Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Claiborne Whitt Jr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Claiborne Keister Whitt, Jr. 76, of 713 North Main St., died Monday, August 9, 1999, at Salem Veterans Hospital following five years of declining health, and a two-month hospital stay.

Born June 21, 1923, in Danville, he was the son of Claiborne Keister Whitt Sr. and Grace Pettigrew Whitt.

He was married Oct. 26, 1956, to Maxine Craig Whitt, who survive.

He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II. He spent most of his life in Danville. He was employed with Dan River Inc. for many years, retiring in 1985. He attended Emmanuel Wesleyan Church.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, James Robert Whitt of Danville and C. Keister Whitt III of Ringgold; five daughters, Tamara Whitt Kelly of Sanford, N.C., Sharon Whitt Robertson, Susan Whitt Doss and Cindy K. Whitt, all of Danville and Linda Whitt Adams of Ringgold; one brother, Calvin E. Whitt of Danville; one sister, Juanita W. Olverding of Richmond; and 16 grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Kendall Jenkins officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post No. 325.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Stephen Witcher

DANVILLE, Va. - Stephen W. Witcher, 34, of 208 North Point Lane, died Friday, August 6, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 22, 1965, in Danville, he was the son of Angeline Witcher, who survives.

He was of the Baptist Faith and employed by Goodwill Industries of Danville.

In addition to his mother of Chatham, survivors include three sisters Grace J. Foster of Waynesboro, Penn., Bernadette Witcher of Chatham, and Sandra L. Jones of New York, N.Y.

He was predeceased by a sister, Darcie W. Wrighton July 20, 1999.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday from Guildfield Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold E. Vann II officiating. Interment icon will be in Hillcrest Burial Park, Chatham.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at Howerton Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence of his mother, 613 North Main St., Chatham.

Andrew Anderson Sr.

CALLANDS, Va. - Andrew Anderson Sr., 67, of 649 Wyatt Farm Road, died Saturday, August 7, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born May 3, 1932, in Franklin County, he was the son of Roscoe Anderson and Sallie Swanson Anderson.

He was married to Blanche Niblett Anderson, who survives.

He worked for many years at American Furniture Company prior to his retirement.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include five sons, Andrew A. Anderson, Jr. of Martinsville, Dennis A. Anderson and Dean N. Anderson, both of Callands, Kenneth M. Anderson and Jeffrey L. Anderson, both of the residence; four sisters, Thelma Wilson of Cascade, Gladys Carter of Axton, Lucille McKenzie of Callands, and Evelyn Lewis of New Rochelle, N.Y.; three brothers, Geter Anderson of Winston Salem, N.C., Lloyd Anderson of Fayetteville, N.C. and Conrad Anderson of Eldorado, Ark; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Bethel Way of the Cross Church with Bishop Joseph Adams officiating. Burial will be in Sharon Grove Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence. Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements

Henry "H.C." Doss

GRETNA, Va. - Henry Clarence "H.C." Doss, 52, formerly of Gretna, died Monday, August 9, 1999.

Born June 17, 1947, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Octavia Haskins Doss, who survives and the late Wilsie Doss Sr.

He was a farmer.

In addition to his mother of Gretna, survivors include one daughter, Michelle Doss Moser of Blairs; two sons, Henry Daniel Doss of Gretna and Michael Doss of Dry Fork; four brothers, Linwood Doss and Wayne Doss, both of Gretna, Wilsie Doss Jr. of Chatham and Carroll Doss of Gretna; four sisters, Jean Doss of Gretna, Mozelle Doss of Penhook, Sarah Lane of Greensboro, N.C. and Sandra Hodges of Chatham; and one grandchild.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at New Bethel Church of the Brethren cemetery with the Rev. Gene Ashworth and Dr. Alvery Parr officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister, Jean Doss, 703 Henry St., Gretna.

Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.

Ephron Gilmore, Sr.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Ephron Gilmore, Sr. 74, died Friday, August 6, 1999, at Maryview Hospital in Portsmouth, Va.

He was born April 10, 1925, in Semora, N.C.

He was married to Grace Gilmore, who survives.

In addition to his wife of Chesapeake, survivors include one daughter, Brenda Gilmore of Largo, Md.; one son, Ephron Gilmore Jr.; three sisters, Sarah Medley, Nannie Garrett and Delilan Cunningham.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, Semora, N.C. Burial will be in church cemetery.

Crawford, Garrett & Burton Funeral Services, Inc., in Halifax are in charge of arrangements.

Janice Gunn

DANVILLE, Va. - Janice Carolyn Gunn, 49, of 126 Ayers St., died Saturday, August 7, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 1, 1950, in Danville, she was the daughter of Albert Roach and Elizabeth Davis.

Prior to her disability, she was employed as a computer analyst at Dr. Martin Luther King Health Center, Bronx, N.Y.

Survivors include one daughter, Crystal Gunn of Danville; seven sisters, Mary Francis Hughes of Bridgeport, Conn., Annie Ruffin, Edith Davis and Sue Davis, all of Bronx, N.Y., Beatrice Davis and Joyce Davis, both of Danville and Clarice Gunn of Lynchburg; one brother, Larry Davis of Danville; and one grandson.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Claude Gunn officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Aubrey Henderson

KEELING, Va. - Aubrey Alderson Henderson, 84, of 19596 Old Richmond Road, died Tuesday, August 10, 1999, at his home.

