Thomas Phelps, Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Thomas C. Phelps Jr., formerly of Timberlake Drive in Danville, died Wednesday, August 25, 1999, at The Colonnades Health Care Center in Charlottesville.
Born September 13, 1915, in Danville, he was the son of Thomas C. Phelps and Frances Hodnett Phelps.
He was married
to the late Essie Mae Williams Phelps.
For most of his career, he worked at Patterson's and then Revco Drug Stores in Danville. He was an elder and for many years the Sunday School Greeter at the First Presbyterian Church in Danville. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Lions Club.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and James Moody Foster of Richmond, and by his son and daughter-in-law, Thomas C. Phelps III and Holly Gladden Phelps, and by his grandchildren, Thomas C. Phelps IV and Julia Holland Phelps of Charlottesville.
He is also survived by one sister, Frances P. Edwards of Charlotte, N.C., and by his late wife's loving and supportive brothers and sisters and their families: Laura and David Boaz of Clifton Forge, Kathleen and Cecil Granger of South Boston, Espey Jones of South Boston, Betty and Pat Stacy of Cary, N.C., Grace Williams of South Boston, James R. and Mickey Williams of Vienna, and Raymond and Mattie Lee Williams of Manassas.
The funeral will be conducted on Saturday, August 28, at 2 p.m. at Townes Memorial Chapel in Danville by the Rev. Jack Heinsohn Jr. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Friday, August 27, from 7-8:30 p.m.

Mary Watlington
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Henderson Watlington, 78, of 689 Indian Valley Road, died Thursday, August 26, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 10, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Pendleton Henderson and Lucy Breeden Henderson, who survives.
She was married
to the Rev. Earlie Lee Watlington, who predeceased her April 14, 1981.
She retired from Old Dutch Supermarket.
She was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church.
In addition to her mother of Greensboro, N.C., survivors include two daughters, Peggy W. Martin of Wentworth, N.C., and Mildred W. Farthing of Providence, N.C.; three sons, Earl T. Watlington and Wayne P. Watlington, both of Providence, N.C., and David Ray Watlington of Danville; one brother, Lee Thomas Henderson of Providence; four sisters, Virginia H. Pruitt of Ringgold, Doris H. Warren of Greensboro, Bertha H. Skeen of Archdale, N.C. and Iris H. Tate of Moultrie, Ga.; ten grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Townes Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Cook and the Rev. Avery Marshall officiating.
Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Mildred W. Farthing, 921 Walters Mill Road.
Katharyne Buckner
DANVILLE, Va. - Katharyne Allen Buckner, 96, formerly of 524 Keen Street, died Thursday, August 26, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born December 17, 1902, in Danville, Virginia, she was the daughter of Charles Franklin Buckner and Leola Ferguson Buckner.
Miss Buckner retired in 1969, after over 40 years of employment with R.B. Rodgers Dry Cleaners and Laundry. She was a member of the Keen Street Baptist Church since November 17, 1915, where she had served her church faithfully in many capacities throughout her life. She first taught Sunday school in a house behind the old church in the 1920's, and later taught in the primary and intermediate departments as she had a real love for the young people of the church. Miss Buckner was also a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School class and a member of the choir.
She is survived by many cousins and many dear friends.
The funeral will be conducted Sunday, August 28, 1999, at 2 p.m. from the graveside in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Thomas Wright, the Rev. Dr. S. Felton Carter and the Rev. George Rumney.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 7-8 p.m. at Wrenn Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times may be reached at the home of Mrs. Jeane S. Blair, 1722 Blair Loop Road.
Jim Burnett
DANVILLE, Va. - Julian Bardwell "Jim" Burnett, 82, of 240 Alpine Drive, died Thursday, August 26, 1999, at the residence of several years of declining health.
Born June 8, 1917, in Dry Fork, Va., he was the son of Jason Osborne Burnett and Lula Emerson Burnett.
He was married
June 12, 1937, to Clara Haley Burnett, who survives.
He lived most of his life in Danville. His mother died giving birth and he was raised by his grandparents, John Pratt Burnett and Elizabeth Farthing Burnett and his aunt, Lessie Burnett. Prior to his retirement, he was employed with Dan River Inc. and was a member of Third Avenue Christian Church.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include one daughter, Barbara B. Lumpkin of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters, Hessie B. Hutcherson of Danville and Elizabeth B. Lovelace of Baltimore, Md.; three grandchildren and one great grandchild.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Freddie Vicks officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Cuba Hardy
KEELING, VA. - Cuba Clayton Hardy, 89, of 1848 Oak Grove Road, died Friday, August 27, 1999, at Brian Center Yanceyville, N.C., after two years of declining health.
Born June 18, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John Washington Hardy and Mollie Mills Hardy.
Mr. Hardy was married
Nov. 24, 1943, to Helen Vaughn Hardy, who survive.
Mr. Hardy had lived his entire life in the Keeling community of Pittsylvania County and was a retired tobacco farmer. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence, include a daughter, Sandra H. Miller and son-in-law, Ray T. Miller of Keeling; a daughter, Gay H. Boswell and son-in-law, William H. "Pete" Boswell, of Danville; four grandchildren, Steven B. Boswell, Midlothian, Kirk T. Miller, Keeling, Laura B. Davis, Ringgold and Traci M. Lancaster, Danville; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Ira Hardy and a sister, Doris Ingram.
A funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Tom Erwin officiating. Interment
will be in Hardy Family cemetery, Keeling, Va.

