Roy Parris Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Roy James Parrish Jr., 55, of 140 Cambridge Circle, Danville, died at his home after a two and half month illness.
Born December 20, 1943 in Danville, he was the son of Roy James Parrish and Miriam Stowe Parrish.
He was married
to Vivian Parsons Parrish on August 24, 1968, who survives.
Mr. Parrish was a graduate of Whitmell High School. He received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Business Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
He did additional graduate work at the University of Virginia and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
He attended numerous technology seminars and took a variety of technology courses during his professional career.
In 1971, he earned certification in data processing from the Data Processing Management Association. He was a Cisco Certified Network Associate, Microsoft Certified Professional, Microsoft Certified Professional Plus Internet, and a Microsoft Systems Engineer.
He began his professional career in 1966 at Danville Technical Institute, the predecessor of Danville Community College. He was a well known professor of Information System Technology and a past Coordinator of the Center for Business, Industry and Government at Danville Community College.
In addition, he had worked as a systems analyst for the City of Danville, a consultant for Danville Public Schools and a network consultant for businesses in both Virginia and North Carolina.
He was the author of several publications and articles on accounting and computer services and concepts.
He was an active member of Swansonville United Methodist Church where he served on the administration board in roles of chairperson of the administrative board, chairperson of the pastor-parish relations committee, member of the council on ministries, member of the finance committee and lay delegate to the Annual United Methodist Conference.
He was currently serving as chairperson of the administration board and chairperson of the pastor-parish relations committee.
He was a past member of the Danville Jaycees and Sertoma Club and past president of the Danville Evening Lions Club. He was a member of Danville Arts and Humanities.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include several aunts and uncles and two special children of the Parrish extended family, Rhonda Gilliam Hollie and James Ronald Gilliam Jr.
A funeral will be held Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999 at Westover Wrenn-Yeatts Chapel at 2:00 p.m. with the Reverend Linwood Daniel, retired minister of Swansonville United Methodist church, officiating and a reading by Frances H. Lacy, member of Swansonville United Methodist Church. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999, at Westover Wrenn-Yeatts and at other times at the residence.
The family suggests that memorials be made to Swansonville United Methodist Church; 13081 Franklin Turnpike, Dry Fork, Va. 24549.
Joe Raines
DANVILLE, Va. - Joseph "Joe" H. Raines, 74, of 108 Stanley Court, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center for three days after four years of declining health.
Born Sept. 26, 1924, in Saluda, N.C., he was the son of Joe Cephas Raines and Mary Garrett Raines.
He was married
Nov. 17, 1945, to Lillie Mae Walker Raines, who survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II.
He spent most of his life in Danville where he worked for Dan River Inc., for 35 years before retiring.
He was of the Baptist Faith and a member of the American Legion Memorial Post No. 325.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Nancy R. White of Providence, N.C., and Sandra W. Poss of the residence; one sister, Annie Beasley of Berryville; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by four brothers: Theodore Raines, Hannon Raines, Desmond Raines and Aaron Raines.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Wallace officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post No. 1097 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday evening and at other times at the residence.
Bertha Whitlow
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Bertha Harris Whitlow, 94, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston.
Born Jan. 24, 1905, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Charles Harris and Rosa Weatherford Harris.
She was married
to Charles L. Whitlow, who predeceased her.
She was a homemaker and a member of First Cross Roads Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Marie W. Turner of Hanover and Jean W. Reaves of South Boston; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Louise Paris.
Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Cross Roads Baptist Church cemetery in Turbeville with the Rev. Kenneth Williams officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of Ernest and Jean Reaves.

