Charles Powell

CLOVER, Va. - Charles Henry Powell, 88, of 5066 Cove Road, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999 at his residence.

Born June 11, 1911 in Halifax County, he was the son of the late Charlie Powell and Jesse Powell.

He was married to Elsie Howard Powell, who predeceased him. He was a member of the Providence Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Helen Francis Lloyd of Clover; two sons, Clarence Davis Powell and Henry Howard Powell, both of Clover; two sisters, Odel Walden of Richmond and Ophelia Lacks of Victoria; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Providence Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Everett Hellmuth officiating. Burial will follow in the family cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Willard and Francis Lloyd, 5012 Cove Road, Clover.

Claude Chattin

DANVILLE, Va. - Claude Henry Chattin, 84, of 660 Audubon Drive, died at his residence Saturday evening, September 18, 1999, after a one year decline in health.

Mr. Chattin was born in Danville on June 24, 1915, a son of the late Mott Albert Chattin and Mattie Gray Chattin.

He was married to Sunshine Leonard Chattin, who survives.

Mr. Chattin had made his home in Danville all of his life where he was the assistant Purchasing Director for Dan River, Inc., before retiring.

He was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church where he was the assistant Sunday School Superintendent.

He was a member of the Young at Heart Club, serving as President, and also serving as President of the Dan River Retired Employees Club. He was past master of Morotock Lodge No. 210 A.F. & A.M. and past Venerable Master of Danville Lodge of Perfection (Scottish Rite.)

He was predeceased by his daughter, Jane Chattin Gray.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one Daughter, Bonnie Chattin Alfriend of Pebble Beach, California; one son: Claude H. Chattin, II of Atlanta, Georgia, two sisters, Hester Motley of Richmond and Mildred Hilliard of Melbourne, Florida, four grandchildren: Kyle T. Alfriend, IV, Kimberly Jane Alfriend, Debra Gray Deyerle and Whitney Lee Chattin; and four Great Grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Thomas J. Brown and the Rev. George Rumney. Interment icon will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 7:00-8:30 p.m., and at other times at the residence.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Danville Cancer Association, 1225 West Main St., Danville, Va. 24541.

Dora Doss

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Dora Wilkerson Doss, 91, of 204 Yates St. died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at The Woodview.

Born Dec. 29, 1907, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Baylos Edward Wilkerson and Mattie Green Elliott Wilkerson.

She was married to Roy Richard Doss, who predeceased her. She was a member of Dan River Baptist Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Elsie Mae D. Worsham of South Boston, Virginia Lee D. Murden of Virginia Beach, Trudy D. Marsh of New Mexico and Shirley D. Lambka of Jacksonville, N.C.; two sons, Roy Doss Jr. of Virginia Beach and Lonnie Franklin Doss of Kinston, N.C.; one sister, Alease Matherly of South Boston; two brothers, William Wilkerson and Dick Wilkerson, both of Danville; 24 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her first husband, she was predeceased by one daughter, Louise Doss and one son, Lawrence E, Doss.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Stewart and the Rev. Paul King officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Elsie Worsham, 204 Yates St.

Annie Duling

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Annie Reeves Duling, 88, of 3004 Cluster Springs Road, and formerly of Richmond, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Oct. 21, 1910, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Willie Thomas Reeves and Minnie Larter Reeves.

She was married to Marion B. Duling, who predeceased her.

She was a retired accountant for A. Lynn Thomas Co. and a member of First Baptist Church in Richmond.

Survivors include three sisters, Elsie Arendall of Halifax, Mattie Cole of Mebane, N.C. and Alice Wells of Semora, N.C.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Halifax Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Don Bryant officiating.

Brooks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

James Farmer

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - James Farmer, 66, of Brooklyn and formerly of Halifax County, Va., died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, in St. Mary's Hospital.

He was born July 26, 1933, in Halifax County.

He was married to Zella Farmer, who survives.

In addition to his wife of Brooklyn, survivors include seven children, Deborah, Darnell, Joanne, Tammie, Stacey, Trina and Christopher, all of Brooklyn; four sisters, Shirley Womack, Geraldine Womack, Edith Womack and Mary Crosby; four brothers, Herbert Henry, Harold Womack, William Henry and David Womack; and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Crawford, Garrett & Burton Funeral Chapel in Halifax, Va., with the Rev. Willie Yancey officiating. Burial will be in New Zion Baptist Church cemetery in Nathalie, Va.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Maxine Barksdale, 8038 Chatham Road, Nathalie.

