Harry McKinney
HALIFAX, Va. - Harry Elliott McKinney, 81, of 5047 Mountain Road, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
He was born Aug. 14, 1918, in Charlotte County.
He was married
to Nannie Bell Rutledge McKinney, who survives.
He was a member of the Pleasant Grove United Church of Christ.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a stepdaughter, Elizabeth Ann Horton of Halifax; three stepsons, Robert Woodson Chappell of Winston-Salem, N.C., Pete Chappell of Halifax and Jackie Allen Chappell of Vernon Hill; seven stepgrandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren.
Funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Pleasant Grove United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Carl Hudson and Rev. Jim Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday Powell Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence.
Elsie Reynolds
GRETNA, Va. - Elsie Blanche Glass Reynolds, 61, of 11725 Rockford School Road, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at her residence.
Born Dec. 23, 1937, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Walter and Cora Payne Glass of Hurt, who survive.
She was married
to Percy Reynolds, who predeceased her.
She was a member of the Mount Moriah Baptist Church, where she served on the missionary circle, sang in the choir and was a member of the beautification and food committees. She was last employed with the Nathan Barley Janitorial Service.
In addition to her parents, survivors include three daughters, Regina Reynolds of the residence, Betty R. Carter of Gretna and Frances Reynolds of Columbia, Md.; two sons, Franklin Reynolds of Gretna and Calvin Reynolds of Richmond; three sisters, Geneva Davis of Hurt and Coretha Reynolds and Virgie Reynolds, both of Gretna; two brothers, Silas Glass and Paul Glass, both of Hurt; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Bennett Glass.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, with the Rev. Johnny Hunt and Rev. A.L. Dean officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Cleo Richardson
DANVILLE, Va. - Cleo Virginia Moore Richardson, 61, of 208 Nelson Ave., died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at her residence.
Born July 1, 1938, in Danville, she was the daughter of William Andrew Moore and Eva Eaton Moore.
She was married
May 14, 1955, to Billy Wayne Richardson Sr., who survives.
She was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church. She was employed as clerk for Rappahannock Seafood.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Billy Wayne Richardson, Jr. of Danville; one daughter, Ellen R. Shelton of Java; three brothers, David Moore of Ringgold, Frank Moore of Miami, Fla. and Harley Moore of Eden, N.C; two sisters, Loraina M. Edmonds of Danville and Ruth M. Brooks of Java; and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Highland Park Baptist Church with the Rev. Fred Cox officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
George Rison III
RICHMOND, Va. - George Townes Rison III died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, in Richmond.
Born in Chatham, he was a son of William and Mirion Rison.
He attended Hargrave Military Academy and graduated from Chatham High School before earning degrees from the University of Richmond and the T.C. Williams Law School. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a teacher and coach and worked for many years for Travelers Insurance Company before retiring.
He was a past member of the Jaycees and the Chamber of Commerce in Richmond, an active member of the West Henrico Kiwanis and a lifetime member of Kiwanis International. He was a member of All Saints Episcopol Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lousie S. Rison of the home; two daughters, Sarah R. Coppoa of Lynchburg and Ann R. Yancey of Richmond; a son, G. Townes Rison III of Ashland; and a sister, Evelyn R. Palmer of Richmond.
A memorial service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at All Saints Episcopol Church. A graveside memorial service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Chatham Burial Park, with retired Bishop Heath Light officiating.
Mary Sheppard
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Mary Virginia Sheppard, 85, of 141 Forest Lane died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at Stratford Health Care Center in Danville.
Born May 2, 1914, in Martinsville, she was a daughter of George and Lucy Byrd Wyatt.
She was the widow of Wren Ellis Sheppard, a homemaker and a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Rilla Jane Beal of Martinsville and Brenda L. Pulley of Southerlin; a son, Walter Ellis Sheppard of Martinsville; a sister, Hazel Mitchell of Martinsville; nine grandchildren, two stepgranchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Kathleen Holley; and several brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Norris Funeral Home, with the Rev. Doyle Wyatt and the Rev. Jim Mattox officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery.
The family will receive friends at various times the the residence.
Walter "Rusty" Spain
DANVILLE, Va. - Walter Alvin "Rusty" Spain, 80, of 149 Starling Ave., died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at the residence.
Born Feb. 11, 1919, in Danville, he was the son of Walter Gray Spain and Dora Clark Spain.
He was married
Oct. 28, 1939, to Lillian May Honig Spain, who survives.
