George Martin Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - George Gilbert Martin Jr., of 214 Ruskin St., died Wednesday, August 25, 1999, at Durham Veterans Affairs Hospital, Durham. N.C.
Born March 10, 1926, in Danville, he was the son of George Gilbert Martin and Lacy Williams Morgan Martin.
He married
Eleanor Ann Ballard Martin Dec. 11, 1948, who predeceased Jan. 17, 1986., and later married
Jennie Duncan Cook Martin Feb. 14, 1987, who survives.
He was a veteran serving in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, Division I, Battery C.
He was wounded in battles on Okinawa and awarded the Purple Heart twice.
He played the bass violin with virtually all the regional bands before the war, and traveled extensively with several bands in Richmond and Chicago.
He returned to Danville to join the family business of refrigeration, air conditioning, plumbing and heating.
He formed his own company, Martin Refrigeration Service, where he remained until his illness.
In addition to his wife, of the residence, survivors include two sons, Marcus D. Martin and George G. Martin III, both of Danville; two sisters, Ardelle M. Carter of Lake Wales, Fla., and Mary Jane Bright of Kinston, N.C.; four brothers, James P. Morgan, Robert H. Martin, M. Gene Martin, all of Danville, and W. Ray Martin of Tucson, Ariz.,; one step-daughter Jeanette Cook Wilson of Raleigh, N.C.; one step-son, Wallace Cook of Greenville, N.C.; two grandchildren, five step grandchildren and 10 step-great grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife, he was predeceased by one sister, Betsy Martin Carden.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Tom Lane officiating.
Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery with full military rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Cecile Mills
DANVILLE, Va. - Cecile Glass Mills, 76, of 340 Stone Creek Road, died Tuesday morning, August 24, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 4, 1923, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Artie William Glass and Beulah Carter Glass.
She was married
to Aubrey Daniel Mills, who predeceased her July 22, 1985.
She was a former resident of Heritage Towers and had been a resident of Roman Eagle Memorial Home for the past year.
She was a member of Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church and was retired from Virginia Bank and Trust where she was employed for a number of years.
Survivors include one daughter, Judy Mills Richardson of Danville; three sisters, Marie G. Henderson and Edith G. Bradshaw, both of Danville, and Nancy G. Adkins of South Boston; and four grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, Virginia Rice and Dorothy Clark.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. George Neas officiating.
Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Virginia Scearce
DANVILLE, Va. - Virginia Fain Scearce, 73, of 436 Pinecrest Drive, died Tuesday, August 24, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center where she was sick for four days after six months of declining health.
Born March 24, 1926, in Meadows of Dan, Patrick County, she was the daughter of Amos Fain and Eunice Rakes Fain.
She was married
September 1960, to Warner Pell Scearce, who survives.
She lived all her life in Patrick County, Pittsylvania County and Danville.
She retired from Dan River Inc. as a receiving clerk and cloth inspector prior to becoming department clerk in No. 5 Inspection, Schoolfield Division with 40 years of service at the time of retirement.
She was very active in stamp collecting and was an avid reader.
She was a member of the former Second Baptist Church of Danville and attended Hillcrest Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Susan Scearce of the residence and Debbie Scearce Ingram of Danville; one son, Dan Sparrow of Blairs; three brothers, Clayton Fain Stuart, and James Fain and Wiliam Fain, both of Patrick Springs; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Stella F. Mitchell and Audrey F. Rorrer.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating.
Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at other times at the residence.
Edward Toler Sr.
FARMVILLE, Va. - Edward Yancie Toler Sr., 80, died Tuesday, August 24, 1999, at Southside Community Hospital, Farmville.
Born August 17, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Walter N. Toler and Myrtle Lewis Toler.
He was married
to Bertha Reece Toler, who predeceased him Oct. 3, 1979.
He was a former resident of Heritage Towers and lived all his life in Danville.
He retired from Perkinson Foundry.
He was a veteran in the United States Navy during World War II.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, E.Y. Toler Jr. of Danville; one daughter, Brenda T. Thaxton of Reidsville, N.C.; two sisters, Margaret Warren of Danville and Ruby Cannon of Detroit; two brothers, William Toler of Danville and Ernest Toler of Gastonia, N.C.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Linwood Hairfield, Sr. officiating.
Military honors will be conducted by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his son at 2979 Old Mayfield Road.

