Margie Davis

DANVILLE, Va. - Margie Pruett Davis, 91, formerly of Holiday Village on Courtland Street, died Friday, August 20, 1999, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home, where she has lived for over two years.

She has been in declining health for the past three years of declining health.

Born June 18, 1905, in Halifax County, he was the son of James Henry Pruett and Semora Bane Pruett.

She was married Feb. 15, 1930, to Robert Lewis Davis who predeceased her Feb. 6, 1965.

She lived all her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville.

She retired from Roman Eagle Meemorial Home where she worked as a Nurses Aide for over 10 years. She was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Pauline D. Bohannon of Danville and Catherine D. Hall of Warner Robins, Ga.; one son, Robert "Bob" Neal Davis of Danville; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Cecil Coates officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her son, 3700 Vandola Road.

Ercell Gilbert

DANVILLE, Va. - Carmon Ercell "Johnny" Gilbert, of Keeling, died Wednesday, August 18, 1999.

Born June 22, 1912, in Keeling, he was the son of Ramey Grayson Gilbert and Bessie White Gilbert.

He was predeceased by his wife, Frances Mays Gilbert.

Mr. Gilbert served in the United States Army 3344 Quartermaster Corp. Division 23, Trucking Company, during World War II, and prior to his retirement he had been employed in building construction. He was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church and the Men's Sunday School Class.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was also predeceased by his sister, Clarice H. Gilbert.

He is survived by his stepdaugter, Peggy McDowell Guill and her husband, Thomas L. Guill of Keeling, his sister, Delma Gilbert Turpin and her husband, George P. Turpin Jr. of Lynchburg, a special friend and caretaker, Mrs. Virginia Cox, other friends and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 21, 1999, 2 p.m. at Townes Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Tom Erwin will be conducting the services. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Gladys Hodnett

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Gladys Hardy Hodnett, 96, of 819 Grove Ave., died Friday, August 20, 1999.

She was married to Joseph Wesley Hodnett Sr., who predeceased her in 1964.

For many years she was head of the alterations department at Leggett's Department Store.

Survivors include two daughters, Juanita H. Chandler of Richmond and Jacqueline Chandler Sziefert of Punta Gorda, Fla.; one step-daughter, Gladwyne H. Peterson; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son, Joseph Wesley Hodnett, Jr.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Powell Funeral Home. Burial will be in Hardy Family cemetery at Keeling.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the residence.

Roseanna Lumpkin

DANVILLE, Va. - Roseanna Walton Lumpkin, 74, of 114 Apt. 9, Sedgefield Court, died Tuesday, August 17, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 14, 1924, she was the daughter of Howard Walton and Matilda Poole Walton. She was the stepdaughter of Byrdia Walton, who survives.

She was married to Otha Frank Lumpkin, who predeceased her.

She worked as a cook for many years prior to her retirement.

In addition to her stepmother, survivors include one son, Ronald L. Walton Sr. of Pousan, Korea; one daughter, Bettie Collins of Danvillle; one sister, Veronia W. Farmer of Danville; one brother, Lacoma Walton of Danville; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Bennett Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Clarence Hairston Jr., officiating. Burial will be in Fultz cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Fisher and Watkins is in charge of arrangements.

Willie "Jack" Soyars

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Willie "Jack" Soyars Soyars, 90, of 297 Duncan Drive, died Thursday, August 19, 1999, at Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center, Martinsville, after 10 years of declining health and a five- year stay at the nursing home.

Born Aug. 16, 1909, in the Bachelors Hall community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charles Keen Soyars and Ida Shumate Soyars.

She was married August 3, 1926, to Lacy Jefferson Soyars who died May 5, 1977.

She made her home in the Bachelors Hall community of Pittsylvania County, all of her life where she was a homemaker and a member of Vandola Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Louise Soyars Dodd of Bachelors Hall; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by one daughter, Helen Soyars Scearce, and two sons, Thomas Soyars and Jeff Soyars; and one sister, Lillian Soyars.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Leroy Clack officiating.

Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Robert Walters

RINGGOLD, Va. - Robert Lee Walters, 57, of 2946 Tom Fork Road, died Wednesday, August 18, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born June 16, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Frank Walters and Eullam Carter Walters.

He was employed at Wise-Hundley for many years.

He was married to Gertrude Wilson Walters, who predeceased him.

Survivors include one daughter, Karen Henderson of Danville; two sons, Derrick Wilson of Ringgold and Larry Walters of Danville; one sister, Barbara Walters of Danville; one brother L.C. Walters of Danville.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Howard Graves officiating.

Burial will be in church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Jeanette Fox

CHATHAM, Va. - Jeannette Cooper Fox, 71, of 360 Marion Road, died August 21, 1999, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 7, 1927 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Luther Ernest Cooper and Coneva Adkins Cooper.

She was a member of Oak Ridge Christian Church.

Survivors include her husband E.T. Fox of the residence; one daughter, Judith M. Dunwody of Hudson, Fl.; one brother, Donald Cooper of Danville; and one granddaughter.

She was predeceased by one sister, Joan C. Cole.

A graveside service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Highland Burial Park by J.D. Hunt III, Minister and Curtis English.

The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Scott Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Ruby Fox

CHATHAM, Va. - Ruby Adkins Fox, 90, of 2252 Callands Rd., died August 20, 1999, at the Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born April 28, 1909 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William O.T. Adkins and Alpha Parsons Adkins.

She was married to Thomas Bernard Fox who predeceased her.

She was a member of Weal Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Ruth F. Watson of Chatham, and Betsy F. Riddle of Wichita, Ks.; two sisters, Helen A. George of Raleigh, N.C., and Gladys A. Gentry of Roxboro, N.C.; three grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Scott Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J. Haywood Alcorn officiating. Interment icon will be in the Fox family cementery.

The family will receive friends from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Kitty Wright Garrett

DANVILLE, Va. - Kitty Wright Garrett, 88, died Saturday, August 21, 1999, after several years of declining health.

Born on March 28, 1911 in Henry County, she was the daughter of Lewis Adams Wright and Sallie Toler Dickinson Wright.

She was married to Edward Winston Garrett who predeceased her in January 1962.

She lived most of her life in Danville and she retired from Dan River Inc. in 1977.

She was a member of the West End Christian Church and the Dan River Retired Employees Club.

Survivors include two sons, Wright Lanier Garrett of Danville, and Dr. Lloyd Bernard Garrett of Yorktown; one sister, Roslyn W. Garrett of Callands; and five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. June Hughes officiating.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her son, Wright Lanier Garrett at 126 Acorn Lane.