Myrtle Williams
CANA, Va. - Myrtle Marie Jones Williams, 65, of 903 Paul's Creek Road, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at her residence.
Born Oct. 21, 1933, in Carroll County, Va., she was the daughter of Earlie W. Jones and Arilda Jones.
She was married
to Gifford Lee Williams, who survives.
She was owner and operator of Myrtle Williams Home Interiors and was a member of Pauls Creek Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Gail McGhee of Danville, and Terry Leigh Jones of Cana; two sons, Larry Dale Williams of Danville and Wade Williams of Rutherford, N.C.; five sisters, Goldie Combs and Ollie McCreary, both of Cana, Sally Dowell of Danville, Earlene McHone of Mt. Airy, N.C. and Jerlene Neubauer of Roanoke; one brother, Robert Jones of Cana; 13 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one sister, Ann Bryant; five brothers, Earlie Arlis Jones, Everett Wallace Jones, Henry Elmo Jones, Alfred Garner Jones and Earl Ray Jones.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pauls Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Tony Holder officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy.

Lloyd Bouldin
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Lloyd Wesley Bouldin, 30, of 837 Traver Ave., died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Dec. 12, 1968, in Baltimore, Md., he was the son of Irene Bouldin, who survives.
He was married
to Lisa Bouldin, who survives.
In addition to his mother of Raleigh, N.C., and his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Lauren Bouldin of South Boston; three brothers, Floyd Bouldin and Julian Bouldin, both of South Boston and Frank Sydnor Jr. of Durham, N.C.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Crawford Garrett & Burton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roger Ford officiating. Burial will be in Rose Garden cemetery.

George Brannon
DANVILLE, Va. - George Clifton Brannon, 74, of 508 Oxford Place, Surrey Hills, died Monday, September 20, 1999, at his residence.
Born April 6, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Arthur Fletcher Brannon Sr. and Mary Vaughan Brannon.
He was married
on December 5, 1953, to Eunice Turner Brannon, who survives.
He was a member of Burton Memorial Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder. He was a World War II veteran of the United States Army, serving in the European Theater. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 647. He was retired from Coca-Cola Bottling Company.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Leigh Brannon Blount and Edward O. Blount Jr. of Ringgold; two grandchildren, Brannon Blount and Edward Blount III and one sister Lucille Louhoff of Danville.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 22, 1999, 11:00 a.m. at Townes Memorial Chapel. Rev. Ralph E. McCormack will be conducting the services. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
Hazel Mayhew
GRETNA, Va. - Hazel Davis Mayhew, 88, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home where she resided for four years.
Born March 31, 1911, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Ernie Davis and Minnie Guthrie Davis.
She was married
to Jessie William Mayhew Sr., who predeceased her.
She was a member of Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. Jessie W. Mayhew Jr. of Danville and Harold Lee Mayhew of Gretna; one daughter, Jane M. Burnette of Danville; two sisters, Bernice Franklin of Roanoke and Elner Shelton of Brookneal; one brother, Robert Davis of Laurel, Md.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Gretna Burial Park with the Rev. R.G. Rowland and the Rev. W.D. Lilly officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her son, Harold Mayhew, 305 Vaden Drive, Gretna.

Mellie Richardson
DANVILLE, Va. - Mellie Sherrill Richardson, 91, of 446 Grandville Drive, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born August 16, 1908, in Sherrills Ford, N.C., she was the daughter of Mary Elizabeth Sherrill and Jesse Roby Sherrill.
She was married
to Joseph Daniel Richardson, who predeceased her.
She was a retired secretary/bookkeeper after 40 years of service with Richardson Hodges Company. She was a member of Chatham Heights United Methodist Church, a member of Mellie Richardson Circle at Chatham Heights United Methodist Church and member of Veterans of Foreign War Auxillary in Martinsville.
Survivors include two daughters, Martha R. Roach of Danville and Bobbye Alderman of Norfolk; one stepson, Paul J. Richardson of Martinsville; one sister, Christine Morano of Tacoma, Wash.; one brother, Sammy Sherrill of Pfafftown, N.C.; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sons, Philip Sherrill Richardson and Frederick Allen Richardson; one stepdaughter, Nancy Koger; one sister, Mary Bostick; and one brother, Rufus Sherrill.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at McKee-Stone Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Derflinger officiating. Interment
will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
