Cuba Hardy
KEELING, Va. - Cuba Clayton Hardy, 89, of 1848 Oak Grove Road, died Friday, August 27, 1999, at the Brian Center Yanceyville, N.C., after two years of declining health.
Born June 18, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John Washington Hardy and Mollie Mills Hardy.
Mr. Hardy was married
Nov. 24, 1943, to Helen Vaughn Hardy, who survive.
Mr. Hardy had lived his entire life in the Keeling community of Pittsylvania County and was a retired tobacco farmer. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence, include a daughter, Sandra H. Miller and son-in-law, Ray T. Miller of Keeling; a daughter, Gay H. Boswell and son-in-law, William H. "Pete" Boswell, of Danville; four grandchildren, Steven B. Boswell of Midlothian, Kirk T. Miller of Keeling, Laura B. Davis of Ringgold and Traci M. Lancaster of Danville; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Ira Hardy and a sister, Doris Ingram.
A funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Tom Erwin officiating. Interment
will be in Hardy Family cemetery, Keeling, Va.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 1848 Oak Grove Road, Keeling, Va.
Charlie Tanner
SUTHERLIN, Va. - Charlie "C.B." Tanner, 68, died Wednesday, August 25, 1999, in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Durham, N.C.
Born Dec. 24, 1930 in Halifax County, he was the son of Will Tanner and Harriett Moore Tanner.
He served in the United States Army and was last employed at DIMON Inc.
He joined the White Oak Grove Baptist Church in Sutherlin at an early age and remained faithful until his health began to fail.
Survivors include one sister, Roberta T. Allen of Sutherlin; three brothers, Oprea Tanner of Ringgold, William Tanner and Robinson Tanner, both of Blairs.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the White Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Jefferson Goode officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Roberta T. Allen, 1061 Kerns Mill Road, Sutherlin.
Melvin Dunn
ALTON, Va. - Melvin Jackson Dunn, 61, of Alton died Thursday, August 26, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston.
He was born Oct. 24, 1937 in Halifax County.
He is survived by his sister, Joan Boxley of Alton, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Dunn will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Dan River Bethel Baptist Church in Alton with interment following in the Dunn family cemetery.
There will be a viewing one hour prior to the services. The Rev. James Thomas will officiate.

