James Davidson Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - James Richard Davidson Jr., 70, of 520 Iris Lane, died Monday, August 16, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home where he had been a patient for 11 months of declining health. He also resided in the Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center for 10 months.
He had been in declining health since 1982.
Born Sept. 29, 1928, in Danville, he was the son of James R. Davidson Sr. and Ethel Mann Davidson.
He was married
Aug. 29, 1948, to Mildred Eaton Davidson, who survives.
He lived his life in the Danville area. Prior to his retirement he was employed with the city of Danville as plant operator for the Brantley Steam Plant for 31 years until its closing. He was former member of Mount Hermon Volunteer Fire Department, Danville Life Saving Crew and a member of Ramah Lodge No. 70, where he was a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was an amateur radio operator since 1964, with the call sign N4DBX, and and a member of First Methodist Temple.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four sons, James Richard Davidson III of Roanoke, Charles Wesley Davidson of Axton, Timothy Ray Davidson of Keeling and Carroll Lee Davidson of Danville; 2 grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Gary Briden officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Ramah Lodge No. 70.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Bertha Edmonds
WASHINGTON - Bertha M. Edmonds, 84, of 3322 14th St. N.W., died Sunday, August 8, 1999, at Howard Medical Center.
Born July 12, 1915, he was the son of Henry Anderson and Bessie Ferrell Anderson.
He attended Mountain Grove Baptist Church in Halifax, Va., for many years. She moved to Washington, in 1946, and became a member of Bibleway Temple.
Survivors include two sisters, Adell C. Chaney of Danville, and Ruby Egerton of Baltimore. A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Bibleway Temple in Washington, with the Bishop James Silver officiating.
The family will receive friends 10-11 a.m. Friday at the church.
James Gauldin
COLLINSVILLE, Va. - James Harden "Bubba" Gauldin, 61, of 145 Turner Road, died Tuesday, August 17, 1999, at his residence.
Born Feb. 13, 1938, in Henry County, he was the son of James C. Gauldin and Lizzie Moxley Gauldin.
He was married
to Sally Pruitt Gauldin, who survives.
He was an employee of Pulaski Furniture Co., for 22 years.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four daughters, Patricia Hall of Ridgeway, Lisa McMillan of Martinsville, Marianne Goins of Collinsville and Debbie Adkins of Spencer; one son, Raymond L. Gauldin of Ridgeway; two sisters, Dorothy Owens of Ringgold and Lulu Belle Stump of Axton; and six grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Community Funeral Service Chapel of Ridgeway with the Rev. Jr. Shelton officiating.
Interment will be at the Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends today 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Rev. Claude Graham
DANVILLE, Va. - Rev. Claude Raymond Graham, 80, formerly of 158 Old Greensboro Road, died Tuesday afternoon, August 17, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home where he resided for three years.
Born May 16, 1919, in Roanoke County, he was the son of Elbert William Graham and Telitha Fralin Graham.
He was married
Sept. 12, 1946, to Dorothy Earles Graham, who predeceased him.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy Air Force during World War II.
He spent most of his life in Danville where he was a watchmaker before entering the ministry.
He graduated from Wake Forest College, Class of 1955, and former board member of Dan River Baptist Association, and served as administrative assistant at Patrick Henry Boys Home at Brookneal.
He served in the ministry for 45 years.
He last served at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Halifax County where he was a member and previously served at Second Baptist Church in South Boston.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by two sisters Kathleen Carter and Yevlee Mayhew, and one brother, Herman Graham.
Survivors include one sister, Eva Owen of Danville; and two brothers, Walter Graham of Suffolk, and Lewis Graham of Danville.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Alden Hicks and the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment
will be in Oakwood cemetery, Martinsville.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of his niece, Trudi and Jerry Griffin, 189 Pineview Drive, Ringgold.
Cody Austin Hill
DANVILLE, Va. - Cody Austin Hill, infant, of 136 Cottonwood Lane, died 6:51 p.m. Friday, August 13, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
He was the son of Darin Andrew Hill and JoAnn Ricketts Hill, who survive.
In addition to his parents, survivors include one brother, Ryan Andrew Hill of the residence; paternal grandparents, Ronald and Judy Hill of Danville; and maternal grandparents, Danny and Nancye Ricketts of Danville.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Paul Ricketts officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Bertha Hubbard
DANVILLE, Va. - Bertha D. Hubbard, 94,of 147 Melbourne Cirlce, died Sunday, August 15, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 24, 1904, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of James Daniel and Rosa Doons Daniel.
She was married
to James Lossie Hubbard Sr., who predeceased her.
She was a shift worker with Dibrell Brothers Tobacco Company. She was a member of Loyal Baptist Church, and a member of Buds of Unity No. 429, and the Golden Age Club.
Survivors include one son, Lossie Hubbard Jr. of Danville; two daughters, Lorrell H. Lovelace and Naomi Jeffries, both of Danville; two sisters, Sophie Bethel of Glendale, Ariz. and Mary West of Philadelphia.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Loyal Baptist Church with the Rev. Lovelle A. Maxwell Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery
A viewing will be 4-8 p.m. today at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.

