DANVILLE, Va. - Haywood Rayfield Carter, 80, of 206 Quarry St., died Tuesday, September 1, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 13, 1919, in Bluefield, W.Va., he was the son of James Carter and Lelia Carter.
He was married
to Hallie B. Carter, who survives.
He was a laborer with DIMON Inc. and a member of First Baptist Missionary Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Haywood "Biscuit" Carter and Laconia Carter, both of Danville; 10 daughters, Pasadena Woods and Pearl Washington, both of Washington, Lelia Harrison of Danville, Hazel Howard and Cynthia Carter, both of Suitland, Md., Annette Yarbrough of Morning Side, Md., Angela DeShazor, Rachael Alston and Karen Richardson, and Sherry Gunn, all of Danville, and one brother, Randolph Emmerson of Baltimore.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Missionary Church with the Rev. J.P. Griffith officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post No. 29.
A viewing will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Hattie Green
DANVILLE, Va. - Hattie Forbes Green, 87, formerly of 4513 Horseshoe Road, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after several years of declining health.
Born July 31, 1912, she was the daughter of John T. Forbes and Kennie Jefferson Forbes. She lived all her life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County area where she was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Green, who died in July 1993, and by a grandson, Donnie Ray Green.
Survivors include one son, Phillip Greene of Danville; one brother, Darrell Forbes of Danville; one sister, June White of Danville; one granddaughter, Betty Griffin; one grandson, Gregory Dale Green, and one great-granddaughter, Danielle Griffin.
Graveside funeral services will be held Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, at 2 p.m., at Highland Burial Park with William H. Nonkes officiating.
The family will receive friends Sunday 7:30-8:30 p.m., at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and at other times at the residence of Phillip Greene, 4525 Horseshoe Road.
Mable Hudson
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Mable Owen Hudson, 72, of 3120 Dan River Church Road, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born in Halifax County on Jan. 14, 1927. She was the daughter of John Thomas Owen Sr. and Jennie Canada Owen and was married
to Billy Lee Hudson, who survives. She attended Dan River Baptist Church.
Survivors in addition to her husband include one daughter, Patricia Elder of Nathalie; three sisters, Rosa O. Powell of South Boston, Jeanette O. Ligon of Scottsburg, and Ruby O. Watts of Harrisburg, N.C.; three brothers, John T. Owen Jr. and Earl Owen, both of Halifax, and Clyde Owen of Scottsburg; two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept. 6, at 2 p.m., at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joe Brewer and the Rev. Rodney Barwick conducting the service. Burial in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Queenie Stokes
DANVILLE, Va. - Queenie S. Stokes, 83, of 450 Piney Forest Road, died Tuesday, September 2, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 28, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Dabney Scott and Eliza Davis Scott.
She was married
to Nelson Stokes, who predeceased her.
She was employed at Lorillard Inc. for many years prior to her retirement.
Survivors include three daughters, Janett Robertson, Gayle Totten and Nellie Bolton, all of Danville; two sons, William Scott and Lorenzo Stokes, both of Danville; and one brother, William E. Scott of Danville.
A funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Bennett Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. William D. Scott officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Janett Robertson, 851 Melrose Ave., Danville.

BALTIMORE - Elbert Wilson Adams, 85, of 6040 Harford Road, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, at the Hamilton Center.
Born June 3, 1914 in Danville, Va., he was the son of Anderson P. Adams and Nancy Emerson Adams.
He was married
to Lottie Reynolds Adams, who predeceased him.
Survivors include one son, E. Lee Adams of Roanoke, Va.; one daughter, Patsy A. Bouthner of Baltimore; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Leemont cemetery, Danville, Va., with the Rev. Edward L. Earl officiating.

Desiree Carden
CHATHAM, Va. - Desiree Carden, 11 months, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 18, 1998, in Danville, she was the daughter of Christopher and Jeri Carden.
In addition to her parents, survivors include maternal grandparents, Henry and Ella Mae Miller of Java; paternal grandparents, Richard Carden and Maxine and Lezlie Coleman, all of Scottsburg; paternal great-grandmother, Fannie Y. Coleman of Scottsburg; paternal great-grandparents, Peggy and Josh Carden of Scottsburg; maternal great-grandfather Charlie Townes of Java.
A funeral will be held noon Tuesday at Shockoe Baptist Church with the Rev. G.H. Pass officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Forest Dix, 80, formerly of 231 S. Ridge St., died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center after a decline in health over the past several years.
Born July 26, 1919, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Carrie Sylvester Dix.
She was a member of Baptist Tabernacle and a homemaker, having lived all of her life in Danville.
Survivors include one brother, Claude H. Dix Sr. of Lexington, N.C.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Lamarr Mooneyham and the Rev. Dr. R.J. Barber.

Peggy Fain
DANVILLE, Va. - Peggy Jane Smith Fain, 57, of 120 Old Piney Forest Road, Lot 32, died Sunday afternoon, Sept. 5, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health over the past five years and a five day stay at the hospital.
Born Oct. 15, 1941, in Danville, she was the daughter of Edgar Smith and Cora Payne Smith.
She was formerly married
to Burton L. Fain, who survives.
She spent most of her life in Danville and Pittsylvania County where she was a homemaker.
She was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.
Survivors, in addition to her former husband of Danville, include three daughters, Linda Sheets of Durham, N.C., Brenda Doss of Ringgold and Carolyn Collins of Candor, N.C.; two sons, Larry B. Fain Jr. and Daniel R. Fain, both of Danville; one sister, Nellie A. Irby of Sutherlin; three brothers, Edward Smith of Ringgold, James Smith of Pelham, N.C. and David Smith of Danville; and eight grandchildren.

CHATHAM, Va. - Rosetta P. Oliver, 89, of Guildfield Apartment 30, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 11, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Fred and Sophia Payne.
She was married
to Charlie Oliver, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Smithfield Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include four sisters, Alease Payne, Ruth Coleman and Eva Payne, all of Chatham and Vealetta Payne of Rocky Mount.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Smithfield Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Beauford Craighead officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

DANVILLE, Va. - Minnie Gauldin Samuels, 80, formerly of Moorefield Bridge Road, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Sept. 10, 1918, in LaCrosse, she was the daughter of Edward Lee Gauldin and Martha Hall Gauldin.
She was married
to Gay Dillard Samuels who predeceased her Oct. 3, 1977.
She was retired from Dan River, Inc., where she had been employed for 32 years. She was a member of Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church.
She was predeceased by one brother, Calvin Gauldin, and six sisters, Nora Harris, Christine Arrington, Daisy Daniel, Eva long, Carrie Crutchfield and Mary Hale.
Survivors include three sisters, Virgie Dix and Claudia Crowder, both of LaCrosse, and Madie Crutchfield of South Hill.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dave Rochford and the Rev. George Neas officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
