SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Willie Fife Estes Jr., 68, of 610 Cedar Ave., died Thursday, August 12, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born April 29, 1931, in South Boston, he was the son of Willie Fife Estes Sr. and Odell McKinney Estes.
He was married
to Eunice Shelton Estes, who survives
In addition to his wife of South Boston, survivors include one daughter, Sharon Estes Vaughan of Scottsburg; one son, Willie F. "Butch" Estes III of Woodstock, Conn.; one sister, Anna E. Harrison of Newport News; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. H.V. Conner officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today and at other times at the residence and at the residence of his daughter, Sharon Estes Vaughan, 1125 Wagstaff Lane, Scottsburg.
Vester Hopkins
DANVILLE, Va. - Vester Lee Davis Hopkins, 88, formerly of 160 Parkway Drive, died Wednesday, August 11, 1999, at Riverside Health Care after being a resident since December 1997.
Born June 23, 1911, in Gretna, she was the daughter of William Riley Davis and Grace Hedrick Davis.
She was married
to Aaron E. Hopkins, who predeceased her Dec. 5, 1980.
She lived her life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County, and prior to her retirement was employed by Dan River Inc.
She was a member of Westover Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, William A. "Bill" Hopkins of Danville; two sisters, Maggie Deboe and Elsie King, both of Danville; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Leroy Clack officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her son, 605 Mowbray Arch, Danville.

James Jeffries
DANVILLE, Va. - James W. Jeffries, 78, of 426 Hughes St., died Saturday, August 7, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 10, 1921, in Danville, he was the son of James W. Jeffries Sr., and Gladys Griffin Jeffries.
He was married
to Frankie B. Jeffries, who predeceased him April 13, 1970, and later to Naomi Hubbard Jeffries, who survives.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as the Sexton at College Park Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include one daughter, Johnsie Jeffries of the residence; five sons, James Jeffries III of Bronx, N.Y., Willie Ed Jeffries of Austin, Texas, Allen B. Jeffries of New Haven, Conn., Barton L. Jeffries of Marquett, Mich., and Anthony S. Jeffries of Danville.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Henry Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post No. 1097.

Ruby Lowe
DANVILLE, Va. - Ruby Gunnell Lowe, 66, of 505 Franklin Turnpike, died Wednesday, August 11, 1999, at her residence.
Born August 21, 1932, in Danville, she was the daughter of John T. Gunnell and Verna Mae Anderson.
She was married
to Larry F. Lowe, who predeceased her.
She lived her entire life in the Danville area where she was a real estate agent and office manager at Eastern Panel Corp. until retirement.
She was a charter member of Christian Heritage Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Doris L. Henderson and Vandora Holt, both of Danville; one sister, Lorainn Bowden of Richmond; and one grandchild.
She was predeceased by one brother, Willard Gunnell.
A graveside service will be 10 a.m. today at Danville Memorial Gardens with Dr. James Gardner officiating.

John Petty
NATHALIE, Va. - John Ben Petty, 63, of 416 Leda Grove Road, died Wednesday, August 11, 1999, in Halifax Regional Hospital, South Boston.
Born Oct. 12, 1935, in Halifax County, he was the son of Carrington Petty and Annie Ferrell Petty.
He was married
to Chlore G. Petty, who survives.
He was a member of Elkhorn Baptist Church, and worked for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company for several years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Annie P. Wilson of Washington, Sandra L. Jones of Chatham, Romaine L. Petty of Blairs; four sons, Frankie T. Moore of Lynchburg, Ben L. Petty and Micheal Collins, both of Danville, and Rontrell L. Petty of Blairs; three stepchildren, Minister Rena Robinson of Danville, Kenneth Glass of Gretna, and Joyce L. Farmer of Greensboro, N.C.; five brothers, James H. Petty of Chatham, Arthur Lee Petty of Gretna, Carrington Petty Jr. of Vernon Hill, Otis Petty Sr. of Java, Henry W. Petty of Nathalie; five sisters, Roberta Younger, Sallie P. Lewis and Bessie Barley, all of Java, Florence Davis of Newark, N.J. and Emma Sims of Nathalie; and nine grandchildren.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Elkhorn Baptist Church with Dr. Calvin Motley officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Wesley Stamps
RINGGOLD, Va. - Wesley Edward Stamps, 73, of 301 Gun Garland Road, died Monday, August 9, 1999, at 112 Cardwell St., Danville.
Born Sept. 25, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Warner Stamps and Mattie Sue Fitzgerald Stamps.
He was married
to Evelyn Stamps, who predeceased him.
He was employed with Dan River Inc. as a truck driver for many years and was a member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Deloris S. Strange of Ringgold, Peggy Knight of Irvington, N.J., Alice Stamps and Mattie Stephens, both of Danville; three sons, Jackie Stamps, Ronald Stamps and Ervin Stamps, all of Ringgold; two sisters, Dorothy Lea of Danville and Bertha Brandon of Ringgold; one brother, Warner W. Stamps of Ringgold; 19 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m today at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Ringgold with the Rev. Howard Graves officiating.
Burial will be in church cemetery with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post No. 1097.

