CHATHAM, Va. - Odell Morrison Sr., 60, of 117 Robins Court, died Thursday, September 9, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 20, 1938, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Hettie McKenzie.
He was married
to Louella Morrison, who survives.
He was employed by Saunders Saw Mill.
He was a member of the Cherrystone Missionary Baptist Church where he served on the Usher Board and a member of the Male Chorus.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include seven sons, Odell Morrison Jr. of Gretna, Henry Morrison and Kenneth Morrison, both of Chatham, Steve Darrell, Michael Morrison and Jerry Morrison, all of Danville; four daughters, Jessie Morrison of the residence, Mary Ann Carter of Chatham, Angel Morrison and Lucille Myers, both of Danville; three brothers, Willie McKenzie of Bland, Starling McKenzie of Lynchburg and Ricky McKenzie of Chatham; two sisters, Bernice Younger of Gretna and Lorrine Price of Augusta, Ga.; and sixteen grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Cherrystone Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Floyd Jones officiating. Interment
will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.

Ida Mulchi
ALTON, Va. - Ida Conner Mulchi, 70, of 2082 Horseshoe Trail, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Nov. 30, 1928, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Luther Patrick Conner and Lessie Carver Conner.
Survivors include one daughter, Janet Carpenter of Midlothian; one son, Irvin Conner of Alton; three sisters, Mattie Perkins of Halifax, Dorothy Smith of Searcy, Ark., and Nellie Vaughan of Alton; one brother, Luther Randolph Conner of Alton; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Saunders and the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Burial will be in Black Walnut Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Nellie Vaughan, 2084 Horseshoe Trail, Alton.
Cleo Richardson
DANVILLE, Va. - Cleo Virginia Moore Richardson, 61, of 208 Nelson Ave., died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at her residence.
Born July 1, 1938, in Danville, she was the daughter of William Andrew Moore and Eva Eaton Moore.
She was married
May 14, 1955, to Billy Wayne Richardson Sr., who survives.
She was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church. She was employed as clerk for Rappahannock Seafood.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Billy Wayne Richardson Jr. of Danville; one daughter, Ellen R. Shelton of Java; three brothers, David Moore of Ringgold, Frank Moore of Miami, Fla. and Harley Moore of Eden, N.C; two sisters, Loraina M. Edmonds of Danville and Ruth M. Brooks of Java; and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Highland Park Baptist Church with the Rev. Fred Cox officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Walter "Rusty" Spain
DANVILLE, Va. - Walter Alvin "Rusty" Spain, 80, of 149 Starling Ave., died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at the residence.
Born Feb. 11, 1919, in Danville, he was the son of Walter Gray Spain and Dora Clark Spain.
He was married
Oct. 28, 1939, to Lillian May Honig Spain, who survives.
He was employed by the General Services Administration until his retirement in 1968.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was a member of the National Association of Federal Retired Employees.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Dora Bell Olson of Vienna, Va.; two sons, Walter A. Spain, Jr. of Danville and David L. Spain of Gulfport, Miss.; three sisters, Viola S. Sanders of Lynchburg, Delilah S. Simpson of Fairfax, and Nadie S. Snead of Danville; one brother, Richard E. Spain of Danville; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Burial will be Floral Hills Memory Gardens with military honors conducted by the American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.

Eva Thompson
DANVILLE, Va. - Eva Scarce Thompson, 87, of 270 Linden Drive, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 18, 1912, in Danville, she was the daughter of John Wesley Scarce and Bessie Smiley Scarce.
She was married
June 2, 1936, to William T. Thompson Jr., who predeceased her Oct. 19, 1967.
She was employed by the former Memorial Hospital where she supervised the Business Department and Related Services.
She was a member of the Wednesday Club, serving on the Board of Trustees and as Treasurer.
She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church where she served on Administration Board and Board of Trustees.
Survivors include one brother, John Wesley Scarce Jr. of Danville.
She was predeceased by three sisters, Margaret Scarce Hite, Ruth Scarce Fitch and Clide Scarce; and one brother, Percy J. Scearce.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. George Neas, Rev. Rebecca Yow and the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence and the residence of her brother, 154 Clarendon Circle.
Elsie Toler
DANVILLE, Va. - Elsie Coles Toler, 92, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at Roman Eagle Nursing Home.
Born July 11, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Belvin Coles and Rosie Stone Coles.
She was married
to Claude S. Toler, who predeceased her.
She was a shift worker with Dan River Inc.
She was a member of Bethelem Temple Holiness Church.
Survivors include one son, Clyde A. Toler of Portsmouth; one daughter, Pearl S. Coleman of Danville; and one bBy RUSTY MULLINS
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Cunningham and Hughes Memorial Chapel. Interment
will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