Ruth Barricks
DANVILLE, Va. - Ruth Spatz Barricks, 85, of 1111 Stratford House, died Wednesday, August 25, 1999, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Dec. 19, 1913, in New York City, she was the daughter of Joseph Spatz and Mollie Goldman Spatz.
She was married
to Leonard Issac Barricks, who predeceased her.
She made her home in Danville since 1996 after spending most of her life in Sioux City, Iowa, and Houston. She was a member of Temple Beth Sholom.
Survivors include two daughters, Susan Barricks Yourtz of Half Moon Bay, Calif., and Deborah Barricks Kovarsky of Danville; one brother, Dr. Sidney Spatz of Lake Worth, Fla.; one sister, Anna Gassman of Los Angeles; and two grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one sister, Ethel Handler.
A funeral will be held in Sioux City, Iowa.

Katharyne Buckner
DANVILLE, Va. - Katharyne Allen Buckner, 96, formerly of 524 Keen Street, died Thursday, August 26, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born December 17, 1902, in Danville, Virginia, she was the daughter of Charles Franklin Buckner and Leola Ferguson Buckner.
Miss Buckner retired in 1969, after over 40 years of employment with R.B. Rodgers Dry Cleaners and Laundry. She was a member of the Keen Street Baptist Church since November 17, 1915, where she had served her church faithfully in many capacities throughout her life. She first taught Sunday school in a house behind the old church in the 1920's, and later taught in the primary and intermediate departments as she had a real love for the young people of the church. Miss Buckner was also a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School class and a member of the choir.
She is survived by many cousins and many dear friends.
The funeral will be conducted Sunday, August 28, 1999, at 2 p.m. from the graveside in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Thomas Wright, the Rev. Dr. S. Felton Carter and the Rev. George Rumney.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 7-8 p.m. at Wrenn Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times may be reached at the home of Mrs. Jeane S. Blair, 1722 Blair Loop Road.
Jim Burnett
DANVILLE, Va. - Julian Bradwell "Jim" Burnett, 82, of 240 Alpine Drive, died Thursday, August 26, 1999, at the residence of several years of declining health.
Born June 8, 1917, in Dry Fork, Va., he was the son of Jason Osborne Burnett and Lula Emerson Burnett.
He was married
June 8, 1937, to Clara Haley Burnett, who survives.
He lived most of his life in Danville. His mother died giving birth and he was raised by his grandparents, John Pratt Burnett and Elizabeth Farthing Burnett and his aunt, Lessie Burnett. Prior to his retirement, he was employed with Dan River Inc. and was a member of Third Avenue Christian Church.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include one daughter, Barbara B. Lumpkin of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters, Hessie B. Hutcherson of Danville and Elizabeth B. Lovelace of Baltimore, Md.; three grandchildren and one great grandchild.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Freddie Vicks officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Rufus Cobbs
DANVILLE, Va. - Rufus R. Cobbs, 60, of 600 Main St., Apt. 410, died Monday, August 23, 1999, at his residence.
Born Aug. 4, 1939, in Pittsylvania County, in the Keeling community, he was the son of Woodrow Cobbs Sr. and Amy Skipper Cobbs.
He was educated in Pittsylvania County Schools. He was self-employed until his health failed. He was baptized and joined the Mount Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Ed. McLaughlin. He later joined Bethleham Temple Holiness Church with Elder Matthew Scott.
Survivors include two sons, Rufus R. Cobbs Jr. of Danville and Kenneth Darrell Cobbs of Horshem, Pa.; one sister, Alice Jean Sydnor of Blairs; five brothers, McAurthur Cobbs of Ringgold, John D. Cobbs and Thomas Cobbs, both of Danville, Woodrow Cobbs Jr. of Danville Bernard Cobbs of Lynchburg; and five grandchildren.
A special graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Oak Hill cemetery.

BLAIRS, VA. - Geneva Moorman, 88, of 710 Regina Drive, formerly of Pittsylvania County, Va., died Wednesday, August 25, 1999, in Cape Fear Medical Center in Fayetteville, N.C.
Born July 30, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Jake Moorman and Lucy Price Moorman.
She was married
to Eldridge Moorman, who predeceased her.
She was a member of New Life Apostolic Church in Chatham, Va. and was a homemaker.
Survivors include four daughters, Deverria Ford of Spring Lake, Arlene Wingford of Chesapeake, Va., Geraldine Glass of Philadelphia, Pa. and Alberta Mosley of New York; three sons, Louis Moorman of Blairs, Va., William Vate Moorman and Calvin Moorman, both of Bronx, N.Y.; one sister, Ethel Swanson of Martinsville, Va.; and many grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at New Life Apostolic Church with the Elder Charlie Witcher officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her son, Louis Moorman, 568 Pritchett Lane, Blairs, Va.
