, and four brothers: Charlie B. Motley of Providence, North Carolina, and Bobby R. Motley and Abra Motley, both of Axton, and Edward Motley of Martinsville, and two granddaughters: Sara Lynn Strickland and Mary Sue Gibson, and five great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. today at Brosville United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dave Rochford. Interment
will follow at the Owen Family cemetery at Brosville.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her son, Tommy, at 11456 Martinsville Highway in the Brosville community.

Virginia Todd
DANVILLE, Va. - Virginia B. Todd, 73, of 401 Franklin Turnpike, died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at Roman Eagle Nursing Home.
Born Dec. 21, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Thomas Brown and Erma Lee Hall Brown. She was married
to Edmund H. "Pete" Todd Jr., who predeceased her.
She worked at Dan River Inc. for 45 years as a spooler in Dept. 8A dress.
Survivors include one son, Benny T. Snead Jr. of Eden, N.C.; two daughters, Linda S. Gunnell and Sheila D. Huff, both of Danville; one sister, Brenda Gauldin of Danville; one brother, David Brown of Danville; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Bobby L. Snead.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. James Albert officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Giles Walker
DANVILLE, Va. - Giles Walker, 77, of 1317 Old Mayfield Road, died Thursday, July 29, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after five years of declining health.
Born June 9, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Charles Troy Walker and Lula Mangrum Walker.
He was married
to Elizabeth Shelton Walker, who survives.
He made his home in the Mayfield Road community all of his life where he was a retired farmer and a member of Stokesland United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Charlotte Shelton of Ringgold and Sandra Newsome of Danville; three brothers, Melvin Walker of Ringgold, Curtis Walker and Jerry Walker, both of Danville; two step-grandchildren, one great-grandchild and two step-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Howard Walker and was also predeceased by a grandson.
A funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gilmer Setliff officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Janie Walker
DANVILLE, Va. - Janie Lipscomb Poteat Walker, 89, of 622 Monument St., died Thursday, July 8, 1999, at her residence.
Born Feb. 7, 1910, in Blanch, N.C., she was the daughter of Ada Lipscomb.
She was married
Sept. 8, 1930, to Willie Walker, who predeceased her.
She was an active member of River Zion Baptist Church. She was employed for many years at Local Tobacco Company, (Liggett).
Survivors include one niece, Sharylee VanderBoenkamp of Los Angeles; and one grandson, Eric C. Poteat of Washington.
A memorial service was 3 p.m. Thursday, July 15, 1999, in Los Angeles.
Burial will be in San Juan Islands, Washington state.

Elizabeth Welch
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Elizabeth Sudie Dodson Welch, 100, of 83 28th St., Apt. 4, died Thursday, July 29, 1999, at the Newport Nursing Home after several weeks of declining health.
Born Aug. 19, 1898, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Ellis Dodson and Sallie Blankenship Dodson.
She was married
to Eugene G. Welch, who predeceased her in 1965.
She lived in the Newport News area for more than 40 years and previously lived in the Danville area where she was a member of First Baptist Church. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include one niece, Doris Astin of Danville and a nephew, B.C. Dodson Jr. of Oxen Hill, Md.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park.

James Wertz Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - James Edgar Wertz Jr., 82, of 169 North Ave., died Thursday, July 29, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
Born May 10, 1917, in Reading, Pa., he was the son of James Edgar Wertz Sr. and Ruth Naomi Reinhold.
He was married
to Cora Frances Farmer Wertz, who predeceased him in 1953, and later married
Vergie Merricks Wertz, who survives.
He was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church. He lived in Gretna before moving to Danville in 1960. He was retired as an insurance agent with American General Insurance Company.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, James R. Wertz of Gretna, Robert H. Agee and Wayne M. Agee, both of Danville; three daughters, Cora Farmer Wertz Plass of Columbia, S.C., Ruth Frances Wertz of Hylton Head, S.C., and Melinda Paige Agee of Avondale Estates, Ga.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Steve Carlton and the Rev. Lee Ellison officiating.
Interment will be in Gretna Burial Park.

