Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Carl Meade

CHATHAM, Va. - Carl Bruce Meade, 88, of 140 Wells Lane, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at his residence.

Born Sept. 15, 1911, in Pound, he was the son of Sam Meade and Dora Vanover Meade.

He married Doshie Boggs Meade, who survives.

He was a member of Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Betty J. Bolling of Pound, Bannie A. Hanes of Midlothian, Charlotte Layne of Luray, and Zelma Aichel of Wise; three sons, Wallace Meade of Pound, Ross Meade of Dallas, Ga., and Nicholas Meade of Irving, Texas; one step-daughter Ethel Wells of Stuarts Draft; five step-sons, James Wells Jr. of Stafford, John R. Wells of Chatham, Hubert C. Wells of Knoxville, Tenn; Ralph N. Wells of Pound, and Jerry J. Wells of Chatham; one sister, Rena Dotson of Tampa, Fla.; one brother, Ross Meade of Clintwood; 28 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by three children and one grandchild.

A funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Scott Funeral Home with the Rev. Federal Layne officiating. Burial will be in Meade Family cemetery, Chatham.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Dr. James Rising

DANVILLE, Va. - Dr. James Weldon Rising, 82, of 1248 Meadowview Drive, died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 15, 1917, in Herkimer County, N.Y., he was the son of James Lee Rising and Evva Hartman Rising.

He married Dec. 30, 1945, Eva Mae Boyts Rising, who survive.

He was a member of Westover Baptist Church, a former deacon, Sunday school teacher and head usher.

He was a well known doctor of chiropractic in Danville for 52 years.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four sons, Barry L. Rising, Lee J. Rising and Ray B. Rising, all of Danville, and Dr. Jay W. Rising of Aiken, S.C.; and one daughter, Tonya M. Land of Salem; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one sister, Doris R. Peterson.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Westover Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Doug Barber and the Rev. Robert Vermillion officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church and at other times at the residence. Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth Campbell

BUENA VISTA, Va. - Elizabeth Huffman Campbell, 90, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at Stonewall Jackson Hospital.

Born July 9, 1909, in Rockbridge County, she was the daughter of Jessie Huffman and Lizzie Pugh Huffman.

She was married to Clyde Bays Campbell, who predeceased her.

She was a member of The Buena Vista Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include one son Joseph C. "Tex" Campbell of Buena Vista; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Betsy Moore; a brother, Jerry Huffman; and three sisters, Nellie Coleman, Dora Jones and Emma Slough.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Buena Vista Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. David Bain officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Thursday at Bolling, Grose and Lotts Funeral Home.

Nova Mitchell

DANVILLE, Va. - Nova Virginia Lee Mitchell, 91, formerly of 1495 Myrtle Ave., died Tuesday afternoon Oct. 19, 1999, at Avanti of Lynchburg.

Born May 3, 1908, in Abingdon, Va., she was the daughter of Martin Luther Lee and Annie Arndoff Lee.

She married Willie Alfred Mitchell, who predeceased her in 1950.

She worked at White Swan Laundry until retirement. She was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church, and also the Dan River Retirees club.

Survivors include one grandson, Dennis Smith, Jr. of Lynchburg, Va; one great-grandson, Brandon Ford Smith and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one daughter, Shirley Smith and a number of nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Joe Beck officiating. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home.

Ethel Nichols

CLOVER, Va. - Ethel Crews Nichols, 97, of 1046 Mt. Laurel Road, died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Sept. 12, 1902, in Halifax County, Va., she was the daughter of Burrnah David Crews and Ola Puckette Crews.

She was married to Thomas M. Nichols, Sr., who predeceased her.She was a homemaker and member of Clover Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Bernice N. Fussell of Chase City, Va.; four sisters Louise West of Nathalie, Va., Edith Canada of Clover, Catherine Parker of Bedford, Va. and Cynthia Kendricks of Nathalie, Va.; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sons, Jimmy Nichols and Thomas M. Nichols Jr.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Clover Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Walker officiating. Burial will be in Clover cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Brooks Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Bob Ready

Robert "Bob" Wayne Ready, 62, died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at his residence.

Born Jan. 4, 1937, he was the son of Clara Mae Ready and the late Robert Rowland Ready.

