Dink Towler
DANVILLE, Va. - James "Dink" Winslow Towler, 71, of 621 Main St., died Monday, August 2, 1999, at his residence.
Born Sept. 10, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Sam Henry Towler and Pearl Carter Towler.
He served in the United States Army. He was educated in Pittsylvania County School system and was employed at Dan River Inc. for many years.
Survivors include two daughters, E. Jeanette T. Davis and Sandra T. Davis, both of Blairs; two sisters, Dorothy King of Danville and Pearl Drayton of Englewood, N.J.; three brothers, Hobson Towler and Clarence Towler, both of Danville, and Maxwell Towler of Arlington.
A funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Reid officiating. Burial will be in New Sandy Creek Baptist Church cemetery, Keeling, Va., with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his brother, Hobson Towler, 4781 Old Richmond Road, Danville.
Jerry Williams
ROANOKE, Va. - Jerry Dean Williams, 73, of 3406 Kim Court #B8, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem, after one week and several years of declining health.
Born July 22, 1926, in Polk County, N.C., he was the son of Claude O. Williams and Daisy Shechan Williams.
He was married
to Elizabeth Newby Williams, who survives.
He served in the United States Army in World War II.
He had been living in the Roanoke area for the past 11 years where he owned and operated Misty Meadows Produce and also in 1989, had retired from ITT, after years of service.
He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include five sons, Roger Dale Williams of Dallas, N.C., Ronnie Jay Williams of Charlotte, N.C., Tommy Claude Williams and Timmothy Charles Williams, both of Sanford, N.C., and David Wayne Williams of Milton, N.C.; one daughter, Teri Lynn Greenwood of Thompson Station, Tenn; one stepson, Edwin Atkinson Chaney, Jr. of South Boston, Va.; one stepdaughter Allison Chaney Wazeka of South Boston; two brothers James B. Williams of Mills Springs, N.C., and Charles Williams of Statesville, N.C.; four sisters, Evelyn Crider of Mills Springs, N.C., Betty Jenkins and Maxine Stines, both of Dallas, N.C., and Annie Taylor of Concord, N.C.; and 17 grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Benny Church officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. today at the chapel and at other times at the residence of Barbara Easley, 2149 Hackberry Road, Sutherlin, Va.
James Bigelow
DANVILLE, Va. - James Bigelow, 75, of 226 Prospect St., died Monday, August 2, 1999, at Berry Hill Nursing Home in South Boston.
Born May 17, 1924, in Hamar, N.C., he was the son of Cornelius Bigelow.
He was married
to Virginia Bigelow, who survives.
He worked at Fuquai Pontiac for many years as an automobile painter.
In addition to his wife of residence, survivors include one daughter, Alice B. Archey of Woodstock, Ga.; two sons, James Bigelow Jr. of Cambridge, Mass., and Landon Bigelow of Fort Bragg, N.C.; seven sisters, Alma Lott and Mary Walton, both of Anchorage, Alaska, Sarah Russell of Hyattsville, Md., Margaret Washington and Marie Bigelow, both of Plainfield, N.J., Pearl Thompson of Washington; and Ruby Claybourne of Columbia, Md.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Vance Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Herbert L. Dickerson officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Willie Cassada
DANVILLE, Va. - Willie Mae Osborne Cassada, 83, of 2544 Airview Drive, died Wednesday, August 4, 1999, at Roman Eagle Nursing Home.
Born Nov. 21, 1915, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Henry David Osborne and Frances Berdie Osborne.
She was married
May 4, 1962, to Douglas Clarence "DEE" Cassada, who survives.
She worked at Dan River Inc. until retirement as a sewer. She was a member of the Baptist Tabernacle, where she was a former Sunday school teacher.
In addition to her husband, survivors include three sons, Clyde Doss and Lester Doss, both of Danville and Calvin Doss of Martinsville; two brothers, Allen Osborne of Baltimore, and Cliff Osborne of Florida; three sisters, Thelma Eanes of South Boston, Roe Dance of Durham, N.C., and Elizabeth Gardener of Burlington, N.C.; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. today at the Baptist Tabernacle with the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr. and the Rev. Lammar Mooneyham and the Rev. Robert Vermillion officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Thomas Easley
MOUNT RAINIER, Md. - Thomas Holt Easley, 80, died Monday, August 2, 1999, at Providence Hospital in Washington.
Born Sept. 18, 1918, in Halifax County, Va.
He was married
to Magnolia Easley, who survives.
In addition to his wife of Mount Rainier, Md., survivors include one son, William Easley of Mt. Rainier; four daughters Jean Campbell of District Heights, Md., Virginia Willis of Suitland, Md., Rev. Mable Stephens of District Heights, and Viola Lawson of Waldorf. Md.; two brothers, Joseph Easley and Rev. Silas Easley of Halifax, Va.; and 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
A funeral will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Banister Hill C.M.E. Church in Nathalie, Va., with the Rev. Francis Coates officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
There will be a viewing 1-4 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Annie Goins
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Annie L. Goins, 80, of 2502 Dexter Road, died Monday, August 2, 1999, at the University Hospital, Augusta.
Born June 19, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the daughter of Mr. White and Beatrice Coleman White.
She was married
to Charlie Roosevelt Goins, who predeceased her.
Survivors include four daughters, Celia Baird and Beatrice Lindsey, both of Irvington, N.J., Mauretta Goins of Jersey City, N.J., and Peggy Adams of Augusta; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Camp Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie J. Toomer officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Sadie Hanger
STAUNTON, Va. - Sadie Williams Hanger, 97, of Baldwin Park, died Tuesday, August 3, 1999, at Augusta Medical Center in Fisherville.
Born March 4, 1902, in Albermarle County, she was the daughter of Percy G. Wiliams and Edna Lipscomb Williams.
She was married
to William Clyde Hanger, who predeceased her.
She earned a BS degree from the State Teachers College in Harrisonburg (now James Madison University), and her master's from Comumbia University, New York City. She was biology teacher at Washington Lee High School in Arlington, from 1926-1944, prior to marriage. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include three step-daughters, Frances Trogdon of Charlottesville, Dorothy Klein of Oak Lawn, Ill., Jean Lindstrom of Crestwood, Ill.; one step-son, Walter Chester Hanger of Miami.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one stepdaughter, Hannah Crosby; one brother, Percy B. Williams; and one sister, Lutie Garwood.
A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Monday at Hamrick Funeral Home with the Rev. Herbert T. Lewis officiating. Burial will be private with no public visitation.

