Richard Towler
DANVILLE, Va. - Richard Byrd Towler, 71, of 163 Avalon Drive, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, after five years of declining health and a 5-day stay at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 5, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Wade Towler and Annie Davis Towler.
He was married
to Harriett Thornton Towler, who survives.
He made his hone in Westover Hills community for 40 years, after spending much of his life in the Brosville community of Pittsylvania County.
He was a self-employed yard worker and of the Methodist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Betty Towler of Danville; one brother, Marvin Towler of Richmond; two sisters, Martha Wagner of Reidsville, N.C., and Sarah Ison of Galax.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Towler Family cemetery on Stoney Mill Road with the Rev. Cleo Hunley officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Edward Vanslette
HALIFAX, Va. - Edward Roland Vanslette, 75, of 1110 Chatham Road, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at his residence.
Born Oct. 31, 1923, in Halifax County, he was the son of Arthur Vanslette and Mary LaFrance Vanslette.
He was married
to Marion Conner Vanslette.
He attended the Centerville Baptist Church and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 8243 and the American Legion Post No. 8.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Gail V. Smith of Jacksonville, Ark.; three sisters, Hazel V. Ledoux, Pearl V. Cyr and Mary Buckley, all of Highgate Springs, Vt.; one brother, Phillip Vanslette of Highgate Falls, Vt.; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service with military rites will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Vernon Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Richard Saunders officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
William Yarbrough
DANVILLE, Va. - William Henry Yarbrough, 72, of 568 Sugartree Church Road, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 29, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Plais Yarbrough and the late Irene Williams Yarbrough.
He was married
to Belva Inez Williams Yarbrough, who survives.
Prior to his retirement, he worked at American Furniture Company in Martinsville.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Arnitta Y. Moyer of Cascade, and Denise Orange of Axton; three sons, William Yarbrough Jr., of Ridgeway, Israel Yarbrough of Rocky Mount, Julian Wiliams of Martinsville; four sisters, Annie Sue Clark of Cascade, Irene Martin of Axton, Louise Motley of Dry Fork, Mildred Clements of Richmond; and a host of grandchildren.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bernard Clark officiating.
Burial will be in Yarbrough Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Mae Blanks
HALIFAX COUNTY, Va. - Mae Keesee Blanks, 89, a former resident of Chastain Home, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999. She was the daughter of William Jasper and Gertie Davis Keesee.
She was married
to Joseph Stacy Blanks, who predeceased her. She was a lifelong member of Halifax Baptist Church in Rodden.
Survivors include one daughter, Jean Covington of Richmond; one sister, Helen Moore of South Boston; one brother, Roy Keesee of Halifax; one grandchild and three great-grandchildren, one step-great-grandchild.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Halifax Baptist Church with the Rev. Joey Cantrell officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery. Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Dudley Bowling
DANVILLE, Va. - Dudley Thomas Bowling, 68, of 405 Greenwich Circle, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at Duke Medical Center, where he had been for five weeks after one year of declining health.
Born Dec. 28, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of Earl C. Bowling and Maggie Steele Bowling.
He was married
Oct 31, 1964, to Clara Marshall Mitchell Bowling, who survives.
He resided in Martinsville until 1951, when he moved to Danville. He was a deputy for Danville Sheriff's Department until his retirement after 34 years of service. He was a member of Stokesland Baptist church where he served as Deacon.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Dudley R. Bowling of Chantilly, and Richard R. Bowling of Winchester; one stepson, Billy G. Mitchell of Stuart; one brother, James J. Bowling of Martinsville; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Stokesland Baptist Church with the Rev. John Warner and the Rev. Fred Cox officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the church and at other times at the residence.

Hassie Childrey
HALIFAX, Va. - Hassie Newberry Childrey, 92, of 279 Main Street, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born June 14, 1907, in Halifax County he was the son of Robert Alfred Childrey and Sallie Bet Gholson Childrey.
He was married
to Fannie Powell Childrey, who survives.
He was a member of Dan River Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of Halifax, survivors include one son, Garland Childrey of Halifax; and one grandchild.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Dan River Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Melvin Bradshaw and the Rev. Paul King officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his son, 1035 Myers Road, Halifax.
Phillip Graves
DANVILLE, Va. - Phillip Andrew Graves, 19, of 122 Huntington Place, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 2, 1980, in Danville, he was the son of Anthony Graves and Nancy Waller Graves, who survive.
He attended Danville Public Schools.
In addition to his parents of the residence, survivors include two brothers, Anthony (Lamont) Graves Jr. and Joshua Graves, both of Danville; and one sister, Nicole Graves of Atlanta, Ga.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Garden.

