GRETNA, Va. - Paul Monroe Mease Jr., 59, of 2373 West Gretna Road, died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at Lotus Drive in Gretna.
Born Jan. 30, 1940, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Paul Monroe Mease Sr. and the late Beatrice Edwards Mease.
He married
Marie Younger Mease, who predeceased him May 6, 1999.
He was employed with Southern Railway and was an Army veteran during the Korean Confilct.
Survivors include one son, Kenny Paul Cook of Rocky Mount; one daughter, Tina Gravely of Rocky Mount; three brothers, John Mease of Salem, Douglas McArthur Mease of Camden, N.J., and Zachariah Edwards of Richmond; two sisters, Norma Mease Murray of Richmond, and Diane Bodie of Chantilly.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by one brother Elson B. Mease.
A funeral will be noon Saturday at Miller Funeral Home with the Rev. Isaac Monroe, the Rev. Raymond Ramsey and the Rev. Robert Wainwright officiating. Burial will be in the Mease Family cemetery with military rites conducted by the Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 4165 and DAV No. 46 of Altavista.
Nova Mitchell
DANVILLE, VA. - Nova Virginia Lee Mitchell, 91, formerly of 1495 Myrtle Ave., died Tuesday afternoon Oct. 19, 1999, at Avanti of Lynchburg.
Born May 3, 1908, in Abingdon, Va., she was the daughter of Martin Luther Lee and Annie Arndoff Lee.
She married
Willie Alfred Mitchell, who predeceased her in 1950.
She worked at White Swan Laundry until retirement. She was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church, and also the Dan River Retirees club.
Survivors include one grandson, Dennis Smith, Jr. of Lynchburg, Va; one great-grandson, Brandon Ford Smith and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one daughter, Shirley Smith and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Joe Beck officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home.
Sophia Bethel
GLENDALE, Ariz. - Sophia Dakota Bethel, 82, of 5422 W. Fallen Leaf Lane, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at Plaza Del Rio Care Center, Sun City, Ariz.
Born Dec. 14, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the daughter of James Daniel and Rosa Daniel.
She was a housewife. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and of Eastern Star.
Survivors include two daughters, Velveia B. Evans of Phoenix, and Elaine Walton of Danville; one foster-daughter Pamela Garland of Louisiana; three foster-sons Michael Garland and Richard Garland, both of Louisiana, and Ricky Garland of California; one sister, Mary West of Philadelphia; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. Cecil Bridgeforth officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

Sallie Bullock
ATLANTA - Sallie Hairston Bullock, 64, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, of a heart attack at her residence.
Born Oct. 28, 1934, in Greensboro, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Samuel Hairston Jr. and the former Sallie Hunt Staples, who survives.
She married
Dr. Richard C. Johnson and later to Gen. William C. Bullock.
She grew up in Oak Hill, Cascade, and was a graduate of Mary Washington College. She earned at master's in art education at Georgia State University. She was a flight attendant, teacher, artist and was active in civic reform in Atlanta.
In addition to her mother, survivors include two daughters, Dr. Karen Shoffner and Diana Roman of Atlanta; one brother, Waller Hairston of Easton, Md.; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at the family cemetery at Berry Hill, Cascade, Va.
Nancy Cooper
DANVILLE, Va. - Nancy Corbin Cooper, 68, of 123 Northwest Blvd., died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born Feb. 15, 1931, in Danville, she was the daughter of Robert W. Corbin and Edna Morris Corbin.
She married
July 1, 1950, to Daniel Howard Cooper, who survives.
She was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church, where she was a member of the Mission Crusaders Board. She was a member of circle two and a former member of circles five and 10 ladies fellowship. She was a a former member of the Sunday school teacher for intermediate.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church with the Rev. Freddie Vicks officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Dr. Charles Freed, Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Dr. Charles Conrad Freed Jr., 65, of 143 Blackwell Drive, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, at his residence.
Born May 9, 1934, in Staunton, he was the son of Charles Conrad Freed and Elizabeth Stockhouse Freed.
He married
Nan Candler Freed, who survives.
He graduated from Davidson College and Medical College of Virginia. He served an internship at Baylor University Hospital, Dallas. He trained in ophthalmology at University of North Carolina Hospital, Chapel Hill and McPherson Hospital in Durham, N.C. He served in the United States Army Medical Corp in Germany for two years.
In 1965, he moved to Danville and practiced Ophthalmology until retiring in September 1995. He was a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Alpha Omega Alpha, the board of the Free Clinic of Danville and was past president of medical staff at Danville Regional Medical Center. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and Church of the Epiphany, where he served as vestryman and senior warden.
After several years as a pilot, he returned to model airplane flying and was an active member of Danville Aero Modelers Inc.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Felicia Freed Morlock of Windham, N.H. and Janet Freed Rosser of Ashland, and Mary Candler Freed of Philadelphia; one son, Charles Conrad Freed, III of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Elizabeth Freed Quisenberry of Camden, S.C., and Jane Freed Espy of Savannah, Ga.; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Church of the Epiphany. Burial will be in the church columbarium.