George Martin Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - George Gilbert Martin Jr., of 214 Ruskin St., died Wednesday, August 25, 1999, at Durham Veterans Affairs Hospital in Durham, N.C.
Born March 10, 1926, in Danville, he was the son of George Gilbert Martin and Lacy Williams Morgan Martin.
He married
Eleanor Ann Ballard Martin Dec. 11, 1948, who predeceased him Jan. 17, 1986., and later married
Jennie Duncan Cook Martin Feb. 14, 1987, who survives.
He was a charter member of Northview Presbyterian Church, Danville.
A veteran of World War II, he was in the Marine Corps, Division I, Battery C. He was wounded in battles on Okinawa and awarded the Purple Heart twice. A well-known musician in Danville, he played bass violin with virtually all the regional bands before the war, and traveled extensively with several name bands in Richmond and Chicago. He returned to Danville to join the family business of refrigeration, air conditioning, plumbing and heating. He formed his own company, Martin Refrigeration Service, where he remained until his illness.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Marcus D. Martin and George G. Martin III, both of Danville; one stepdaughter, Jeanette Cook Wilson of Raleigh, N.C.; one stepson, Wallace Cook of Greenville, N.C.; two sisters, Ardelle M. Carter of Lake Wales, Fla., and Mary Jane Bright of Kinston, N.C.; four brothers, James P. Morgan, Robert H. Martin, M. Gene Martin, all of Danville, and W. Ray Martin of Tucson, Ariz.; two grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife, he was predeceased by one sister, Betsy Martin Carden.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Tom Lane officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery with full military rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
Victoria McKinney
SUTHERLIN, Va. - Victoria Elizabeth Lynch McKinney, 81, of 545 East Hightower Road, died Wednesday, August 25, 1999, at Piney Forest Health Care Center where she had resided for seven months during one year of declining health.
Born March 20, 1918, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Eldridge Lynch and Mary Adkins Lynch.
She was married
Nov. 28, 1949, to John Dodson McKinney, who survives.
She lived her entire life in Halifax County and Pittsylvania County where she was a homemaker. She was of the Methodist Faith.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Mary Jane Murray of Virgilina, Nancy Traylor of Matocac and Peggy Moss of Halifax; four sons, Willie E. McKinney of Virgilina, Jerry "Tex" McKinney of Franklin, Glenn T. McKinney of Sutherlin and John Wayne McKinney of Suffolk; ten grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Chris Griggs officiating. Burial will be in Leemont cemetery.

Jenna Berkhead
DANVILLE, Va. - Jenna Compton Berkhead, 54, of 427 Sandy River Drive, died unexpectedly Friday, August 27, 1999, at her residence.
Born March 19, 1945 in Martinsville, she was the daughter of the late Luther Marshall Compton and Virginia Merriman Compton.
She was married
Feb. 26, 1965, to Thomas "Tom" M. Berkhead, who survives.
She lived all her life in Henry and Pittsylvania counties and Danville. She was a graduate of Fieldale High School and had attended Averett College. She was employed by First Virginia Bank-Southwest where she was head teller with more than 20 years of service. She was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Beth Berkhead Grimes and her husband Ben Grimes of Phenix City, Ala.; one son, Thomas David Berkhead and his fiancee Wendy Simpson of Raleigh, N.C.; two brothers, Ted Compton of Fieldale and Ron Compton of Wenatchee, Wash.; and three granddaughters, Laura C. Grimes, Alyson Land Grimes and Jenna Lyn Grimes all of Phenix City, Ala.
A private memorial service will be conducted at a later date for Mrs. Berkhead.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence, located in Fox Hollow off Westover Drive.

Mary Gravett
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Elizabeth Gravett, 75, of 222 First St., died Thursday, August 26, 1999 at her residence.
Born Jan. 29, 1924 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Edward Nash and Mary Tapley.
She was married
to James Thomas Gravett, who predeceased her.
She was employed with Export Tobacco Co. for many years. She was a member of Camp Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Gloria Whitten of East Orange, N.J. and Ann Alston and Saberina Coleman, both of Danville; one son, James H. Gravett of Danville; one sister, Sarah Younger of Gretna; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Camp Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Ernest Barksdale officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
