James A. 'Jim' Smith
DANVILLE, Va. - James A. "Jim" Smith, 78, of 244 Rocklawn Avenue, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at his residence.
Born June 7, 1924, in Galax, he was the son of Garland Dan Smith and Rachael Lucindy Whittington Smith, both deceased.
Mr. Smith had lived in Danville for the past 60 years and worked in refinishing furniture and woodworking. He also was an agent for Life and Casualty Insurance Co. and later for American General Insurance Co. He was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church where he was the president of his Sunday School Class and was a Deacon for many years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in the South Pacific during World War II.
He had been in declining health for the past seven years.
On Aug. 28, 1948, he married Catherine Evans Smith, who predeceased him.
He is survived by a daughter, Patricia Smith Martin; a son-in-law, Larry D. Martin Jr., both of Covington; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at the Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Thomas J. Brown officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence, 244 Rocklawn Avenue.

George T. Townsend
GLOUCESTER CITY, N.J. - George T. Townsend, 59, died suddenly Nov. 7, 2002.
He was born in Abington, Va. and was a longtime resident of Gloucester City.
He was a parishioner of Saint Mary's R.C. Church, a member of the Gloucester City Knights of Columbus Council 674 and was a recent member of the Bishop Eustace's 4th Degree Assembly in Haddon Township.
He volunteered for the Battleship N.J. in Camden, was a member of the Teamsters Local 676 and volunteered for the Meals on Wheels Program.
He was a member of the city's Auxiliary Police, the Jaycees, the Historical Society and the Town Watch.
He was also a scout master and unit commissioner for Gloucester City Boy Scouts.
He was a mill worker for Middle Atlantic Millworks in Woodbury Heights and was also a janitor for Alice Costello School in Brooklawn.
He was married to Kathleen Arthur Townsend for 35 years.
He is survived by three children, David Townsend, Therese E. Batchelor and Kathleen M. Suckiel, all of Gloucester City; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Saint Mary's R.C. Church. Interment will be private.
A viewing will be held 7-9 p.m. Sunday and 8:30-9:30 a.m. Monday at McCann Funeral Home.

Odessa Denny Williams
DANVILLE, Va. - Odessa Denny Williams, of 66 Ashlawn Drive, died suddenly Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 10, 1920, in Rockingham County, N.C., she was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson Denny and Indiana Gauldin Denny.
She was of the Baptist faith.
She was first married to Robert Cooney, who predeceased her in 1970. She later married Dempsey G. Williams in 1975.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by two sisters, Hazel D. Forbes of Danville and Doris D. Neighbors of Ruffin, N.C.
She was predeceased by four sisters, Mary Gammon, Bessie Curry, Clady Finney and Dreusella Evans; and five brothers, Randolph Denny, Russell Denny, Clyde Denny, Herman Denny and Weldford Denny.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Danville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. Linwood Daniel officiating. Entombment will follow after the service.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home and at other times the family will be at the residence.

Harold Zane Daniel
BURLINGTON, N.C. - Harold Zane Daniel, 75, of 2941 Amherst Ave., died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002 in the Hospice and Palliative Care Home.
Born in 1927, in Caswell County, he was the son of Berkley Robinson Daniel and Etta Zimmerman Daniel.
He was a retired vice president of Finance at Glen Raven Mills, and was a Certified Public Accountant.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Burlington.
He served in the U.S. Army.
He was married to Helen Jones Daniel.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by one daughter, Cynthia D. Chandler of Burlington; two sons, Dr. Harold Z. Daniel Jr. of Orono, Maine and J. Michael Daniel of Jamestown; one brother, G. Cleve Daniel of Blanch; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Burlington, with the Rev. Dr. Ronald L. Shive and the Rev. Genie Martin officiating. Interment will follow in Alamance Memorial Park.

Goldie Mason Edwards
DANVILLE, Va. - Goldie Mason Edwards, 79, of 3088 Franklin Turnpike, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002 at Kindred Hospital, Greensboro, N.C after a two-month illness.
Born June 20, 1923, in Sydnorsville, she was the daughter of Eugene Mason and Lena Holcomb Mason.
She lived most of her life in Danville and was a member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church. She worked as a Quality Control Inspector at Dan River Mills, Inc.
She was married to Clarence Morris Edwards.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Cathy Edwards of Danville; two sons, David Edwards of Stafford and Skip Edwards of Orange; two brothers, Buddy Mason of Bland and Buren Mason of Sydnorsville; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Howard Stover Elliott
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Howard Stover Elliott, 67, of 1019 Virgie Cole Road, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002 at Duke University Medical Center.
Born Jan. 8, 1935, in Halifax County, he was the son of Henry Elliott and Annie Laura Hogan Elliott.
He was a textile worker at Burlington Industries.
He was a member of Mt. Cana United Methodist Church and a member of Hyco Road Hunting Club.
He was married to Alma S. Elliott.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by three sons, Ronnie Lee Elliott and Robin Darrell Elliott, both of South Boston and Ricky Dean Elliott, of Virgilina; two sisters, Janie E. Keeton and Marion E. Davis, both of Buffalo Junction; three brothers, John Elliott of Halifax, Thomas "Tom" Elliott of Virgilina and Henry Elliott of Cluster Springs; and six grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Anderson Elliott and one sister, Mary Vaughan.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Stewart officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Cana U.M.C. Cemetery.