Della Hughes
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Della M. Hughes, 85, of Berry Hill Nursing Home, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
Born March 28, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Thomas Waller and Carrie Terry Waller.
She was a laborer of area tobacco factories and a member of Shockoe Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Clarence E. Hughes of Capital Heights, Md.; three daughters, Dora Wilson of Temple Hill, Md., Jonell Jackson of Forestville, Md., and Willie Mae Hughes of Danville; and two sisters, Alice Petty of Danville and A.J. Logan of Keeling, Va.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Shockoe Baptist Church with the Rev. G.W. Pass officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
A viewing will be 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.
Willie Johnson
DANVILLE, Va. - Willie S. Johnson, 89, of 139 New St., died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 25, 1909, in Danville, she was the daughter of William Spencer and Lillie Spencer.
She was married
to Lorenzo Johnson, who predeceased her.
Survivors include three daughters, Marian Coleman and Barbara Ann Davis, both of Danville, Ruth Henry of Riverside, Calif.; four sons, Lorenzo Johnson Jr. of Philadelphia, Wilbert Johnson of Riverside, Calif., Robert Johnson of Danville and James Edward Johnson of Richmond; and a host of grandchildren.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Bibleway Worldwide Church with the Apostle Lawrence Campbell officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her son, Robert Johnson, 142 New St.

Melvin Koger
DANVILLE, Va. - Melvin Roy Koger, 81, of 128 Clifton St., (Westover Hills) died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at Piney Forest Health Care Center where he had been for four days, after two years of declining health.
Born Sept. 18, 1918, in Spencer, he was the son of Will Koger and Martha Wells Koger. He was married
to Josie Davis Koger, who survives.
He made his home on Clifton St. for 25 years after spending many years in the Vandola Road community. He was self-employed in the sawmill and logging business. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Joyce Cox and Betty Nowlin, both of Danville; one sister, Nancy Carter of Danville; one brother, Harvey Koger of Dublin; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Hussey and the Rev. Billy Hedrick officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Bob Pruett Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Thomas (Bob) Pruett Sr., 75, of 342 Wrenn Drive, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, in Duke Medical Center after one month of declining health.
Born April 13, 1924, in the Paces community of Halifax County, he was the son of Fredrick Bolden Pruett and Mattie Blanch Smith Pruett.
He was married
July 8, 1950, to Mary Jo Huffman Pruett, who survives.
He moved to Danville as a child where he lived all his life. He was a graduate of the former Whitmell Farm Life School and attended the former V.P.I. Institute of Danville. He retired from John W. Daniels Co. where he was an architectural draftsman. He was a life-long member of The Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon, an elder and as Clerk of the Sessions. ]
He served with the local Civil Air Patrol during W.W. II.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Robert T. (Tommy) Pruett Jr. of Dry Fork, Ronald B. (Ronnie) Pruett of Ridgeway, and John Jeffrey Pruett of Spartanburg, S.C.; and nine grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at The Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Eugene Reed
DANVILLE, Va. - Eugene A. Reed, 82, of 514 Cedarbrook Drive, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 16, 1917, in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., he was the son of Charlie W. Reed and Ida Melvin Reed. He was married
to Brenda Odum, who survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II, and he received the Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device; Purple Heart for wounds received in action in Sicily, July 11, 1943; First Oak-Leak Cluster to the Purple Heart for wounds received in action in Italy, March 9, 1944; Second Oak-Leaf Cluster to the Purple Hearts for wounds received in action in France, Dec. 5, 1944; Good Conduct Medal; American Defense Service Medal; American Campaign Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Bronze Arrowhead for the invasion of Southern France, August 15, 1994; and one silver service star and two bronze service stars for the Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Anzio, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns; World War II Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal with Germany Clasp.
He made his home in Danville for the past 73 years, retiring at age 64 from Dan River, Inc. after 50 years of service. He was of the Baptist Faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Robert C. Reed of Brosville, and Larry G. Reed of Blairs; one sister, Vivian Christine Garrett of Danville; two stepdaughters, Cindy White of Dry Fork and Anita Odum of Danville; one stepson, Ronald Odum of Danville; one half-sister, Kay Nissan of Danville; one half-brother, Ray Reed of Danville; five grandchildren and six step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by four brothers, C.W. Reed, Theodore Reed, Hasten Reed, and Clem Reed.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. Roger Austin officiating, and with military honors conducted by the American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 honor guards.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his sister, Vivian Christine Garrett, 844 Hughes Street.