Clarence Harris
CALLANDS, Va. - Clarence Harris, 85, of 1945 Mapleton Drive, died Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 20, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 25, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Freddie Harris and Lula Dickerson Harris.
He was married
to Charity Harris, who survives.
He was a member of the Schoolfield Primitive Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Deacons. He was a retired employee of Hooker Furniture Company in Martinsville.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Elder Dean Harris and Freddie Harris, both of Chatham and Jerry Harris of Danville; two daughters, Queen Walton of Newport News and Judith Turner of Chesapeake; two brothers, Charlie Harris of Martinsville and Irvin Harris of Callands; one sister, Ruby Price of Callands; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Tommy Harris, Richard Harris and William Harris; and four sisters, Rubena Harris, Lillie Bell Fuller, Estelle Fuller and Mary Sue Price.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Schoolfield Primitive Baptist Church with the Elder E.A. Edwards officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Douglas "Doug" Hedrick
CHATHAM, Va. - William Douglas "Doug" Hedrick, 80, of 610 Oakland Drive, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 11, 1919 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Lawson L. Hedrick and Tempie Arthur Hedrick.
He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Watson Memorial United Methodist Church. He was owner and operator of the Burger House restaurant in Chatham prior to his retirement.
Survivors include two daughters, Debbie H. Snyder of Suffolk and Margaret H. Richard of Powhatan; one sister, Lena H. Scruggs of Chatham; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, William H. Hedrick.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Scott Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles R. Wickham officiating. Interment
will be in Chatham Burial Park.

Irvin Rigney
DANVILLE, Va. - Irvin James Rigney, 89, of 149 Sunset Drive, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born Feb. 23, 1910, in Danville, he was the son of William R. Rigney and Sarah Jefferson Rigney.
He married
Aug. 15, 1942, to Mabel Todd Rigney, who survives.
He lived his life in Danville. He owned and operated W.R. Rigney Shoe Shop for over 40 years prior to his retirement. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Danville.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Daryl Rigney of Danville; one brother, Robert L. Rigney of Danville; and one sister, Mary R. Baker of Danville.
He was predeceased by one brother, William Thomas Rigney; and two sisters, Lily R. Smith and Catherine R. Bailey.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Joey Faucette officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial.

Georgia Smith
DANVILLE, Va. - Georgia Odessa May Smith, 86, of 12 Still St., died late Thursday, Oct 21, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 6, 1913, in Guilford County, N.C., she was the daughter of Cyrus Ruffin May and Elsie Barker May.
She was married
to Denver Smith, who predeceased her.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include five sisters, Nellie Marshall, Minnie Bond, Vella Marshall, Pearl Perrow, and Dorothy Saul, all of Danville.
She was predeceased by one sister, Lucille Cooper.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Schoolfield cemetery with the Rev. Jack Robertson officiating.

HALIFAX, Va. - Melvin Harrison McDaniel, 83, of Dan River Church Road, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at the residence of his daughter.
Born June 10, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Henry McDaniel and Mamie Gilliland McDaniel.
He was married
to Denis Dance McDaniel, who survives.
He was a member of Dan River Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence survivors include one daughter, Ann M. Lastovica of Colonial Heights; one brother, Carlton J. McDaniel of Halifax; one sister, Irma M. Cage of Halifax; and one grandson.
He was predeceased by one sister, Elsie Barksdale.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Dan River Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Brewer and the Rev. Paul King officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
