Jack Fitts Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Jack Elvin Fitts Sr., 71, of 339 Brentwood Drive, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at his residence.
Born Dec. 4, 1927 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Arthur F. Fitts and Nora Jordan Fitts.
He was married
to Evelyn Wells Fitts, who survives.
He had lived all his life in Danville and was employed with Smith Douglas Fertilizer Co. for a number of years until his retirement.
He was a member of Shermont Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth Abernathy of Danville; two sons, Tommie Fitts of Zebulon, N.C., and Jack Fitts Jr. of Chatanooga, Tenn.; two sisters, Margaret Loftis of Danville and Eula Milam of Ringgold; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Lester Fitts, Hugh Fitts and James Fitts.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Shermont Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Soyars and the Rev. Jack Fitts Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Jean Hardison
DANVILLE, Va. - Jean Norton Hardison, 66, of 520 Bermuda Road, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at her residence after three months of declining health.
Born Nov. 29, 1932, in the Ringgold community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Marshall W. Norton and Nellie Gibson Norton Farson, who survives. She was the stepdaughter of the late James T. Farson.
She married
March 23, 1951, to Frank Ray Hardison, who predeceased her July 8, 1998.
She lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville.
She was employed by the Piggly-Wiggly Supermarket as a night manager for a number of years until her health problems began in June. She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her mother of Danville, survivors include two sons, Raymond L. Hardison and Marc A. Hardison, both of Danville; one daughter, Lisa H. Pyron of Keeling; one sister, Gayle N. Samuelson of Conyers, Ga.; and six grandchildren.
In addition to her father, husband and stepfather, she was predeceased by one son, John Marshall Hardison.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Carl Burger officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Doris Harris
DANVILLE, Va. - Doris Guill Harris, 82, 224 Courtland St., Holiday Village, Apt. 3, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
Born Dec. 30, 1916 in Danville, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Guill and Nancy Southard Guill.
She was married
to Kahzo Lee Harris, who predeceased her. She spent most of her life in Danville where she was a homemaker and a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Suzanne Durham, Corky Cook, Nancy Warren and Vicki Neal, all of Danville; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She also was predeceased by a son, Tom Harris.
Graveside funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Leemont cemetery with the Rev. Lee D. Ellison officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Corky Cook, at 434 Wyatt Drive in the Mount Herman community.

Gloria Kelley
BRONX, N.Y. - Gloria Kelley, 67, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at Mount Sinai Hospital in the Bronx.
Born April 25, 1932, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of the late Zack and Geneva Pointer.
She was married
to Otis Kelley, who predeceased her.
She attended the public schools of Halifax County.
Survivors include two daughters, Vivian Hayes of Bronx, and Jean Kelley of New Windsor, N.Y.; four sisters, Jeanette Harris of Alton, Va., Rosalee Barnett of Baltimore, and Mary Rhames and Redessa Taylor, both of Bronx; three brothers, Ossie Pointer of Manhattan, Zollie Pointer and Jermiah Pointer, both of B altimore; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Greater Brandon Chapel Baptist Church in Alton, Va., with the Rev. H.R. Surgeon officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
There will be a viewing from 5-8 p.m. Sunday at the Plenty Funeral Home Chapel in Semora, N.C.
Garnett Kirby Jr.
HALIFAX, Va. - Garnett Kirby Jr., 65, of Halifax, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston.
Born Dec. 25, 1933 in Halifax County, he married
Mary Kirby, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, other survivors include three sisters, Hester Mosley of Halifax, Irene Palmer of Danville and Mamie Edmonds of South Boston.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday at Union Grove CME Church in South Boston with the Rev. Ronald Dean officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 1171 Union Church Road in Halifax. There is a viewing one hour prior to service.

LONG ISLAND, Va. - Chris Waller, 81, of 3236 Buffalo Road, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, in Lynchburg General Hospital after a brief illness.
Born Jan. 1, 1918 in Halifax County, he was the son of the late Sam Howard Waller and Lilly Pannell Waller.
He was married
to Estelle Slayton Waller, who survives.
He was a retired farmer and public worker. He was a member of the Staunton Baptist Church at Long Island where he served on the board of deacons.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four daughters, Darlene Chambers of Forrestville, Md., and Patsy Word, Perlie Gene Grasty and Sandra Tucker, all of Long Island; one foster daughter, Mary Clark of Altavista; four sons, Charlie Wayne Waller of the residence, Thurman Ruth Waller of Philadelphia; and Howard Samuel Waller and Theodore Thaxton Waller, both of Long Island; two foster sons, Eddie Clark of South Boston, and Garry Barksdale of Lynchburg; two sisters, Patsy Davis and Sylvia Jennings, both of Long Island; 31 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Ellen Graves and Perlie Carr; and seven brothers, Robert Waller, Jeremiah Waller, Daniel Waller, Thomas Waller, Frank Waller, Howard Waller and Price Waller.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Staunton Baptist Church with the Dr. P.A. Medley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

JAVA, Va. - Frances Yancey Brown of 13649 Halifax Road, died Sunday, Oct 10, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital after being in the hospital for six weeks.
Born in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Willie Thornton Yancey and Lottie Thomas Yancey.
She lived most of her life in the Java community where she had been employed by Craddock-Terry Shoe Corp. prior to her retirement.
She was a member of Glen United Methodist Church.
She was married
to Richard Clarence Brown who predeceased her Oct. 8, 1976.
Survivors include two sisters, Virginia Y. Harris of South Boston and Eunice Y. Slayton of Vernon Hill; and two brothers, L. Berkley Yancey of Halifax and Melvin J. Yancey of South Boston.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Street Chapel with the Rev. Michael Teixeria officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Mildred Cobb
DANVILLE, Va. - Mildred S. Cobb, 67, of 167 Riverview Drive, Lot No. 43, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after several years of declining health.
Born March 28, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Robert T. Strader and Pearl Dishmon Strader.
She was married
Aug. 19, 1950, to Thomas M. Cobb, who survives.
She had made her home in the Danville area since 1976, after spending much of her life in Rockingham County, N.C.
A homemaker, she attended Full Gospel Fellowship Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Teresa Brummett and Cindy Mitchell, both of Danville; two sisters, Alane Stroud and Ruby Mitchell, both of Danville; one half-sister, Margaret Finch of Colonial Heights; two brothers, Ernest Strader of Reidsville, N.C. and Bobby Strader of Richmond; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Clyde Strader, Herman Strader, Lloyd Strader and Harry Strader.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. Roger Ewing officiating. Burial will be in the Danville Memorial Gardens.
