Olna Medlock
DANVILLE, Va. - Olna W. Medlock, 91, formerly of Bachelors Hall, died Thursday, August 12, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center after several years of declining health.
Born February 5, 1908, in Arkansas, he was the son of William Medlock and Julia Stone Medlock.
He was married
to Dora Riddle Medlock, who died in September 1991.
Most of his life was spent in the Bachelors Hall community. He was employed by Dan River Inc. in No. 2 Inspection until he retired. He was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Axton.
Survivors include one daughter, Lillian Dalton of Cascade; three nieces and one nephew; 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by one daughter, Ruth Davis; and two sons, Garland Mitchell and Reid Mitchell.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Dale Darley officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive 7-8:30 p.m. today at the chapel and at other times at the residence of his granddaughter, Kelly Matthews, 336 Duncan Drive, State Road 878, Danville.
Ira Sparrow
WALDORF, Md. - Ira Troy Sparrow, 69, died Friday, August 13, 1999, at La Plata, Civista Medical Center.
Born May 29, 1930, in Danville, Va., he was the son of Charles Day Sparrow and Lucy Wimbish Hyler.
He was married
to Billie J. Sparrow, who survives.
He was a carpenter. He was of the Methodist faith.
In addition to his wife of Waldorf, survivors include two sons, Ira C. Sparrow of Waldorf and Timothy T. Sparrow of Baltimore; one sister, Alease Eastwood of Hampton, Va.; one brother, Douglas P. Sparrow of Prince Frederick; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 10 a.m. Monday at St. Piney Parish in Waldorf.
A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday in Highland Burial Park in Danville, Va., with the Rev. F. Bradley Peyton officiating.
The family will receive friends Sunday 6-8 p.m. at the church.

Diane Adkins
DANVILLE, Va. - Diane Thompson Adkins, 45, of 2008 Orphanage Road died suddenly Friday morning, August 13, 1999, in the Danville Regional Medical Center emergency room after becoming sick at home.
Born Oct. 19, 1953, in Danville, she was the daughter of Douglas Thompson and Ruth Scott Thompson.
She was married
to William Lewis Adkins, who survive.
She made her home in Pittsylvania County for the past 23 years. She worked as a bank teller for Peoples National Bank on Westover Drive, and was of the Methodist faith.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Christina Adkins of the residence.
A funeral will be held 4 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Robertson officiating. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Marvin Crumpton
DANVILLE, Va. - Marvin Leonard Crumpton, 89, formerly of 153 Garden Grove St., died Friday, August 13, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after residing at Piney Forest Health Care Center for the past year before entering the hospital.
Born Sept. 21, 1909, in Caswell County, N.C., he was the son of Joseph L. Crumpton and Sallie Belle Cook Crumpton.
He was married
Dec. 24, 1929, to Madie Scearce Crumpton, who died Nov. 5, 1992.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he worked in the maintenance department of Dan River Inc. for 41 years before retiring in 1974. He was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon and member of the Young at Heart Club at the church. He was also a member of the Dan River Retired Employees Club.
Survivors include three sons, Edward Earl Crumpton and Danny Ray Crumpton, both of Danville, and Gary Leonard Crumpton of Richmond; one daughter, Margie Long of Danville; three grandchildren and one great grandchild.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. J. Richard Markham officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home.
Joe Farmer Jr.
JAVA, Va. - Joe Hugh "Pete" Farmer Jr., 74, of 13076 Chatham Road, died Friday, August 13, 1999, at his home.
Born on August 12, 1925 in Halifax County, he was the son of Joe Hugh Farmer and Molly McGregor Farmer.
He was married
to Sally R. Farmer.
He was a member of the County Line Baptist Church and a veteran of World War II.
He is survived by one daughter, Terrie F. Spell of South Boston; two sisters, Ella Louise Collins and Ruby Tate, both of Richmond and one grandson.
He was predeceased by one brother, Raymond T. Farmer.
