Irma Strauss
Mrs. Irma Johnson Strauss, 91, of 15305 N.C. Hwy. 119 North, Semora, N.C., died Thursday, September 30, 1999, at the Brian Center, Yanceyville, N.C.
She was born July 30, 1908, in Wake County, North Carolina, the daughter of Robert Hupton Johnson and Frances Prince Johnson, both deceased.
She worked for Social Security in Washington, D.C. and retired from North Carolina State College in 1942. She was a member of Yanceyville United Methodist Church for 20 years. A member of Semora United Methodist Church and a homemaker.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Walter Strauss, in 1986. She was also predeceased by her granddaughter Denise W. Hill.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Jean Wall of Semora, N.C.; one brother, Graham Johnson of Burlington, N.C.
She is also survived by: three grandchildren; Ben Wall, Glenn Wall and Mike Wall; and five great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Yanceyville United Methodist church cemetery, by Rev. Michael Roach and Rev. Ross O'Neal.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Marley Funeral Home, Yanceyville, N.C. At other times the family will be at the home of her daughter, at 15305 N.C. Hwy. 119 N. Semora, N.C.
Mildred Swann
DANVILLE, Va. - Mildred Myers Swann, 79, of 159 Davenport St., off North Main Street, died suddenly Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, after five days at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 9, 1920, in the Blanche Community of Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of George Myers and Minnie Lanier Chandler Myers.
She was married
to William Thomas Swann, who survives.
She lived all her life in the Danville area where she was a homemaker. She was a member of Woodberry Hills Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three sons, the Rev. Ronald Swann of Covington, Ga., Richard Swann of Roanoke, and Tommy Swann of the residence; three brothers, Julian Myers of Blanche, N.C., Thomas Myers of Vernon Hill, N.C., and Monroe Myers of Yanceyville, N.C.; two sisters, Ellen M. Turner and Thelma M. Hicks, both of Yanceyville; and three grandchildren.
A funeral was 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Lewis P. Harris officiating. Burial was in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive at the residence.
Reed Tujo
KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Reed Tujo, age 36, of 4932 Druid Hills Court, Kingsport, Tennessee, died Thursday morning, September 30, 1999, in Mint Hill, North Carolina.
Mr. Tujo was born in Buloxi, Mississippi on April 3, 1963, a son of Phillip Tujo and Mary Gentry Berg, both of whom survive.
Mr. Tujo had spent his early life in Chicago, Illinois, and Danville. He later traveled to various cities with his job at Rust Construction Company where he was a supervisor. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Kingsport, Tennessee.
Survivors in addition to his father of Chicago, Illinois and his mother of Danville, include one sister: Lori Horsley of Danville, and two brothers: Larry Perry of Cleveland, North Carolina, and Joe Perry of Houston, Texas, and his fiancee: Pam Anderson of Kingsport, Tennessee.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Dr. Doug Barber. The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m., and at other times at the residence of his mother, Mary Berg, at 184 Howerton Bottom Road, Lot 19.
Estelle Wilson
DANVILLE, Va. - Estelle Dalton Wilson, 94, of 106 Cathy Drive, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, where she was a resident for eight months, after several years of declining health.
Born Sept. 10, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Anslum Tazwell Dalton and Havanna Jane Shelton Dalton.
She lived most of her life in Danville and retired from Dan River Inc. 4-A Weave, Schoolfield Division after 35 years of service. She was a member of the Bannister Spring Primitive Baptist Church and a member of Dan River Retiree Club.
Survivors include one son, Aaron R. Wilson of 29 Palms, Calif.; one daughter, Audrey W. Newman of Danville; four sisters, Irma D. Dodson, Gladys D. Giles, Phylis D. Mills and Gloria D. Gosney, all of Danville; 7 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Adrian T. Wilson and three brothers, Acie L. Dalton, James Pyrtle Dalton and Marvin B. Dalton; and three sisters, Magdaline D. Mills, Ruth Dalton and Hazel Dalton.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Elder Melvin Shelton, Elder H.P. Somers and Elder Troy Simpson officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Audrey W. Newman, 106 Cathy Drive, off Starmont Drive.
Waverly Earl Watkins Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Waverly Watkins Sr., 78, of 422 Freeze Road, died Friday at his residence.
Born Feb. 16, 1921 in Danville, he was a son of the Warner Edward and Dora Carter Watkins. He was educated in the Danville public school system and was a graduate of the Atlanta Georgia School of Mortuary Science. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was married
to Virginia Finley Watkins, who survives.
Mr. Watkins was a licensed embalmer for more than 50 years. He was affiliated with Harvey's Funeral Home, Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home in Roanoke and Kent, Ballou and Crowder Funeral Home in South Boston before becoming co-founder and president of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home. He was a member of Loyal Baptist Church, where he served on the trustee board for many years, and was a member of American Legion Post 29.
