Waverly Watkins Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Waverly Watkins Sr., 78, of 422 Freeze Road, died Friday at his residence.
Born Feb. 16, 1921 in Danville, he was a son of the Warner Edward and Dora Carter Watkins.
He was educated in the Danville public school system and was a graduate of the Atlanta Georgia School of Mortuary Science.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was married
to Virginia Finley Watkins, who survives.
Mr. Watkins was a licensed embalmer for more than 50 years. He was affiliated with Harvey's Funeral Home, Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home in Roanoke and Kent, Ballou and Crowder Funeral Home in South Boston before becoming co-founder and president of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home. He was a member of Loyal Baptist Church, where he served on the trustee board for many years, and was a member of American Legion Post 29.
In addition to his wife, Virginia, of the residence, he is survived by a daughter, Wanda W. McDowell, of Danville; a son, Waverly Watkins Jr., of Danville; a sister, Mattie W. Shaw, of Danville; a daughter-in-law, Kimberly C. Watkins; a son-in-law, George McDowell; two grandsons, Waverly Watkins III and Warner Watkins II,and a host of other relatives and close friends.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Pemberton Watkins and Benjamin Watkins.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Funeral services for Mr. Waverly Watkins Sr. will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday from Loyal Baptist Church. Entombment with full military rites by American Legion Post 29 will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Ressie Williamson
DANVILLE, Va. - Ressie O. Williamson, 102, of 306 Holbrook St., died Thursday, September 30, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born February 9, 1897, she was a daughter of William J. and Nora O'Neil Williamson. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
She was a graduate of Hampton University and was a teacher in Asbury Park, N.J., for many years.
Survivors include two nieces, Colleen Dodson and Jacqueline Dumas, both of Danville; a nephew, James Brown of Danville and many other nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Serenus Churn officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill cemetery.

Grady Blake, Sr.
ALTAVISTA, Va. - Grady Ray Blake, Sr., 77, of 3446 Wards Road, died Monday morning, Oct. 4, 1999, at Virginia Baptist Hospital after a long illness.
Born May 3, 1922, in Rockingham, N.C., he was the son of Stanback Martin Blake and Sallie Anne Ballard.
He was married
to Irene S. Parker Blake.
He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of Penuel Baptist Church, Elks Lodge No. 321, and Moose Lodge No. 1727. He retired from Griffin Pipe Co.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Grady R. Blake Jr. of Forest, and Calvin W. Blake of Lynchburg; one stepson, Doug Parker of Orlando, Fla.; one stepdaughter Donnie P. Grizzard; four sisters, Myrtle Dawkins, Ruth Speight, Clara Smith, all of Lynchburg and Wilma Knight of Rockingham, N.C.; and five grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one brother and one sister.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Penuel Baptist Church. Burial will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel and at other times at the residence.
Robert Coleman
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Curtis Coleman, 79, of 2869 North Main St., died Sunday morning Oct. 3, 1999, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Aug. 14, 1920, he was the son of Robert R. Coleman and Mary Wade Coleman.
He spent most of his life in the Martinsville and Roanoke area before moving to Danville in 1977. He was a member of North Main Baptist Church. He worked at Lester Lumber Company until retirement due to disability. He was a veteran of the United States Army served during World War II.
Survivors include three half brothers, Marshall D. Coleman of Hawaii, Warren Coleman and Luther Coleman, both of Martinsville; two sisters, Jessie C. Perry and Thelma C. Hammock, both of Danville; and one half sister, Ruby Haley of Danville and one half brother, George N. Coleman Hudson of Rocky Mount.
He was predeceased by one brother, Garnett N. Coleman; one half brother, Ryland R. Coleman; one sister, Irene C. Hart, and one half sister, Ruth Haley.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eddie Davis and the Rev. Kyle Flora officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens with graveside military honors by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Eddie Kirby
HALIFAX, Va. - Eddie Junior Kirby, 28, of 1094 Union Church Road, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Person County Memorial Hospital in Roxboro.
Born March 6, 1971, in Halifax County, he was the son of Eddie Kirby and Sallie Kirby, who survive.
In addition to his parents of Halifax County, survivors include one daughter, Jymiece Kirby of Meherrin; one sister, Joann Hankins of Halifax.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Union Grove CME Church in South Boston with the Rev. Ronald Dean officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery. there will be a viewing one hou prior to the service.

