Ervis Hall Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Ervis Harvard Hall Jr., 71, of 145 Rockford Place, died Tuesday, Oct.
5, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center after four years of declining health.
Born Oct. 3, 1928, in Chatham, he was the son of the late Ervis Harvard Hall and Ruth Keen Hall who survives of Orlando, Fla.
He married
June 19, 1954, to Florine Hardie Hall, who also survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Army served during the Korean Conflict. He was retired purchasing and inventory manager from Major Business Systems, Hillsborough, N.C. He was member and past master of Pittsylvania Lodge No. 24 A.F. & A.M. and past district deputy grand master of the 38th Masonic District. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon and adult Sunday school teacher.
In addition to his wife of the residence and mother of Orlando, Fla., survivors include two daughters, Karen Hall of Sierra Madre, Calif., and Barbara Hall of Santa Monica, Calif.; one stepson Chaplain Col. H. Bryant Wilbourne of Colorado Springs, Co.; a sister, Charlotte Padera of Geneva, Fla.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jack Heinsohn Jr. and Chaplain Colonel H. Bryant Wilbourne officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Townes Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence.
Harold Hunt
DANVILLE, Va. - Harold Hudgins Hunt, 70, of 302 Girard St., died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 11, 1928, in Danville, he was the son of Walter Mott Hunt and Berdie Hudgins Hunt Wade.
He married
Virginia Jones Scearce Hunt, who predeceased him Feb. 16, 1998.
He worked at Wood Fiber Industries until retirement. He was a veteran of the United States Army and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, Forrest W. Scearce of Danville; two daughters, Kay S. Rakes of Greensboro, N.C., and Linda S. LaPrade of Danville; three brothers, James Hunt, Frank Hunt and Rev. W.L. Wade, all of Danville; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, Douglas R. Scearce and one brother, Thomas Hunt.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Barker Funeral Home Inc. with the Rev. Roy Newton and the Rev. Scott Holcomb-McLean officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Aubrey Jones Jr.
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - Aubrey L. Jones Jr., 47, of 122 W. Barton Ridge Road, died Sunday Oct. 3, 1999, at his residence.
Born April 26, 1952, in Burlington, N.C., he was the son of Aubrey Lee Jones Sr. and Nellie Moss Clack. He was the step-son of Dr. Leroy Clack.
He married
Genevieve Snead Jones, who survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Army for a period of seven years serving during the Vietnam War. He was employed as a truck driver for Wal-Mart Corporation, Tennessee. He was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church, Burlington. Most of his life was spent in Danville, Va., Chesterfield and the past two years in Greeneville.
In addition to his wife of the residence, and his mother and stepfather, both of Danville, survivors include two sons, Aubrey Lee Jones III of Chesterfield, Va., and Anthony Kent Jones of the residence; one sister, Teresa Jones Tickle of Burlington, N.C.; three step-brothers Larry Clack of Hickory, N.C., Jim Clack of High Point, N.C., and Danny Clack of Taylorsville, N.C.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Dr. Leroy Clack officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens with full military honors conducted by the American Legion Memorial Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Dr. Leroy and Nellie Clack, 2548 Moorefield Bridge Road, Danville.
Leonard W. Lea Jr.
MAULDIN, S.C. - Leonard Washington Lea Jr., 74, of 708 Lamboll Street, died Monday, October 4, 1999.
Born in Danville, VA, he was a son of the late Leonard W. Lea and Nellie Meade Puckett Lea.
He was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Navy aboard the Destroyer Escort Lee Fox as a Radioman Petty Officer 2nd Class.
He was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and later taught Business at Danville Technical Institute, Danville, VA.
He retired from Pitney Bowes as a Sales Manager and later worked for the Greenville News.
He was a member of the James F. Daniel, Jr. American Legion Post #3 and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth McMahon Lea of the home; daughters Clara Sanders and her husband, George, of Grantville, PA and Mary Lea, of Baltimore, MD; sons, Leonard W. Lea III and his wife, Winnie of Lower Lake, CA; and Nelson Lea of Charlotte, NC; a step-daughter, Nancy Hill, and her husband, Raymond of Mauldin, SC; a step-son, Frank Hager and his wife, Sally of Pelzer, SC; sisters Virginia Allen of Greenville, SC and Nancy Mollenberg of Deltona, FL; a brother, Roger Lea, of Danville, VA; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Nellie Lea.
A private family service will be held at a later date with burial at sea.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m. at The Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive.