The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. today at the County Line Baptist Church with the Rev. Joseph Cantrell officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter at 1606 Wilborn Ave. in South Boston.

Robert Jones
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Lee Jones, 69, of 873 Valley St., died Wednesday, Aug.
11, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 23, 1929, in Danville, he was the son of Melvin Jones and Rachael Coleman Jones.
He was a shift worker for DIMON Group and a member of St. James Baptist Church.
He is survived by one son, Ronnell Rodgers of Danville; two brothers, Elijah "Gillie" Jones Sr. of Danville and Roosevelt Jones of Philadelphia and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the Cunningham and Hughes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. J.P. Griffith Jr. officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his son at 235 Ross Street. Interment
will be at Oak Hill cemetery.
Joyce Mayo
HALIFAX, Va. - Joyce Blair Martin Mayo, 65, of 3120 H.P. Anderson Road in Halifax County died Friday, August 13, 1999 at the Woodview.
Born on Aug. 3, 1934, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Bruce Dennis Martin and Pearl Owen Martin.
She was married
to W. Archie Mayo.
She was a member of the Winns Creek Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for more than 20 years.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by one son, Bruce Mayo of Nathalie and one sister, Frances Hudgins of Richmond.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Winns Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Williams and Rev. Richard Welch officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Doris Pennington
DANVILLE, Va. - Doris Exum Pennington, 76, of 4544 Westover Drive died Wednesday, August 11, 1999 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 15, 1923 in Danville, she was the daughter of Fletcher James Exum and Eva Mae Motley Exum.
She lived her entire life in Danville. She was retired from Dan River Inc. where she worked as a smash hand in No. 4-B Wave.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Douglas Penninton of the residence; two daughters, Patricia Ann Lakey and Doris Marie Adams, both of Danville; one grandson, William Harrison "Spud" Lakey II of Danville and one great-grandchild, William Harrison "Trey" Lakey III, also of Danville.
A private service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Mausoleum of Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. William Blalock officiating.
Interment will be at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Vickie Rose
DANVILLE, Va. - Vickie Diane Davis Rose, 27, of 316 Richmond Ave., died Saturday, August 14, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after suffering a seizure Friday morning.
Born July 14, 1972, in Danville, she was the daughter of R.C. Davis and Linda Adkins Davis, both of whom survive and live in Ringgold.
She was married
to Connie Raymond Rose, who survives.
She spent most of her life in Danvile. She was of the Baptist faith. She was predeceased by her sister, Sandra Kay Davis, and her paternal grandmother, Thelma Gilbert Adams.
In addition to her husband of the residence and her parents of Ringgold, she is survived by one son, Justin Daniel Hartness of the residence; one daughter, Marlena Diane Hartness of the residence; one stepson, Justin Nathaniel Rose of the residence; two stepdaughters, Vanessa Rose and Melissa Rose, both of Danville; one brother, Russell Lee Davis of Danville; and her maternal grandparents, Herman and Lillian Josey of Danville.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Lee VonEime Jr. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her parents, 3192 Cedar Road, Ringgold.
Justin Walker
ALTON, Va. - Justin Thomas Walker, 16, of 1006 Evans Trail, died Sunday, August 15, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Feb. 9, 1983, in Halifax County, he was the son of Jan Walker and Pamela Hughes Walker, both survive.
He was a member of Centerville Baptist Church. He was a student at Halifax County High School where he was a member of the JV baseball team.
He also played in the South Boston Dixie Baseball League where he was on the all-star teams for several years.
In addition to his parents of Alton, survivors include one sister, BreeAnn D. Walker of Alton; two brothers, Christopher J. Walker of South Boston, and Nicholas S. Walker of Alton; maternal grandfather, Jimmie Hughes of Cumberland; paternal grandfather Nathan Walker of South Boston; and maternal great-grandmother Ethel Hughes of Nathalie.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Centerville Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Saunders officiating. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