Born Aug. 26, 1914, in Halifax County, Va., he was the son of Harry Alderson Henderson and Lizzie Tanksley Henderson.

He was married to Margaret Davis Henderson, who survives.

He was a member of the Ingram United Church of Christ and the Woodmen of the World Camp 127.

In addition to his wife of Keeling, survivors include one daughter, Marie Henderson Davis of Blairs; two sons, Ryland Aubrey Henderson of Blairs and John Thomas Henderson of Keeling; one brother, Clarence C. Henderson of Danville; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Ingram United Church of Christ with the Rev. Herman Absher and the Rev. David Dickerson officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Ruth Millner

DANVILLE, Va. - Ruth L. Millner, 67, of 262 Winslow St., died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, at her residence.

Born Dec. 3, 1931, she was the daughter of Harry Elam.

She was married to Richard Millner Jr. who predeceased her.

She was employed as a cook at The Charcoal House Restaurant for many years.

Survivors include five daughters, Brenda Elder, Patricia Johnson and Gwendolyn White, all of Danville, Linda Patterson of Richmond and Tonja Chaney of Fredrick, Md.; one son, Richard Miller III of Durham, N.C.; one brother, Albert Elam of Akron, Ohio; four sisters, Ada Oliver and Rebecca Clark, both of Danville, Anne Lynn of New York, N.Y. and Dorothy Danner of Santa Rosa, Calif.

A funeral will be 4 p.m. today at New Hope Apostolic Church with Bishop Major Hairston officiating. Interment icon will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mildred Oakes

DRY FORK, Va. - Mildred L. Oakes, age 70, of 1241 Dry Ford Road, Dry Fork, Virginia died Monday, August 9, 1999, at the home of her daughter Vicky Miller.

Mrs. Oakes was born June 7, 1929, in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Dollie C. and Havanna Lewis. She was married to Ryland S. Oakes, Jr., who predeceased her. She was a homemaker and worker for Dewberry's Restaurant for a number of years. She was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church.

Survivors include daughter, Vicky Miller and son-in-law, R.E. of the residence, daughter Joan Yeatts and son-in-law, James of Blairs; daughter Brenda Yancey and son-in-law, Harold of Madison Heights, Va.; son Kenneth Oakes and daughter-in-law Andrea of Staunton, Va.; son Darrell Oakes and daughter-in-law Julie of Chatham; and son Harold Oakes and daughter-in-law Roxanne of Dry Fork. Also surviving are three sisters, Ruby Cundiff nd Viedell Crane, both of Dry Fork, and Edna Sheldon of Chatham; one brother, Jerry C. Lewis of Danville, and a very special friend Josephine Adams of Roxboro, N.C., fourteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, August 12, 1999, at 2:00 p.m. from the Oakland United Methodist Church by the Rev. Steve Lewis, Rev. R. Flecther Hardy, III, and Rev. James Albert. Interment icon will be in the Oakland United Methodist Church cemetery in Dry Fork, Va.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the church and at other times will be at the residence.

Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Thelma Robertson

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Thelma Robertson, of 509 Tennessee Ave., died Friday, August 6, 1999.

She was the daughter of Harrison Robertson and Judith Stephens Robertson.

Survivors include two sisters, Evelyn Robertson of Danville and Elmy "Tee" Robertson of Pleasantville, N.J.; and one brother, Willie Robertson of Danville.

A funeral will be Thursday at Mikal's Funeral Parlor, Baltic Ave., Atlantic City, N.J. Burial will be in Seaview cemetery, Marmora, N.J.

Harold Setliff

DANVILLE, Va. - Harold O. Setliff, 73, of 132 Gloucester Ave., died Tuesday, August 10, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center where he spent the past five days, after several years of declining health.

Born Nov. 30, 1925, in Danville, he was the son of George W. Setliff and Lois Ferguson Setliff.

He was married July 5, 1963, to Gray Setliff, who survives.

He served in the United States Navy as an Airman during World War II, on the United States Ship Saipan where he was a Fire Marshall. He received the American Theatre Medal, the Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Star, the Phillipine Liberation Star and the Good Conduct Medal.

He lived all of his life in Danville where he retired from the Danville Police Department where he worked as a Parking Meter Technician. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 647, as well as a member of the American Legion Post No. 1097.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Jack W. Setliff and Kenneth Setliff.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Jack Heinsohn officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Joe Wyatt

DANVILLE, Va. - Joe Henry Wyatt, 85, of 2981 Twin Arch Drive, died Tuesday afternoon, August 10, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born May 19, 1914, in Stella, Va., he was the son of James Henry Wyatt and Mattie Sue Arnold Wyatt.

He was married to Helen Aherron Wyatt, who survives.

He spent most of his life in Danville and Pittsylvania County area. He was a tractor mechanic working for Collie Equipment Company for many years, and was a member of Community Baptist Church on Iris Lane.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Doris Wyatt Austin of Yanceyville, N.C.; two sons, Bobby Joe Wyatt of Alexandria and Herman David Wyatt of Greensboro, N.C.; two sisters, Annie Mae Martin and Nancy Wyatt Hawker, both of Keeling; two brothers, Sam Wyatt of Pelham, N.C. and William E. Wyatt of West Branch, Mich.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Albert and Rev. Carlton Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
