William Taylor
DANVILLE, Va. - William Andrew Taylor, 42, of 161 Melbourne Circle, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, in Springfield, Missouri.
Born May 23, 1957, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John Randolph Taylor, who survives, and the late Doris May Jones Taylor.
He was married
to Virginia Taylor, who survives.
He was formerly employed as a Nursing Assistant at Camelot Nursing Home.
In addition to his wife of the residence and father of Chatham, survivors include one daughter, Danyelle L. Taylor of the residence; two sons, William Andrew Taylor Jr. and Johnathan L. Taylor, both of the residence; one sister, Phyllis Walker of Martinsville; three brothers, Larry Taylor of Ridgeway, Ralph Taylor and Leroy Taylor, both of Arkansas.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home with the Rev. Peggy Motley officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
John Wray Sr.
BLAIRS, Va. - John Daniel Wray Sr., 88, of 240 Copperhead Road, died Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 21, 1999, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born March 24, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John Pete Wray and Mary Murphy Wray.
He was married
to Rena A. Wray, who predeceased him.
He was a retired farmer and was of the Baptist Faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Joan Carol Hodnett of Florence, Ky. and Merry W. Sims of Chatham; two sons, John D. Wray Jr. of Blairs and Samuel L. Wray of Ringgold; four sisters, Callie Stanley and Catherine McKinney, both of Pelham, N.C., and Molley Alvis and Jane Huckstep, both of Richmond; one brother, Herbert Wray of Richmond; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Maynard Baker Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Maynard Baker Jr., 90, of 1768 Barker Road, Ringgold, died Tuesday September 21, 1999 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born August 13, 1909, in Danville, he was the son of Maynard Barker Sr. and Betty Barker.
He was married
on December 30, 1935, to Melissa N. Barker who survives.
He was a lifetime farmer in Ringgold. He held various positions in tobacco crop insurance and sales. He was a member of Ringgold Baptist Church, where he was Sunday school secretary for 40 years.
Along with his wife, he is survived by three sons, Donald Wayne Barker of Rockingham, N.C., Maynard Barker III of Staunton and Howard Neal Barker of Salisbury, Md.; one sister, Evangeline Wells of Portsmouth; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Ringgold Baptist Church with the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home. Other times, the family will be at the residence at 1768 Barker Road, Ringgold.
Ruby Mae Wilson Cobbs
DANVILLE, Va. - Ruby Mae Wilson Cobbs, "Big Mama," was called to rest on September 20, 1999.
She leaves to remember her love, her lifetime companion, Daniel Witcher, and ten children, Yvonne Johnson, James Cobbs, Mary Cobbs, Edith McLaughlin, John Cobbs, Patsy Cobbs, Ronnie Cobbs, Sandra Kenyon, Elder Preston Cobbs and Natalie Cobbs.
Ruby was predeceased by one son, Charlie Cobbs, who passed in 1982. She also leaves two brothers, Russell Wilson and Charlie Wilson; two sisters, Rebecca Rountree and Betty Bethel; twenty-two grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, including two of whom she raised as her own, Phyllis Dixon and Ruby Cobbs (Little Ruby), who was her namesake.
"Big Mama" loved and touched the lives of us all. She was truly the driving force of her family. She shall be remembered as the very strong tree whom loving branches overshadowed many with love. Ms. Ruby touched the hearts of all who knew her.
It was a blessing to everyone who had the fortune to spend time in her presence.
She shared wisdom, knowledge and understanding to all who took time to listen.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Jesse Ferrell
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Jesse Owen "Doc" Ferrell, 78, 7086 Mountain Road, Halifax, died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston.
Born Feb. 17, 1921, in Halifax County, he was the son Jessie Bee Ferrell and Iola Lewis Ferrell. A veteran of the Navy, he was a retired truck driver with Burlington Industries.
He was married
to Ruth Allgood Ferrell.
In addition to his wife of Halifax, survivors include one son, Gerald Owen Ferrell of Summerville, Fla.; one daughter, Janice F. "Jan" Chandler of Halifax; two brothers, Morton Ferrell and L.C. Ferrell of Halifax; four sisters, Catherine F. McDowell, Ellen F. Elliott and Myrtle F. Moore, all of Halifax, and Edith F. Boyd of North Carolina; and one grandson.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Halifax Memorial Gardens in South Boston.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence.
Robert Osborne
CHATHAM, Va. - Robert Levi Osborne, 76, of 2481 Toshes Road, Chatham, died Wednesday September 22, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 23, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late John Walter Osborne and Rosa Barbour Osborne.
He was a member of New Bethel Church of the Brethren.