Lewis Jones

DANVILLE, Va. - Lewis Garfield Jones, 80, of 596 Peacock Acres Trail, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at his residence after a decline in health since 1990.

Born Nov. 12, 1918, in Marion, he was the son of Issac Davis Jones and Minnie J. Jones.

He retired from Dan River Inc. after 35 years of service in the finishing room.

He lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County and Danville and was of the Baptist faith.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served in World War II.

He was married to Louise Wilson Jones on June 15, 1939, who predeceased him.

Survivors include three daughters, Betty L. Dove of Ringgold and Margaret C. Jones Riddle and Janice M. Inman, both of Danville; two sons, James M. Jones Sr. and Bobby L. Jones Sr., both of Danville; one sister, Peggy J. Grishaw of Marion; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service with military honors by the American Legion Post No. 1097 will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr. officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, Betty L. Dove, 3866 South Boston Highway, Ringgold.

Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Street chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

George Brannon

DANVILLE, Va. - George Clifton Brannon, 74, of 508 Oxford Place, Surrey Hills, died Monday, September 20, 1999, at his residence.

Born April 6, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Arthur Fletcher Brannon Sr. and Mary Vaughan Brannon.

He was married on December 5, 1953, to Eunice Turner Brannon, who survives.

He was a member of Burton Memorial Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder. He was a World War II veteran of the United States Army, serving in the European Theater. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 647. He was retired from Coca-Cola Bottling Company.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Leigh Brannon Blount and Edward O. Blount Jr. of Ringgold; two grandchildren, Brannon Blount and Edward Blount III and one sister Lucille Louhoff of Danville.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 22, 1999, 11:00 a.m. at Townes Memorial Chapel. Rev. Ralph E. McCormack will be conducting the services. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 21, 1999, 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home. Other times the family will be at the residence.

In lieu of flowers the family of George Clifton Brannon suggest that donations be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew.

James Guill

The Honorable James Lee Guill, age 62, passed away Friday, September 17, 1999, after a lengthy struggle with cancer.

Judge Guill retired August 3, 1999, after serving the Federal Government for 19 years. Originally from Laurel Grove, Va., he graduated with a BS in Business Administration from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and received his law degree from the University of Richmond, T.C. Williams School of Law in 1966.

Judge Guill had been a member of the Virginia Bar Association since 1966.

He served in Richmond as a prosecuting attorney for the Commonwealth of Virginia, and later as a private criminal defense attorney, also in Richmond. In 1980, he was appointed Administrative Law Judge for the U.S. Department of Labor, serving in Cincinnati, Ohio, Hampton, Va., and Washington, D.C.

In 1988, Judge Guill was appointed Associate Chief Administrative Law Judge for the Department of Labor.

Jim Guill is lovingly remembered by his wife of 35 years, Martha Tetterton Guill, his children, Michael and Angela Guill, his brother John H. Guill of Aiken, S.C., and his mother Trixie Hodnett Guill. Jim was predeceased by his father, Jesse H. Guill of Laurel Grove, Va.

A memorial service will be held at McLean Baptist Church, 1367 Chain Bridge Rd., McLean, Va., on Wednesday, September 22, 1999, at 4:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the National Kidney Cancer Association, 1234 Sherman Ave., Suite 203, Evanston, Il 60202-1375.

Old Town Funeral Choices, Alexandria, is in charge of arrangements.

Little Coy McKenzie

CALLANDS, Va. - Little Coy Michael McKenzie, newborn, of 1513 Mapleton Drive, Lot A, died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 17, 1999, he was the son of Paul McKenzie and Courtney Stone McKenzie, both of whom survive.

In addition to his parents of the residence, survivors include one brother, Paul McKenzie Jr. of Callands; maternal grandparents, Hosea Stone and Eunice Stone of Dry Fork; and paternal grandfather, Raymond MacKenzie of Martinsville.

A graveside service was held Monday at Highland Burial Park.

Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