He was a graduate of Lane High School, Mars Hill College and attended the University of Virginia. He served in the United States Air Force Intelligence Division. He was a member of Charlottesville Church of the Brethren.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m., Thursday at Teague Funeral Home.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m., Friday at Riverview cemetery with the Rev. Robert Morris and the Rev. Jeff Riddle officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately after the service at Charlottesville Church of the Brethren, 1225 E. Rio Road.

Sallie Bullock

ATLANTA - Sallie Hairston Bullock, 64, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, of a heart attack at her residence.

Born Oct. 28, 1934, in Greensboro, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Samuel Hairston Jr. and the former Sallie Hunt Staples, who survive.

She married Dr. Richard C. Johnson and later to Gen. William C. Bullock.

She grew up in Oak Hill, Cascade, and was a graduate of Mary Washington College. She earned at master's in art education at Georgia State University. She was a flight attendant, teacher, artist and was active in civic reform in Atlanta.

In addition to her mother, survivors include two daughters, Dr. Karen Shoffner and Diana Roman of Atlanta; one brother, Waller Hairston of Easton, Md.; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at the family cemetery at Berry Hill, Cascade.

Nancy Cooper

DANVILLE, Va. - Nancy Corbin Cooper, 68, of 123 Northwest Blvd., died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at Duke University Medical Center.

Born Feb. 15, 1931, in Danville, she was the daughter of Robert W. Corbin and Edna Morris Corbin.

She married July 1, 1950, to Daniel Howard Cooper, who survives.

She was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church, where she was a member of the Mission Crusaders Board. She was a member of circle two and a former member of circles five and 10 ladies fellowship. She was a a former member of the Sunday school teacher for intermediate.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church with the Rev. Freddie Vicks officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Dr. Charles Freed Jr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Dr. Charles Conrad Freed Jr., 65, of 143 Blackwell Drive, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, at his residence.

Born May 9, 1934, in Staunton, he was the son of Charles Conrad Freed and Elizabeth Stockhouse Freed.

He married Nan Candler Freed, who survives.

He graduated from Davidson College and Medical College of Virginia. He served an internship at Baylor University Hospital, Dallas. He trained in ophthalmology at University of North Carolina Hospital, Chapel Hill and McPherson Hospital in Durham, N.C. He served in the United States Army Medical Corp in Germany for two years.

In 1965, he moved to Danville and practiced Ophthalmology until retiring in September 1995. He was a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Alpha Omega Alpha, the board of the Free Clinic of Danville and was past president of medical staff at Danville Regional Medical Center. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and Church of the Epiphany, where he served as vestryman and senior warden.

After several years as a pilot, he returned to model airplane flying and was an active member of Danville Aero Modelers Inc.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Felicia Freed Morlock of Windham, N.H. and Janet Freed Rosser of Ashland, and Mary Candler Freed of Philadelphia; two sons, Charles Conrad Freed, III of Colorado Springs, Co.; two sisters Elizabeth Freed Quisenberry of Camden, S.C. and Jane Freed Espy of Savannah, Ga.; and six grandchildren.

A funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Church of the Epiphany. Burial will be in church Columbarium.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

William Hedrick

CHATHAM, Va. - William Douglas Hedrick, 80, of 610 Oakland Drive, Chatham died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 11, 1919 in Pittsylvania County, the son of the late Lawson L. Hedrick and Temple Lovie Arthur Hedrick.

He was predeceased by his wife, Cecile Moon Hedrick.

Survivors include two daughters, Debbie H. Snyder of Suffolk and Margaret H. Rickard of Powhatan; one sister, Lena H. Scruggs of Chatham; and two grandchildren.

He was a member of Watson United Methodist Church.

Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete at this time.

Samuel Jones Jr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Samuel Austin Jones Jr., 76, of 159 Epps St., died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 23, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Samuel A. Jones Sr. and Ida Belle Hill.

He married Mary W. Jones, who survives.

She was a laborer with Dibrell's Tobacco Company and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, James Ford and Charles Ford, both of Danville, Va.; four daughters, Patricia Herron of Cleveland, Julia Ford, Andrea Ford and Patricia Ford, all of Danville; one sister, Nannie Stephens of Danville; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Cunningham and Hughes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Cecil Bridgeforth officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

A viewing will be 4-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

The family will receive friends at the residence.
