John Reese Jr.
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - John Bernard Reese Jr., 37, of 2100 Willow St., died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999.
Born Sept. 23, 1962, in Halifax County, he was the son of the late John Bernard Reese Sr. and Dixie Lee Barnett, who survives. He was the stepson of Jack Barnett, who also survives.
He was married
to Tina Snow Reese, who also survives.
In addition to his mother and stepfather of Halifax and wife of South Boston, survivors include two sisters, Sonia Barnett Carver of Timberlake, N.C., and Mona Barnett Tingen of Norfolk; six brothers, Hampton Lee Crews Jr., James E. Jones and Wallace L. Jones, all of Crystal Hill, Rex H. Crews and Kim C. Crews, both of Halifax and William B. Crews of Powhatan.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Crystal Hill Southern Baptist Church with the Rev. Bernie Morris and the Rev. Don Fox officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence of his mother, 1221 Bellevue Rd., and Frank Snow, 1034 Loftis Road, South Boston.
Gladys Skipper
DANVILLE, Va. - Gladys Fitzgerald Skipper, 76, of 722 Seeland Road, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at Roman Eagle Nursing Home.
Born Sept. 4, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the daughter of Arthur Fitzgerald and Maggie Fitzgerald.
She was married
to Henry B. Skipper, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Holy Tabernacle of Jesus Christ.
Survivors include two daughters, Joise Mae Skipper and Jackie Miller, both of Danville; and six grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Holy Tabernacle of Jesus Christ, Industrial Ave., with the Elder Alvesta Edmonds officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
A viewing will be noon-8 p.m. Wednesday at L.H. Brooks and Brothers Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Kathleen "Kitty" Williams
DANVILLE, Va. - Kathleen "Kitty" Jordan Williams, 87, formerly of 216 Church St., died Monday, October 11, 1999, at Willow Springs Care Facility in Carrboro, North Carolina of several years of declining health.
Born March 26, 1912, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Lewis C. Jordan and Neal W. Jordan.
Mrs. Williams lived her life in the Danville area where she was employed at Tamson Chevrolet as bookkeeper in the parts department for a number of years prior to her retirement. Mrs. Williams was a lifelong member of Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church, where she was an active member and was a Sunday school teacher. Mrs. Williams was an avid bridge player and a member of the American Business Women Association, treasurer and president of the Resident Association at Willow Springs Care Facility, Carrboro, N.C. where she had resided since 1994.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Robert K. Williams and Susan Williams, both of Chapel Hill, N.C.; one daughter, Susan W. Kirkland of Lake City, Fla.; one grandson, Robert K. Williams III of Chapel Hill, N.C.; one granddaughter, Kathy Campbell of Wilmington, N.C.; one great-grandson, Tyler Campbell of Wilmington, N.C.
He was predeceased by one brother K.L. "Buddy" Jordan.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. at the graveside Thursday in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to The Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 123, Danville, Va., 24543.

Dudley Bowling
DANVILLE, Va. - Dudley Thomas Bowling, 68, of 405 Greenwich Circle, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at Duke Medical Center, where he had been for five weeks after one year of declining health.
Born Dec. 28, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Earl C. Bowling and Maggie Steele Bowling.
He was married
Oct 31, 1964, to Clara Marshall Mitchell Bowling, who survives.
He resided in Martinsville until 1951, when he moved to Danville.
He was a deputy for Danville Sheriff's Department until his retirement after 34 years of service. He was a member of Stokesland Baptist church where he served as Deacon.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Dudley R. Bowling of Chantilly, and Richard R. Bowling of Winchester; one stepson, Billy G. Mitchell of Stuart; one brother, James J. Bowling of Martinsville; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Stokesland Baptist Church with the Rev. John Warner and the Rev. Fred Cox officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the church and at other times at the residence.

James Henry
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - James Woodrow Henry, 55, of 42 St. John's Place, formerly of Chatham, Va., died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, in Clavary, Bronx, N.Y.
Born May 22, 1944, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of the late Leslie Henry and Mary Henry.
He was married
to Fannie Henry of Danville; two brothers, Stanford Henry of Chatham, Robert Henry of Philadelphia and two sisters, Sharlie Terry and Catherine Reese, both of Chatham.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Shockoe Baptist Church with the Rev. G.H. Pass officiating. Burial will be in Crews Family cemetery, Chatham.