Charlie Meadows
CHATHAM, Va. - Charlie Lee Meadows, 82, of 5129 Halifax Road, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 24, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Eddie Meadows and Blanche Davis Meadows.
He was married
to Gracie Moser Meadows, who predeceased him, and later to Mamie Reed Meadows, who survives.
He was a member of Church of God of Prophecy, Java, and was a retired farmer.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, C. Leon Meadows of Chatham; two daughters, Linda M. Reynolds of Chatham and Geraldine M. Wilson of Gretna; two sisters, Elna Petty of Gretna and Pauline Moser of Halifax.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of God of Prophecy, Java, with the Rev. Edward L. Pope and the Rev. Glibert Dunbar officiating.

Effie Pickeral
DANVILLE, Va. - Effie Doss Pickeral, 80, 1845 Rainbow Circle, formerly of 197 Northwest Blvd., died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born March 3, 1919, in Greensboro, N.C., she was the daughter of Coleman A. Doss and Ida Pickeral Doss.
She was married
to Reuben T. Pickeral, who predeceased her Feb. 14, 1987.
She was a member of Bannister Springs Primitive Baptist Church for 30 or more years. She was a seamstress for Tate's Manufacturing.
Survivors include two daughters, Glenda P. Waller and Sandra P. Stephens, both of Danville; one sister, Mamie Saunders of Danville; one brother, Clarence Doss of Somerville, N.C.; and one half-sister, Bessie Milam of Roanoke; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one sister, Eva Hall; and two brothers, Odie Doss and Jesse Doss.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Elders Melvin Shelton, H.P. Somers and Troy Simpson officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Susie Robertson
DANVILLE, Va. - Susie Ann Robertson, 45, of 855 1/2 Stokes St., died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at her residence of natural causes.
Born Dec. 8, 1953, she was the daughter of Mary Sue Gunter, who survives. She was the foster daughter of Levie Jenkins and Margaret Burton Jenkins.
She was married
to Donald Robertson, who predeceased her.
She was a member of the Gospel Prayer Mission Church, Milton, N.C.
In addition to her mother of Danville, and foster father, survivors include two daughters, Wendy Jones and Kizzy Jones, both of Danville; one son, Johnathan Jones of Danville; one sister, Trellis Walters of Danville; two brothers, Bishop John M. Burton Sr. and Clayton Adams, both of Danville; and one grandchild.
She was predeceased by her foster mother.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Beavers Funeral Home with the Bishop John Matthew Burton Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

Susie Wilson
NEW YORK - Susie Gunn Wilson, 83, of 436 W. 27th St., died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at the residence of her daughter, 702 North Main St., Danville.
Born March 7, 1916, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Charlie Gunn and Virginia Holland Gunn.
She was married
to Archie Wilson, who predeceased her.
She was employed for many years at Roosevelt Hospital. She was a member of the Jehovahs Witness Faith.
Suvivors include two daughters, Shirley W. Brown and Verna Lomax, both of Danville; one son, Archie Wilson Jr. of Danville; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Verna Lomax, 702 North Main Street.
Bobby Adams
GRETNA, Va. - Bobby Gene Adams, 63, of 102 Motley St., died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 17, 1936, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Mabel Brumfield Adams and Willard Leslie Adams.
He was a retired construction worker and farmer.
In addition to his mother of Gretna, survivors include one daughter, Cheryl McInnis of North Carolina; one sister, Jeanette Barbour of Gretna; and one grandchild.
He was predeceased by one brother, Norman Willard Adams.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Colbert-Moran Chapel with the Rev. Bert Johnson officiating. Interment
will be in Gretna Burial Park.

Floyd Fox Jr.
CHATHAM, Va. - Floyd Martin Fox Jr., 60, of 480 Fox Lane, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at his residence.
Born May 15, 1939, in Danville, he was the son of the late Floyd Martin Fox Sr. and Mildred Feageans Fox.
He married
Rita Reynolds Fox, who survives.
In addition to his mother and wife, survivors include three daughters, Lisa Owen of Graham, N.C., Susan Hedrick and Jennifer Tanksley, both of Chatham; two sisters, Patsy Patterson of Chatham and Peggy Moore of Manassas; one brother, Bill Fox of Chatham; and five grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, Floyd Martin "Marty" Fox III.
A graveside memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Fox Family cemetery with the Rev. Walker Pettyjohn officiating. Burial will be at Fox Family cemetery.