Matilda Baxa
DANVILLE, Va. - Matilda "Tillie" Bryant Baxa, 81, of 1111 Main St., the Stratford House, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 3, 1918, in Buckhannon, W. Va., she was the daughter of Clarance Hubert and Beulah Herndon Bryant.
She was married
to Ernest Granville Baxa, who survives.
She was a graduate of the West Virginia Wesleyan College and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
She was an elementary school librarian for 24 years in the Danville Public Schools. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a member and volunteer at the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History.
She was also a member of the Forest Hills Garden Club, the Wednesday Club, the Bookshelf Book Club, Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Society and the Retired Teachers Association of Danville. She was also on the board of the Community Concert Association.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three sons, Dr. Ernest G. Baxa Jr. of Clemson, S.C.; David B. Baxa of Alexandria and John W. Baxa of Roswell, Ga.; a brother, James W. Bryant of Buckhannon, W.Va.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jack F. Heinsohn Jr. and the Rev. Elbert M. Williamson officiating. Internment will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Evergreen Room at the Stratford House.

Henry Carter
DANVILLE, Va. - Henry Stuart Carter, 85, of 212 Rosewood Court died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center, where he had resided since January. He had been in declining health four years.
Born Sept. 10, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John C. and Nellie Kate William Carter.
He lived most of his life in the Mount Cross Community and was a retired loom fixer at Dan River Inc. For more than 60 years, he was an active member of Sharon Baptist church, serving as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and choir director.
Survivors include his wife, Zula Payne Carter of the home; a son, Jerry Stuart Carter of Lexington Park, Md.; a daughter, Mary Jane Edwards of Atlanta; five brothers, Spencer Carter of Eden, N.C., Woodrow Carter of South Boston, Charlie Carter of Mount Cross Road, Harry Carter of Dallas and Carlton Carter of Danville; two sisters, Alice Astin of the Mount Cross community and Gertrude Blair of Vance; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Sharon Baptist Church, with the Rev. Allen Holder officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Effie Fisher
NATHALIE, Va - Effie Farris Fisher, 94, of L.P. Bailey Hwy., Millstone community, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at Berry Hill Nursing Home.
Born June 10, 1905, in Campbell County, she was a daughter of John William and Hattie Murphy Farris. She was married
to Joseph Thomas Fisher Sr. and was a member of the Republican Grove United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Effie Mae Waller of Nathalie and Joanne Deborah Smith of South Boston; three sons, Joseph T. Fisher Jr. of Halifax, Dr. Richard Fisher of Brookneal and Douglas Fisher of Nathalie; 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Adelaide Fisher; and a son, Ralph Fisher.
Graveside services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Republican Grove United Methodist Church cemetery, with the Rev. Bob Watts officiating.
Clyde Hanes Jr.
RICHMOND, Va. - Clyde D. Hanes Jr., 72, of 3910 Arden Road died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at Memorial Regional Medical Center in Richmond.
Born Sept. 9, 1927, in Chicago, he was a son of Clyde Daniel Hanes Sr. and Viola Hagerman Hanes.
He was married
on Sept. 28, 1956, to Doris M. Hanes, who survives him. He was a retired postal worker and a veteran of the Air Force. He was a member of V.F.W. Post No. 9808 in Richmond.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a stepson, Randy Watts of Richmond; a sister, Dania Hanes Smith of Danville; a half-brother, Carl Smith of Beaufort, S.C.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Highland Burial Park in Danville, with the Rev. Rodney Barker officiating. Military graveside honors will be given by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 7-8 p.m. in the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, Richmond, and on Monday from 3-5 p.m. in Danville at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Cook.

C. L. Loftis Jr.
LAFAYETTE, Calif. - Cecil L. Loftis Jr., 51, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, after six weeks of declining health.
Born July 27, 1948, he was the son of the late Cecil L. Loftis and Louise H. Loftis, who survives.
He was married
to Maureen Henderson Loftis, who survives.
He served in the United States Marine Corp during the Vietnam conflict. He lived his early life in Danville and was associated with Loftis Tire Company. For the past 25 years, he lived in Florida and California. He worked as project construction manager with Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Lafayette.
In addition to his mother of Ringgold, Va. and wife of Lafayette, survivors include two sons, Klint Von Gal of Vero Beach, Fla. and Kal Von Gal of Autaugazille, Al.; one daughter, Nicole Loftis of the residence; three sisters, Linda Dalton of Sante Fe, N.M., Dot Moore of Ringgold and Patricia Burke of Dry Fork.
A memorial service will be held in Lafayette.