Charlie Meadows
CHATHAM, Va. - Charlie Lee Meadows, 82, of 5129 Halifax Road, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 24, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Eddie Meadows and Blanche Davis Meadows.
He was married
to Gracie Moser Meadows, who predeceased him, and later to Mamie Reed Meadows, who survives.
He was a member of Church of God of Prophecy, Java, and was a retired farmer.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, C. Leon Meadows of Chatham; two daughters, Linda M. Reynolds of Chatham and Geraldine M. Wilson of Gretna; two sisters, Elna Petty of Gretna and Pauline Moser of Halifax.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of God of Prophecy, Java, with the Rev. Edward L. Pope and the Rev. Glibert Dunbar officiating. Interment
will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his son, 5049 Halifax Road, Chatham.

Effie Pickeral
DANVILLE, Va. - Effie Doss Pickeral, 80, 1845 Rainbow Circle, formerly of 197 Northwest Blvd., died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born March 3, 1919, in Greensboro, N.C., she was the daughter of Coleman A. Doss and Ida Pickeral Doss.
She was married
to Reuben T. Pickeral, who predeceased her Feb. 14, 1987.
She was a member of Bannister Springs Primitive Baptist Church for 30 or more years. She was a seamstress for Tate's Manufacturing.
Survivors include two daughters, Glenda P. Waller and Sandra P. Stephens, both of Danville; one sister, Mamie Saunders of Danville; one brother, Clarence Doss of Somerville, N.C.; and one half-sister, Bessie Milam of Roanoke; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one sister, Eva Hall; and two brothers, Odie Doss and Jesse Doss.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Elders Melvin Shelton, H.P. Somers and Troy Simpson officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Edward Roscoe
DANVILLE, Va. - Edward M. Roscoe, 84, of 1111 Main St., Stratford House, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at his residence.
Born May 27, 1915, in Barre, Vt., he was the son of Nella May Sandborn Roscoe Paine and E. M. Roscoe.
He was married
to Meleta Mathews Roscoe, who predeceased May 9, 1995.
He was retired from Southern railroad. He was World War II veteran of the United States Air Corps where he was a B26 Pilot. He later retired from the United States Air Force Reserve as lieutenant colonel.
He was a member and held office in the Kiwanis Club, and was a member of the Young Men's Club. He was a member and deacon of First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include one son, Jim Roscoe of Midlothian; one daughter, Sandy Morse of McLean; and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Jack Heinsohn officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Townes Funeral Home.
Rosa Collins Snead
DANVILLE, Va. - Mrs. Rosa Collins Snead, 206 Alpine Drive, formerly of 135 Mac Road, died Tuesday morning, October 5, 1999, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
She was born February 28,1908, in Pittsylvania Co., VA. a daughter of Walter Collins and Sarah Goad Collins.
She had lived over 50 years in the Mount Cross Road community.
She was married
to Melvin Archer Snead Sr. on December 25,1923, who died May 1984.
She was a foster mother to number of children in Danville area.
She is predeceased by two sons, Melvin Archer Snead, Jr. and Clarence Collins Snead.
Survived by one son, Billy L. Snead of Nolanville, TX., a grandson, Larry W. Snead of Danville, daughter-in-law, Annie Snead of Danville.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 7,1999, at 2:00 p.m. from Brush Arbor Baptist Church by the Rev. Stephen Lamb and the Rev. Daryl Joyce. Interment
will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

James Bennett
DANVILLE, Va. - James W. Bennett, 86, of 709 Betts St., died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at the Ashwood Adult Home.
Born Sept. 22, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Roy Bennett and Blendora Plunkett Bennett.
He was married
to Mary Elizabeth Jones Bennett, who predeceased him.
He was employed as a truck driver for Dry Fork Milling for many years prior to his retirement.
Survivors include four daughters, Olivia B. Saunders and Shirley B. Fitz, both of Danville, Joan Watson of Hampton, Bernell Johnson of Newport News; five sons, James Bennett, John Bennett and Lewis Harris, all of Danville, Charles Bennett of Dry Fork and Ira Bennett of South Carolina; and grandchildren.
A funeral will be 4 p.m. Friday at Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Edward L. Pope officiating. Burial will be in the Bennett Family cemetery, Blairs.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, Shirley Fitz, 155 Kennon Drive, Danville.

Melissa Ilene Dalton
GRETNA, Va. - Melissa Ilene Dalton, 31, of 177 Gopher Road, Gretna, died Thursday, October 7, 1999, at her residence.
Born November 5, 1967 in Danville, she was a daughter of Jimmy D. Dalton of Gretna and the late Cynthia Brown Dalton.
She was predeceased by her maternal grandfather William N. Brown.
In addition to her father, she is survived by a sister Robin Dawn Cook of Gretna; a stepmother, Sharon Dalton of Gretna; paternal grandparents Roy and Ethel Doss Dalton of Gretna; maternal grandmother Frances B. Mitchell of Danville; an uncle Robert Poindexter of Danville; nieces Cynthia Cook and Brandy Cook; a nephew John Cook.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
The family will be at the residence of her father Jimmy Dalton, 289 Cotton Patch Road, Gretna.