Norman Oakes 'Duke' Gammon
DANVILLE, Va. - Norman Oakes "Duke" Gammon, 90, of 2552 Vandola Road, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after five years of declining health and three days in the hospital.
Born July 6, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of William Joseph Gammon and Ida Scearce Gammon.
He lived his entire life in the Vandola community. He worked in the maintenance department of Dan River Mills and retired on disability after 40 years of service. He later worked part time at Coachman Cleaners.
He was a charter member and founder of Westover Hills Pentecostal Holiness Church where he was a deacon, a Sunday School teacher and on the board of directors.
He was married to Annie Mildred Moss Gammon.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, Clifton Gammon, John Gammon, Andrew Gammon and Danny Gammon, all of Danville; four daughters, Lois G. Sherill, Joyce Holt, Mary Nell Hanks and Vickie G. Cassell, all of Danville; 21 grandchildren and 19 great-granchildren.
He was predeceased by four sons, Frank, Carl, Phillip and Samuel Gammon; and two daughters, Kaye and Faye Gammon.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Westover Hills Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Cecil Coates, the Rev. Matthew Pacifico and the Rev. Bennett Shelton officiating. Interment will follow in the Gammon Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 Monday at Westover Hills Pentecostal Holiness Church and at other times at 173 Bennett St., off Vandola Road.

James Junior Graves
BLANCH, N.C. - James Junior Graves, 66, of 429 Guthrie Road, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002 in the Alamance Caswell Hospice in Burlington, after an extended illness.
Born March 8, 1936, in Caswell County, he was the son of Willie Graves and Florine Stewart Graves.
He was a member of Macedonia A.M.E. Church in Milton, where he served on the Steward board. He was also a member of the Leasburg Masonic Lodge #648, the Caswell Sportman Club, the Caswell Pines Golf Club, the Black Golf Association and a member of the Caswell Credit Union.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean conflict.
He was employed as plant manager at New Generation Yarn in Gibsonville prior to his retirement.
He was married to Martha Hankins Graves.
In addition to his wife of the residence, and his mother, of Blanch, he is survived by three sons, Vincent Graves of Fredricksburg, Va., John Graves of Elon, and Willie Graves of Hickory; two daughters, Vivian G. Lipscomb and Loretta G. Noell, both of Blanch; seven sisters, Janette G. Wade, Barbara Graves and Joyce G. Mitchell, all of Blanch, Nannie Mae G. Garland and Martha G. Smith, both of Columbus, Ohio, Cora G. Crawley of Baltimore, Md. and Florine G. Totten of Yanceyville; and nine grandchildren.
In addition to his father, he was predeceased by one son, Ralph Graves and one brother, Willie Graves.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Macedonia A.M.E. Church, Milton, N.C., with the Rev. Howard Grave officiating and the Rev. Clyde Long presiding. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with military rites from American Legion Post #29, Danville.
Family visitation will be 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Macedonia A.M.E. Church. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Lillie White Hunt
DANVILLE, Va. - Lillie White Hunt, 77, 168 White Street, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 22, 1925, in Danville, she was the daughter of George W. White and Maddie Dodson White.
She was a custodial engineer who worked for the Danville City School System.
She was a member of Evening Light Cathedral.
She married Stephen Hunt, who predeceased her.
She is survived by one son, Robert J. Curley of Danville; one brother, Amos White of St. Louis, Miss.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held noon Tuesday from Evening Light Cathedral with Bishop Fred Kidd and Bishop S.P. Pool officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

CHATHAM, Va. - Jessie Isaac Jones, 81, of 301 Little Cherrystone Road, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at his residence.
Born April 15, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Stonewall Jones and Ella Smith Jones.
He was married to Cathelene Jones.
He was a retired yardsman at Chatham Hall, and was a member of the Smithfield Primitive Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by three sons, Hugh Jones of Richmond, Dale Jones of the residence and Jerry Jones of Axton; one daughter, Gladys Polk of Chatham; and two sisters, Anne Laurel Younger and Lonie Whitehead, both of Chatham.
He was predeceased by a son, Jessie I. Jones Jr.; two sisters, Ella Pearl Jones and Nora Stevenson; and five brothers, Orlando Jones, Woodrow Jones, Walnut Jones, Carter Jones and Russell Jones.
