Gennies Marshall
ROANOKE, Va. - Gennies R. Marshall, 57, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999.
He was a member of the AmVets Post No. 40.
Born Jan. 26, 1942, in Carol County, N.C., he was the son of Stevenson Marshall and Irene Marshall.
Survivors include one daughter, Robin Marshall; five brothers, John W. Marshall, William "Bill" S. Marshall, Roy W. Marshall, Wilco Marshall and Danny Marshall; four sisters, Belva Raymond, Audrey Yeatts, Ellen McElheney and Mary Aque.
A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Sherwood Memorial Park with the Rev. Donnie Marshall officiating.
Oakey's South Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Holland McCubbins
DANVILLE, Va. - Lesley Holland "Cubby" McCubbins, 94, of 836 Gemstone Lane, died Friday, September 17, in Danville Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born July 13, 1905, in Cascade, Virginia, he was the son of the late Dolly Ann Elliott McCubbins and Samuel David McCubbins.
He was married
on April 20, 1935, to Ruby Lynskey McCubbins, who survives.
He was the oldest member of Vandola Baptist Church where he was an active member until his wife's health failed approximately three years ago. He was a member of the Men's Bible Class. Well known in the Brosville/Cascade communities, he worked for several years at the Brosville Cannery.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by seven brothers, Roy T. McCubbins, John Oakey McCubbins, Samuel C. McCubbins, J. Harry McCubbins, W. Lonnie McCubbins, Bennie E. McCubbins, and E. Forrest McCubbins and two sisters, May M. Ragsdale and Carrie M. McBride.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home on Sunday, September 19, 1999, at 2:00 p.m. by the Rev. Dr. J. Leroy Clack. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Danville Life Saving Crew, or the charity of your choice.

Cecile Walker
DANVILLE, Va. - Cecile Cassada Walker, 75, of 417 Skyline Ave., died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, at her residence after a number of years of declining health.
Born March 9, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of David C. Cassada and Madie Sue Jones Cassada.
She was married
June 13, 1942, to Clarence E. Walker, who survives.
She was a charter member of Christian Heritage Church and a homemaker.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Jimmie Wayne Walker of the residence; one daughter, Pamela W. Haley of Danville; two brothers, Douglas "Dee" Cassada and Russell Blair Cassada, both of Danville; four sisters, Waverly C. Scearce, Eloise C. Hudgins, Lois C. Oakes and Virginia C. Simpkins, all of Danville; and three grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Starlette Marie Walker.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Christian Heritage Church with the Rev. Barry Crumpton and the Rev. Gerald Hetrick officiating.
Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the church and at other times at the residence.

Jesse Watts Sr.
VIRGILINA, Va. - Jesse Franklin Watts Sr., 68, of 2150 Shady Grove Church Road, died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at his residence.
Born June 11, 1931, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Charlie Franklin Watts and Beatrice Gravitt Watts.
He retired as a tobacconist with American Tobacco Company after 43 years of service.He was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son, Jesse Franklin Watts Jr. of Virgilina; one daughter, Phyllis W. Vernon of Halifax; two sisters, Joyce Glasscock of Virgilina and Mary Jane W. Epps of Halifax; one grandchild and one step-greatchild.
A funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Shady Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Saturday and at other times at the residence.
Nannie Word
LONG ISLAND, Va. - Nannie Word, 70, of 5018 Buffalo Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at The Unversity of Virginia Hospital, Charottesville.
Born Nov. 3, 1928, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Mrs. Clayton Brooks, who survives, and Giles Brooks.She was married
to Verlie Word, who predeceased her.He was a member of Republican Grove Baptist Church in Nathalie.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Lawrence Brooks and Early Brooks.
In addition to her mother of Newark, Del., survivors include four sons, Leon Word of Long Island, Verlie Marion Word of Newark, Irvin Lee Payne and Milton Crews, both of the residence; one brother, Alexander Brooks of Landover, Md.; five sisters, Ella Boyd, Yvonne Simms and Barbara Jean Butler, all of Newark, Martha Ann Crews of Washington, and Dorothy Beckett of Wilmington; 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Republican Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. L.S. Otey officiating. Burial will be in First Buffalo Baptist Church cemetery.