Frankie Hunt Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Frank "Frankie" Howard Hunt Sr., 65, of 1023 Halifax Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born Feb. 10, 1934, in Danville, he was the son of Walter Mott Hunt and Birdie Hunt Ware.
He was married
Aug. 16, 1961, to Juanita Beverly Hunt, who survives.
He was owner-operator of Hunt's Grocery in Glenwood Community until his retirement. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War, retiring after 20 years of service. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Glenwood. He was also a member of American Legion Memorial Post No. 325.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Frank H. Hunt Jr. of Callands; one daughter, Sylvia H. Meade of Danville; two brothers, James F. Hunt and W.L. Wade, both of Danville; and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Harold Hunt and Thomas Hunt.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Davis officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post No. 1097 Honor Guard.

Melvin Koger
DANVILLE, Va. - Melvin Roy Koger, 81, of 128 Clifton St., (Westover Hills) died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at Piney Forest Health Care Center where he had been for four days, after two years of declining health.
Born Sept. 18, 1918, in Spencer, he was the son of Will Koger and Martha Wells Koger.
He was married
to Josie Davis Koger, who survives.
He made his home on Clifton St. for 25 years after spending many years in the Vandola Road community. He was self-employed in the sawmill and logging business. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Joyce Cox and Betty Nowlin, both of Danville; one sister, Nancy Carter of Danville; one brother, Harvey Koger of Dublin; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Hussey and the Rev. Billy Hedrick officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Ronnie Lumpkin
DANVILLE, Va. - Ronnie Dean Lumpkin, 19, of 13 Laurel Ave., died suddenly, Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, after one day at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 23, 1979, in Danville, he was the son of Ray Eugene Lumpkin and Judy Lewis Lumpkin, who both survive.
He lived in Wilmington, N.C., before moving back to the Danville area in 1996, where he was employed as a security guard. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents of the residence, survivors include four brothers, Donnie Ray Lumpkin and Christopher Dwayne Lumpkin, both of Danville, Dale Eugene Lumpkin of Kenton, Ohio, and Scottie Lee Lumpkin of Winnabow, N.C.; maternal grandfather, Herman W. Lewis of Danville; and paternal grandmother, Vera Cathlene Lumpkin, of Danville.
He was predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Christine Hall Lewis, and paternal grandfather, Fred Thomas Lumpkin Sr.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Wayne Hall officiating.

Bob Pruett Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Thomas (Bob) Pruett Sr., 75, of 342 Wrenn Drive, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, in Duke Medical Center after one month of declining health.
Born April 13, 1924, in the Paces community of Halifax County, he was the son of Fredrick Bolden Pruett and Mattie Blanch Smith Pruett.
He was married
July 8, 1950, to Mary Jo Huffman Pruett, who survives.
He moved to Danville as a child where he lived all his life. He was a graduate of the former Whitmell Farm Life School and attended the former V.P.I. Institute of Danville. He retired from John W. Daniels Co. where he was an architectural draftsman. He was a life-long member of The Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon, an elder and as Clerk of the Sessions.
He served with the local Civil Air Patrol during W.W. II.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Robert T. (Tommy) Pruett Jr. of Dry Fork, Ronald B. (Ronnie) Pruett of Ridgeway, and John Jeffrey Pruett of Spartanburg, S.C.; and nine grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at The Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Eugene Reed
DANVILLE, Va. - Eugene A. Reed, 82, of 514 Cedarbrook Drive, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 16, 1917, in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., he was the son of Charlie W. Reed and Ida Melvin Reed.
He was married
to Brenda Odum, who survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II, and he received the Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device; Purple Heart for wounds received in action in Sicily, July 11, 1943; First Oak-Leak Cluster to the Purple Heart for wounds received in action in Italy, March 9, 1944; Second Oak-Leaf Cluster to the Purple Heart for wounds received in action in France, Dec. 5, 1944; Good Conduct Medal; American Defense Service Medal; American Campaign Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Bronze Arrowhead for the invasion of Southern France, August 15, 1944; and one silver service star and two bronze service stars for the Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Anzio, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns; World War II Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal with Germany Clasp.
He made his home in Danville for the past 73 years, retiring at age 64 from Dan River, Inc. after 50 years of service. He was of the Baptist Faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Robert C. Reed of Brosville, and Larry G. Reed of Blairs; one sister, Vivian Christine Garrett of Danville; two stepdaughters, Cindy White of Dry Fork and Anita Odum of Danville; one stepson, Ronald Odum of Danville; one half-sister, Kay Niesen of Danville; one half-brother, Ray Reed of Danville; five grandchildren and six step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by four brothers, C.W. Reed, Theodore Reed, Hasten Reed, and Clem Reed.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. Roger Austin officiating, and with military honors conducted by the American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 honor guards.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his sister, Vivian Christine Garrett, 844 Hughes Street.
