BRONX, N.Y. - Annie Elizabeth Pettie Harris, 68, of Bronx N.Y., formerly of Martinsville, Va., died August 17, 1999.
Born October 29, 1930 in Henry County, she was the daughter of Simon Colbert Pettie Sr. and Iona Hairston Pettie.
She was married
to Joseph Harris II, who predeceases her.
She was a member of Bronx S.D.A. Church and was in the Children's Sabbath School classes, and taught in vacation Bible school.
Survivors include three daughters, Rhonda Reid of the Bronx, Sharon Harris of New Jersey, and Cornelia Harris of Knoxville, Tn.; four sons, Carlton Reid of Danville, Va., Joseph Harris, Jeffery Harris, and Ronald Harris, all of the Bronx; four brothers, Simon Colbert Pettie Jr. of Martinsville, Va., Henry Pettie of North Carolina, Elder Ronald Pettie of Eden, N.C., and Conway Pettie of Connecticut; five sisters, Sheila Pettie, Millie Walker and Vernetta Pettie, all of the Bronx, Zenola Owens of Danville, Va., and Charmaine Jones of Connecticut; 18 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in Carver Memorial Gardens.
Stanfield-Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
William Phillips
VENICE, Fla. - William R. "Buck" Phillips, 76, died August 20, 1999.
He was born on April 2, 1923, in Roanoke Virginia.
He was retired from transportation, and was a member of the American Legion, Post 159, Venice, Fl.; life member of the Elks Club, Venice, Fl.; and life member of the Traffic Club, Baltimore.
He was a veteran of the Army Air Force in WW II serving 35 missions and was in the 384th Bomb Group, 545 Squadron.
Survivors include his wife, Doris of the residence; one daughter, Caryl Jewell, of Mercerville, N.J.; one son, Wayne S. Phillips, of Baldwin, Md.; and one brother Frank C. Phillips, of Scottsdale, Az.; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ewing Funeral Home in Venice, Fl..
Willie "Jack" Soyars
MARTINSVILLE, Va. -Willie "Jack" Soyars Soyars, 90, of 297 Duncan Drive, died Thursday, August 19, 1999, at Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center, Martinsville, after 10 years of declining health and a five- year stay at the nursing home.
Born Aug. 16, 1909, in the Bachelors Hall community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charles Keen Soyars and Ida Shumate Soyars.
She was married
August 3, 1926, to Lacy Jefferson Soyars who died May 5, 1977.
She made her home in the Bachelors Hall community of Pittsylvania County, all of her life where she was a homemaker and a member of Vandola Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Louise Soyars Dodd of Bachelors Hall; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Helen Soyars Scearce, and two sons, Thomas Soyars and Jeff Soyars; and one sister, Lillian Soyars.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Leroy Clack officiating.
Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Carol Tolley Worley
RINGGOLD, Va. - Carol Tolley Worley, 33, of 280 Milton Hwy., Lot 11, died Saturday, August 21, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born August 13, 1966 in Danville, she was the daughter of Nancy Hill Revis and John Tolley; and the step-daughter of Frank Hill.
She lived most of her life in the Danville area and worked at the Plaza Restaurant and Winn-Dixie supermarket.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her mother and father and her step-father, Frank Hill; two daughters, Destiny Nichole Eldridge, and Brandy Carol Eldridge, both of Danville; a sister, Kristie Michelle Powell of Danville; and grandparents, Elsie and William Pyrtle, of Danville.
She was predeceased by a borther, John Lee Tolley.
A funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. William Blalock officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the residence of her mother at 155 James Road.
Louise Wright
DANVILLE, Va. - Louise Cora Wright, 91, of 238 Ross St., died Thursday, August 19,1999, at the Stratford Health Center.
Born Jan. 3, 1908 in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Robert Bradshaw and Cora Bradshaw.
She was married
to Henry Wright who predeceased her.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was the last survivor of her immediate family.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Wright and Kirby Wright, both of Danville; and one adopted son, Milton Stowe of High Point, N.C.
A funeral will be held Monday at 3 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Serenus Churn officiating.
Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cementery.