He was employed by the General Services Administration until his retirement in 1968.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was a member of the National Association of Federal Retired Employees.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Dora Bell Olson of Vienna, Va.; two sons, Walter A. Spain, Jr. of Danville and David L. Spain of Gulfport, Miss.; three sisters, Viola S. Sanders of Lynchburg, Va., Delilah S. Simpson of Fairfax, Va., and Nadie S. Snead of Danville; one brother, Richard E. Spain of Danville; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Burial will be Floral Hills Memory Gardens with military honors conducted by the American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Eva Thompson
DANVILLE, Va. - Eva Scarce Thompson, 87, of 270 Linden Drive, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 18, 1912, in Danville, she was the daughter of John Wesley Scarce and Bessie Smiley Scarce.
She was married
June 2, 1936, to William T. Thompson Jr., who predeceased her Oct. 19, 1967.
She was employed by the former Memorial Hospital where she supervised the Business Department and Related Services. She was a member of the Wednesday Club, serving on the Board of Trustees and as Treasurer. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church where she served on Administration Board and Board of Trustees.
Survivors include one brother, John Wesley Scarce Jr. of Danville.
She was predeceased by three sisters, Margaret Scarce Hite, Ruth Scarce Fitch and Clide Scarce; and one brother, Percy J. Scearce.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. George Neas, Rev. Rebecca Yow and the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. A private interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence and the residence of her brother, 154 Clarendon Circle.
Jesse James Watlington
DANVILLE, Va. - Jesse James Watlington, 75, of 3014 Hedrick Court, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 22, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Percy Edward and Saxton Worley Allen Watlington.
He was married
March 14, 1942 to Mary Francis Snow Watlington, who survives.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was retired as a machine repairman at Eaton Manufacturing in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a member of Concord United Methodist Church in Concord.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Michael E. Watlington of Denver and Charles V. Watlington of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a daughter, Gail W. Plowman of California; a brother, Boyce Allen of Lynchburg; a sister, Patricia Cox, of Lynchburg; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Percy E. Watlington Jr.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Freddy Vicks and Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Internment will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.
David Radford
DANVILLE, Va. - David Nathaniel Radford, 77, of 130 Brush Arbor Court, died Monday, September 13, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a two-day stay and several years of declining health.
Born Sept. 9, 1922, in Bandy, he was the son of Riley Radford and Rosa Ellen Reed Radford Bandy.
He was married
to Rebecca Gholson Radford, who predeceased him May 7, 1997.
He was a veteran serving in United States Army during World War II, receiving the Purple Heart and the Distinguished Service Cross. He resided in Chesapeake, prior to moving to the Danvile area in 1976. He worked as a civilian employee for the United States Navy where he was a crane operator, prior to his retirement in 1974. He was a member of The Disabled American Veterans and the Great Hope Baptist Church in Chesapeake.
Survivors include three sons, Jerry Radford of the residence, Wayne Clinton Hodges and Irving Kenneth Hodges, both of Chesapeake; one daughter, Rosemarie Martin of Racine, Wis.; one brother, James Robert Radford of Abilene, Texas; two sisters, Kathleen Bandy Quick of Indialtantic, Fla. and Gracie Willhite of Danville.
He was predeceased by one son, David Glen Radford.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Erston Young officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Kathleen B. Quick, 2993 Mount Cross Road. Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Harold Roach
DANVILLE, Va. - Harold Raymond Roach, 82, of 458 Williamson Road died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center in Martinsville.
Born Jan. 11, 1917, in Powell, Wyo., Roach was the son of Otto Roach and Harriett Roach. He was married
to Cecile Bryant Roach.
Roach retired in 1982 from Sears and Roebuck. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army Air Corps. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of Danville for 50 years and a member of Mount Pleasant Methodist Church of Blairs.
Roach is survived by his son, David Roach of Danville.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Wyoming.

Kenneth Swaringen
RINGGOLD, Va. - Kenneth Lee Swaringen, 58, of 2587 South Boston Highway, died Monday, September 13, 1999, after one month in Vencor Hospital, Greensboro, N.C., and one year of declining health.
Born June 16, 1941, in Danville, he was the son of Earma Evans Swaringen and Sarah Ethel Mills Swaringen.
He served in the Virginia Army National Guard and lived all his life in Ringgold community. He was employed by Motley Electric Company as an electrician until his retirement due to health reasons.
He was a member of Lakewood Evangelical Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Sarah Leigh Swaringen of Chatham; and one brother, Tommy Lynn Swaringen of Ringgold. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday graveside in Floral Memory Gardens with the Rev. G. David Wilson officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his brother, Tommy L. Swaringen, 2779 South Boston Highway, Route 58 East.

Norman Adams
CHATHAM, Va. - Norman Willard Adams, 55, of 1513 Hodnett Mill Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at his residene.
Born Oct. 9, 1943, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Willard Adams and Mable Brumfield Adams, who survives.
He was married
to Frances Yeatts Adams, who survives.
In addition to his mother of Gretna, and wife of the residence, survivors include one sister, Jeanette A. Barbour of Gretna; and one brother, Bobby Adams of Gretna.