Athara "Toni" Riley Hunt
DANVILLE, Va. - Athara "Toni" Riley Hunt, 79, of 1640 Leemont Court, died Thursday, August 5, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center after being a resident for three weeks.
Born Sept. 14, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of I.N. Riley and Annie Elizabeth Hollie Riley.
She was married
July 6, 1940, to Robert Carrington Hunt Jr., who predeceased her April 4, 1993.
She spent her entire life in Danville. She was a secretary for the Virginia Department of Corrections Probation and Parole Office prior to retirement. She was a member of Grace-Design United Methodist Church. She served as president of the Business and Professional Women in 1972 and 1973, and had served as Treasurer of Grace-Design United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, Vira R. Sides and Ruth R. Walker; and one brother, Odell Riley.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Leemont cemetery, Danville with the Rev. D. Scott Holcomb-McLain officiating.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. today at Wrenn Yeatts North Main Chapel.
Charlie Jennings
DANVILLE, Va. - Charlie Thomas Jennings, 85 of 108 Nor Dan Drive, died at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, August 5, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home of several years of declining health.
Born June 8, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Obie Thomas Jennings and Rosie Puckett Jennings.
He was married
Feb. 27, 1948, to Bernice Hall Jennings, who survive.
Mr. Jennings was a member and a deacon of Afton Road Primitive Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Dan River High School and Averett College. He owned and operated Danville Insurance Agency, Sanitary Disposal Company and a bookkeeping and tax service for a number of years. He was employed by Belk-Leggett as a manager of the insurance department prior to retirement. He was predeceased by two brothers, Matthew and Claire Jennings.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons and daughter-in-laws, Donald and Sharon Jennings of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. and William and Chris Jennings of Richmond, Va.; one daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and Earl Emerson, Jr. of Danville; one grandson, Edward Emerson of Danville; three granddaughters, Charly Emerson of Danville, Meredith Jennings and Sarah Jennings, both of Richmond, Va.; one step-grandson, Rodney Larch of Little Rock, Ark.; three sisters, Etta Jennings and Margaret Lunsford, both of Danville and Hattie Graham of Richmond, Va.; one brother, Robert Jennings of Baltimore, Md. and a number of nieces and nephews.

will be in Highland Burial Park.

George Poole II
BROOKNEAL, Va. - George Robert Poole II, 44, of 1223 Lynchburg Ave., died Tuesday, August 3, 1999, at his home.
Born Nov. 5, 1954, in South Boston, Va., he was the son of George Robert Poole, who survives and the late Rebecca East Poole.
He was a member of Brookneal Baptist Church and vice president of Poole Chevrolet-Pontiac, Inc.
In addition to his father of Brookneal, survivors include two sons, Michael Shane Poole of South Boston, Va., and G.R. Poole III of Brookneal; one sister, Catherine Poole-Jackson of Gladys; one half-brother, George Dudley Poole of Varina.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Brookneal Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Ward officiating. Burial will be in Wickliffe cemetery.

Mary Shavers
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Jane Shavers, 65, of 321 Barrett St., died Tuesday, August 3, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born August 24, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William Ingram and Annie Fulton Ingram.
She was married
to Shirley Shavers, who survives.
She was an employee of Corning Glass.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two foster children, Judy Williams of Danville and Tyrone Green of the residence; one adopted son, Henry Shavers; four sisters, Alma Carroway and Cora Blackmon, both of Blairs, Marie Nesmith of Danville and Mabel Wilson of Blackwood, N.J.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Jones Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Hayes McConnell officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Joseph Terry Jr.
MACON, Ga. - Joseph Hamet Terry Jr., 76, of 3234 Clairmont Ave., died Tuesday, August 3, 1999, in Macon, Ga.
Born in Java, Va., he was the son of Joseph H. Terry Sr. and Frances Hall Terry.
He was married
to Madeline Scruggs Terry, who survives.
He moved from Roanoke, Va., to Macon, for the past 31 years. He was president of Continental Trailways Bus Lines, retiring after 35 years of service. He was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Bond of Vidalia; one son, Ruben Terry of Roanoke, Va., and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Steven Greer officiating.