He is survived by four daughters, Ann Norcutt, Margaret Moore, Sandra Gowen and Robyn Osborne; three sons, R.V Osborne, Jeff Osborne, Robert Levi Osborne Jr.; three sisters, Hilda Pruitt, Martha Adkins, Sue Hedrick; one brother, Randolph Osborne; 19 grandchildren; 14 stepgrandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Robby Osborne, five sisters and three brothers.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m Friday at New Bethel Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Alvery Parr and Curtis English officiating. Interment
will be in the New Bethel Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Scott Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Roy Parrish Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Roy James Parrish Jr., 55, of 140 Cambridge Circle, Danville, died at his home after a two and half month illness.
Born December 20, 1943 in Danville, he was the son of Roy James Parrish and Miriam Stowe Parrish.
He was married
to Vivian Parsons Parrish on August 24, 1968, who survives.
Mr. Parrish was a graduate of Whitmell High School. He received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Business Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He did additional graduate work at the University of Virginia and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He attended numerous technology seminars and took a variety of technology courses during his professional career. In 1971, he earned certification in data processing from the Data Processing Management Association. He was a Cisco Certified Network Associate, Microsoft Certified Professional, Microsoft Certified Professional Plus Internet, and a Microsoft Systems Engineer.
He began his professional career in 1966 at Danville Technical Institute, the predecessor of Danville Community College.
He was a well known professor of Information System Technology and a past Coordinator of the Center for Business, Industry and Government at Danville Community College. In addition, he had worked as a systems analyst for the City of Danville, a consultant for Danville Public Schools and a network consultant for businesses in both Virginia and North Carolina.
He was the author of several publications and articles on accounting and computer services and concepts.
He was an active member of Swansonville United Methodist Church where he served on the administrative board in roles of chairperson of the administrative board, chairperson of the pastor-parish relations committee, member of the council on ministries, member of the finance committee and lay delegate to the Annual United Methodist Conference.
He was currently serving as chairperson of the administrative board and chairperson of the pastor-parish relations committee.
He was a past member of the Danville Jaycees and Sertoma Club and past president of the Danville Evening Lions Club.
He was a member of Danville Arts and Humanities.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include several aunts and uncles and two special children of the Parrish extended family, Rhonda Gilliam Hollie and James Ronald Gilliam Jr.
A funeral will be held Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999 at Westover Wrenn-Yeatts Chapel at 2:00 p.m. with the Reverend Linwood Daniel, retired minister of Swansonville United Methodist church, officiating and a reading by Frances H. Lacy, member of Swansonville United Methodist Church.
Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999, at Westover Wrenn-Yeatts and at other times at the residence.

Ronnie Smith
DANVILLE, Va. - Ronnie Wade Smith, 43, 104 Dedes Drive, Madison, N.C., formerly of Danville, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., after a short illness.
He was the son of Berlie Smith, who survives.
In addition to his mother, survivors include one brother, Taylor Smith of Yanceyville, N.C.; two sisters, Polly Biggs of Mayodan, N.C., Corky Buechler of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Jean Hofler of South Hill.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Ray Funeral Home Chapel in Madison. Burial will be in the Glenns Chapel Church cemetery.
Coleman White
DANVILLE, Va. - Coleman "Baby Face" White, 75, 880 Grove St., died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 6, 1923, he was married
to Mary Broadnax White.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Priscilla Brister of San Francisco; two sons, Everett "Ricky" White and Richard A. White, both of Danville; and one sister, Nazetta Hinton of Philadelphia; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Beavers Funeral Home Chapel, 355 Holbrook St., with the Rev. Wayne Williams officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service at 880 Grove St.
John Witcher
SANDY LEVEL, Va. - John Edward Witcher, 85, 1456 Star Land Drive, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999, in the Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital in Rocky Mount.
Born Oct. 27, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John Witcher and Mary Mayes Witcher. His wife was Sally E. Witcher. He was a retired self-employed farmer.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn White and Lola Langley; and two brothers, William Witcher and James Richard Witcher.
Survivors include one daughter, Ruth Edna Coles of Sandy Level; three sisters, Nonie Smith of Capital Heights, Md., Cecelia Allen of Wheton, Md., and Christine Edwards of Sandy Level; and one granddaughter.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday from the chapel of Miller Funeral Home by the Rev. Taylor Toliver and the Rev. James Pearson. Burial will be in the Witcher family cemetery at Sandy Level.

DANVILLE, Va. - David Chandler, 80, of 520 Worsham St., died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at his residence.
Born May 27, 1919, in Kingstree, S.C., he was the son of Joseph Chandler and Rextana Chandler.
He was married
to Flossie McClary Chandler, who predeceased him Jan. 12, 1980.
He was a self-employed contractor.
Survivors include one son, Naeem Salaam of the residence; six sisters, Virlie Griffen and Pearl Tisdale, both of Kingstree, S.C., Flossie Lowery and Nancy Liston, both of Rochester, N.Y., Mattie Cusaak and Mamie Canty, both of Florence, S.C.; two brothers, Clifford Chandler and Joseph Chandler, both of Rochester, N.Y.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his stepmother.