Mary Gravett
DANVILLE, Va.- Mary Elizabeth Gravett, 75, of 222 First St., died Thursday, August 26, 1999 at her residence.
Born Jan. 29, 1924 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Edward Nash and Mary Tapley.
She was married
to James Thomas Gravett, who predeceased her.
She was employed with Export Tobacco Co. for many years. She was a member of Camp Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Gloria Whitten of East Orange, N.J. and Ann Alston and Saberina Coleman, both of Danville; one son, James H. Gravett of Danville; one sister, Sarah Younger of Gretna; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Camp Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Ernest Barksdale officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Pauline Byrd
DANVILLE, Va - Henrietta Pauline Barnes Byrd, of 280 West Main Street, died Sunday, August 29, 1999, at Piney Forest Healthcare Center.
Mrs. Byrd was born on September 7, 1910, in Lucama, N.C., the daughter of Kenchen Wiley Barnes and Addie Lee Bray Barnes.
She was married
to the late Dr. Allen Leet Byrd, who predeceased her in September of 1966.
Mrs. Byrd was a graduate of Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C. She was a member of the Wednesday Club, the Danville and Pittsylvania County Medical Auxilliary. Mrs. Byrd was past president of the Wayside Garden Club, a former member of the Danville Golf Club and the Fireside Book Club. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Mrs. Byrd is survived by one daughter, Polly Byrd Humphrey and a son-in-law, C.H. Humphrey of Danville; and one grandson, Allen Byrd Humphrey of Danville.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 31, 1999, 2:00 p.m. at Townes Memorial Chapel. Rev. Joey Faucette will be conducting the services. Interment
will be held Wednesday, September 1, 1999, 2 p.m. at Montlawn cemetery in Raleigh, N.C.
The family will be at the residence.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial donations may be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew or the First Baptist Church Youth Ministry.
Florence Moss
DANVILLE, Va. - Florence Wehry Darnell Moss, 85, died Sunday, August 29, 1999, at Piney Forest Health Care Center where she resided for the past 31/2 years.
Born in Danville Dec. 13, 1913, Moss was a daughter of James A. Wehry and Martha I. Mills Wehry. She was first married
to Lytle W. Darnell, who predeceased her. She then married
Charlie E. Moss, who also predeceased her.
Moss spent most of her life in Danville, where she was a retired saleslady with Southern Department Store. She was a member of Mosley Memorial United Methodist Church and also a member of the church's Circle #1.
Moss was predeceased by a daughter, Betty Darnell, and two sisters, Mary A. Irwin and Dorothy W. Adkins.
Survivors include one son, Donald Darnell of Danville; five daughters, Patsy Peak of Baltimore, Ellen Hayden of Blairs, Martha Darnell and Linda Crumpton, both of Danville and Chryle Pendleton of South Daytona, Fla.; one half-brother, Harold Reynolds of Danville, 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Lester G. Peters. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Linda Crumpton, 215 Vicar Place.
Bascomb Thompson
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Bascomb Balfour Thompson, 82, of Beverly Health Care Center in Martinsville, died Sunday, August 29, 1999, at Beverly Health Care Center.
Born May 24, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of William Preston Thompson and the Lois Easley Thompson.
He was married
to Lois Easley Thompson, who survives.
He retired from the Martinsville Police Department in 1979, after 26 years of service. He was a member of Chatham Heights Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife of Martinsville, survivors include two sons, Bascomb B. Thompson, Jr. of Axton and Ronnie G. Thompson of Penhook; one daughter, Patsy Law Thompson Cheek of Wirtz; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by five brothers, Richard Morton Thompson, Edward Samuel Thompson, William Henry Thompson, Joseph Carter Thompson and Robert Clarence Thompson; and three sisters Myrtle Thompson Baker, Louise Thompson Hughson and Mable Thompson Haffard.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at McKee-Stone Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Mike Derflinger officiating. Interment
will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel.
Billy Watlington
DANVILLE, Va. - Billy Lee Watlington, 53, of 165 Lynch St., died Saturday, August 28, 1999 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 25, 1946 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Robert C. Watlington and Maggie Jones Watlington.
He was married
to Berta Martin Watlington, who survives.
He made his home in Danville all of his life. He worked for Dan River Inc. as an electrician before becoming disabled in 1981. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Billy Watlington Jr. of the residence; four sisters, Thelma Tucker of Baltimore, Naomi Rudder, Margaret Reese and Shirley Gray, all of Danville; two brothers, Curtis Watlington of Keeling and John B. Watlington of Ringgold; and one granddaughter.
He was predeceased by a brother, Robert C. Watlington, Jr.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens by the Rev. Clay Knick.
The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. At other times the family will receive friends at the residence.
Bernice Wood
GRETNA, Va. - Bernice Yeatts Wood, 85, of 352 Norris Road, Gretna died Monday, August 30, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 28, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie Vincent Yeatts and Ida Jane Simpson Yeatts.
Mrs. Wood was predecesed by her husband, Irvin Green Wood Sr.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gretna and a homemaker.
She is survived by two sons, Irvin G. Wood Jr. and L. Lynn Wood, both of Gretna; two daughters, Brenda Andrews of Gretna and Kathy Simpson of Hurt; two grandsons, Michael Andrews and Adam Andrews, both of Gretna.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 1, 1999, at Colbert Moran Chapel by Rev. Glenn Graves and Rev. W.D. Lilly. Burial will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. at Colbert Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Jackie Andrews, 1048 Lotus Drive, Gretna.

Mildred Young
DANVILLE, Va. - Mildred J. Young, 81, of 819 Franklin Turnpike, Danville, died Sunday, August 29, 1999, 11:05 p.m. at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 21, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Oscar Dodd and Annie Booth Dodd.
She was married
February 20, 1955, to Howard Aubrey Young, who survive.
Mrs. Young was a member of Northview Presbyterian Church and its Ladies circle. She had worked as a bookkeeper for Jones Sausage Company until her retirement.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Brantley H. Jones of Danville; one sister, Ruth Collins of Danville; and two granddaughters, Alison P. Jones and Kelly F. Esguerra, both of Greensboro, N.C.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Walker Pettyjohn and the Rev. Adolf Oterson officiating.

James Breedlove
TREVOSE, Pa. - James Andrew Breedlove, 74, died Sunday, August 29, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital in Langhorne, Pa.
Born July 22, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of Elder Willie Breedlove Sr. and Annie Inge Breedlove.
Survivors include three sons, James T. Breedlove of Philadelphia, Thomas H. Breedlove of Danville, Va. and Harold V. Breedlove of Hara've, Zimbabwe; two daughters, Brenda Carter of Danville, Va., and Marva Coleman of Capital Heights, Md.; two brothers, Vincent Breedlove of Hampton, Va., and Willie Breedlove of Norman, Ill.; two sisters, Harriett Bennett of Dry Fork, Va., and Emma B. Smith of Ettrick, Va.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by one brother, Lawson Breedlove.
A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Beavers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Billy R. Inge officiating.