The family will receive friends at the home of her son, Kirby Wright at 114 Fairlawn Drive.

Harris Burton
DANVILLE, Va. - Harris M. Burton, 56, of 101 Lorillard Circle, died Sunday, August 22, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 2, 1943, in Halifax County, he was the son of Walter Macon Burton and Thurva Sharp Burton.
He lived in the Danville area since 1982. He was employed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in the curing department.
He was a member of Ingram United Church of Christ.
Survivors include one son, David W. Burton of Milton, N.C.; two daughters, Kimberly B. Young of Danville and Heather L. Burton of Greensboro, N.C.; two brothers, Robert B. Burton of Blanch, N.C., and Bennie Wayne Burton of Halifax; two sisters, Evelyn B. Lloyd of Liberty, N.C., and Vera Gay Burton of Lynchburg.
He was predeceased by one brother, Clarence B. Burton.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Michael Pressley officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and at other time at the residence.
Octavis Clark
DANVILLE, Va. - Octavis Clark, 83, of 73 Valley St., died Wednesday, August 18, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston.
Born Aug. 10, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Morris and Danah Clark.
She was employed with Bassett Furniture Company for many years prior to her retirement.
She is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. She was the last surviving family member of her generation.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home with the Rev. Earnest Cannon officiating. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Baptist Church cemetery.
Ruby Fox
CHATHAM, Va. - Ruby Adkins Fox, 90, of 2252 Callands Rd., died August 20, 1999, at the Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born April 28, 1909 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William O.T. Adkins and Alpha Parsons Adkins.
She was married
to Thomas Bernard Fox, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Weal Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Ruth F. Watson of Chatham, and Betsy F. Riddle of Wichita, Ks.; two sisters, Helen A. George of Raleigh, N.C., and Gladys A. Gentry of Roxboro, N.C.; three grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Scott Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J. Haywood Alcorn officiating. Interment
will be in the Fox family cementery.

Kitty Wright Garrett
DANVILLE, Va. - Kitty Wright Garrett, 88, died Saturday, August 21, 1999, after several years of declining health.
Born on March 28, 1911 in Henry County, she was the daughter of Lewis Adams Wright and Sallie Toler Dickinson Wright.
She was married
to Edward Winston Garrett who predeceased her in January 1962.
She lived most of her life in Danville and she retired from Dan River Inc. in 1977. She was a member of the West End Christian Church and the Dan River Retired Employees Club.
Survivors include two sons, Wright Lanier Garrett of Danville, and Dr. Lloyd Bernard Garrett of Yorktown; one sister, Roslyn W. Garrett of Callands; and five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. June Hughes officiating.
The family will receive friends today from 7-8:30 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her son, Wright Lanier Garrett at 121 Acorn Lane.
Rev. Gerald Schelling
COLLINSVILLE, Va. - The Rev. Gerald Parke Schelling, 77, of 175 Alma Blvd., died Sunday, August 22, 1999, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville.
Born Oct. 3, 1921, in Lancaster Pa., he was the son of Thomas Parke Schelling and Catherine Seachrist Schelling.
He was married
to Patsy Gehman Schelling.
He was the pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Rocky Mount for 11 years.
After attending Lancaster, Pa. Bible College, he pastored Fellowship Baptist Church in Wythville for five years, Wheaton Baptist Church in Wheaton, Md. for nine years and Calvary Baptist Church in Timberville for 10 years.
He was predeceased by two sons, William 'Bill' Schelling and John P. Schelling; and a brother, Homer Schelling.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Patrica J. Bailey of Danville, Rebecca C. Kimbrey of Burlington, N.C., and Sarah A. Rithie of Grottoes; four sons, Gerald E. Schelling of Bassett, David T. Schelling of Collinsville, the Rev. Daniel C. Schelling of Stuart and Rev. Timothy A. Schelling of Walton, Ky.; one sister, Jane Hemperly of Tulsa, Okla.; two brothers, James Schelling of Lancaster, Pa., and the Rev. Russell Schelling of Jeffersonville; 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Stanleytown Baptist Church. Interment
will be in Roselawn Burial Park, Martinsville. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at the church. Collins Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