Kenneth Williamson
DANVILLE, Va. - Kenneth Lee Williamson, 35, 5465 Old Richmond Road, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at his residence.
Born April 30, 1964, in Danville, he was the son of Marvin Williamson and Shirley Farmer Williamson, both survive.
He was a member of Pleasant Chapel Baptist Church and attended the Pittsylvania County School System.
In addition to his parents of Danville, survivors include one daughter, Champagne Slade of Danville and two sons, Kurrunn Williamson and Antonio Luck, both of Danville; two brothers, Clarence Williamson and Melvin Williamson, both of Danville; and one sister, Jacqueline Love.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Floyd Standfield officiating..
A viewing will be from 2-8 p.m. today at L.H. Brooks and Brothers Funeral Home.

Beatrice Sadler
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Beatrice Ray Sadler, 70, of 2162 Huell Matthews Highway, South Boston, died July 31, 1999 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Dec. 12, 1928, in Halifax County, Sadler was a daughter of Kermit Ray and Margaret Gravitt Ray. She was married
to Ellis Stover "Pete" Sadler, who preceded her in death.
She was retired from J.P. Stevens. She was a member of Second Baptist Church.
Sadler is survived by her son, Kent Sadler of South Boston; a daughter, Gina S. Cole of South Boston; one sister, Dianne Conner of Burlington, N.C., three brothers, Ira Ray of Buffalo Junction, Douglas Ray and Scott Ray, both of South Boston; and three grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one brother, Lucius Ray.
A graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Halifax Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Jim Smith and the Rev. Jack Stewart officiating.
The family will receive friends at the home of Sadler's daughter, Gina Cole, 2162 Huell Matthews Highway, South Boston.
Alyne Wilmoth
DANVILLE, Va. - Alyne McBride Wilmoth, 80, of 885 Luna Lake Road died Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999, at her residence after seven months of declining health.
Born July 25, 1919, in Draper, N.C., Wilmoth was the daughter of Robert Harrison McBride and Trudy Shelton McBride. She was married
to Elwood Wilmoth, who died Jan. 19, 1981.
She was a charter member of Faith Memorial Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir.
She lived most of her life in Danville and, until her retirement, was a registered nurse at Danville Regional Medical Center.
She is survived by stepmother, Estelle Childress of Danville; two sons, William E. Wilmoth of Mount Hill and Richard W. Wilmoth of Danville; one daughter, Frances Bowman of Danville; two brothers, Fred McBride of Dry Fork and L.C. McBride of Lynchburg; two sisters, Idellas Rich of Danville and Helen Clark of Danville; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert McBride.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Faith Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Daniel G. Lackey officiating. Burial will follow in Schoolfield cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home, and at other times the family will be at daughter Frances Bowman's residence, 345 Cedarbrook Drive, Danville.
Peggy Belton
Peggy Ann Belton died July 29, 1999.
She was married
to John Williams.
Survivors include two sons, Dorian Williams and Mark Williams; one sister, Shirley Jean William; four grandchildren.

will be at Gates of Heaven cemetery, Mt. Royal, Penn. The family will receive friends 9 a.m. Wednesday, at the church.

Junior Richardson
DANVILLE, Va. - Hugh Gordon Richardson Jr., 43, of 2001 South Boston Road, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center Emergency Room after four years of declining health.
Born Jan. 7, 1956, in Danville, he was the son of Hugh Gordon Richardson Sr. and Nancy Reece Richardson, who both survive.
He was married
June 28, 1975, to Susan Paul Richardson, who also survives.
He lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. He worked with the city of Danville Public Works Department prior to working with Apac of Virginia in Plant Maintenance prior to his decline in health. He was a member of the Central Boulevard Church of God and a member of the Danville Air Modelers Club.
In addition to his parents of Danville, and wife of the residence, survivors include one sister, Joan R. Barksdale of Danville, and one brother, Donald (Donnie) Wayne Richardson of Ringgold.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. David Wilson officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