James Thornton III
DANVILLE, Va. - James Christopher Thornton III, of 603 Tamworth Drive, died Thursday afternoon, August 12, 1999, at his residence after seven months of declining health.
Born June 19, 1934, in Danville, he was the son of James C. Thornton Jr. and Ada Cates Thornton.
He was married
to Dorothy Moore Thornton, who predeceased him July 28, 1998.
He spent most of his life in Danville where he was employed as a crane operator for John W. Daniel for 39 years.
Survivors include three sons, James C. Thornton IV, Richard T. Thornton, and Ronnie K. Thornton, all of Danville; two daughters, Debra T. Pierce of Danville and Lisa T. Smith of High Point, N.C.; two sisters, Lillian T. Hardy and Julia T. Carter, both of Danville; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one sister, Ann T. Winn.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Diane Adkins
DANVILLE, Va. - Diane Thompson Adkins, 45, of 2008 Orphanage Road died suddenly Friday morning, August 13, 1999, in the Danville Regional Medical Center emergency room after becoming sick at home.
Born Oct. 19, 1953, in Danville, she was the daughter of Douglas Thompson and Ruth Scott Thompson.
She was married
to William Lewis Adkins, who survive.
She made her home in Pittsylvania County for the past 23 years. She worked as a bank teller for Peoples National Bank on Westover Drive, and was of the Methodist faith.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Christina Adkins of the residence.
A funeral will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Robertson officiating. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Marvin Crumpton
DANVILLE, Va. - Marvin Leonard Crumpton, 89, formerly of 153 Garden Grove St., died Friday, August 13, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after residing at Piney Forest Health Care Center for the past year before entering the hospital.
Born Sept. 21, 1909, in Caswell County, N.C., he was the son of Joseph L. Crumpton and Sallie Belle Cook Crumpton.
He was married
Dec. 24, 1929, to Madie Scearce Crumpton, who died Nov. 5, 1992.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he worked in the maintenance department of Dan River Inc. for 41 years before retiring in 1974. He was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon and member of the Young at Heart Club at the church. He was also a member of the Dan River Retired Employees Club.
Survivors include three sons, Edward Earl Crumpton and Danny Ray Crumpton, both of Danville, and Gary Leonard Crumpton of Richmond; one daughter, Margie Long of Danville; three grandchildren and one great grandchild.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. J. Richard Markham officiating.

Massie Ferguson
GRETNA, Va. - Beverly Massie Ferguson, age 91, of 404 Franklin Blvd., Gretna, died Thursday, August 12, 1999, in Veterans Medical Center, Salem, Va.
Born September 14, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Charles Ross Ferguson and Florence Massie Ferguson.
Mr. Ferguson was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and was a member of Climax Ruritan Club. He was a veteran educator in Oklahoma and Wyoming before becoming a Principal of schools in Pittsylvania County, where he retired after many years of service. He was an Army Veteran of World War II.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Alice S. Ferguson.
He is survived by his wife, Alease L. Ferguson of the residence, grandchildren Jen and Steve Gerrick; great-grandchildren, Gracie and Jack; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Sunday, August 15, 1999, at Colbert-Moran Chapel by the Rev. Andy Ferguson and Tom Ferguson. Interment
will follow in Greenfield Baptist Church cemetery.

Jack Hudgins Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Jack H. Hudgins Sr., 71, of 131 Mary Miles Drive, died Thursday, August 12, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center where he had been for two days.
Born June 30, 1928, in Richmond, he was the son of Howard Walker Hudgins and Elizabeth Bell Hudgins.
He was married
May 19, 1956, to Jean Hankins Hudgins, who survives.
He was a veteran serving in the United States Army in the Military Police.
He was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church where he served as deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the Sertoma Club.
He lived most of his life in Danville. He retired in 1990 after 35 years as part owner of Danville Office Supply Company.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Jack H. Hudgins Jr. of Ringgold; one daughter, Elizabeth Hudgins Wilson of Valdosta, Ga.; one brother, Robert W. Hudgins of Richmond; one sister, Mary Anne H. Mattox of Richmond; and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Wrenn Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Lee Ellison and the Rev. Steve Carlton officiating. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park.