Robert King
MECHANICSVILLE, Va. - Robert Joseph King, died Tuesday, August 17, 1999.
He was married
to Carolyn L. King.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Robert J. King, Jr. and Paul A. King; one daughter, Sharon K. Dodd; two sisters, Patricia K. Martin of Danville, and Roberta K. McGuire of Salem; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Bennett Funeral Home Chapel, Mechanicsville, 8014 Lee David Road. A private burial will be in Forest Lawn.

Nella Martin
DANVILLE, Va. - Nella Gatewood Martin, 102, of 2526 N. Main St., died Tuesday, August 17, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Nursing Home where she has lived since 1989. She has been in declining health for four years.
Born Oct. 9, 1896, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Calvin Gatewood and Ella Margaret Coleman Gatewood.
She married
Nov. 7, 1925, to James Thurman Martin, who predeceased her July 7, 1976.
She was of the Methodist faith.
She lived in Kenbridge, before moving to Danville.
She was a homemaker, an active member of the Daughter's of the American Revolution, and the United Daughter's of the Confederacy.
Survivors include one daughter, Margaret Martin Tingle of Johnson City, Tenn.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Tom Wright officiating.

Hattie Moorman
CRYSTAL HILL, Va. - Hattie Chandler Moorman, 87, died Monday, August 16, 1999, at her residence.
Born March 12, 1912, in Halifax County.
Survivors include two daughters, Helen Coles of Charlottesville, and Jean Cousins of Clover; four sons, Clinton Moorman of Nathalie, Howard Moorman and Theodore Moorman, both of Crystal Hill, and Glen Moorman of Alexandria; four sisters, Bertha Womack and Louise Miller, both of South Boston, Lucille Barksdale of Brigeport, Conn. and Elizabeth Fallen of Albany, N.Y.
A memorial service will be noon Friday at Crawford, Garrett and Burton Funeral Home Chapel in Halifax.
Dr. K. E. Overcash
DANVILLE, Va. - Dr. Kelly Ennis "Ken" Overcash, 59, 184 Chickadee Road, died Tuesday morning, August 17, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 9, 1940, in Southern Pines, N.C., he was the son of Dr. William Earl Overcash and Marjorie Skinner Overcash, who survive.
He married
Linda Williamson Overcash, who also survive.
He was a graduate of George Washington High School, Hampton Sydney University of Virginia Medical School, and Residency at Medical University of South Carolina at Charleston. For two years, he was a flight surgeon in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.
He returned to Danville in 1972, joining Dr. Milton Greenberg in the practice of otolaryngology.
At the time of his death, he was an associate with Danville Ear Nose & Throat Associates.
He was a member of AMA, was past president of the medical staff of Danville Regional Medical Center, member of Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, where he had served on the vestry.
In addition to his mother of Danville and wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Kelly Overcash Byrne and Katherine Overcash Wood, both of Arizona, and Elizabeth Ashley Overcash Schoolor of Fairfax; three sons, Richard Clifton Webb of Columbia, S.C., Anthony Christopher Webb and James Ryan Webb, both of Danville; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be noon today from Episcopal Church of the Epiphany with the Father James Mathieson officiating.

Francis Aiken
DANVILLE, Va. - Francis James Aiken, of 120 Holbrook Ave., died Thursday, August 19, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 29, 1910, in Edgefield, S.C., he was the son of Henry H. Aiken and Sarah Elizabeth McElveen Aiken.
He was first married
to Evelyn Byers Aiken, who predeceased him, and later married
Fannie Turner Aiken, who survives.
He attended Furman University and had a long career in textile manufacturing. In 1972, he founded Southeastern Textile Machinery, Inc. and retired as chairman of the board.
He served in many civic organizations including United Fund, Rotary and the YMCA.
He was a life member and past master of the Judson Lodge No. 319 AFM, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Masons for over 50 years.
He was a member of the Hejaz Temple, Greensville, S.C., Nobles of the Majestic Shrine.
He was a member of North Main Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, William Robert Aiken of Anderson, S.C.; two daughters, Barbara Anne Hale and Frances Aiken Martti, both of Danville; two sons, Thomas H. Aiken and Daniel A. Aiken, both of Danville; one brother, H. Ralph Aiken of Simpsonville, S.C.; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, Francis James Aiken Jr. and one grandchild.
A funeral will be 4 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Heinsohn officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