In addition to his wife, Virginia, of the residence, he is survived by a daughter, Wanda W. McDowell, of Danville; a son, Waverly Watkins Jr., of Danville; a sister, Mattie W. Shaw, of Danville; a daughter-in-law, Kimberly C. Watkins; a son-in-law, George McDowell; two grandsons, Waverly Watkins III and Warner Watkins II,and a host of other relatives and close friends.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Pemberton Watkins and Benjamin Watkins.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Funeral services for Mr. Waverly Watkins Sr. will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday from Loyal Baptist Church. Entombment with full military rites by American Legion Post 29 will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Ressie O'Neil Williamson
DANVILLE, Va. - Ressie O. Williamson, 102, of 306 Holbrook St., died Thursday, September 30, 1999 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born February 9, 1897, she was a daughter of the William J. and Nora O'Neil Williamson. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Hampton University and was a teacher in Asbury Park, N.J. for many years.
Survivors include: two nieces, Colleen Dodson and Jacqueline Dumas, both of Danville; a nephew, James Brown of Danville and a host of other nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, October 4, 1999, at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Serenus Churn officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill cemetery.

Ellen Callands
GRETNA, Va. - Ellen Callands, 81, of 449 Hodnett Road, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born in Pittsylvania County on April 1, 1918, she was the daughter of Eddie Lewis and Fannie Kelley Lewis.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Clara Staggs; two sons, Raleigh and Darrel Callands; one sister, Geneva Lewis Crews; and four brothers, Irvin T. Lewis, John Lewis, Eddie Lewis Jr., and James A. Lewis.
She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where she served as mother of the church, deaconess, and as a member of the kitchen committee and missionary circle.
She is survived by her husband, Lewis Callands of the residence; one daughter, Belinda Hughes of Maryland; two sons, Lewis Callands Jr. and Deroy Callands, both of Washington; five sisters, Nannie Hughes of Washington, D.C., Lillian Greene and Pearl Greene, both of Norwalk, Conn., Frances Wagstaff of Leesburg, N.C., and Gracie Thompson of Connecticut; one brother, Richard Lewis of Philadelphia; her stepmother, Ruth Lewis Coles of Danville; one adopted sister, Gertrude Benefield of Washington; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Nathaniel Jones officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

H. Laddie Clark
DANVILLE, Va. - Henry Laddie Clark, 67, of 8763 Martinsville Highway, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at Northern Hospital in Mount Airy, N.C.
Born April 21, 1932, in Oxford, N.C., he was the son of Norman Clark and Ruth Sizemore Clark.
He served in the U.S. Army in the Korean conflict. He resided in Portsmouth before moving to the Danville area in 1962 where he owned and operated Clarks Business Machines Inc. in Danville prior to his retirement. He was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Helen White Clark of the residence; one son, Gary Clark of Danville; one daughter, Bonnie Lee Clark of Seattle; and one sister, Ruth C. Currin of Oxford, N.C.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. J. Leroy Clack officiating.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, 7:30-8:30 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence.
Robert Coleman
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Curtis Coleman, 79, of 2869 North Main St., died Sunday Oct. 3, 1999, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Aug. 14, 1920, he was the son of Robert R. Coleman and Mary Wade Coleman. He spent most of his life in the Martinsville and Roanoke area.
He moved to Danville in 1977. He was a member of North Main Baptist Church. He worked at Lester Lumber Company until retirement due to disability.He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II.
Survivors include three half brothers, Marshall D. Coleman of Hawaii, Warren Coleman and Luther Coleman, both of Martinsville; two sisters, Jessie C. Perry and Thelma C. Hammock, both of Danville; and one half sister, Ruby Haley of Danville.
He was predeceased by one brother, Garnett N. Coleman; one half brother, Ryland R. Coleman; one sister, Irene C. Hart, and one half sister, Ruth Haley.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eddie Davis and the Rev. Kyle Flora officiating.
Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens with graveside military honors by American Legion Memorial Post 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends Monday 7-8:30 p.m. at Barker Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence.
Lucille Flowers
DANVILLE, Va. - Lucille Flowers, of 398 Hawthorne Drive, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 8, 1909, in Poquoson, she was the daughter of Sydney and Blanche Moore.
She was married
in April 1933, to Bert Flowers, who predeceased her on August 27, 1991.
She was educated at Eastman School of Business in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Prior to moving to Danville, Flowers was employed as secretary to the president of Newport News Shipbuilding Co.
She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Danville Golf Club and the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History.
She was a member of First Baptist Church since 1936.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary Ceile Ogburn of Winston Salem, N.C., Ellen Bridgers of Wilmington, N.C., and Carolyn F. Wilson of Lake Bluff, Ill.; one brother, Fitzhugh Moore of Hartfield; one sister, Blanche Pitts of Newport News; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Joey Faucette officiating. Interment
will follow at Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Stewart Neal
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Stewart W. Neal, 81, of Huntsville, Ala., died Wednesday, September 29, 1999 in Phoenix, Ariz.
Born January 13, 1918, in Danville, Va., he was the son of Walter Neal and Ida May Compton Neal.
He was married
to Ruby Overby Neal, who died June 30, 1988.
He had been a resident of Huntsville since 1985. He was active in the Moose and Eagles organizations. He participated in several bowling leagues and enjoyed ballroom dancing.
He is survived by two sons, Thomas W. Neal of Huntsville, and James S. Neal of Navarre, Fla.; one brother, J. Edward Neal of Danville, Va.; one sister, Ila Canupp of Danville, Va.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday by Laughlin Funeral Home in Huntsville. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Danville Memorial Garden, with the Rev. Lamarr Mooneyham officiating.