Johnnie Brandon
DANVILLE, Va. - Johnnie Pointer Brandon, 70, of 181 Bethel Rd., died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 8, 1928 in Halifax County, he was the son of John Woodley and Willie B. Stephens Brandon. He was predeceased by a son, Aldoph Brandon.
He attended the public schools of Halifax County. He was baptized at an early age and joined the Greater Brandon Chapel Baptist Church of Alton. He was a former member of the senior choir.
Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Brandon of Connecticut and Willie Marrietta Davis of Danville; two sons, Johnnie C. Brandon of Ridgeway and Linwood Brandon of Danville; three sisters, Lavernia Malone of Danville, Ola Mae Brandon of Alton and Portia Johnson of Philadelphia, Pa.; two brothers, Napolean Brandon of Alton and Otis Brandon of South Boston; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Greater Brandon Chapel Baptist Church in Alton with the Rev. Darran T. Brandon officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 12-8 p.m. today at the Plenty Funeral Home Chapel in Semora, N.C.
Edna Ferrell
DANVILLE, Va. - Edna Glass Ferrell, 79, of 325 Winstead Drive, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 26, 1920 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Carson Glass and Cornelius F. Glass.
She was married
to Edgar W. Ferrell, predeceased her.
She was a shift worker at the Dan River Mills. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Jeanette F. Waddell of the residence; one sister, Annie Dodson of Danville; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Ocey Gauldin
DANVILLE, Va. - Ocey Wood Gauldin, formerly of 927 Stokes St., died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born in Brosville, she was the daughter of Willis T. Wood and Parthenia Gauldin Wood.
She was married
Sept. 7, 1920, to Claude Swanson Gauldin Sr., who predeceased her Nov. 15, 1968.
She moved to Danville at age three, and was educated in the public schools. She received her musical training at Randolph-Macon College and Stratford College. She was a longtime member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon). She held offices in many auxilliaries of the church and was a chorister for many years. She was a piano teacher for many years and a member of the Danville Historical Society at its onset. She participated in March of Dimes by walking in nine walk-a-thons. She worked for many years with City Beautiful Committee and was a member of the Auxilliary Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 647, as the historian. She was the youngest of five children, all predeceased.
In addition to five members of her immediate family, she was predeceased by one daughter Barbara Gauldin James.
Survivors include one son, Claude Swanson Gauldin Jr. of Roanoke; two daughters, Lynwood G. Pugh and Patricia G. Martin, both of Danville; 12 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at National cemetery, Lee Street with the Elder Edward F. Sparrow and Bishop William Collins officiating.
The family will receive friends Sunday 7-8:30 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Patricia Martin, 650 Holland Road.
Hunter Long
CASCADE, Va. - Hunter Bruce "Buck" Long, 62, of 877 Long Circle, Cascade, died at his residence Friday morning September 17, 1999, after a decline in health of seven months.
Mr. Long was born in the Brosville community of Pittsylvania County on July 24, 1937, a son of the late David Anderson Long and Alma Bowlin Long, who survives.
He was married
to Grace Blackstock Long who survives.
Mr. Long had made his home in the Brosville community all of his life where he was a member of Brosville United Methodist Church. He was a tobacco buyer with the American Tobacco Company for 38 years before retiring.
Survivors in addition to his mother of Brosville and his wife of the residence include two daughters: Nancy Coleman and her husband Dr. Tom Coleman of Lutz, Florida, and Miss Susan Long of Brosville, and three sons: Hunter Bruce Long, Jr., and his wife Denise Long of Brosville, and Michael Kierman of Brosville, and Philip Kierman of Virginia Beach, and two brothers: Jimmy A. Long of Danville, and David A. Long, Jr., of Brosville, and three grandchildren: Jon Philip Pyron, Erica Weatherford, and Blake Gillispie.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday at Brosville United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dave Rochford. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m., and at other times at the residence in the Brosville community.

Little Coy McKenzie
CALLANDS, Va. - Little Coy Michael McKenzie, newborn, of 1513 Mapleton Drive, Lot A, died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 17, 1999, he was the son of Paul McKenzie and Courtney Stone, both of whom survive.
In addition to his parents of the residence, survivors include one brother, Paul Stone Jr. of Callands; maternal grandparents, Hosea Stone and Eunice Stone of Dry Fork; and paternal grandfather, Raymond MacKenzie of Martinsville.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Harold Vann officiating.

Elouise Mullins
ROANOKE, Va. - Elouise Ramsey Mullins, 67, of Roanoke, died Thursday, September 16, 1999, at her home.
Elouise was a longtime member of Melrose Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Sue Mullins.
Surviving are her husband of 47 years, David C. Mullins; her sons and daughters-in-law, Chuck and Robin Mullins of Danville, Va., Terry and Glenna Mullins of Blue Ridge, Va.; her daughter, Brenda Hartman of Roanoke; her grandchildren, Missy, Buddy, Becky and Tyler; her sisters, Shirley Brickey of Troutville and Delma Wade of Roanoke.
A funeral service will be held at Oakey's North Chapel Monday, September 20, 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Larry Sprouse officiating. Interment
will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
